Fonda is my new favorite spot in Park Slope. So happy I finally had the chance to give this place a try. Yes! The restaurant is beautiful and cozy - perfect for a dinner with friends or a first date. The tropical colors really make you feel like you're somewhere warmer than NYC, which is exactly what I was looking for on a rainy Friday night. The service was spot on. We had reservations for 9:15pm but showed up awkwardly early. No reason to worry - we were seated a whole hour before our reservation since a table had opened up. What luck! Our waitress was also amazing. She brought our drinks out promptly and made suggestions from the menu when she heard that I couldn't have dairy. I really appreciated her patience with me and my food allergies. I had the hibiscus margarita which was to die for. Sweet, salty, spicy, and strong. So many S words but I'm not mad at it! It was also beautifully made. Wish I had snapped a pic! Up next, we ordered the guacamole (spicy) which had the perfect amount of heat and onions. Some places take it too far with the onions to the point where the avocado is completely overpowered, but Fonda doesn't make rookie mistakes like that! The guac is served w. chips AND soft tortillas. This place knows the way to my heart. For our mains, we each got tacos so we could mix and match - steak tacos and al pastor (each came with 3 tacos). Don't let the portion size here fool you. These bad boys will fill you up. My steak was perfectly cooked, and the al pastor had a sweet and savory flavor to them that was subtle but so bomb. This is definitely my new favorite taco spot, but I could imagine that they're also amazing at everything else on this menu. FYI - they don't take Discover cards*** (not like anyone does these days) but they take Visa, MasterCard, and Amex so you are covered! ***Didn't realize people actually used Discover cards. This place was chosen at random and was pleasantly surprised. Me and my wife went around 4-5 o'clock and it was 10% full, when we finished the bar was packed and seating was at about 50% full at the front of the restaurant. We went for our anniversary and didn't spare on anything we wanted to eat. The bill still came out with tip around $150. I have heard good things about this place. Maybe it's just me but I didn't really enjoy the food as much as I thought I would. Service was 5/5. The food however was very salty. There were no other flavor besides salt. We got the zarape de pato, tacos and carne asada con hongos. The Zarape de pato had a nice sauce to it but I wasn't a big fan of how it was served. I thought it would be more of a taco as well. The steak again was salty. We couldn't even finish it. The only thing was the tacos. Overall I don't think I will personally come back. read more

So I have been dying to try Fonda for years!! Mainly because I'm always see them there advertisements for the hibiscus margarita with sugar on top. So I was delighted when my cousin decided to have her birthday gathering here. We sat at the bar since all the happy hour specials were at the bar. I got to try and assortment of different margaritas tequila's and other drinks and was amazed. We also had some Kwak and chips and other appetizers which all tasted great just please do not disappoint. I gave them four stars because I did not really experience the full restaurant. I didn't sit at a table and get waited on so I really can't tell you how the service is. When you're sitting at the bar the bartender it's right there in front of you so it's full-service always, but I can imagine that it's all good regardless... read more

W Went last night for dinner. Outdoor seating was nice and heated. Most of the food was good. Guaq was served in a large bowl but the portion is rather small and overpriced. The corn was just meh. Steak with mushroom was amazing and also the carne asada tacos. Salad it's got cheese was delicious. Pineapple cake was good, too. However our server, an older gentlemen, wasn't welcoming at all. He seemed unhappy with the amount of food we ordered, never asked how our food is. He would just pass by from visiting other tables and not even look at us. Usually servers check out and look at their tables on their way back to the restaurant.... We had to really try to get his attention..... other staff members were much nicer. We came here expecting top notch Mexican food and I was disappointed. First the guacamole, for $12, the portion was really small, it was quite plain. At this price, especially not in the city, I expected more. I had the taco de pescado, it's an appetizer dish but available in entree style. It was 3 fish tacos with a regular salad. There was too much batter on the fish and it was a bit dry, I believe it was overfried, I barely was able to taste the fish flavor. My tortilla was poorly made, it came apart and I couldn't hold the contents in. All my three other friends dishes did not come with rice and beans. They gave us a small bowl of rice and beans for all 4 of us, which I thought was not sufficient. Mexican food without rice and beans? Seems kind of unusual. You should make a reservation before you come. It is a good place for a date, atmosphere was good. This is a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn with city prices. After curtailing eating out for a while, I decided to take advantage of Restaurant Week this winter. My husband and I are so glad we got to go back to Fonda. We did the prix fixed menu and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We started with the broccoli/leek soup and the carne asada which certainly got our taste buds excited. Entrees were enchiladas vegetarianas and salmon con manchamante and dessert was citrus tres leches. I usually only like chocolate desserts but the tres leches was so good I ate half of it. I'm not sure what to say here. Food was somewhere between ok and good. We shared some guacamole and chips, the salmon on top of sweet potato mash and the chicken mole special. Food was good, service adequate, but in the age of Covid and employees doing so many different things it's understandable. SABROSO! In a nabe not lacking some upmarket Mexican, Fonda takes the cake. On a southern stretch of 7th Ave, this new spot seals the deal on food and service. A pretty garden in back is where I had my afternoon meal. Service was attentive and friendly. The food rocked. I ordered an enchilada suiza which can be ordered with scrambled eggs or chicken tinga. Topped with green tomatilo sauce and two cheeses, for $12 with a mimosa at brunch, I could have licked the plate the sauce was so delish. I asked for chips and they brought out some house fried gigantic salty monsters and a spicy red sauce(gratis). I read the chef was from Mexico City and award winning in Austin, Texas. My fiancé and I came here for dinner this past Saturday night. We called ahead to find out the wait for two and were told it is about 30 minutes out on the patio, which cannot be reserved ahead. We were told that we can make reservations for a table inside, but that they were booked until about 9:30 PM (we came at around 8:15/8:30). When we arrived we were told the same info and opted for the 30 minute wait for the patio seating. However, the hostess came back in one minute and told us she can separate a table for us and seat us right away. We got outside and there were about 4 empty tables (confused, if there are no reservations for the patio seating doesn't that mean that all of these tables are available?). I do recommend outdoor seating, as inside it feels a bit crowded and does get pretty noisy. We both ordered the hibiscus frozen margaritas. There were other flavors that I was interested in, including mango and watermelon, but those were all on the rocks and hibiscus was the only margarita that comes frozen. My fiancé then also ordered a mango margarita on the rocks. We also ordered the guacamole (mild). I would recommend ordering the medium, as we did not taste any spiciness at all (and I usually would go for the least amount of spiciness in anything I eat). We also ordered 3 tacos to share (chicken, beef, and pork) and a tres leches cake. The food was delicious and the drinks were great too (I just wish they had more frozen options). read more

I've never dined in at Fonda, but doing so is well up on my list of things I want to do when the pandemic ends. The other night Fonda served up probably the best delivery dinner we've had since the pandemic began and we started doing delivery only. My meal was delicious, with highlights including a luscious crab cake appetizer (I think it was a special that night) and a stellar rendition of one of my favorite Mexican dishes--carnitas. Flavors were vivid and true, portions were generous, my picky eater husband was happy too, and the meal held up well to the rigors of being delivered to the other end of the neighborhood on a cold night. I'm sure it would have been even more delicious properly plated and with an in-house cocktail to wash it down. read more

Was looking for a great happy hour spot with food and drinks and stumbled upon this place. My friend and I came in and sat at the bar (you can only get happy hour prices at the bar). The bartender was super nice and friendly. If you come in by yourself, you'll definitely have good conversation with the bartender. I ordered a red sangria and was surprised at the large glass. Usually places give you a tiny wine glass filled sangria. Their happy hour food menu is $6.00 per item. We ordered the guac and chips and Taquitos San Andres. The gauc was really fresh! They serve it in a large stone bowl. It didn't look like much, but as we were eating, we noticed that the portion was pretty large. If you run out of chips, you can ask for more. We enjoyed Fonda a lot in the Before Times, although we did not go often: it was often difficult to get a table or a seat at the bar. Their style of Mexican (fancy + if I'm not mistaken, Yucatan-style) is not my top favorite, but they do a fantastic job of it, and every dish I've had here has always been really tasty. Service has always been gracious and shown attention to detail. They are the #1 refined-dining Mexican restaurant in Park Slope, hands down (I'm not counting hole-in-the-wall/cheap taco places). COVID-era comments: I have been impressed with their attention to details during the pandemic in the two times we have dined on their outdoor patio in the back. Once their plastic menus felt damp as if they had been recently cleaned. All the workers appear masked indoors and outdoors any time that I've seen them. They have a touch-less payment system, and the second time I came, they provided hand sanitizer. The person who appears to be the manager or owner takes pains to keep his distance. I can't speak to the indoor dining conditions, but it seemed rather full inside. read more

We were in the City for the weekend and it was hot, hot, hot. We had heard about this place and decided to check it out. We were looking at the menu posted in the window and the specials were what made this a definite choice for us. Since we weren't that hungry, just wanted something light, the gazpacho sounded like the perfect choice. We arrived around 5:30 and didn't have a reservation, they could seat us at a table for an hour, we could sit at the bar, or we could outside on the back patio. We opted for the patio, which was shaded, had a nice relaxing vibe, and was the perfect choice for us. We decided on an order of the guacamole(we chose spicy) which is served with hand pressed tortillas, chips, and pasilla de Oaxaca salsa and the gazpacho de Sandia, chilled watermelon gazpacho with olive oil and chives. The guacamole was perfect, slightly chunky texture with just the right amount of heat. The gazpacho was excellent, great flavors, the perfect soup for a 90 degree day. For drinks we had the cucumber Fresca. Light refreshing drink for a hot summer night. Will definitely be back to check out more of the menu. read more

Thanks to my fellow Yelpers for the Enchiladas Suizas suggestion -- it was cheesy deliciousness, and tasted EVEN better the day after for leftovers. My friend got the Sopa de tortilla, and while the portion appeared small, because the soup and the fixings were separate containers, they raved about how great it was. Oh, and it came with some rice and black beans that were equally incredible. In short, the food is EXCELLENT and you shouldn't hesitate to order delivery. Ok so this may count as my most overdue review ever. I have been the duke for years with 82 check-ins but that doesn't count the 10 years I have been coming here B.Y. (before Yelp). So why not review??? Perhaps because I am a selfish bastard and don't want knowledge of Fonda's incredible happy hour to become more widespread. Any give Sunday and you will find my ass planted on a bar stool enjoying what has to be one of the highest quality happy hours in NYC. For $7 you get 3 of the best taquitos I have ever had anywhere at any price (on tortillas being made by hand a few feet away) then for another $7 you get incredible made to order guacamole, $7 more and you get a made to order fresh juice margarita with real not out of a 1.75 liter plastic jug margarita. I spring a $1 more for the mezcalita (note the mezcal they are using is about $45 a bottle for mere mortals). Yes of course you can find way cheaper happy hours but not with this quality of ingredients (the same ingredients people are paying 5x more for at tables 3 feet away. And yes, Fonda's non-happy hour food is excellent (but not cheap), but the reason we only do happy hour these days is purely for the pork taquitos...as for some Idiotic reason they don't serve them on the regular menu (why Fonda, why?). While I am in a secret telling mood, my final tip is get there at 3:45 if you want to get one of the 10 bar seats on a weekend. Monday has an all night happy hour but good luck getting a seat then. Of course given how strong drinks are you never have anyone surviving more than an hour or so. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for his birthday and it was such a good choice! We had originally planned to go somewhere else but it was empty like so many other restaurants in the area. But when we arrived at Fonda, it was packed! It was definitely a good sign. We ordered the Guacamole, ceviche de atun, de panza tacos, and the carne asada con hongos for our entree. Definitely get the guacamole! You can taste how fresh everything and the chips and tortillas with it are great! The pork belly in the tacos were so smokey and crunchy. It was interesting because it looks kind of burnt but it tastes so good! The steak from our entree was so good! It comes with rice and beans and everything tastes great on its own but the sauce for the steak pulls everything together making it so delicious! I'm also not a huge mushroom person but the mushroom with the steak was really good. I'm so glad we were able to find a really good Mexican place really close to home! Absolutely amazing Mexican food! We only regret not trying this place sooner! For the two of us, we ordered three appetizers and one entree to share and the potion was just right! Here's the breakdown Gazpacho Blanco is very refreshing and light with texture of almonds and grapes halves. Very nice summer special to cool the pallets for what comes next. The Zarape de Pato was very flavorful, thanks to the drenching tomato-habanero sauce which is so rich and creamy, with a great kick! The Flautas De Pollo was also crispy and yummy but I have to give it up for the other two apps! Fiancé enjoyed this one the most tho! We usually opt for guacamole at a Mexican establishment (duh) but we decided to skip this time because we just made our own the other night. It prob would be our reason to be back because everyone around us ordered the guac and it just looked so fresh and yummy! We had the Carnitas de Fonda as entree which was amazing and very fun to eat/share among two! You can build your own tacos with the pickle onion and peppers, salsa verde, rice and beans which come with the deal and the potion is quite generous and perfect for sharing! We just had the same disappointing experience as the prior reviewer. We've been ordering from Fonda for years, and eating in since they opened, and the food is always wonderful. But imagine my surprise when my $70 order didn't arrive with rice and beans--as it always has in the past. As the other poster, I called the restaurant to say they were left out only to be told this was a new policy, both in the restaurant and for take-out. This should have been communicated in the menu, as it pretty much ruined our dinner to have no accompaniments. I'd much rather they raised the price by a couple of dollars and continue to include the (very inexpensive) rice and beans. read more
