This place is dope. I came here for my birthday and got the avo toast (which is very instagrammable) and the rose milk. It's absurdly trendy (with wall art outside, no less) but also tasty. Had an amazing slice of pie after brunch, which I think was from Sister Pie but I might be wrong. There's definitely not a lot of seating, so if you can come at a non-peak time that's probably your best bet. read more

Excellent (albeit overpriced) food. Bad service. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes here, but these guys didn't seem to be able to handle a moderate-sized group of people on Sunday morning when I went. I ordered in advance, with the Toast website telling me that my pickup would be ready at 10:15. Showed up at 10:20, no indication where to go for advance orders (found at later you're supposed to wait in the regular line, which makes no sense). Was then told that my order was for 10:30, not 10:15 (that's not what the website said). Finally received my food at 10:45, having stood there for nearly half an hour. Also in that time, there were maybe 10 people who ordered. A similar number of people seated. Yet everyone was being told '30 minutes' for food? That's some slow cooking. Nothing insane about the size of the crowd, and I've been to many similarly setup places that can turn over many more people much more efficiently. On the way out, a woman walked past me and complained to the staff that her 'vegan' sandwich was not made 'vegan'. The guy apologized...but how do you mess that up with a well-managed kitchen? Food was also $$$ for what you get. 2 coffees and 2 breakfast sandwiches without tip was $39. I didn't leave an extra tip because it seemed like there was something wonky with the pricing...reading on here it seems like a gratuity is actually built in, which you wouldn't know from the website prompting you for an additional tip. Glad I didn't fall for this extra money grab. Again, the food (once we received it) was top-notch. But I won't come here again unless I have to, and even then I'll order online and show up 20 minutes after the scheduled pickup time. read more

I have mixed feelings about writing this review. I always love giving 5 star reviews and when a place is good I want to make sure everyone knows it. However, I want to keep this delicious little find all to myself. It's just a tiny little place and I had a 25 minute wait today (btw... Totally worth it). They have been open for 3 weeks so the wait time is bound to increase. Why is this little place 5 star worthy? First, the food. Healthy and delicious, super fresh and creative. The menu is small but there's something for everyone. Me and my friends ordered too much because it all sounded delicious. We had the yogurt parfait, the avocado toast, the kale salad, the meat pie, and the bowl of the day. And every single dish was something I would order again. My favorites were the avocado toast and the meat pie. The kale salad was really good as well. The other reasons for 5 stars are the staff, they were all so friendly and helpful. Also I really enjoyed the laid back vibe. Everyone was super chill and me and my friends enjoyed the visit. We didn't want to leave! They feature some Zingermans items and I was tempted to get something to go but really, we ate enough. Next time, and there will be a next time. Go and visit and support this neighborhood spot, but please don't tell everyone about it! read more

I was so excited to try this restaurant after seeing some of my friends post about it via social media. It did not disappoint! I loved the location and outdoor seating, but the inside was gorgeous as well. Usually I'm a caffeine only kinda gal, but I was really intrigued by the Rose Milk. It's a must try! I have so much appreciation for restaurants that are innovative and incorporate items on their menu that may put people out of their comfort zone. I've dined here several times and I'm always impressed with the excellent service, efficiency, and overall experience. Tons of natural light, gorgeous minimalist design. The "basic brekky" is anything but basic! It's a satisfying dish that feels healthier and balanced, compared to other breakfast joints. The seeded bread and soft scramble eggs are always done perfectly. The red skin potatoes are seasoned in a way that feels unique but familiar. The greens are dressed very lightly, which I prefer. I've always opted to add the sausage, which tastes amazing. I can never quite finish the whole meal, even in my most ravenous state. I've also enjoyed the rose milk infusion, latte, and Hyperion coffee from various visits - all excellent. On weekends, expect a wait. The staff works very efficiently, but the seating is limited. I am not usually a breakfast person, so I was put off at first going here. But I have come multiple times around lunch and have been stunned by the food and variety it serves. I have tried the rose and matcha milk, and that was the only thing I was slightly disappointed in, as they lacked the flavor I was looking for, since I could only taste majority milk. BUT the regular coffee was amazing, it had great flavor and I would prefer it black surprisingly. But the real star here is the food. I had the cashew noodles, which was so flavorful yet light on the stomach. But if you want something heavier, the Congee was delicious, especially with the pork belly. You know the drill, subway tile, light sleek wood, stainless steal and black on white menus. The two of us were asked to sit at the bar despite 4 top tables(they split up) being open. Its a small place. The menu however is very interesting. A aussie meat pie with green curry chicken, infused milk (green tea version, tumeric...), unique salads and two different kinds of waffles. We went with the regular brekke of light scrabbled eggs on toast, a side salad and red potatoes with a little squash. It was tasty, hearty, the eggs a bit underflavored. You can tell the ingredients are very fresh here. Everything is 13-17 dollars, the coffee 4 for dining in. Folk is a finely manufactured spot. This place has a really nice vibe to it, and has a great patio. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, and it was very expensive so I was expecting an awesome sandwich. The pastrami was very fatty and the sandwich was greasy. My sandwich without any sides, not even a few chips, was $12.50. My daughter had some sort of egg sandwich, again very expensive and a fancy drink. We got two sandwiches, a drink, plus tax and an 18% tip that they added on was $38. There's no shortage of cute new American diner style restaurants in town. The only thing that sticks out about Folk apart is their quality of service, and the fact that it's just ok at best. We stopped into Folk after a visit to Metaphysica Wellness next door. The place was busy but there were a few open tables, but the staff still had difficulty finding the time to seat us, leaving is awkwardly standing over other people enjoying their meals for several minutes. Food was simple but tasty, a little expensive for what you're getting even in Corktown, no biggy. What really caught us off guard was the extreme inflexibility of the menu. They have a nice espresso machine and offer the standard latte or an iced Americano, but they "cannot" make an iced latte. Literally just pour it on some ice. Nope - no can do. read more

We only had visit this place once since were out of town. We needed fast coffee and fast bfast. Upon arrival the place was pack with no seats left so we ended up to going our drinks and food. We ordered a Cortado w 2 extra express shots and a hot coco w an expresso they were both yummy but only comes in one size of 8 ounces but it worked it's magic. So happy camper I was. Folk has a reputation in Detroit as one of the premiere clean brunch spots. A fusion of different organic-seeming options, there's certainly Indian and other Southeast Asian influences in the menu. The Australian meat pie $16 is the way to go if you want something hearty. And the fresh pressed watermelon mint juice $5 is a refreshing palette cleanser. Overall: 4/5 you'll spend a little more on brunch. And communal seating given the small size isn't for everybody. But the excellent staff and ingredient quality will hopefully encourage you to come back. Enjoy! read more

Truly this place is as good as it gets. Everyone was exceedingly willing to serve. The owner is right there working shoulder to shoulder with them. The "kitchen" is right in front of you. The whole place is really tiny. Go now because the buzz is going to grow exponentially. I predict lines down the street. The food and drink i had were spot on. I felt like i was in a top rated place in Williamsburg. Specifically i had a plate with root vegetables with an egg on top - sliced avocado on the side. Like with any cooking at this level the base ingredients are not the thing - it's the expertise with how to manage the spice and that was where it went to wonderful. I will also say the vegetables themselves were done just right and full of their own intrinsic flavor. So often a coffee bar gives me a cappuccino that is a latte in everything but name. Here they have a cortado then leap to latte which i applaud - no ambiguity. The espresso itself was being short pulled by the barista which made it "sweet" and wonderful. I ended the meal with their affogato made with Reilly Mexican Chocolate and again that non bitter shot really stood out. the ice cream is the best i've had outside of Portland. It was so creamy and FULL of flavor. Go and go soon. read more

This is a very hipster place to go if you want to sit outside and enjoy a nice brunch. It's basically a chunk of Ann Arbor placed in Detroit. However, there are only about 3 tables outside (you can't eat inside even pre-Covid), and people camp out on them all day, so good luck finding a spot to eat your food. We spent around $60 (including the tip) for 2 sandwiches and 2 beers. The sandwiches were delicious and the beers were amazing, but both were absurdly overpriced, and the food takes f o r e v e r to receive. We sat around the side of the building in a quaint little beer garden type area, at a tiny, flimsy, metal, round table with matching chairs, on gravel, in the shade of the building. It was very uncomfortable and even harder to fit our food and beers on the tiny, unlevel table. My wife loved the place. All that being said, we went again... This time we had the exact same experience, except they were out of the breakfast beer (the sole reason that we came back). Even my wife lost a little of her enthusiasm for the place after our second visit, so I doubt we'll be back. read more

Only bummed they don't have beer/wine so I could hav enjoyed a mimosa! What a darling spot. Super small. Maybe 20 seats total inside. It was raining so I couldn't tell you what patio action they have... Petite but well rounded menu in a tiny kitchen. They were definitely working magic back there. Had the Bougie waffle which was wonderful. Only thing I would say is they need to work on their waffle game. it was pretty spongey and the outside wasn't crispy in the least. But the overall flavors with the cherries, pistachios and cream were on point. Also did the hash. It was beautiful and fresh. Loved the squash in it. Server was attentive without being annoying. This was a bad experience. Arrived at 11:15 ordered a BLT and a breakfast sandwich. While Covid delays are to be somewhat expected, it took 30 minutes to get two simple sandwiches which were overpriced and nothing great. When the order got to the table finally, the server dumped it on the ground. That happens. What shouldn't happen is it take another 40 minutes for the sandwich to be replaced while other people get their food ahead of you. I can't see how this place stays in business. Food is average, service is absolutely terrible. Finally got food 12:25 70 minutes later. Cute place. Wanted to like it. Never again. read more

First things first, Folk is gorgeous. There is no denying the thoughtfulness and care that went into the aesthetics of folk. However, I was disappointed by the food. I got the house made waffle with jam, as well as a side of bacon and a can of smooj. My partner got a Bah Mi Sandwhich, a side of bacon and a coffee. The food looked delectable, however the portion sizes for the price point along with the taste left much to be desired. My partners Bah Mi sandwhich had so much going on with it that it was hard to decipher a favor. My waffle was good but my side of bacon was pitiful. It looked like 1 piece of bacon that had been cut in half to make it look like 2 pieces of bacon. The service was okay. However, due to the space the "server" doesn't actually service you through out your meal. We were given water then directed to order at the cashier. After we ordered, we waited 25 minutes to receive our food. A couple who got there after us and ordered after us, received their food before us. The server also never checked on us to see if our food was good. As well as, when you go keep in mind that that gratuity is INCLUDED. That was not expressed to us at the cash out, so we accidentally tipped 40%. Overall, I think folk is great if you aren't hungry and looking for a great place to enjoy some ambiance. I would go again and order a coffee and maybe do some work on my laptop, but I wouldn't go back for a date or breakfast. There are better options in Detroit for that. read more
