I haven't been here for a while, so some things regulars may take for granted were new to me. I arrived around 8 am today, a Sunday. First off, the woman who took my order and cut my meats appeared to be the same one who left a very good impression on me years before. Everything went smoothly. I ordered all my favorites - a half pound each of char siu and roast pork, and a half roast duck. I showed her a photo I took of her cutting and asked for permission to post it on Yelp, and she said it would be okay. In the past, I would hand over my physical card and worry it would come back greasy. I was pleased that I could use Google Pay. The total cost was in line with what I had anticipated, reasonable. I hurried home since I hadn't eaten yet this morning. I had some of everything along with some hot rice I prepared at home. I started with the duck, which I ate as is, without using the included sauce. It tasted as good as I had hoped. I also enjoyed the char siu and roast pork. They were just as I like them. It looks like the younger generation is taking over the business which I'm thankful for but I wish they would cut the pieces bigger like the old timers. I don't know if Fong's has the best char siu and roast pork in Chinatown (I haven't visited all of the different vendors, so I can't judge). However, it is my go to place to pick up char siu. I like that it's not too fatty and has good flavor. But if I am being honest, the real reason I keep going back is because of how nice the older guy working there is. He gives you samples of pork to taste, will bluntly tell you when the fatty no dye roast pork is not good that day and to order something else, and he doesn't yell aggressively and impatiently at you like some other folks in that area do. Not worth $17 per lb. The quality of the char Siu, more like half the price. Heck maybe I'll just make it myself next time in the oven... a little disappointing. It's dry and tough, and the coloring is too bright red, not the red that I see in Hong Kong. I wasn't expecting it would taste exactly like HK char siu, but this is really far from it. I was craving for duck, this duck does not disappoint. Half a duck is about $13 dollars, the lady chopped up for me and I paid cash. They accept credit cards too. Meanwhile, I saw live lobster selling here too, maybe next time. The duck has crispy skin and tender meat, it same with a small case of soy duck sauce. Parking, you asked? Was happy to finally stop by here and grab some delicious meats! We had gone to Fosters Botanical gardens and I figured since we were in the area to pick up some Roast Pork and Roast Duck. It's very easy to miss this place, but we parked on the street and I quickly placed my order and got the goods. The half duck we got was nice and meaty and full of flavor! Their pork was also just the right mix of fatty/meaty/crunchy. Both were seasoned perfectly where they had the delicious sauce and spices you want, while still maintaining the taste of the meat which seems to be the hardest balance to achieve! Like you ever have roast duck that is so "sauced" or "spiced" that all you taste is the flavoring? Not Fongs!! We walked by this store on our visit to Honolulu Chinatown, which generally speaking was cute but small. We got a pound of their roast pork and it was delicious. Just the right amount of fatty and meaty, I felt like our portion was generous The price was $16 for 1 pound and we were charged exactly $16. They offered tap to pay which was nice as a few stores were cash only in Chinatown. I walked down the street and 2 or 3 shops later they were selling roast pork for $13-14. I heard this is some of the best roast pork you can get. I thought it was good, but not the best I have eaten - although I admit I am not an expert on roast pork. I saw some guy on the ground putting his hands through some meat or something in a container with a lot of liquid that I will not mention - I initially got scared thinking he would serve me but fortunately a lady came hurrying in to take my order. She was awesome in the way only an experienced person could be - I asked for half a pound - that would be $8 for half pound. However I made the fatal mistake of starting to take a $10 out. She CHOPPED a chunk of meat off and started cutting and wouldn't you know it??? It was $10 worth of pork! The great thing about Fong's is the helpful staff who are more than happy to offer a tasting of their Chinese Roast Pork. It's located right on King Street at the Oahu Open Market. It's so easy to locate, just limited parking. We're still on our search to replace Nam Fong which closed 9/24/23 for an alternative to this iconic meat market. Let's get to the tasting. The Chinese Roast Pork has a crispy skin that holds up hours later at room temperature. The meat is moist, but the flavor is not as deep as Nam Fong and there is no touch of anise in the flavoring. The Char Siu is good, but I've had better. Overall, I liked Fong's, especially the service. Regarding our taste tests, of the four places we've tried thus far (Alicia's Market, Asian Mix, Lee's Meat Market & Fong's Meat Market), Asian Mix continues to lead the pack in both Chinese Roast Pork and Char Siu flavoring. read more

We were marketing in Chinatown for some items that I needed to make dinner with but took a detour to Fong's Meat Market because our fave Chinese meat roaster was closed for the day. I have read stellar reviews from trusted fellow Yelpers so it was a no-brainer for us to try them. As we approached this food stand in historic O'ahu Market's open-air public market space, I could see a female butcher behind the glass display. There was a rhythmic ping and thwack from her cleaver as she chopped another customer's order. I peered into the display case and noted the slab of crispy roast pork. My eyes danced with glee as I surveyed the slab for its even layers of fat and meat and crunchy puffed skin. I could even see trickles of clear pork juice oozing from the freshly cut side. I checked out their menu board for pricing and found that their roast pork cost was only $12 per pound (recently increased as evidenced by pasted paper tags). There was no greeting as my eyes met hers and I just asked for 1 pound of siu yuk (燒肉). The butcher snatched up the slab of pork, cut off a strip and weighed it at exactly one pound. Yep, you know she's been doing this for awhile to know the weight by feel and sight. Ping, thwack, ping, thwack, ping, ping, ping and like magic, the glistening and warm strip of roast pork was sliced and put into a nice styrofoam container. She said $12 and we paid it right away. We eagerly opened the container to steal a slice or two before walking home. The slight jiggle of the pork slice, fatty silkiness that streaked through the meat and crunchy crisp pork skin crackled across my taste buds. I wanted more but slapped my hand and my husband's to keep out of that container until we got home. If our fave hadn't been closed for the day and if we hadn't been having some disappointments, we probably wouldn't have tried Fong's Meat Market. This place was legit and we'll be back! read more

Was walking around and wanted something to nibble on. Saw roasted pork and my fave: char siu in the shop. Looked at pricing, $12/lb. Sure, why not? Ask the gentleman for one rack/rib of roasted pork and a small portion of char siu. Total $6.00 cash. Provided two toothpicks, free of charge. I really enjoyed the roasted pork; was flavorful, crispy skin and not too dry (probably because the gentleman chopped up a nice, fatty piece for us). However, the char siu was the complete opposite- a little dry... Transaction was quick; in and out within minutes. Did not see any sit down areas, so it's take out only. Parking can be difficult around here. Cash business only. They do have other roasted meats, however, it was slime picking when we arrived around 12:30pm. read more

Based on Frolic Hawaii's review of the best Chinese roast pork places in Hawaii we strolled down to O'ahu Market in Chinatown after picking up our moon cakes, char siu baos and other savory goodies fro Sing Cheong Yuan. After checking out the competition at Nam Fong, Chun's Meat Market and others in O'ahu Market we decided to take the plunge at Fong's. Shopping in O'ahu Market brought back fond memories of shopping in Chinatown with my Kung Kung and getting a free sample of char siu while my grandfather chatted up the butchers. I bought a pound each of roast pork and char siu ($13/#) and as soon as we got into the car we sampled the roast meat treasures. Char siu was lean and tasty with just the right amount of char to caramelize (sp?) the glaze. Roast pork skin was crackled to make it easy to chew the whole skin. Meat, while a tad bit fatty, was flavorful and tender. Fat in roast pork can't be helped since butchers normally use pork belly. You can't go wrong with Fong's and I'd say on a good day might even be better than Nam Fong. read more

Things are constantly changing, and it's especially to be expected after 3-4 years. Unfortunately I encountered that truth several times this trip to Hawaii, but not here. THANK you Fong's for continuing to offer the same, delicious, moist and crispy skin meat I love. We came in the morning on a Tuesday before our flight. No line and a good amount of meat on display. Ordered 1/2 lb of roast pork, 1/2 lb of char siu and even got a sample of the former as we waited for it to be chopped up; right out of the oven and piping hot. I think they may have changed the meat they use for the char siu though. It didn't have as much fat or char on the outside. The crispy roast pork skin though was amazing. We nibbled as we walked around Chinatown and had some more at the airport. Half of it managed to make it home and stick around for a few days in the fridge, but it's not the same as the day you buy it. Growing up in Chinatown with 1st generation parents from Hong Kong our family pretty much had roast pork on the table. My father had his go-to places such as Nam Fong and businesses of the past (Wing Loy, Eastern Food Center and Lee Kai Market). Today we have other places such as Char Siu House and Roast Duck Kitchen that offer roast pork. Fong's Meat Market, which is located in Oahu Market on N King St, sure has a great following of their famous Chinese-style roast pork. The skin is CONSISTENTLY crispy with a great meat-to-fat ratio. You stand in line and wait patiently for your turn as this place is quite busy. You tell the staff how much you want and you get front row seats to a large cleaver hacking a slab of roast pork belly. CHOP CHOP CHOP. The pork is placed in a styrofoam box and you have a box of pork heaven. Fong's roast pork is best eaten immediately so many times I find myself opening the box and grabbing a piece for immediate gratification. Should there be any leftovers (highly unlikely as they get gobbled up very quickly), I like to stir-fry the pork with firm tofu, garlic chives, harm ha (fermented shrimp paste) and some chili pepper for heat. Serve with hot rice.......YUMMO! They also offer other popular good eats of char siu pork and roast duck, both which I have yet to try. To be frank, when I walk up to Fong's Meat Market my eyes beeline to their roast pork - - just one look and I'm sold. For me it's pretty much a no-brainer to get roast pork because of the CONSISTENT quality. If you can brave the crowds and handle your typical Chinatown parking, make your way for Fong's Meat Market for their amazing roast pork. I've being buying Roast Pork, & Roast Duck for over 30 years from Fong" Meat Market. I'm from off Island, but one place I must go every time I visit Oahu is Fong's. 1st they need to update their prices. Last time they updated their website was 2022. So when I got there to my surprise their was a big increase in price based on what is on their website. I understand cost of doing business but they need to update their website besides their is no parking & you need to take two people (one to watch the car) Anyway I was so disappointed, the Roast Pork was so salty I couldn't eat it. I've read all the great reviews and seen all pics of Fong's roasted meats, bookmarked and it was time to finally give Fong's a try. I called to place my phone order the week before Lunar New Year, spoked to Ed. My order was for 2 roast duck and 2 lbs roast pork, pick up time between 12:30 - 1:00 pm on 2/4. Everything was confirmed so glad that I got the roasted meat taken care of for our CNY dinner. I've never heard of Fong's Meat Market until I did a search, funny how I have passed by Fong's tons of times but didn't noticed this business. Tiny little shop right in front of Oahu Market, facing North King St. side., this is where you will find Fong's Meat Market, right next to produce stall. During the day of pick up, I left work early to pick up my order, I found a metered parking near the river and walked to Fong's. I noticed they were all sold out, they had nothing left including my phone order. Ed wrote down my order but folded the paper so he had missed my order. I was so so mad, but more worried, as to how I would break the news to my mom. I did give Ed a hard time, ( sorry Ed.!) The only thing that came to my mind was to buy elsewhere, but too last minute they wouldn't have any available. While I was on the phone, Ed said he will make it and deliver the meats to my work place, as I did have to go back to work. He would deliver them by 2:30 pm. I was surprised to hear this and I had to ask twice if he is sure about delivering. Wow!! They made more roasted meats in time for delivery. When it was 2:30 pm, I didn't hear back from Ed. I thought he probably didn't stick to his word but he called at 2:35 saying that he will be late. Although he missed my order, he was so nice to make them and deliver them to me, that is awesome, 5 stars service! They were delivered hot and fresh, packed nicely in four take out boxes. Thank you Ed! I had to have a piece of roast pork at the office and OMG, the reviews are true, the roast pork was super good! Super crispy skin, tender meat, and not too salty, I loved it! Out of my orders of roast duck and roast pork, I like the roast pork more. I need to give the duck another try when I stop by, I think maybe the duck wasn't defrosted ahead of time when they made it, the meat was tough to chew. All in all, I appreciate you going out of your way to make my order and even delivering them. Great customer service right there, and you even admitted that you fold the paper and missed my order. I haven't been going to Chinatown on a regular basis until recently so today since I was in the area I thought I would check it out. I purchased a half pound of roast pork and a half pound of char siu and though the char siu was excellent I'm not sure if it's the best that I've had (if not, it was very close) but I would buy it again when I go back but the roast pork was definitely the best I've eaten. Skin was crispy and the meat was moist and tender with nice juicy fat in parts of the meat. Plus it was nice and salty ... just how I like it. Not that you should trust a vegetarian, but I had some of this roast pork and it is fucking delishioooous. OMGGGGGGGG. Definitely got some fatty bits and the skin is super crispy, what's not to like? The vendor gave us about a few dollars worth, which was plenty and provided a taste with some toothpicks instead of packing it all in the box lol. Clearly we looked hungry. I think it's better than Sing Hing, which is already good. What puts Fong's over the top is that unlike Sing Hing, we got the choice parts of the pork despite only getting a snack, whereas at Sing Hing we got a mess of chopped up scrap bits.
