I came here for a birthday celebration with a group of girls and for the most part my experience here was pretty good. Service was quick and efficient. I came here with a Gilt City deal for brunch and I have to say - the food was delicious. I wish I could give it 5 stars and, based solely on the food, I probably would. The guacamole was excellent. The drinks (we both has Rosalitas) were delicious. And our huevos rancheros were awesome, too. However, the service was pretty terrible. I'm not sure if they didn't care about us because we came in with a Gilt City voucher, but it took them forever to come take our order and they barely paid attention to us for the rest of our time there, with the exception of continually seating people RIGHT next to us and then moving them to a different table due to the close quarters... Fonda has restored my faith in NYC Mexican food. If you want gourmet Mexican like you used to get in Texas or California, this is the place. Everything brought to the table was excellent, but the most outstanding items were the guacamole, the Pollo Norteño, and the black beans. The tortillas tasted freshly made. Fonda is a 3.5 restaurant but I gave it a 4 for the friendly, efficient service, the guacamole appetizer for two, their backyard patio and their creative use of space. The food at Fonda's is real Mexican food, not Southwest fusion, so if you are not into spicy food, be forewarned the food here has a kick to it. We began with Margaritas that were ok. Next we had the guacamole for two with their exceptional homemade soft tortillas. For the main course we ordered the vegetable enchiladas and the chile rellno con pollo. The sauce on the enchiladas was too spicy for my GF and the chile relleno was good but not exceptional. I fell head over heels for the Manhattan Fonda during restaurant week last year so I've had a visit to the Park Slope Fonda on my to-do list for some time. Last night I finally got around to crossing that off the list. Like the Manhattan location, the menu here is clearly touched by its James Beard nominated chef and takes Mexican cuisine to a whole new honored level. The food is just as outstanding and the drinks are super strong. Once again, if I'm paying for a drink with alcohol in it, well then, thank you for putting alcohol in it. It's the little things ya know? The Rosalito is a simple margarita and could seem like it would be a boring choice, but it's actually treated like a classic in a Grace Kelly sort of way. In general, Fonda treats cocktails and margaritas with the same respect as their food. Something I always love to find in a restaurant. Our Friday night bartender was wonderful. He was funny and attentive, and graciously let us know when his shift was over so that we could appropriately show our appreciation for the fun night he showed us, all with a keen sense of professionalism and tact. I'm giving the Brooklyn location five stars because of the bartender and the general atmosphere on a Friday night. This place has been on my bookmark for over two months and I finally was able to make it. I made reservations thank god. The place was really packed. We waited at least about 10-15 minutes extra with reservation. We ordered the breakfast burrito bacon, eggs, potatoes and cheese along side this sauce with guacamole with chips and to our surprise it also came with tortillas. That was plus on my book never had guacamole with soft tortillas and it was delicious. Waiter was very nice but the $29 you pay for all you drink we managed to at get 4 drinks and my fiancé 3. But I will say the mimosas were great and the margaritas that my fiancé had were good and strong! We spent two hours there and felt very comfortable no pressure to leave. I managed to see the plates that the couple next to me order it had skirt steak which is my favorite so next time that's on my list to try. We walked up and down 7th trying to avoid going to another taco joint. After getting water, reviewing the menus at a few spots we found ourselves at Fonda (our parking was right out front). Walking into the door, I saw the meal for me at another table. Let me say, The host and waiter Winston was friendly and helpful. He told me about the chicken tortilla soup that I was eyeballing, walked us through some great options, yet still served the whole room. Great job Winston. Next the sweet plantains, the twist on Mexican Corn & the carne asada tacos where off the chain. So much so my wife ordered the pork tacos (no swine for me) and liked them. But dude order the soup! Hooray! Finally, a Mexican restaurant to make this native Los Angelina happy again! The food is fresh, spiced to perfection and perfect portions. The mole enchiladas were great, the guacamole was great (and I'm picky about that), the drinks were great and even dessert was special and delicious and creamy. We loved everything. Of course, there may be a wait to sit, but that is just the sign of a great restaurant. Also, if service is slow, relax New Yorkers, that is just the way we do it on the west coast. Fonda is still perfect. I've been here 4 times now, and each time has been wonderful. I'm updating my review for the amazing service- they are so, so accommodating of my dairy allergy that the waiter saw me going for a cheese-free bite of beans and warned me that there was a tiny bit of cheese sprinkled on the plate, so I should be careful! Also, my large party of friends came in on a recent winter evening and although there was no room inside the restaurant, they set up the heating lamps on the back patio and we had a warm-and-toasty outdoor winter feast with a patio to ourselves under twinkly lights and delicious margaritas. Nothing could be better. Definitely my favorite restaurant in South Park Slope, and my favorite place to take New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike. read more

Let's start with the good: the guacamole was really delicious and came with both chips and fresh tortillas. Now, for the bad: everything else. Our main courses took forever to come, and when they did, they were both terrible. The vegetarian enchiladas tasted as though they had dumped an entire shaker of salt on the dish, then attempted to cover it with half a pound of cilantro. The rice and my mango torito were also absurdly salty. My boyfriend's food was equally gross. Furthermore, no one ever checked on us to see if our food was okay or if we wanted more beverages. I am a big fan of Mexican food. Living as long as I did in Southern California, you have to be, or you will be driven summarily insane. Fonda sated that fan in me. Beginning with their handmade guac, the meal was spot on from start to finish. My dining companion started with the tortilla soup, which i had to watch her eat. The delightful aroma made it difficult alone, but it was even more difficult after she shared a bite with me. It was served nice and classy as well, with the soup poured into a bowl of crispy tortilla strips at the table. My turn eventually came, with a tender-oh so tender-pork adobo. Sweet and nicely seasoned, it came with handmade tortillas that i stuffed to the brim with delicious pork goodness. I am also proud to say that I hit the tortilla to filling ratio perfectly, leaving just enough adobo to fill a few left over chips from the guacamole. The lady friend had the duck zarape, which was good, but what got me was the sauce it was served with. A bright orange tomato-habenaro cream sauce, it wasn't too spicy, but matched the zarape perfectly. And I am a man that goes for food that is bright orange any day of the week. This place is soo great. As soon as I walked in I knew this was gonna be a great experience. The atmosphere is so nice and the menu looked decadent and enticing. I was told about a 45 minute wait and I decided to tough it out. The 45 minute wait turned into a short 30 minute wait and everything was nice. Right before we came in the owner was talking to is giving us tips and said that he will get us a table and he even made it for us. The Food We started off with the guac medium spicy and it was really tasty with a nice kick. My sister had the steak and chicken taquitos witch were presented well but was a little dry but was great when paired with the guacamole. My uncle had the red snapper witch was a nice portioned meal and very fresh. I had the enchiladas suizas which was really flavorful and had a nice tang to them. My father enjoyed the steak with mushrooms and I tasted it and it was reall nice. The meal all came with rice and beans and we ordered the sweet plantains. We ordered chicken enchiladas which tasted ok but looked pre-made. Heated up and served. Sides of rice (basic white with a few green leaves chopped on top) and soupy black beans. We have been to Fonda a few times and it's always a relaxing and great experience. Today we had brunch with our four year old daughter, and they brought us a side of grilled chicken and cheese quesadillas for her that were not on the menu. The brunch special is well worth it for the food, drinks and ambience. You get your choice of brunch entree and three drinks for $27. The backyard has distanced tables and a canopy, along with fast and courteous service, and the street seating is nice as well. They don't take reservations which isn't a challenge for late day brunch but could be for dinner. Dinner wise go for the carnitas in any form, or the hanger steak. I usually get my Mexican food thirty blocks south of here, in places without exposed brick walls and candlelight. But I was out with friends, and needed a little place to duck in for drinks and a snack. They were wrapping up dinner service, so we sat at the bar. There were a few things I didn't get, like cheese on top of the otherwise very good guac. Why would you do that? Same goes for the chipotle sauce on the fish taco. The food was good enough that such flourishes seemed pointless and distracting. Especially when other details, like their homemade tortillas were spot on. They obviously know what they're doing, they're just choosing to do it a little bit funny. I have only eaten lunch here once. Now, it was amazing but I want to talk about the happy hour. See, whenever its 4PM on the weekend and my wife and I find out that we've missed Brunch, We go to Fonda. I have probably been to the happy hour somewhere between 8-10 times. The happy hour consists of $5 food items, and $6 cocktails. I would recommend the frozen Rosalita and the taquitos. Go with a friend (or spouse) so you can share the chips and guacamole. The filling was a little lacking and the scallops were tiny but I didn't care because it was all about the hazelnut mole. That shit is delicious!!! I love hazelnut but usually only get to have it in coffee or nutella form. I loved the savory spicy form of this dish. The hazelnut flavor was super strong and yet not overpowering, and there were so many other flavors and spices going on, it definitely had a little kick. I could've eaten that mole like soup. The sangria was really sweet and fruity, but in a good way. Aside from my bf who got the pork chop and couldn't even finish it, we all thought proportions were small - at first. By the time we'd cleaned our plates and let it sink in for a few (without even finishing the small family-style rice and beans), we were totally full. I had never been to Fonda and went for valentines because they had a reasonable price prix fixe. I'll start with the bad. We had to wait around 30 minutes in the freezing cold after arriving at our reserved time, the hostess mumbled our name so quietly if we hadn't been right behind her we wouldn't have heard and I'm wondering if that was her intention, tables seated after us were served guac and drinks before us even though we ordered before them, and they ran out of one of the desserts which I had been excited for. Otherwise the experience was pretty good. The guacamole was good and you could get it with chips or tortillas which worked out well because my girlfriend and I prefer different things. The sopa de tortilla was terrible for me, borderline inedible. It tasted like a bowl of salty chicken gravy. The flautas were amazing, fresh and crispy and highly recommended. The pollo norteno was good as well, well seasoned and the cured red onions gave it a nice contrast. My girlfriend got the carne asada which was cooked well and not too mushroomy, the sauce was rich and creamy and we both enjoyed it. For dessert I we had the tres leches and some apple empanadas. The tres leches was very good though I didn't enjoy the empanadas. I had a hibiscus margarita with my meal, I'm not a huge tequila fan and it was ridiculously strong but I could see it being enjoyable. I have been to Fonda many times i prefer the Chelsea location 100%. This is my first time coming to Brooklyn Fonda location and I was shocked on how rude the manager Steven is. This was my mother's birthday and I had a table for 7. I got up to use the bathroom seconds away from putting my mask on but this manager has a terrible attitude towards this issue and said this is "STRIKE 1" and I apologized. Also this was our last round of drinks we wanted to drink it at the table but he gave us to go cups practically kicking us out for no reason being rudely .I DO NOT want to drink a Casamigos margarita from a plastic cup that's ridiculous. After paying the bill with my mask on he was behind the bar I approached him to ask for his name he talked to me super rude . Stated "YOU CANT TALK TO ME IM BEHIND THE BAR" with such a rude attitude and i said okay sorry I just wanted to know what your name is and he said my name is "Steven" I said great have a good day and right before leaving he said " if you have to say something than SAY IT" this was ridiculous his attitude was disgusting. I understand we are all going through this pandemic and this is all new to us . Next time you should say it nicely Steven :) . Besides this rude manager the servers were amazing food was great! Food was awesome! 3 stars is for the service. We had a reservation for a party of 6 and then were seated at a dirty table. The hostess didn't seem to care. Once seated we waited almost an hour for our drinks to finally show up, we reordered them 3 times, and they kept waiting us the drinks were on the way. The server apologized, let us know they were short staffed, but that was about it. Once the food started coming, things were great. We had the guacamole to start, a double order was good for 4 ppl, we also started with some carne asada taqueria, as well as some al pastor, both good. The sopa de tortilla was very good as well. The ingredients come in the bowl, and the broth is poured over them at the table. For entrees we had enchiladas, pescado en pozole verde, and carne asada con hongos. And for sides we had the plantanos fritos and the esquitos. Again, all the food was really well seasoned, well prepared and served nice and hot. The wait: perfectly decent for a surprisingly warm Tuesday night in March, and thoroughly acceptable considering we got to sit at the bar and order some gloriously tasty cocktails. The food: SO good. SO! GOOD! My friend and I shared the melted cheese with grilled chorizo as an app, and it was every bit the stringily cheesy salty delight we had hoped that it would be. I have always been and am still a great fan of Fonda. The food and drinks are consistently wonderful. BUT, as a local neighbor and loyal patron, I have been slowly disppointed over the past year. It is clear that the staff is pushed to over-pack the restaurant. The staff is clearly trained in techniques to rotate tables i.e. Pour you more and more water, ask how everything is going every 7 minutes, then, finally we were asked to basicaly leave because there were reservations waiting (there was no line, and another table of two available).
