I stopped in for 10- minute consultation with Marisa and went the following week for the magic! I have had long hair for too long and she did an amazing job listening to my skill set, desired look coupled with the time I was willing to put in to get an edgy look I was craving. I've been going to her for over 7 years and I don't trust anyone else with my hair. I love Lucas salon - it's got a relaxed, homey vibe and the haircuts are the best in the neighborhood. I've tried a bunch of hair salons around Echo Park and this one's my favorite. In particular, Brian is an awesome stylist. He has a great eye for different hair types and styles and really pays attention to how your hair will look when it's grows out. He first cut my hair when I decided to go from long hair to short. I loved it so much, I recommended a friend who also had Brian cut, color, and style her hair. In the years since, I've grown my hair out longer, but Brian's still given me great haircuts that are stylish and functional. As a bonus, you can get a cookie next door at Cookbook and browse gifts and cards at Shout and About. It makes for a relaxing afternoon. read more

Well, I USED to adore Lucas, when I went there for waxing and facials. And I used to think Jennifer Cunningham was a decent stylist. Apparently she has fans here, although it's pretty interesting that, a while after I wrote my original review, FOUR people joined Yelp around the same time (THREE ON THE SAME DAY) and immediately upon joining wrote five-star reviews of Jennifer that were, and are, their ONLY Yelp reviews. A bit suspicious in my book- think someone called her friends? Anyway, if there are still people who go to Jennifer, I hope they never go through what I did. If Jennifer messes up your hair she will be a total bitch, will NOT fix it, and you will NOT get your money back. I went in for the honey-colored highlights I had been getting on a regular basis for a few months. I thought the color looked a little "warm" but Jennifer assured me it was the lighting & that it looked fine. I walked outside and realized that my hair was a dark, garish, Kool-aid red. All over. Jennifer's, and Lucas's, behavior was a textbook example of what NOT to do with an unhappy hair client. First of all, she AND the salon did not return my calls for several days, even though I called ten minutes after leaving the salon and seeing myself in daylight. I was then extremely grudgingly given an appointment "at the stylist's convenience". When I got there she treated me like hell: made me wait, used a color remover that didn't work, and was insanely rude to me. This "color removal" took THREE hours because she "fit me in" amongst other clients. It was not even worth her while to give me a proper appointment. She then told me the color remover was "on the house" as though it were a FAVOR. My hair was now just slightly lighter, in fact, it was now pink. And I was still $200 poorer. Jennifer's comment? "I think it's fine." What an attitude. Since Jennifer did not return any further calls and made it clear she would do nothing else, I had a friend of a friend fix my hair. It took two visits over three weeks, several hours, and another $300. This is seriously the worst salon experience I have ever had, and the most expensive. I'm still stunned at the way Jennifer acted and her total disregard for the fact that I walked out with my hair a total mess- everyone I saw for the next two weeks said "what the hell did you do?", and my boyfriend called me "Pinky" for a month. I have NEVER had a salon ruin my hair and refuse to fix it or refund my money. Note: AFTER I wrote my original review, the owner of Lucas, Taylor, finally called me and said she'd refund my money. I thought good thoughts again. Then I got a very nasty, actually fairly psycho, voicemail from Jennifer saying that she "didn't see why she should" refund me and that she would NOT do so. I think that Taylor should at least have taken responsibility for her bad-news stylist (and the fact that the salon did not return ANY calls) and given me a refund anyway- she put Jennifer in her salon, after all. It is very disappointing, because I like to support local Echo Park businesses, but Lucas is worse than any Beverly Hills salon, and Jennifer- well, I'm sorry- she was my hair's worst nightmare. read more

1.) My haircut was perfect. The hairstylist gave me absolutely everything I asked for, and even made the cut a little sassier and hipper than I could have expressed. Everything a haircut should be - just what you wanted, with a little bit of extra finesse that you personally couldn't have thought to ask for. 2.) The staff was not the friendliest. They weren't rude, exactly, just all business. Having more of an east coast sensibility, this almost never bothers me, but salons are for girlieness. I'm gonna spend at least 2.5 hours here under a hair dryer, reading magazines, and I'm shelling out big time salon money. I will come in and be smiley, PRETEND YOU LIKE ME, DAMMIT. 3.) The hairstylist chided me for having damaged my hair. Mama, I am a 30 year old modern woman with lifelong punk-rock sensibilities. We're all lucky I have ANY hair left after all of the crazy schemes and adolescent rage I've taken out on my locks. Virgin hair it ain't. You think I rolled in here off the turnip truck or something? 4.) I got a little lost trying to find the place. This is 100% my fault, because I am a little navigationally challenged and I forgot my map. As a result I was about 10 minutes late. When I walked in there was nobody at the reception desk, and I sat waiting for another 15 minutes for someone to receive me. My hairstylist had not arrived and didn't show up for another 10. If I had been early, I would have probably gone completely loony crazy and kicked a chair over or something. read more

I wish I could remember the name of the lovely dark-haired woman who is the aesthetician (waxing, facials, etc.) here.** She is so skilled and so nice. I think I got a hair cut here once and don't really recall it, but i definitely remember my facial and my Brazilian wax (my first). The Brazilian wax was something I did right after my ex-husband abruptly left me. I was still in shock a bit. I told her the situation & that I was doing it because I was eventually getting back into the dating scene and wanted something that would help motivate me... She handled this rather personal piece of info very well and was sympathetic. I knew I already liked and trusted her because of the facial I'd received from her a year earlier but it was when I later got a second Brazilian wax (at Pho Siam, actually) that I realized how skilled she was. She was quick and knew how to do the work that needed to be done without having me get into awkward positions. The B. wax at Pho Siam was adequate, but the young woman was a bit nervous and i had to really contort in some embarrassing ways. So I really can't speak for the salon part of Lucas, but the aesthetician is a pippin. :) **According to Lucas' website, her name is Arlene Silver. read more

I've gone to Lisa twice now at Lucas salon. I was very pleased with my haircut, VERY pleased. I wasn't sure what i wanted going in there, which i am sure is a stylists nightmare! However, Lisa was very patient and eager to work with my indecisiveness. I really like the laid back environment here, no pretension and good music playing too, Vampire Weekend!! I have really fine thin hair, so there's no disguising a bad cut and it takes a LONG TIME to grow out any mistakes. She's always really cautious with my hair and always gives me the most perfect cut/color. Plus she always curls my hair perfectly with an iron each time I get it done...Is that normal?!? I've been cutting my hair for over ten years. There have been a few moments where I had someone else style it for me but I always felt like I had wasted $65+ on the exact cut I already had. Needless to say, having someone else cut my hair seems like a waste of time...until now. This month I seriously chopped my already short pixie cut so much so that I had spots in the back where my scalp showed. ooooops! I was feeling a little unsure about the back but figured it looked alright and wasn't so bad that I had to wear a hat in public. I was walking down the little strip in echo park, getting a coffee with my boyfriend, when I popped my head into this little salon. I was curious about the prices for a cut. I still don't know what caused me to stop, but I am glad I did. Everyone was super sweet and informative. I was greeted with smiles and kindness (unlike many places where you get attitude and sass). I was talking about my recent haircut mess up and Nicole came over. She's a wonderful person and I was taken by her kindness and sincerity. She offered to clean the back up and within minutes and a few buzzzzzzes of the clippers I was a very confident lady again. She had made the back of my hair look wonderful and only charged a small fee. I didn't mind as I had just popped in and because of how awesome everyone was. go see Nicole. She listens to what you want, offers options, and will make you feel really comfortable. I may just start going to her for regular cuts...this coming from a girl who hates haircuts. She's amazing. + total bonus, my boyfriend was 100% comfortable chillin' while I got the cut. He was happy I was happy but even more pleased that it only took a few minutes and didn't push back any of our plans for the day. read more

Despite Eli's unfortunate incident, I HIGHLY recommend Lucas! The staff is very friendly, the location is a little funky, the stylists are utterly fantastic and the experience simply fab. I love this place.... I've been going here for about 5 years. I have tricky hair... I call it baby hair. It's dark blond, fine with a slight wave to it and I've got some unfortunate cowlicks. I've never had nice hair, and hardly ever received compliments on it. That is until Taylor started doing it. I've had nothing but great cuts and color here, and I now (very much to my surprise) get lots of compliments on my hair. The stylists here strike the right balance between hip and classic cuts... I've never walked out feeling like some teenager who's trying too hard. I've sent lots of friends and strangers to Lucas, and all I've heard back from have been happy with their experiences. Taylor does my hair, both my sisters', and my mother's... all with completely different styles and hair types, but always with the same great end results. I'll go to Lucas as long as I live in LA... Nina's haircuts are great. I have straight longish, hair and she does a rock solid job. She styles it kinda sexy/flirty and the cut is solid, so it looks hip for weeks. I just can't afford her all the time, it's worth it though. Also, her cuts hold their style for ALOT longer than other cuts I get, so the price is worth it. The salon is the least friendly salon I've been too. It's not unfriendly, just not the girlie, salon I'm used to. They seem to be getting better though, and most importantly, they get the job done. read more

Lisa is so awesome! I have big hair- strawberry blonde-coarse and wavy (red)/straight and fine(blonde). It's a mixed deal. She manages to tame my hair- The perfect mix of a classic cut with just enough texture to let me have some play with it. I can blow it out straight or leave it to air dry and the BEAUTY is that when it grows out- it holds the style. I always love my haircuts from her and she is such a good listener. I found her because I met a woman with a mane like mine and I sort of pounced on her because it's so hard to find someone who can manage to cut with precision and vision- I ran into this woman at the salon the day I got my haircut -- she had just got her haircut and we both laughed- because Lisa makes you feel good about yourself.
