Folk parfait
David M.

Folk is a James beard nominated restaurant in Detroit known for their breakfast and brunch menu. Offering vegan options and low cost sustainability features. They also offer speciality coffees, teas, and wine selection. They have a seasonal menu and ingredients from local Michigan farmers. I especially enjoyed their parfait with Greek yogurt, pecans, granola, and honey. If you are looking for a healthy option that is sourced from locally owned farms this is a great spot to go to.

Frittata, tempeh & gluten free waffle

Came to Folk while visiting Detroit because many people had mentioned to me how great it was, and when I saw the menu has gluten free and vegan options I was sold. I did make reservations but there were open tables when we arrived at 1030, less so when we left. The restaurant is small, but it is very cozy with a great ambience. Service was super attentive and fast. We both just got drip coffee which was always kept full. I couldn't decide what to get because there were so many options for me and luckily the waiter helps me decide to get the frittata with the side of tempeh and the gluten-free waffle. I wasn't sure about the gluten-free waffle but man I am so glad I got it because it is the best gluten-free waffle I've ever had hands-down. Didn't even taste like it was gluten-free , and there was lots of cinnamon on it which I loved. It was absolutely delicious my friend got the vegan crunch wrap and really enjoyed it. The salsa Verde that came with it was delicious. Would definitely come back here to eat when I'm in town. I will be dreaming of that waffle for a while.

Why did I wait so long to visit this special place? Had heard good things and they are all true! Easy street parking. Inside and outside dining options. Friendly staff. Plant based options. Local ingredients. A shop inside the restaurant with loads of local wares, wines, and food goods. They have wine, coffee and teas but I didn't partake in beverages today. Came in for Sunday brunch and ordered the vegan crunch wrap. Yum, yum, yum. Ingredients like The Brinery tempeh and a tortilla from Mexican Village. Served with a spicy tomatillo sauce. Excellent. While it was a quick visit today, I can't wait to be back again!

Stayed in the corktown area of Detroit and found this place five minutes away from our Airbnb! So happy that when we walked there it was nice enough outside to have the option to sit outside! The interior was beautifully decorated and also seemed to have lots of merchandise on sale. The lady who we spoke to when we walked in came out to bring us menus and waters. We all grabbed some caffeine and I loved my miso caramel latte! Oatmilk is an option as well! We were told the biscuits are homemade which had me scouring the menu to get something with a biscuit! I tried the Biscuit Brekky and got bacon as a protein. Besides the homemade biscuit, it also came with an egg frittata and a salad. The bacon was really thick and I loved the flavor. I devoured this entire dish! The whole thing felt incredibly balanced with veggies, proteins, carbs, and fats. Really wish I knew what dressing was in the salad because it was refreshing! The bills came out automatically with a service charge for the tip which we were told about. You could pay the normal way with cash/card but they did have the QR code option as well which we all did. This was a really great stop for brunch and I'd be happy to eat here again! Truly hit the spot and get me satisfied the whole way back to the west side of the state. Worth a try if you're in need for brunch in this area!

Went to Folk for the first time last Sunday and I was blown away by the flavors and perfection of their food. Perfect balance of textures, citrus, salt, and protein. The service was great as well. My only complain is that the gluten free sandwich bread is WAY too small compared to the regular bread. I think you should get three slices for the whitefish open face sandwich. Otherwise, you really are not paying for the same thing. The pic of the gf sandwich is the one without onions. Can't wait to go back! The white fish sandwich was to die for!

The perfectly crafted Nosh Plate always hits! Ambiance is cozy and sunny. Good vibes, great staff, stellar food

Breakfast! I don't remember the menu description but it was delicious!

Great in every way! If you're a real foodie - just go! Delicious food, great vibe, lively yet not too noisy.

Yummy! My hubby and I came maybe a few years ago and enjoyed our meal then so we came back today since we were in the neighborhood. Based on the reviews, I decided to get the Vegan Crunch Wrap (So good!) & my hubby got the (regular) Crunch Wrap which he absolutely loved! The salsa verde is soo delicious (pretty good spice level, like a medium!). Yes, it does have a nice crunch (from the crispy tostada inside;) We were able to sit inside (maybe 7-8 small tables in their small indoor space). Service was excellent and I love all the products they sell! We will return soon! Thank you!

Returning to Folk on a weekend day morning and they are remain just as good. It was much quieter, and easier to grab a table in the very small restaurant. The space is cosy and bright, shelves with wine and books, big windows letting in light. The service is friendly and quick. They do offer wine and breakfast booze. I had a great coffee, my friend enjoyed her mimosa. We each had one of the basic breakfasts, each comes with a side of fresh greens. The thick cut bacon is fantastic as is the biscuit. If I had a complaint, the jam was very thin, the taste was great, but you could not spread it, we ended up dipping. The prices have gone up since my last visit, which they noted. Remains one of the best breakfast in Detroit.

I have been to Folk a couple times and this was my first time dining in. I usually just get a latte - and I will say I super appreciate their baristas and all the fun syrup flavors on their menu. The miso caramel is to die for -- it is the ideal balance of sweet, salty, and umami that perfectly balances out the espresso bitterness. I love the vibes inside, it is truly a community hub and has so many locally sourced goods, there is so much to choose from. The space is small so finding a table can be difficult. I got a breakfast wrap and as you can see it was very full and loaded, but I wish there was some more sauce as it was dry. I just didn't find it to be something super special especially for the price. All in all, I would be curious to try something else from their menu as I feel like there are so many redeeming qualities for folk.

Beautiful inner seating

Food and space are great. I find the prices reasonable for the quality of the meal and beverages. Service was prompt, unobtrusive and professional. I was however disappointed that when we were presented the bill with a convenient QR pay code, no mention was made that a 20% tip was included. The server ended up with a nearer 50 % tip....

Vegan Crunchwrap

This place has a very cute vibe. The Vegan Crunchwrap was really good and there are lots of fun vegan treats you can purchase (chocolate, stroopwafle, little things like that)!

Folk is a quaint breakfast spot with friendly staff, a nice outdoor seating area, and a stylish interior. The menu is small and everything tasted very fresh. The espresso quality was solid and the latte was very flavorful. The crunchwrap and farm sammy were also very good and had great textures. The portions for the price, however are far too small.

Food was over priced for nothing. Didn't care for the taste. The place was very small yet the service wasn't bad.

Nate and I stopped in on our most recent visit to Detroit and had a lovely experience. The space is tucked away but had a surprising amount of outdoor space--we were there in January but I'd love to come back in the summer. We were greeted right away and given a spot near the bar. The menu includes cocktails, lots of wine, and several tasty food options. It was quite busy inside, so it took a bit of time for our server to come over to us, but we weren't in a rush. They had ten cocktails on their list and I tried the bullet proof soul and Nate got the negroni alla perra. The ingredients list for some of the cocktails include things I've never heard of, but at a place like this, I just know it's going to be good. Our drinks were perfectly balanced and very tasty. We also ordered the mortadella sandwich to split--this was delicious. It was pretty messy, but worth it. It was perfectly toasted and full of mortadella. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I would love to try more of the food options. Can't wait to visit again!

There was a 2 top table at the back that we were seated at - we could have sat at the bar also - and it was a great spot. We ordered the tasting menu and WOW, every course was amazing. I'll post pics because the presentation was gorgeous for each item. They have a small cocktail and wine and beer selection, but that was fine. My son got their Shrub Mocktail and I got the Shrub with Sake. Both were delicious and so interesting. I can't pick a favorite item because they were all so good, but the Torched Mackerel and Poached Bosc Pear were tied for #1, followed by the Salmon, Oysters and the crazy good Blood Orange dessert. The shrimp toast was just ok for me, not bad, just not as good as everything else. Additionally the service was outstanding. For a tiny place they did everything right. They explained each course, brought out fresh utensils for every course - YEA! - and made sure we had good pacing. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and enhanced our meal. I really want to come back and try the oysters and some of the tinned items. I'm so excited I found Mink and will be back for sure.

As others have mentioned, seating is somewhat limited, but that only adds to the excellent service and intimate experience. I wish I remembered the names of our server and the manager because they were incredibly kind, accommodating, and helpful throughout the evening. One example of the thoughtful service: I was torn between two white wines, and since my partner ordered one of them, our server offered to bring a small sample of the other so I could compare and choose what I liked best. We also mentioned that we had never tried caviar before but didn't want to commit to a larger portion. They suggested a "bump" for $5 each, walked us through how to enjoy it properly (on the hand, letting it warm slightly), and made the experience feel fun and approachable. We were seated at the bar, which gave us the opportunity to chat more with the server and manager and watch the team prepare dishes for other tables. It genuinely felt like sitting at the chef's table. We both opted for the tasting menu, which changes from time to time, and we were very happy with the selection. We also added the lobster roll, and our server thoughtfully timed it so we could enjoy it alongside the warmer course. The meal began with two different oysters, one topped with caviar, giving us another chance to enjoy it. Next was the shrimp cocktail, which included wasabi--but not in an overpowering way. The flavor was present yet balanced, allowing everything else to shine. The escargot course was especially creative and delicious, paired with basil oil, pepper jelly, and hints of balsamic. While it might sound unusual, the flavors blended beautifully. I expected the pepper jelly to dominate, but it was surprisingly subtle. Next was the potato pavé served with a scallop. The textures were remarkably similar, and the scallop was cooked perfectly. The lobster roll was very good, though I personally found the bread a bit denser than I prefer--I usually like a more buttery, Texas-toast style--but my partner loved it. The turbot followed, accompanied by a chestnut beurre blanc that was incredibly silky and flavorful. It paired wonderfully with the king trumpet mushrooms, black truffle and the fish. The final tasting course was the petit fours: three small cakes--matcha, red velvet, and ginger molasses. They were slightly dense, but still a nice way to end the meal. We also added the house-made basil ice cream (because the basil oil earlier was so good), and that was an excellent decision. Although my birthday had been a few months earlier, once the staff heard we were using a birthday gift card, they surprised me with vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, and a candle--such a thoughtful and unexpected touch. They also treated us to a small glass of dessert wine. By the end of the night, we knew we had found our new favorite place to celebrate. The overall experience is absolutely worth the price point, and I only wish more places were like Mink. We can't wait to return.

Their food menu is mostly lighter dishes, and while I didn't eat anything, I did watch them bring out the mussels to the couple next to me and they looked really amazing. While I was there I got a chance to meet and talk to the owners and they were really nice and attentive. They have a nice drink menu with a wide choice of wine (obviously) but also some interesting liquor and beer options. Their cocktail program is actually quite unique. If you want to buy bottles though, I think this is where they excel, because they have some really nice bottles available for sale, which of course you can drink on the spot, but they do charge a $20 corkage fee, which is why I knocked them down a star. I can understand if you're bringing your own bottle, but if you're buying the bottle there, I think it's kind of crazy to have that high of a fee. Just my opinion though. Other than that, the experience is great and definitely a great spot to go before or after dinner at Barda or Puma.
