This was the most mid Mexican food I have ever had. The dining room didn't have air conditioning on when we first came in on a Sunday afternoon, but I guess they decided to switch it on while there were people pulling out hand held fans and wiping their sweat off. I am assuming the heat inside was why there were grease/sweat patches on the edge of the table I was seated on. The birria tacos were very average, the rice that came with it was absolutely bland and the pastor enchiladas were alright but the meat was mostly charred. The horchata was so dilute, I couldn't taste anything. The only saving grace were the chips and salsa - especially the salsa. This is probably the best Mexican food I've ever had. The serving sizes were HUGE and the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. I wasn't a huge fan of the salsa but it filled me up and was tasty enough. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful! You can see there is so much culture in this place and the staff was super friendly. I saw some other people having issues with staff but that wasn't my experience. DOWNSIDE they don't currently have their liquor license . I don't know what the issue is and quite frankly it was a bummer. That's the only reason I gave them a 4 . The food was so good I honestly didn't mind too much though. We stopped by for happy hour after a work event. We got a table for 8 without a problem, and did not have to wait to sit down. The decor is really colorful and fun. There is lots to look at and many different seating areas, both inside and outside on the enclosed patio. Parking is on the street and metered. There are many different kinds of margaritas and mezcal drinks (different sizes, flavors, rocks/frozen and spirits). The drinks come out in festive glasses with assorted fruit slices and little Mexican flags. There is also food but I did not eat this visit. I had a regular sized house margarita on the rocks that was okay. The large sizes looked huge! Unfortunately, the service really left a lot to be desired. Yes, it was busy, but it was a Friday evening so it is probably always busy. The service is why I am giving only two stars (instead of four or even five stars). I have Celiac Disease and needed to make certain that the drinks were gluten-free prior to ordering. It took me asking several times, since our waiter told me that there wasn't anyone there who knew what was in the drinks (what?). When he came back with the food and drinks, there was some stuff missing that had to be made and brought out a few minutes later. El Burro Loco used to be the go-to spot in the Central West End -- loud, lively, full of color, tequila, and tacos that slapped (in a good way). It had that party vibe that made you feel like you were on vacation... even if you just came from the dentist down the street. But lately? The magic's gone a bit loco. Let's start with the atmosphere. What was once festive now just feels... tired. Like the walls themselves are hungover from better days. The furniture looks like it's been through one too many Cinco de Mayo benders, and the music can't decide if it wants to party or nap. The food? Ehh. It's not bad, but it's definitely not the flavor-packed fiesta it used to be. The tacos were forgettable, the rice was doing its best impression of cardboard, and the queso tasted suspiciously like sadness and Velveeta. This is the ultimate spot in STL for a strong margarita. I know I can always count on El Burro to fulfill my piña colada cravings. Service is always amazing. The chips and salsa are brought out the moment you sit down at your table. Water cups are refilled regularly. The food always comes out shockingly fast, too, even on their busiest nights. The food isn't anything special in my opinion. It's often overly greasy for my liking and it sometimes seems overpriced. If I do order food here, I'll usually go for their chicken street tacos, which come with a side of rice and beans. Most of the time, I find myself grabbing dinner beforehand somewhere else and landing here solely for the margs because they're that good! They somewhat recently renovated the interior, and I love the new look. It's much brighter and more inviting! However, the restrooms are usually pretty yucky, especially on the weekends. Service was average ( restaurant wasn't busy and it wasn't the fastest service). My biggest reason for 3 stars is the margarita. I love a good margarita as much as the next person, out this one was not good AT ALL. Like 0/5 good. It tastes like straight tequila. I can handle a stronger margarita don't get me wrong, but this tasted like straight tequila and I wasn't able to drink it. Mind you, a pitcher is $35 which is a little crazy to me. I had to take it home to try to make it taste better with simple syrup and strawberry puree but it was just too strong. BE WARE!!! If you enjoy El Burro Loco CWE you should know this: They don't have a liquor license. They're under new ownership. The food has no taste. The meat taste old. Fried chicken is fried in grease with no seasonings. Your waitress will edit her tip!!! Management will treat you like you're the problem when you return and complain of theft with proof. My bill was $52. The waitress charged my card $83. I only tipped her $8. I didn't notice this until 2 days later when the transaction finalized on my card. If you think that's a fluke/accident....My friend was with me. His bill was $22. He tipped her $10 cash and paid the $22 on his card. Sunday his transaction finalized for $32. These are their practices. I don't appreciate being robbed in that way. I must say the owner finally agreed to give us back the stolen money. I also made her give me back my tip amount. The Pollo Con Arroz is the ONLY meal that I can seem order whenever I visit this restaurant, I can't seem to get enough of it, it's the best hands down, along with the banana margarita that I ordered. The service is always amazing. The enchilada was good but was just a folded tortilla with cheese inside. The chile relleno was okay. The batter was very tough and lacked flavor. The chile was very small and was tender. The margaritas were pretty good. Priced right and tasty. The server that helped us had no personality at all. Everything was one word answers and very abrupt. She was not kind or wanted to help. We asked for pepper over three times and the last time she just took it from patrons sitting at the table across from us. The other patrons were not happy with that move. We took the pepper back to them and apologized for her actions. Our waters were never refilled and no one asked how our meals were. We will only go back if we do not get her as our server. I had one very good dinner "date" there with a nice table with a view, margs were good chips were so-so. As that was my first time and I had enjoyed it I came back 3 more times. Each subsequent visit not a good table so that starts the evening vibe off. The last time I was there I understood that a part of the ceiling (mebbe roof too?) had fallen in and the center of the floor area had a huge blue tarp strung up around it. I couldn't get anyone to elaborate on it or how the kitchen was protected from the elements. The last straw tho was I had to escort one of my party to the restroom which meant we had to circumnavigate the blue tarp. That took us thru the bar area. It had seated patrons AT the bar and tables opposite them with a skinny path between them. There was a very large person sitting with his chair obstructing the only path to the restroom. I excused myself several times but the man didn't respond. I couldn't get by him and finally the bartender said something to him and the guy looked us over and pulled his chair in just enough to get by. There would have been no need for this issue if a manager or server had got to the guy before he got comfortable and asked him to scoot in. Anyway the food is about the same as Mexican everywhere else, the margs are pretty good and strong. I judge the quality of a Mexican restaurant by three things: cleanliness, how good are the house tortilla chips, how good are the margs? To me there are better values than found here but then again the margs are good & strong. I don't order anything fancy, usually fajitas or fish tacos so for me to rate on those is not fair to the place. read more

There is always music playing in the background. I mainly come here for the margarita's. I'm cool with just sipping on the drinks and eating their chips and salsa. I love the fact that the chips are brought to the table warm along with your own personal bowl of salsa so you don't have to share. I don't want to have to worry about others double dipping. They also have a really good queso dip when you're looking for something a little extra to go with your chips instead of just salsa, for those times when you really don't want to eat, eat but just want to drink and coat your stomach. The food here is simply just "OK". I've tried the chicken taquitos, steak and chicken fajitas, rice and beans. The food lacks a little extra seasoning. The presentation is picturesque but the flavor profile is lacking. My go-to margarita is the Cadillac Margarita. That's my favorite so far. I also enjoy the frozen mango margarita. I love that they give you several size options for your enjoyment and the prices are perfect. They offer a wide variety of flavors to fit your fancy. I just know before hand that I'm only here to drink and not eat so I plan accordingly. I will continue to explore other food options on the menu. It's confusing. Maybe you have to get used to it. We got there before what should have been the dinner rush on a Sunday evening. We were looking forward to sitting outside, it was a gorgeous day. We went inside and there was no indication of what to do. I mean, like no sign, no host stand. So we stood there inside the door that was marked opposite the exit sign. We waited a few minutes while people milled around until someone said they'd be right with us. After a short while we were finally greeted and we asked to sit outside. It was a great area to sit in. It's nice and shaded. The chairs could be a little more comfortable but that's neither here nor there. Here is the experience in a nutshell: -Friendly staff but not overly attentive. -Plastic forks and knives which make it difficult to eat properly like adults. -Fajitas Locas is very thinly sliced pieces of beef and chicken with (for one person) two shrimp, chorizo and carnitas pork. Unfortunately the thin slicing on the meat, at least for me, made for dry meat. -The tortillas were not warm. -The rice and beans are typical of what you'd find anywhere else in any mexican restaurant in the US. -The one great thing I'll admit, though, is that for the chips and salsa the chips really tasted like good corn chips. If it wouldn't be for the fact it's in the Central West End it would be a mediocre meal and not as crowded. But....location location location. Those calling it an "authentic mexican restaurant" apparently have never been to one. Will we go back? Probably not. There are less crowded mexican restaurants in StL and, at this quality, they are a dime a dozen. read more

There is tons of space indoor and some outdoor, and parking is on the street. The interior is decorated pretty extensively and puts out a fun vibe. We started with the house margaritas on the rocks, which were a bit too sweet for my liking. The next ones we had were pineapple jalapeño, and that hit just right. I have previously had the taco salad twice, and both times it consisted of quite predominantly lettuce and very little toppings. I felt like I had ordered a half head of lettuce. We were sat immediately and shortly thereafter received chips and salsa. Both were delicious as was the pink lemonade. I didn't see fries on the menu but I asked for some and they were ok. They were fried a bit too hard and tasted like those potato stix (chips). For my entree I got the combo meal and got 2 chimichangas with shredded chicken and the rice and beans. It wasn't the best chimichanga I've had, but it wasn't the worst. The chicken could've been more seasoned and it was pretty dry. The rice and beans were very good. My other guest got the nachos with different meat and that was probably the best tasting meat I've had on nachos at a Mexican restaurant. It was fresh, you could taste all of the grilled flavor, and while it only had 2 shrimp on top, the other meat was plentiful. I never get nachos at a Mexican restaurant because I feel it's redundant to the free chips and salsa, but next time I will order these. I've been wanting to try this place out for awhile since it seems like one of the quintessential restaurants in Central West End because it's so colorful. My experience though was just very okay partly because of the customers and partly because of the service. I ordered the Pastor Enchiladas which were quite good. Appreciated the sour cream which mixed very well with the beans and rice. The enchilada itself was pretty good too with the tender pork. I will say that this place feels a little bit whitewashed as I wouldn't say the flavors were as authentic as other places in St. Louis like the ones Cherokee Street. I did appreciate the free chips and salsa though, which they literally gave a salsa per person. Every restaurant should do this by the way. But beyond the food, I didn't realize that this was THE place to get drunk at on a Sunday night which there were a lot of people doing just that. Wouldn't say it's very kid friendly as these people were extremely drunk. The locations also had a lot of loud cars showing off and roaring around which can be bit of a distraction.
