They do a lot of different styles of hair here, but I always get a traditional barber cut from Pony who is really an artist who is dedicated to his craft - both as a stylist and as a literal performance artist. I started going to queer-owned hair salons because I was tired of being judged for the haircut I wanted, but unfortunately I had the same experience here. To be fair, the first stylist I saw here was great, but then I couldn't get an appointment with that stylist again due to issues with Folklore's scheduling system. So I started going to a different stylist here who did an okay job cutting my hair, but my most recent appointment was the last straw. The stylist told me I was their last appointment of the day, spent only 10 minutes cutting my hair, and then insulted me and the haircut I wanted when I asked them to give me what I requested. It felt like they let their mask slip because they just wanted to go home. It's pretty nasty to think that the stylist I saw for about a year was probably judging me the whole time and couldn't even bother to hide it for 30-45 minutes while they cut my hair. Never coming back here due to the unprofessional behavior, scheduling issues, and lack of a welcoming environment. read more

I tried a few other queer salons, but none are more accommodating and welcoming than Folklore. From the moment you open the door dawned with a rainbow flag there is nothing but queer acceptance radiating from the whole place. I'm sure all of the stylists are wonderful, but I highly recommend Leigh. Especially if you want a gender affirming masc haircut - they understand the assignment. This is my third time coming to Folklore, and I've never been disappointed. Most recently, Brie eased my nerves going into a short haircut - shorter than I've ever gone before - and was very reassuring throughout the entire process. The space is very cool, and you can support other queer work by buying stickers on the way out or grabbing one of their chilled drinks. I will say, I'm used to less expensive, quality haircuts back home (Florida) - but those shops aren't queer and do not compare to the stylists and barbers at Folklore. The $50-70 for regular haircuts is more than reasonable for the experience you get (and also reasonable for haircuts in LA in general lol). Support the queer homies! read more

I've been going to Folklore for the last 6 years. I drive from Duarte to go there and before Covid, I went every two weeks to see Pony. I went to many different places before here and never felt cared for. Everyone at Folklore is like family. Since Covid, I've only been back 2 times and am spacing my haircuts out more but they are taking extra precautions to make sure everyone is safe. I wanted to like this place, I really did. Queer-owned business, super close to me, cheaper than my past stylist... but the end result has left me in tears. The receptionist was very nice, and I love that they support other queer-owned businesses and products. My hairdresser was nice too, and I thought my haircut would be an easy one since I had front, side, back views of my cut. Like, my actual hair, that a previous stylist had taken of me. All she had to do was cut it like that. Instead she cut it incredibly short, making a lot of assumptions about me and what I wanted without actually asking. Called my grown-out hair a mullet--which I never saw it as--and my new hairstyle a pixie cut, which I told her it was not but she wouldn't stop using that word. In my head I associate that word with the lesbian community and as someone absolutely not a lesbian I didn't want to be seen as such. I literally sat there telling her a story about how a previous hair stylist cut my hair so short to look like my brother's--which was a horrible experience for me--and she did the same thing!! She assumed that because it has been six months since I had come in that I didn't care much about my hair, which is so far from the truth. My hair is an incredibly important part of my identity, so for her to shrug off the -exact pictures I provided- and use terms to describe my hair that made me uncomfortable it was incredibly disheartening. Now my hair is super short in a way I absolutely hate... she explained after it was done that she took the liberty of cutting it shorter because I don't like coming in to get my hair cut, which is again an assumption on her part, and she didn't even ASK before she did it! Not to mention the haircut is uneven... I got it cut for a special trip and now I don't know what I'm going to do. Please don't make assumptions about your clients and what they want or who they are. I made it as easy as possible for my stylist by providing literal 360 pictures of my own hair and it still went so wrong... incredibly disappointing. read more

She listened to my concerns and helped me decide on a style that met my goals while also working with and complimenting my natural hair pattern. I'm glad I trusted her instincts because the result is striking and versatile, and feels genuinely affirming. I really love my cut. The same goes for the color. I've been with a very affordable Koreatown salon for almost 4 years now and I was very scared to veer away from my routine place. But I've been eying Folklore for a while as a queer person myself, AND I have been looking to drastically change my hair style recently and wanted a place that would be encouraging and communicative about how to achieve what I want. So I decided to finally give this place a shot. I booked a consultation with Jenna and we had a great conversation about potentially dying my hair as well as what I would want my new style to be. I felt taken care of and well-informed after the consultation without feeling like I was being pushed to make a purchase. I promise I am not exaggerating when I say that when I walked in, I felt like I was right at home. I was greeted and was able to start a little early to my pleasant surprise! I am in love with the energy of the space and that it's in a quiet area right outside of DTLA/ Little Tokyo. The parking was very easy as well. (I don't know why I thought it would be.) Jenna was exactly how they were during the consultation. Knowledgeable and kind. They talked me through the entire process as we went along, which I honestly forgot what it was like, since most of the places I go to there is a language barrier and that never got in the way. But the hour flew by because we had a lot of great conversations. Jenna even recommended me some hair wax that I plan on looking into (and no, it was not being sold in the store). This place very clearly values building community, but has the talented staff to back up their business as well. I have every intention to come back to finish my hair style in a month or 2. Yes, this place is more pricey that my previous place, but I understand that I'm paying for skill, communication, and community, and it's very much worth it in my eyes. read more

I'm very much not a "hair" person, it is like the last thing on my mind and therefore I put basically zero effort into it. However I still wanna be a presentable human. Getting a haircut has always been a chore to me and for that reason I used to wait about a year to get each hair cut. Well my hair stylist made a switch to dog grooming and I was in dire straits. Someone recommended Pony to me and I went for it. Pony literally works miracles on my hair and I'm now in the habit of going every 6 months and each time it gets even better. I'm always slightly embarrassed when I walk in to Folklore because 1. I don't feel cool enough and 2. I have medium length hair and most people seem to get short cuts when I'm there. I'm asking myself why am I here, and is Pony like ugh her again? haha. But my insecurity is quickly melted away when he starts working on me and I walk out of there a better person. He is a gem. And my hair is set up to grow out so nicely over the next coming months, so I barely even "need" a cut in 6 months however since I make the next appointment at the end of each cut, I just go with it and it's a much better way for me to have better self care. they were very nice and amicable to chat with but the hair cut just sucked. i asked for something new and excited and feminine and specifically asked for something fuller on top, maybe with bangs and just trimmed because I'm trying to grow it out. i was suggested an asymetrical bib which sounded fun. then they just chopped off a bunch of my length and have me a much shorter version of the haircut that i had walked in with that i hated. as a trans woman, walking out of a queer salon with a masculine looking haircut and being set back 6 month to a year on progress on growing my hair out sucks and i now have to wear a wig for the forseeable future on shame of how short and shitty my 'asymetetrical bob' (short boy hair) is. i had this place talked up so hard and my stylist was a really nice person i just wish i had walked out with a haircut that was queer, feminine and affirming and not just a big chop of my precious hair length. i wish they would have signed me a female hair stylist men just didn't really get trans trans woman hair, i guess. deeply depressed today and it's so short i can't even fix it. 6 months of wigs makes me want to not get out of bed anymore. i can't believe i paid 140 dollars for a best cut. read more

Holy sh!t. I had to leave my previous salon after a horrible bleach burn that left my scalp flaking off. I was recommended Folklore by a friend and was desperate to feel better about my hair that I booked with the first person available as I felt like anything was going to be better than what I currently had. The person available was Di, and wow. Di is absolutely incredible. I told them I wanted a blunt cut and they nailed it. I came back for a root touch up and Di blew me away. I literally got chills when I saw what a good job they did, I am not even exaggerating. I have been told my so many stylists that my hair is difficult to lift because I'm half Asian, and I've almost always left the salon with a yellow band. Di managed to lift my hair with no yellow band, without destroying it or burning me in the process. I am so, so, so pleased with their cutting abilities, but goodness am I blown away by their bleaching. If you are trying to go platinum or even just a bright blonde and you have naturally dark hair, SEE DI. I promise, you are in fantastically capable hands. In addition to Di being the GOAT, the salon itself is wonderful. It's modest in appearance but the vibes are absolutely incredible. It doesn't just feel like a safe space, it is. As a queer woman with very short hair, I haven't had the best haircut experiences in the past- I've either been judged and not given exactly what I wanted or had nice hairstylists who did what I wanted but always with prompting that I could be "more feminine". None of that happened at Folklore Salon. Pony took the time to talk to me about what I wanted, asked me my pronouns and talked to me about the cut with non-gendered language (no more "feminine edges"!). I got a clipper cut but they also took their time, did my edges with a straight razor, and offered up a warm towel for my neck afterwards. And also suggested queer events around LA for me to go to!
