Found this lovely little market cafe in Corktown. I was very excited that there were vegan options. The young man who assisted me with my order was very friendly and helpful. They have a promotional vegan sandwich called 'Cade Stack' that is so delicious! It has vegan sausage and bean base egg, on toasted bread. They also have a few vegan option cakes that I plan to try and a market with lots of condiments, wines and many other things. I will definitely be going back! read more

Mediocre, disappointing food and overpriced. But the experience and lack of customer service is what made it so regrettable. Staff came off as arrogant and cold, and unhelpful. They add an automatic 20% gratuity but you need to order at the counter and we had to get up multiple times to go ask for things (butter, silverware, more water, etc) - no one checks on you - they were far too busy talking with one another behind the counter to bother with customers. read more

Amazing little foodie place in Det to grab brekky. The inside is super cozy and the vibes were on point. Even though the seating is a bit limited, this just makes you savor every moment you're here. Their menu rotates often, which I love because that means the next time, there is always something new and memorable to try. The counter/bar-top area is def the winner of seating placement. You get to see the coffee getting brewed, the staff working hard, and your delicious meals getting prepped. I remember seeing each dish that was prepared looked so exquisite and delicately prepared, so the presentation to each customer was top-notch quality. Folk offers Hyperion Coffee, local brewing co, and their entrees were quite delicious! We had the savory Aussie pie, Blue Chai Latte, and the House Waffles with buttermilk whip and berry compote. The Aussie pie had the perfect balance of buttery-ness and flaky on the outside. When you cut the pie in half, the meat, sauce and cheese would ooze out so you know the perfect temp created this masterpiece. To sweeten things up, the House Waffles were a fantastic pairing. The buttermilk whip was my fav part... could literally drink that non-stop. Overall, terrific first-time experience here. Even though you might have to wait a bit to grab a table, so worth it! In the meantime, you can always grab a cup of coffee/tea next door at Farmer's Hand, check out the local record player store, and even the clothing store next door. This place is really cute! It's not that big on the inside but does have outside seating. I would recommend groups no bigger than 4-5 ppl. The food is amazing! They don't have an alcohol menu just yet but it's in the works! They service was great as well! It's so far one of the Low key spots to dine downtown without having to wait for hours!!! read more

I really don't enjoy giving bad reviews but I also have to be honest and I did not enjoy my visit here. It's overpriced fir very bland and basic food/drinks. We paid $38 for one can of wine, green tea and a sandwich. Now if all of it was delicious and satisfying I would not care about the price however it wasn't. The sandwich wasn't bad but we could've done without the drinks. I will say the server was polite and helpful. read more

It was strange the man said the wait would be long yet we were seated right away so we were pleased. Place is super cute. The coffee was okay I should have just order a regular cup of coffee tho rather than this fancy thing I ordered. The manager came over and saved the day our waitress literally could not be bothered. She gave us all one bill and acted like it was our fault we wanted it three ways. The manager overheard and came to save the day, I would literally go back 1. because the food was interesting where'd id want to try something different and two because of this nice manager. I give it three stars, because the waitress was like a sub for a real waitress, the coffee was OK and yes, the food we had was yum, clean, fresh, it's not your likes get a super cheesy omelette with gravy drizzled on it but it's I just went for a run and back from the farmers market type place. I left and we were all full but not too full and I think my meal alone was 30 dollars plus the tip that the waitress did nothing for. Get the waffle or the farmers board it's extra to add meat. I like the atmosphere at Folk, very hipster. They have cute outdoor seating and an indoor grocery. However I'm a little peeved at the place because I got an americano and just wanted a splash of cream but they charged me for it. I've never seen that before. So I won't go back. I don't mind the higher prices here or the mandatory gratuity because it's a small business, but charging me for a splash of cream in my coffee is just ridiculous. Won't go back because it seems like they're trying to rip you off. read more

Food was great! The only thing my sandwich was missing was strawberry jelly. They should consider getting condiments for their food. Some breakfast sandwiches are hard to eat without condiments. Maybe it just a thing in the south. One thing I didn't like was the cake. It was crumbly and dry. It looked pretty, but for $7 it wasn't worth it. For two people, our total was about $58 which included an 18% gratuity. A little pricey, but it was a nice experience. I recommend this place and would return! Came this morning at 8am 5/31/18. Immediately noticed and loved the decor. So I walk in, say good morning, and ask if I can sit down on the bar stools to eat and the cook immediately tells me they're not open yet. I got embarrassed and looked at the hours on the door, because I was pretty sure I read the hours correctly. Then another employee comes out and says that they are indeed open. They went back and forth on what today was and the cook finally realized she was wrong, lol, no biggie, but thought that was pretty funny because I can barely function early in the morning either. The menu indeed looks awesome. I initially wanted the avocado toast with a fried egg on top. I asked the waitress (who was just a ray of sunshine) if it's a runny yolk, and if so, can I get it cooked just a little more well done. SHE SERIOUSLY SAID NO, lol. I gave her a quizzical look because I thought she was joking then she elaborated and said "it's only cooked one way". Lol, REALLY? You guys can't cook it for 45 seconds longer? That totally turned me off, so I ordered a different dish. So beware! If you're not in a runny yolk kind of mood, steer clear of adding an egg to your avocado toast, LOL. I can't stop laughing as I'm writing this review. I wish I was making this up. There were a couple moments where I thought maybe I was being a spoiled brat, but I've come to the conclusion that it should be OK to request eggs the way I want them, lol. The upside -- The basic brekkie was delicious. No complaints about that. The scrambled eggs were cooked PERFECTLY and seasoned very well. Kudos to the cook! In the New Detroit, where brunch has quickly become a full contact sport, one is frequently worried about wait times, jam-packed into a well-lit, noisy restaurant amid being body checked by Becky, a hungover mortgage banker from Quicken Loans, or Connor, who also works for another Dan Gilbert venture. On the day in question of our brunch, Folk was no particular exception, though we managed to be seated fairly quickly in spite of the standing-room-only crowd in the bright, white-tiled space. Rohani Foulkes and Kiki Louya make some amazing food, as I've attested to at The Farmer's Hand next door, of which Folk is the all-growed-up progeny. The Farmer's Hand, which opened in 2017 to acclaim, is a kind of bougie bodega servicing the locavore scene and featuring all manner of produce, meat, cheese, and other products from local and regional producers and growers. Menu included a substantial Aussie meat pie, which we forwent, deciding discretion to be the better part of valor, avocado toast (if I'm going to squander all of my potential homeownership equity on something, it had darn well be some good avocado toast!), breakfast sandwiches, including challah (like a brioche) and biscuit options, and more. The side of "greens with EVOO", which, the hep cats tell me, is some sort of trendy abbreviation for a classic Mediterranean mixture of oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids, was a meager handful for $3 (I kind of wanted a mini side salad), but it was good. They also have locally made ice cream, which is stupid delish. It is not cheap, but it also wasn't particularly spendy. Built-in gratuity, too! Compare and contrast their avocado toast with, say, with Gilbert Avalon's $15 avocado sandwich. What more could we want? I am just hoping that they keep the ice cream sales going late into the summer evenings, so I can have fulfilled my longtime urbanist fantasy of a late night ice cream shop. read more

Folk Detroit is a cute little gem of a brunch place. The staff were ultra accommodating when I needed to order something that would be prepared quickly so I could get out within 20 minutes. I had more than enough time to enjoy my meal. The infused milks really caught my eye. So I decided on the rose milk. When it came out it immediately brighten my day. It is made with beet root powder, chili powder, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla bean, and rose simple syrup. I subbed cashew milk instead of dairy. I wish this drink would have lasted forever and I will be coming back for many more. To eat I ordered the avocado toast which was served on a delightfully soft and decadent honey wheat toast. The beautiful golden hummus added another wonderful color to my meal and I added a fried egg because I like to be extra and it proves to be a good choice time and time again. If you are looking for your ordinary diner breakfast... this is not it. Folk is probably 10x better than that! Walking into Folk, I noticed a small bar and a few tables for communal seating. The menu was a little different, and I didn't feel too confident that I would like what ever I ordered. I was happily surprised upon receiving my food. Alex and I shared the breakfast brekky, the quiche of the day, and a coconut chicken curry meat pie. Every aspect of the meal was delicious, the crusts on the meat pie and quiche were both of our favorites. The moment I found out this place existed I HAD to check it out. The interior alone is what attracted me - I love spaces that feel open with lots of natural lighting and a clean look. The staff was very welcoming and could explain what every ingredient was that looked unfamiliar (Yes, there were quite a few heh) and the food did not disappoint. We went on a week day (they have a couple added brunch menus only available on the weekend) after the lunch crowd. My friend tried the matcha milk and the hash plate and I tried the Tahini latte and noodle bowl. We felt highly privileged this morning when told by the cross millennial counter boy here that the café entrance was around the corner and that what we had entered was the MARKET! We then discovered that the very same cross millennial was operating said entrance (which is really just a window) when we got around the corner. I tried Folk for the first time in August 2022. It's a cute spot and has some fun groceries and kitchen items to purchase. The menu looks really good, but I was underwhelmed. We got the Crunch Wrap, Cucumber Chile Crisp Sesame Salad, and Ramona Farm Bean Tostadas. Here's what we thought: Cucumber Salad - looked great but somehow lacked a lot of flavor. It was not spicy at all and I couldn't really taste the soy sauce and sesame they put on it. It was refreshing and crunchy! Crunch Wrap - this boasts a lot of flavor but was also lacking. I only tasted the egg and the wrap. I could not taste the salsa or pickle at all. I felt like it needed some hot sauce and some other components to amp it up. Bean Tostadas - I usually enjoy beans to be in the softer side, so I didn't like how "al dente" these were. The beans were well spiced, but I wish there were some other sauce in this (maybe some avocado, hot sauce, or crema) since it was basically just melted cheese on beans Overall I was quite surprised by the lack of flavor! I think there are some great ideas here, but maybe there needs to be some tweaking of the recipes. Great food! Everything is very fresh and from a great source. I normally order a simple breakfast but it always taste so yummy and fresh. They also have great coffee and other fancy drinks! I haven't tried anything outside their regular coffee but it all looks fabulous. The only thing thats frustrating about this place is how small it is. I tried to come here three times before actually be able to get in. Every time I tried, the wait was 1.5/2 hours+ Not worth that long of a wait! I finally was able to get in at like 230pm on a Sunday afternoon and only cause they had two spots available. I would recommend calling before making your way here to see what the wait is, cause chances are if its a weekend, they are full. read more

The rest of my interactions here could be misconstrued as fiction. 1) I called ahead and asked if they had mimosas, man on the phone said no, then we hung up but the call was connected on their end and I could hear him mockingly repeat what I had asked about. 2) I order my food and the server asks "how do you want your eggs?" I said over-medium, and he goes we only do them over-easy or scrambled. I went with over-easy but why can't you make an over-medium egg? That's literally fiction. 3) at the end he gave us the wrong bill but we didn't even look at it. He charged us and we signed the receipts. He comes up and says I gave you the wrong bill. Our total was like 4 dollars more and he had the audacity to ask for our cards again so he could re-ring us after refunding our past charges. Never coming back here. Gluten Free Review: my non-gf boyfriend & I went here for breakfast. I ordered the Rose Milk, Phuc Tong Stew & the House Waffle with berry berry compote & buttermilk whip. My boyfriend ordered the Big Brekky. To start, I love when a menu has their GF items marked, so that was a big plus for me. The staff was friendly & we got our food quickly. I thought everything I ordered was really good. The only thing I would change was that the Phuc Tong Stew really did not have a lot of spice to it. When I think of Thai inspired dishes, I expect them to have a little more heat. They did have hot sauce available that worked well with the dish. My boyfriend really liked his meal. Overall it was a really good meal & service. You could tell the ingredients were of high quality. Note: I am not not celiac and do not have issues with cross contamination. Delicious and healthy bowls in a cute Corktown nook. All the food was amazing! I got the Phuc tong which was a chicken coconut curry and it was so good. I'll probably go back and get the exact same thing. My friends got a kale salad and a hash plate and both loved them. They have interesting warm milk options like tumeric and rose. If you like milk you should definitely try these. They weren't too sweet. The hot chocolate was very tasty too. My only complaint is that there isn't public WiFi and I was hoping to do a little work there. But besides that everything was great! read more

I try to eat at a place several times before leaving any kind of review. Same goes for this place. Here are my experiences summed up over many visits: The food is good, beautifully presented and overall really satisfying, though pricey in the sense that a breakfast or brunch for two people will cost you $50 easy. Maybe you're ok with that, but some of it just feels silly - tea for $4? scrambled eggs, hash, farm greens, toast and jam for $15? I feel like I'm being taken for a ride. There is an 18% gratuity charge incorporated into the bill. At first, it made me feel uncomfortable. A recent Detroit Free Press piece stated that "the charge allows Folk to pay all staff a living wage starting at $13.50 an hour." I am all for a living wage, but why does this responsibility fall on consumers, and not the business to begin with? It's not something you see on many menus, but I've come around to appreciating this because it means I don't have to really think about the tip - it's already there on the bill. This place is small, which means you will always be waiting at least 20 - 30 minutes for a seat. Fine, but knowing this has stopped me from going there many times. There are two normal tables with ground level chairs and the other two tables you share with other diners in close proximity that are bar height, attached way too high to the wall, making the seating experience highly uncomfortable. Either the chairs need to be higher, or the table lower. There are no hooks to hang a bag or a coat, either. It's not somewhere I feel relaxed, but anxious. I very much want to continue supporting a female-owned business that makes good food. But we don't go out to restaurants to just eat - we could do that at home if we really wanted to. We go for ambiance, for a chance of scenery for an experience, and I have not enjoyed my overall experience here for aforementioned reasons. This of course, doesn't really matter, given the praise here in other reviews. Maybe I'm too old, too nit-picky to appreciate it, but it probably isn't the place for me. read more

My wife and I had lunch here last weekend and really enjoyed our sandwich, chips, and mimosa kit. We also really enjoyed the window service and patio seating as well as the selection at the store. The prices were a little higher than expected, but we appreciated that the restaurant provides higher pay and benefits to its staff and is transparent about that with their customers. read more

I hate that I didnt love this place. The staff was sooo kind and sooo friendly they would get a 5 star if it weren't for everything else. This is not the place to go if you are hoping to catch up with your sisters, it is not conducive to a relaxed social atmosphere. Not holding this against the establishment, we should have done our research considering there is five of us sisters (same mom and dad) so I am really disappointed in us.
