well, we used them for dog walking all most a year and we never liked their policy of having to pay for a month of services BEFORE the month started. this was an anticipated # of days which did not work out for us because there were always days when we needed to cancel some months. then a credit for unused (but paid) days was never clear and seemed to favor the company and not the customer. their accounting system is questionable, we had increases to our walk fee without notice and if you pay by credit card you are charged an extra 3% which can really add up. when asked for an invoice each month, it was like an unheard of request. it took 3-4 months (and many calls and emails to remind them) until they could send me past invoices and then each month we got one before the end of the month so we could pay by check to avoid their 3% fee. they were dependable on walkers but we cancelled them due to their attitude and lack of solid accounting practices. then when we cancelled, they made me come to their office to pick up the keys to our home instead of dropping them at our house. AND i asked for a refund of the days i cancelled in December and was told they do not give refunds but apply to the next month and i said we cancelled your service, i want my money back and she said no...read your contract. to me it would just be proper customer service to refund us the $100 but they don't seem to get it. we never used them for styling. questionable customer responsiveness. every time i said something to dave, he said he would talk to ramie and she would get back to me which NEVER Happened. done with them. read others reviews before hiring or shopping there. this is not a one customer complaint. read more

I am extremely mad with Foolow your Nose, I have an Australian Terrier who needs grooming and I showed pictures to the Groomer (some Russian lady - Keira or what ever her name was, tall, skinny and can't speak English very well) she said she will groom my puppy according to the picture I showed (the picture is also an Australian Terrier) when I picked up my puppy - he turned out as a Chihuahua , that groomer was not sorry and she said I gave her a picture of a different picture - she lied- the lady owner also lied saying my puppy did not have enough hairs what a lie what a lie- everyone do not go to Follow Your Nose to have your pups groomed they do not know what they are doing.... read more

We recently went into the store and found the owners berating each other in the back of the store..HOW UNPROFESSIONAL.! My wife and I had to talk louder to make ourselves heard to the staff in the front room. What a way to run a business a very bad first impression. We have frequented other pet services in Evanston and this one had the worst business etiquette we've discovered. The other customers as well as ourselves were very uncomfortable with hearing all this screaming that didn't seem to stop even after they found us in the front of the store waiting. Eventually we found the owner Ramalie very rude in her tone and wouldn't allow me a word in during our conversation - very pushy . Then she starting talking about the other services they offered other than what we came in asking for?.! Then to make matters worse she began lying to us about the products that both of us were already familiar with from HSC. As a last note she then began this convoluted story to explain herself why she had been conducting herself like that in a customer service environment. Truthfully, at that point my husband and I decided to leave and we didn't feel welcome or comfortable with how we were treated and left quickly with a bad taste in our noses. Needless to say we were very unimpressed with their store or the services they offered. Later on my husband checked them out with the Better Business Bureau and was stunned to discover that they had changed their name several times to avoid eviction. I later found out from another reliable source that they have lawsuits pending, court filings unanswered and owe their vendors outstanding bills having never paid anyone on time and/or never paying people outright. Very poor business practices. Save your time and and give your pets they care they deserve. BEWARE. Folow Your Nose elsewhere. I wish we had read the other reviews first before we wasted our time. Be very careful and wary of them. The charge ahead of time and when you ask them to reconcile the charges on your card they get belligerent and blame you! They have been under several different names and there's a reason. I had used them for years for my back yard and would still be using them for my yard and my dog walking if the owner had been able to figure out her bookkeeping and had not called me "mean" for saying I wanted her to reconcile the $1200 worth of charges she charged to my credit card. I wish I had read the reviews before hiring them. All the negative reviews on this post correspond to my experiences with this business. Not only did they refuse to refund money when I had inadvertently paid twice, but the owner's wife hung up on me when I was trying to explain the situation. Her "reasoning" was contradictory: payment was due in full at the time of the walk (it was paid) as well as saying that some of their clients let them keep the extra money for future walks. I am not a mental health professional but I sense something very wrong here. The rage with which I was met, the surliness of the owners and the overall inability to resolve differences was disquieting to say the least. Do yourself a favor and find another provider. read more

I have not used the pet sitting service...this is a review of the store and my experience there today. I had been looking for a comfortable-to-sleep-in fleece and boots that were easy to get on. I went to several petco, pet supplies, and petsmart stores and thought I'd have to design what I wanted! I was thrilled to find choices at Follow Your Nose. They have a good selection of things. This is the second time I've been there and both times I was given helpful information and treated well. I'd rather give a local, well-supplied company my business than the chain stores. read more

It is disheartening to read numerous negative reviews based on a news story of an unfortunate event that did not happen to the reviewers and has already been widely publicized. While I think it is very sad, any business can be unfortunate enough to have a bad employee. I have not needed a dog walker and this is about the store. I have been so pleased with the fantastic results from the dog food and toys that were recommended for my rescue collie who had a nervous stomach after being abused, underfed and mistreated before he was abandoned in rural Wisconsin and was lucky enough to find his way to a collie rescue. The owner listened intently, insisted on giving me numerous free samples so that I could try out the product before purchasing and directed me to not the most expensive food but the food she feeds her own dogs. Beyond spending a huge amount of time with us she also let us use the groupons we got as a gift for Christmas even though we already had purchased two (not knowing that we would receive them for Christmas). I enjoy supporting local businesses and they went out of their way to also help us order a soft cloth muzzle when I was concerned about him barking and scaring people (collies were bred to watch over their family and flock and watch over us he does!). They ordered a different size for us and let us exchange it with no hassle whatsoever. I know small boutique stores often have all sales final (except for defect) as they are not mega stores and they arent selling Procter and Gamble animal by product foods with huge markups because the cost of imgredients is nothing. My other collies all had health problems when I adopted them and all lived tone about 15 because I researched independent sources like Whole Dog Journal and then supported those people who cared enough to stock those products without the massive margins. As a less than year long resident of Evanston I hope Follow Your Nose is here to stay. read more

I wish I could give more stars...but there are pluses and minuses here....& the negative reviews are believable. Ramie knows a lot about pet food...& that's it. They do sell some good products, like dog boots, shampoo, toys, and a dental product that's hard to find. Most employees (like virtually everyone working in the pet industry) know NOTHING. They sell prong collars, harnesses, & flexis---wrong for most dogs (my sister is a hobby dog trainer). As to service...it used to be they'd have dog walkers call in to the business from the homeowners house phone when they arrived, and then after the 20 minute walk. Since so few people have a home phone anymore, there is no way to make sure the dog is actually walked (even if the walker signs the log). I asked, because I wanted to use them for dog walking. If it's not 1 of the owners, you just have to trust. My dogs are old. I need to be sure they are walked. I might or might not try them again, but what I would do is ask to meet the walkers, so I could possibly have a relationship with them...that might assure me. Or telling the dog walker to take a picture of my dog in front of my house, outside. Then I'd know my dog would at least be out! I know how hard it must be to make a small business profitable, but my concern is my pets---not their profitability. read more

I recently walked in looking for a harness for my little dog. My dog is a weird shape, so finding a harness that fits properly has always been a problem. We have been very happy with Follow Your Nose over the past 20 months that we've lived in Evanston. Their location and business hours are very convenient. We've used their pet sitting services once, but we are frequent customers for cat food. The staff has been very helpful in guiding us to both dry and canned food products. Our cats are very elderly and diet is important in order to ensure quality of life in their later years. When we were exploring options for dry food, we were given many samples and the one that we were told is "cats' favorite", turned out to be the favorite for our cats, too! We've used Follow Your Nose pet sitting service for many years. First for our golden retriever and cat and now our cats. They have never failed us and often go above and beyond. One time I had locked the storm door and Dave had to get into the house via a window! He also took the dog to the vet when he was having a problem. I am so impressed with this place. The owners were very nice and helpful. I walked in with my dog because of a groupon. My dog has had digestive issues and a sensitive stomach. I was given a large bag full of samples because the owner did not want me wasting my money, even if it was a groupon. The samples were to find the right food that my dog would like. Then the male owner carried the bag to my car for me. And they deliver! Pretty amazing service and well beyond anything im use to. read more

I will never return to this store. I have periodically shopped there over the past 5 years, and each experience gets worse and worse. Initially I sought them out for toys and treats for my dog. I had one helpful experience with one of the owners when seeking food for my dog who was having some digestive issues. But the food they insisted would be the solution... wasn't. So much for their "expertise". I also found a great coat for him there, but now that I have to replace it, they never seem to have the one I want in stock. I have been told several times the are expecting an order "this week", but when I check still none in the size or color I need. I finally asked for them to call me when the coat came in. No call. So the adequate-to-good customer service that I once received has just gotten worse and worse. Just about 2 months ago, I was questioned by the clerk about where I shop for food. When I told her that I go to a chain that is very convenient to my work, she spewed insults about the store and the people who work there for several minutes, making me feel VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and just wanting to leave so it would stop! I had another terrible experience returning and items, with the same above clerk seemingly trying to make me feel stupid for not knowing their return policy, and asking questions. And when I went (for the last time) to use the credit, it was gone. For several minutes, no one could find the credit I was assured would be there forever. But the woman helping me finally looked that the balance on my account and found it. Maybe someone should train the help... Needless to say, I am done. We used Follow Your Nose for dog walking and food purchase for over 8 years. Never had an issue with the dog walkers, they seemed capable. When there was a change in our plans, they were able to take care of our needs. So, why the one star rating? It became too difficult dealing with the owner regarding billings. Because of their system of billing in advance, it was near impossible to reconcile actual walks to scheduled walks and woe to any customer who pays late. You are charged a $15 late fee for services that have not yet been provided. I will not bore you with unauthorized charges to our charge card for walks(this was to be for food purchases only) and the six months it took to finally receive a incorrect reconciliation of billings to services rendered. When we changed walking services, I estimated that we had overpaid $400 for unpaid services. If you wish to use them for walking services, insist on monthly reconciliations of your account. I will not accuse them a knowingly charging in error, what I will accuse them of is terrible bookkeeping. Keep your sheets to match up to their details. It is a shame they chose to lose a customer who was paying over $3,000 a year in service. read more

I'm not usually a Yelper but I feel obligated to help balance out the negative reviews from past years. I suppose it is feasible that this shop used to have issues but I could not have had a better experience when visiting on Saturday. I bought a Groupon and decided to go in and see what they had. I ended up loading up on some good quality and reasonably priced treats. I don't think their markup is any more than any other boutiques in the area. I checked out apparel and collars/leashes and they were a little pricey but again, no more than other shops in the area. I brought my dog with me and was greeted as soon as we entered. There was an adoptable cat hanging around so I made sure to tell them my dog is cat friendly. But there were other dogs around so they put the cat in her play pen. After a few minutes one of the employees gave my dog a treat, then held my merch at the counter while I walked around some more. After a few more minutes another employee checked in with me. They were super polite and answered my questions about a treat canister they used to sell. It was really a great experience and I plan on going back. read more

I agree with the reviewer who said this place is shady. Beware of their 'free' delivery service. I was down with pneumonia in January and down to my last kibble. I called the store to see if they could deliver some dog food the same day and was assured they would load it in the owner's car asap and bring it over. I prepaid of course. No show. I called the next morning and got the run around but was assured I would get it right away. No food. Finally, I got the owner who told me there was no 'guarantee' as it was 'courtesy' and they would deliver when they had time. The rest of that conversation was very unpleasant with her ending by telling me never to set foot in her store again. Not a smart business move as I have 3 dogs and also cats. Haven't gone back since. This owner (the wife) is Cruella deVille incarnate and treats her employees very badly from what I have witnessed. It's too bad as I loved the store. It's really cute and near my house and carries really good products. Oh and she took her time reversing the charges on my card. Just a very very bad bad bad place. read more
