This store was a life saver last year! I was going to the Music in May festival (where I played principal clarinet) and had only one good reed left, sad and discolored and just wanting to split. After checking in on multiple "music stores" between my hometown and Pacific University (all stores with just guitars, vinyls, and sometimes some jazz supplies), I came in here. Lo and behold, he had a box of classic Vandorens (three and a half) behind the counter. He was pleasant, made a couple jokes, and then we had a conversation about the music stores nearby before I bought the reeds and hurried over to check in. He wasn't the most sweet person to work retail, but he was kind enough and got me what I needed. Much preferred to my old music store, where the owner took my money and my instrument year after year to "change the pads", which never actually occurred. They had a quick turnaround which was important because between classes, practice, and lessons we really couldn't leave it for an extended period of time. Without a doubt the worst retail experience I have had in my adult life. I have worked in music retail for over a decade now and never have I been subjected to such unwarranted condescension from a business owner. Surly from the moment we walked into his shop, the middle-aged rocker "dude" behind the counter went from simply unpleasant to actively hostile and for no other reason that we could ascertain than for having committed the sin of entering his store, looking to actually spend money with him. Did find a nice cello for sale there, however upon inspection found indications that it belonged to a local school system. When we inquired on it's price we were greeted with a "don't touch that! It's already sold." And "Oh, I don't know how much for but the guy who bought it would be very pissed if he saw you pawing it." Or possibly noticing that it was very possibly stolen goods at any rate. We did note that there was another guitar store located not but a block away, which was closed and thus made it a better retail experience all around. Small town stores have a tendency to be petty fiefdoms, lorded over by similarly petty personalities. But this guy beats all I ever seen. read more

Horrible horrible customer service. Very rude guy answered the phone wouldn't answer our question and hung up on my wife. Our son is in town for a music festival and broke a string. We are looking to buy a replacement string plus a complete set for back up. This would have been an easy $130 sale but this guy, what the heck. How do you remain in business when you treat customers like that. What a jerk Update after a few hours later this guy has been calling my # and now just spoke with me. Threatening me to ruin my business reputation. So now I change my initial evaluation of rude to crazy. This guy is obviously mentally unstable, who does that? I called to make a purchase and you were rude/crazy what more is there to say. You don't like my review than perhaps you should evaluate how your treat your potential customers. You read this, you just called and threatened me so I know you are paying attention. You draw more flies with honey dude. Ps I am a musician as well and notice that some of my musician friends that live out there have had similar experiences. So my negative review I see doesn't stand alone. If you don't want this type of review than there is an easy fix, be nicer. People are calling to spend their hard earned money with you. If thats not what you are opened for than so be it. I needed a simple answer, do you have viola strings. You wouldn't answer that question and hung up on my wife. Ed is a very skilled and knowledgeable about his craft! One day he had my broken qtr inch, I needed that night, fixed within a few hours of walking in! He didn't stop at just fixing it, he also educated me on my product and has very good insight on what products are good for my bands needs! More recently I brought in my bass guitar and a few more miscellaneous cables for repair and he came through in the clutch, again. Not happy. Took my guitar there to see if he was familiar with Takamine truss rod adjustments, as i tweaked with mine and seemed to have problems. The minute he heard another shop nearby tried to help me but wasnt 100% sure about my brand that is when the owner stopped listening to me. I was a willing to pay customer and had his mind on battling shops. He even went on to say his store has cameras and audio as he was trying to nicely but sarcastically telling me to leave. I walked in with two accordians that were victims of possible water damage and mold. Ed was very pleasant, and immediately helpful, taking the time to explain the issues on those instruments (one was a total loss, and the other was, happily, fine...just needed a couple of small repairs). "A real disappointment of a business in beautiful historic downtown Forest Grove, Oregon" I thought I'd give Flying Pig Music a chance at earning my business since I've lived in Forest Grove for a lot of years and always try to support my home town's small or sole proprietor businesses over going to the big corporate chain stores in the greater Portland metro area. In this particular case it was a huge mistake on my part. I contacted this store and spoke to a man named Ed (the owner) who sounded extremely unenthusiastic when he answered the phone and groggily murmured a few words that didn't sound like a hello or greeting. I thought I had the wrong phone number at first since the voice on the other end of the phone did not sound like that of a businessman or anyone who remotely works in a retail or customer service role where at least very elementary level social and customer service skills are required. I inquired about renting an amplifier head and explained that my amp head was in the shop for diagnostics, and meanwhile I wanted to use the rental amp from his store to check out my instrument to make sure it wasn't associated with the problem I believed was occurring with my amp head. Well Ed immediately said that he would NOT rent me out an amp head for fear that I might cause damage to his equipment. Right away I sensed a negative attitude! This was a very peculiar response to me because I made it clear that I was only going to use his equipment for a simple check/test at home. I mean come on now, its not like I was going to use this rental amp head at a full on jam session or live gig at a venue where high volume levels would be involved or other possible physical damage might occur from spectators, liquid substances, or other environmental elements. I think that my deposit on the equipment and other personal securities to be put down on the rental should more than cover the very remote chance that the amplifier head should incur any damage. Give me a break!!! What an insult to my intelligence during my very first experience with Flying Pig Music. Well, I told Ed that I can respect the fact he wants to protect his equipment, but the minor problem I was experiencing with my amp head and maybe instrument (not sure which yet) has been going on for a long period of time (years) and that my equipment has not incurred any issues or other signs of damage to date. He still did not want to rent out a simple, very inexpensive amp head for this trivial purpose. It was like he did not want to provide any business or service to me. He made me feel inferior! I agree with the other negative reviews that I've read on various review sites about Flying Pig Music and concur that the owner of this business is rude and insensitive to the needs of a customer, and it's evident that he lacks basic social and customer service skills. I suspect the owner must be well off financially and just running this business to give himself something to do because he sure doesn't care about providing any goods or services to potential customers or earning return patrons. In summary, I would never recommend Flying Pig Music to anyone even for their most desperate needs such as something like guitar picks or kazoos. That's a real shame because I have numerous friends and associates in the music and arts business that visit me here in Forest Grove and I could never refer them to this establishment for their needs while in town for either business or pleasure. Instead, I would recommend Beacock Music in Vancouver, WA for all your music needs, and Inner Sound in SE Portland for equipment repairs on the brands that they are authorized to service. I've had impeccable experiences with both of those aforementioned businesses. Good luck out there and please heed my advice here.
