This is not one of my usual Metro stops so I'm not a big fan. It is serviced by the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, ones that I don't usually use. That doesn't detract from this, just a fact. I will say that this is one of the nicest entrances to a Metro stop I have seen. Being in the midst of George Washington University lends to that. Big bust of the first president just step from the escalators allows for the steady stream of people to file by. The station itself isn't anything extraordinary. It has the same aesthetic as every other underground Metro station in DC. The trains were running on time the day I chose this station. Coming at a consistent pace and it didn't matter which line I took as I was making my way to a connection. Even though it looked like every other station, this one felt longer than most. And the way I was heading on the tracks it felt like a longer than usual walk to get the part of the platform where I wanted to be. You have to remember not all trains have eight cars. read more

Foggy Bottom-GWU station is a smaller station served by the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. It's a pretty simple station. It only has one exit so can bit a bit crowded coming in and out of the station,, especially if two trains arrived at once. The station exits next to GWU Hospital, and is a block down from Washington Circle and a Whole Foods amongst other things. The Kennedy Center shuttle also stops in front of the station. There are usually a few sidewalk vendors out in front of the station selling T-shirts, sometimes household products, artworks, and other items. There is a Starbucks located in the GWU Hospital lobby (limited to hospital employees late/overnight), and a 7-Eleven a block over through a little plaza behind the station entrance. It does the job. Can't complain. read more

I rated five stars because it sounds like a station that would exist in Harry Potter. Got a good laugh everytime we passed this station.

Definitely a lot of foot track. A lot of action. Be aware of your surroundings. There is a lot around this metro station. There is schools around, businesses, hospital ect. The exterior is pretty busy at times. It can be a little dirty due to the foot traffic. This is a convenient location though. I came in using the Silver Route. But this location services the blue, orange and silver. I do think this station is really pretty. A lot of architectural beauty. read more

Whoever does maintenance deserves a raise. Probably one of the best forms of transportation in the country. During a DC trip, we made good use of our passes. I didn't want to go back home, and drive a Hyundai ever again. read more

I think this is my favorite station in a relatively central part of DC, simply because it's small and is easy to get in and out of quick (the escalator ride alone is one of the shortest in the system). Additionally, it's the closest one to Georgetown's shopping district, closer than even Dupont. With George Washington Circle starting to have more businesses, it only adds to the usefulness of this station. The free Kennedy Center shuttle is also a nice incentive as well, for seeing shows or seeing the small Kennedy museum inside the Center. There's also the GW Textile Museum nearby that has one of the best membership offers I've seen for museum reciprocity as well. Some things to consider.... And then there's the nearby Whole Foods. Tatte Bakery. Six Vines. Bluestone Lane (the nicest one in DC, inside the equally nice but small West End library), the nice Starbucks on the side of GW Gelman library that's open to the public. read more

This is one of the more manageable and pleasant metro stations in Washington DC. In fact it's small! Only one exit (simplifying things). All escalators work (a rarity). Today was my lucky day. I got to see and ride the cherry blossom metro (see photos). Not too many of these decorated trains around. read more

I'll usually stay in Alexandria whenever I'm in town for the Marine Corps Marathon, so I'll come to this Metro station to catch a blue line train after I do my lap around the National Mall. This station is located in a pretty nice area, right in the heart of The George Washington University. Besides the blue line, it also services the orange and silver line. You can take the silver line over to Dulles Airport and beyond. read more

Smiling and laughing. Glad I no longer work at the university. Then again metro is better than it was, way back in the day. This station has new LCD screens. These can help you know how long it'll be, before your train gets in here. That alone is an improvement. The public address system still is tinny, and also hard to understand. This orange station is the first in DC. There's plenty to see and do in the area. Also it's cleaner. No rats on the tracks it seems. Also I'd like to thank the station management, along with the police department being out and about. The kiosk machines are old and well sometimes cranky. Yet getting a pass is relatively easy. The new turnstile system is an improvement too! read more

We love a good metro experience! The metro in the DMV makes it easy to maneuver around town and get to exactly where you need to go. It does not run 24/7 so be weary of early closing hours. read more

Foggy Bottom is one of the quieter stations when colleges are closed. In a few miles of it are several colleges. This is on the campus of George Washington University. It's also kind of close to Georgetown. There's quick access to the DC Circulator bus up the street from here. It serves the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines. It's the first Metro station in DC if you're coming in from Dulles, so you may be eager to get off. The closest major attraction is the Lincoln Memorial, which is still a long walk. It doesn't have a whole lot going on in this area. This is a popular stop with students. It's very crowded in the morning especially. Other times it's pretty quiet. It seems like it's the closest stop to Georgetown. It's just a quick walk up to Washington Circle to hop on the DC Circulator. This will take you the rest of the way. read more

I'm happy to have access to Georgetown via metro. Parking is expensive and a challenge to find. If you have time, there are circulator buses that also go to Georgetown. They are free, but if you don't have 90 minutes, you may not want to use them. The metro is on GW's campus. I feel safe there with so many people around. The metro staffers are nice and can direct you to nearby locations. read more

I took Metro to get to lunch with a friend today at North Italian Restaurant and exited the Foggy Bottom station. Maybe it was because it was Saturday morning but the stop was far less hectic than the one right before it, Farragut West. If you had to choose because your destination is equidistant between the two, go with this one. This is the stop for GW, Foggy Bottom, West Dupont, and Georgetown. The Circulator bus has a stop here. read more

An A-OK Metro station in downtown Washington. Both sets of escalators were working and even though it was pretty crowded, the foot traffic was moving properly. It is the first station east of the Potomac in Washington DC, or the last station west of the Potomac, depending on your point of view. The station is one that is served by the overlapping Blue and the Orange lines, between Rosslyn (in Virginia) and Farragut West. It is an island station, so the doors open on the left. There are escalators and an elevator from the street level to the ticketing concourse and more escalators and an elevator from ticketing down to the platform level. read more

Perfect location for a metro station. With GWU, the hospital, whole foods, founding farmers and so much more right around there. But per usual WMATA screws it up. Things are regularly broken there. There are not enough escalators to the platform and the platform could be larger for the volume that is often there. Yes this isn't metro center or union station but it should receive more attention. read more

Duh, I was here and didn't know it? Maybe it was after that long wait we had over at Farragut West when the Silver Line was on single track. Maybe it was when we finally got going we came to a screeching halt in the tunnel between these two stations and had to sit another 5 minutes. All I remember was the joy of riding one escalator to get out of here. Foggy Bottom is the closest Metro stop to the Kennedy Center and to take in the sites of George Washington University after our show to avoid coming back here. Didn't even realize it was close to Georgetown. Foggy Bottom normally has access to three lines: the blue, orange, and silver. All three of these lines run on the same track, however when I entered at Federal Triangle only to learn the blue line was not in service and told the Silver line was single track from Foggy Bottom westward put a damper on things. When we finally exited the train I could see that we had already switched over to the eastbound side. I am giving leeway to the fact that these three lines all take you to most of the DC attractions when you are staying downtown. All I can say is try not to use these lines on the weekend since although service is slower and your workforce is not there, that's probably when the maintenance crew work on the tracks. read more

I don't use this station too often but have on occasion. I'd give it 4 stars but even after metro addressed its lack of lighting in the station I swear it still seems dimly lit compared to some of the other underground stations. The station is right next to GW hospital, and is convenient to of course the university, the State Dept. and the Lincoln Memorial (its about a 15-20 min walk though). Also the Kennedy Center shuttle has a stop not too far from the metro station here too. read more

2 stars because I got stuck between the doors!! arrrghh The metro is the equivalent to BART, but each has their pros and cons. My biggest issue: metro only allows an average of 10-20 seconds (I counted) to board onto the train at each stop, the amount of time you have depends on how popular the stop is (the more popular, the longer you have to board). Problem is, this includes time to allow people to exit the train before you board (common courtesy) and time to shove yourself onto a fully crowded train during commute hour. Metro also has no floor indicators of where the doors will open, so you also have to account for time to run to the doors before you even enter through them. I can see why metro gets from one stop to another in a much shorter time than Bart. Bart allows more time to board. Plus Bart has cameras to make sure nobody is standing between the doors before they close it. Metro, on the other hand, will shut the doors on you no matter what. They even have a picture that says the door will close on your limbs if you're too slow. Anyway, thankfully I was not injured and after a LONG time, they finally decided to open the doors again to let the rest of my body into the train. THANKS A LOT. YEESH. This is one of the busier stations, and like all stations, the lighting is poor. On weekends, the earliest train starts later, and there is a longer gap between trains. Plus, there is often track work on weekends, so expect delays. read more

This particular stop just began to benefit from a large glass rooftop-ceiling-like-structure that now hangs over the 3 escalators. Built to shield people from the elements, it also does double-duty by protecting the escalators from weather-related wear and tear too (and thank goodness - wmata's metro escalators need ALL the help they can get). While a great location, it simply gets overpacked during rush hours (to be expected because so many offices are in the Foggy Bottom area). You know, it's your typical metro station! read more

This metro stop used to be pain when they were doing escalator work for months, but they've since finished and it's so much better. A lot of foot traffic flows through this station and it hardly gets congested any more. A couple times I've had a train roll through without the proper display on their sign for their line color, sending a few of us amiss, but I don't think that's Foggy Bottom Station's fault (looking at you WMATA). The one thing I wish they fixed is the blockage by vendors / solicitors at the above ground entrance. Sometimes they're straight up blocking the way to the stairs during rush hour and you have to walk around them to get behind them. I get it, you gotta sell your pies and umbrellas to put some food on the table, but creating a traffic bottleneck isn't going to be generating extra revenue. Or maybe it is, I don't know I'm not a pie selling expert, but its definitely slowing us commuters down! read more

Maybe it's me, Are all these Metro subway stations fashioned after a fallout shelter? Listen, I am the king of all the finest NYC transportation systems. Here's what tripped me out using your Metro system. - You better be good at math! If I want a round trip anywhere on the system, I need to buy a ticket and double the price. Yeah, try adding after a few drinks - Why can't I use my train ticket on the bus system? NYC for the win! - Your trains look like an old Disneyworld monorail car from the 70s. - I can ride the NYC subway ANYWHERE for $2 and change. Better count those coins if you want to change your destination on the Metro. I liked the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro Station. I walked out of the Founding Farmers restaurant and asked how far is the train station. I was corrected, "The Metro" is three blocks straight ahead. Nice! There is only one exit/entrance which is a pain during peak periods. It's centrally located, however, with numerous doctor's offices nearby. The hospital is also directly to the left. There's several restaurants nearby-many of them are actually quite good. It's the closest metro station to Georgetown and is really not a bad walk-maybe about a mile. Blue, silver, and orange come through this station, but beware, blue slows down after peak hours and is infrequent at best. read more

I'm not sure if this metro's speakers are actually at a reasonable volume, of if they're simply a *SIGNIFICANT* improvement from every other station I've visited recently (e.g. U street). Ok - imagine a New York City subway station and you have something close when you're in Foggy Bottom. Coupled with a case of near-diarrhea (yeah, TMI but it's part of the review) and you have a recipe for an interesting review. So...after the Breadsoda event, here I go, down the magic escalator. Of course, with my Metro card being dumb lately, it started to give me the "SWIPE CARD AGAIN" crap and then eventually "SEE STATION ATTENDANT". Of course, I go over, press the button, and politely ask, "can you please help me with my card?" Of course, I get...the finger. No, not the bird. But the finger. Pointer up, face down, other hand doing what it already was doing. Two minutes later, after my train already left, he acknowledges me and says, "Yes?" I ask him to check my card since it's giving me an error and he waves it across some magic pad, he motions me through his side gate, and away I go, right? Wrong. Apparently, someone didn't tell me that I would have eaten a bad Domino's pizza sandwich that would give me the runs later. Of course, there are no bathrooms on the train floors - I mean, that would be way too convenient, right? So I run back up, working hard not to break my Troegs glasses, and start to do the dance. Of course, I get the finger again, and so I stand, knock-kneed as I'm squeezing my ass harder than a new inmate at Sing-sing. After I ask him if there is a customer bathroom, the attendant sees me clenching, grimaces with an, "aw shit, I'm going to have to clean this up" look, and motions me to the double doors marked "employees only." In there, I find an old scuzzy bathroom that isn't even worthy of a Greyhound station. So what does a man do? He clenches harder and builds a nest worthy of a bald eagle. With my nest down, I go to work. After finishing my business (I'll spare the gory details), I fearfully walk out of the bathroom, working to touch nothing other than my own body parts or disposable cellulose, and wash my hands. At least there was soap above the sink - even if I had to pump the dispenser 20 times to get a worthy drop that would lather my two hands. Relieved, I walk back down to the platform and dutifully wait for my train to take my smelly ass home. But hey, it's metro, so of course the train was late and it had a bunch of fat inconsiderate passengers who decided to regale their girlfriends about what was on sale at the dollar store or talk about what they wanted to do to their boyfriend later (for cheating - it made for an interesting ride). read more

I usually alight at this metro station when I'm going to Georgetown, as it's only a 15- or 20-minute walk from Foggy Bottom to Georgetown. This station is pretty centrally located, served by the orange, blue, and silver lines, and right next door to the GWU hospital. There's also some nice restaurants and cafés within walking distance. I don't come here often during rush hour, so maybe my experience is more positive, but the station seems to be pretty well-maintained and the escalators are usually in-service (which is pretty important at this station, since it's quite a long way up to exit). read more

Do you know what DC train platforms have that NYC subway platforms don't have? Air conditioning! Holy crap. Everyone hates commuting, but, the fact that you're not standing on a sweltering 100+ degree platform improves the experience greatly. D.C., 1, NYC, 0. It's pretty easy to navigate, even when your blue train switches to an orange one, mid-ride (meh). So, it's a bit dimly lit underground, and my train experience here was limited, but, hey, it's the cheapest way to get around the city. Oh, and another bonus? DC train stations are clean and I didn't see any rats on the tracks!! D.C., 2, NYC, 0. (Did I visit on an "off" day or something?) I bought a one day unlimited pass for $14 and that was just fine by me. When my pass wouldn't work a very polite and nice transit worker swiped me through the turnstile with her pass. I don't frequent this station often, but I do use it occasionally when I'm in the DC getting dinner, like at Founding Farmers. This station always seems to be pretty crowded, but less touristy so people are moving with a purpose and understand that you stand to the right and walk on the left. This in an underground station, so the cell phone reception isn't always great, but it keeps you warm and dry. There is always a normal dingy-ness to the metro stations and this one is no exception. But all and all this is a decent station and doesn't seem to have too many creepers hanging out around it. read more

I've used this station every day for 4 months and it still suffers from the same problems. I guess you have to give it points for being so consistently awful. At least one escalator never works. Sometimes it is on the left, other times it is on the right. There are no stairs that you can use to circumvent the broken escalator, like at Court House. All summer there were issues with the gates, which wouldn't take the Smart Trip or paper cards, and the metro employees would attempt to shuttle hundres of people through two working stanchions, with much gnashing of teeth and missing of trains. The A/C hardly made an appearance all summer either. Luckily, I got my car back from the shop in September, so I've been taking advantage of my wheels ever since. Eventually, the environmental guilt of being the only person in my car will overwhelm me, and it will be back to Foggy Bottom... ***update as of summer 2012***: THERE ARE NOW STAIRS. Instead of talking down to me like most other station managers he went to the machine with me and helped me. I explained the glitch to him and he said he would have it looked at. One of my least favorite metro stations. Don't get me wrong I like the location. It's the closest metro to my office, has some great food options nearby, the Whole Foods market is right on its door step, along with a nearby Trader Joes. However, the metro portion is just awful. This station is always a zoo. This fact is only massively compounded when George Washington University is in session and then doubled again when tourist season starts. So one would think that there would be an effort to keep this station running at peak efficiency... but who am I kidding, it is run by WMATA after all. In the past 2 years I don't think I've ever seen all of the escalators working properly. Even when there are two or three out of four working at the same time one is invariably running in the wrong direction for the rush hour traffic (2 going up in the evening and only one going down when everyone is trying to get INTO the metro not OUT). The entrance is usually mobbed by street vendors, college students pitching something, and random other hawkers. This station is finally putting the finishing touches on a covered entrance and is replacing one of the escalators with regular stairs. So, at least you can spend the long walk up and down the stairs, fighting with the crowd, with some shade over your head read more

Our hotel was 0.2 miles from the Foggy Bottom metro station, so we used it a lot over the course of four days. Trains were almost always on time, the station was clean, and it was easy to navigate. Note that if you're trying to get on around 8:30 am on a weekday morning from this location, the train cars are going to be PACKED with workers coming into the city for the day. I don't have any strong feelings towards this stop. It's really convenient for me (because it's on the blue line) but because I rarely have business in Foggy Bottom, I rarely stop here. It's a busy stop, being the GWU stop. There are always a bunch of kids around but they generally know where they're going so it's not bad at all. They get where they need to go without blocking up the doors/escalators, like some tourists may. This stop is very clean and not foreboding at all. That's the general feeling I get when I use underground stops, but this stop (and DC metros in general) are well lit without the lighting being too bright/harsh. And because this stop is always crowded, I feel safer at this stop (especially at night) than I do at a lot of other (underground) locations. read more

I found the turnstiles a bit sassy, but service was otherwise what one might expect in an urban commuting chateaux such as this. Service was slow to arrive tableside, but ultimately whisked me away in a silver tube of efficiency. Bonus: no visible vomit. read more

There are some great reviews here, all from people who sound like they live in DC, so let me provide the tourist's perspective. I'll start by saying I'm a San Diegan, and as such, we drive everywhere. I haven't set foot on a regular bus since I was a kid, and I have never even been on the subway at any point during my three visits to NYC. That having been said, I do know that the DC Metro has a very good reputation as being clean and easy to figure out, so on my recent vacation, I finally bit. Overall, I was very pleased with every aspect of Wmata -- the trains ran frequently and on time, and after figuring out "the drill", purchasing our tickets was a breeze. To that end, I want to give a shout out to the couple of nice attendants at the Foggy Bottom station in particular, who could tell within five seconds that we were tourists new to the system and might need some help. There was also a really great guy at the Huntington, VA station who stands out as going the extra mile. I even brought home a nice souvenir of my Metro experience -- a lovely, dark purple thigh bruise I received while initially trying to figure out the delayed timing of those little effing automatic orange turnstyle dividers that slam shut on you if you are not paying attention. So when it gets to be rush hour at this metro (about 6pm) they basically STOP the elevator going down every SINGLE time and it makes a this place a huge congested area. I mean your basically standing in line just to get down to the metro. Ugh. I wish there was another entrance. read more
