Great beer but not as varied as I hoped, could use better seating but worth a visit! Lots of very funky saisons, more like what I'd expect from a gose but if your into that style definitely a winner. We stopped here on the way back from Asheville.... and I am so glad we did. This brewery is small and upcoming but does everything right! I haven't seen a start up brewery in such a great location when you pull into downtown. The space has been renovated to a historic/rustic/craft feel. It was very inviting. Quality beer, quality taste, and great selection. I enjoyed the sweet potato brew and their stout. The Nitro IPA was also impressive for my other half. While we did come on a Sunday around 12ish, we were greeted by a great guy that we ended up talking beer, sports, community, school, etc for over an hour. We enjoyed tasting several of their brews. We ended up ordering a growler to go and were very impressed to see the attention to finishing detail that they take the time to do on a regular basis. They fill growers on demand, hand write a tag and dip the cap of the full growler in wax. Have you seen a local brewery do that before? I haven't! Next time we are int he area, we will definitely stop by again. read more

FF no longer does growlers! Are you kidding me? Have had my growler filled for years. Loved this place since the beginning. Even though I don't find their offerings as groundbreaking or as balanced as they once were or agree with their distribution or festival changes. I have remained loyal. I've stood by them declaring them NC's best brewery till today; when I was denied my refill for my growler. Apparently $$$, expansion plans , awards & believing their own hype has gotten in the way of their short term memory (5yrs to be exact). Because, clearly they have forgotten those that put them where they are today. Sad, but glad it wasn't a very long ride. read more

We dropped into Fonta Flora after a great hike. This was my first visit here, and I had pretty high expectations. The venue is cozy with a front room and bar and a larger back room with a big communal table. The service was adequate, but not overly helpful. We tried a flight of beers - they were all good, but not outstanding. The cheese board offering was just a tub of pimento cheese with crackers. Overall, it was a fine experience. I'm glad we checked it out while we were there. If I lived in the area, I'm sure I would visit on a regular basis. I'm glad I didn't make the trip just for the brewery, however. read more

We had been hearing good things about Fonta Flora so when we came in town to visit family we decided to check it out. We came on a Friday evening, the place was pretty full but we found a spot by the bar. The bartenders are very friendly and knowledgable. We ordered a flight to start with mainly filled with recommendations by the bartender. All very interesting brews! The atmosphere is comfortable, hip, and non-pretentious. You can really tell they have put a lot of thought into their concept. Just the type of place Morganton needs!! I wish we had a place like this at home. Fonta Flora! Where do I start! This place has to be the most original, different, quality brewery you will ever go to. They make beers here that expound on and obliterate common beer styles. You may find a saison with spruce tips, a carrot IPA and a Russian kvass brewed with smoked pretzels all in the same flight. The thing is, everyone on of them is going to be a well thought out, phenomenal rendition on the style they are approaching. I have visited here many times but recently made a stop on our way to the mountain house from charlotte. My wife got a flight and I secured my favorite offering of theirs, a coffee IPA brewed in collaboration with Appalachian Mountain Brewing. Her flight was so wonderful, all different styles, all tasty and empty pretty quickly. The coffee IPA is named Baba Budan, I love it, the mix of bitter coffee with a nice bitter, no too tropical hop is hard to make taste right. These guys know what they are doing on this beer, it is the perfect combination of hops and coffee. Go get one! Go quickly as they are a small brewery with an ever changing tap list, I promise you will find something you have never had before and you will probably love it. read more

This place was the main reason we decided to stay the night in Morganton on our way back to Baltimore. After frequenting Scratch Brewing Company so many times while being stationed at Scott AFB, Fonta Flora was on my list of breweries to visit. I tried every beer their listed on their menu that was available to put part of a flight. All lived up to my expectations with my two favorites being Tree Sauce and Errday. I came very close to getting a growler of the latter, but after a week long road trip up and down the east coast, I was running out of space in the vehicle. Service was quick and empty glasses didn't sit at tables for very long. The taster glasses in a flight were quite substantial. I believe 5 or so ounces a piece. You're definitely getting your money's worth here. I was surprised to see live entertainment in the middle of the day, but it added to the overall ambiance for sure -- low key, country vibe. I also picked up a couple of their shirts because I liked the design (they're also super soft). The only letdown occurred when I tried to do my sticker swap and they were out, but I didn't sweat it. I'll be back in a couple months with the wife and hopefully they'll be back in stock. read more

A great craft brew pub in Morganton. The beers made in house change regularly, with a few permanent drafts. I like the regular changing beers which give a wider variety trying new things. There are a number of craft beers they make that are interesting in concept but are not a personal taste favorite. There are other beers that are some of the best types I've ever had. The service is consistently good, the owners and brewer are very involved in the community making the place inviting. The register set up they have is awkward and problematic making a 5 star rating not possible. The other negative issues, aside from the overwhelming positives, are very few. The seating is limited, and a small space for a highly regarded local brew pub making seating difficult at times. They have local food from Mountain Burrito, not a favorite of mine, but it's nice to have an option. Fonta Flora also partners with Wisteria to offer food options for sports events which are great and a lot of fun. I have enjoyed oysters while drinking oyster stout. I look forward to seeing how they grow moving forward. read more

It's small and located outside of the hub of Asheville's brewing scene, but if you like interesting beers Fonta Flora is worth the trip to Morganton! In addition to accessible standards they create unusual flavor combinations with locally sourced ingredients but this isn't just trend bandwagoning; rather than doing the bizarre just to stand out, each ingredient pairing complements the style of beer served at Fonta Flora. I recently enjoyed a beet saison, which blended the earthy sweetness of beet with the fresh, slightly funky aspects of saisons for a beer that really refreshed on an unseasonably warm day, as well as their Urban Monk stout variant with Turkish coffee and cardamom which created a revitalizing coffee taste that was smooth and rich, with the slightly floral astringency of cardamom at the finish. A carrot IPA was also available, and while I didn't get to try it my friend who did assured me it was another example of FF putting craft before hype. The space isn't the largest and can get quite loud when crowded, but it's well laid out and feels roomy even when very busy. The outdoor seating offers pleasant views, and parking is quite easy. There are several restaurants of various types within easy walking distance if you need something more substantial than the light bar snacks offered, and in general the atmosphere is laid back and enjoyable - much like the brewery itself, for the crowd it's all about the beers and not about racking up beer nerd points. If you're in the Asheville area to enjoy some of North Carolina's great beer tourism choices, make the detour to Morganton for a creative brewery that's sure to do even bigger and better things as they grow! read more

I am SO glad we made the detour here. We actually would have missed it if I hadn't been reading NYTs 36 hours in Asheville at the very moment we were passing the town of Morganton ("city??") It didn't open til 3 and i don't regret one second of time we spent waiting for that moment. If you feel like I'm being dramatic, you obviously haven't been there yet. I have been to many a craft brewery in my lifetime and I can honestly say, this place has the BEST beer I have ever had. Like, seriously. The brewer has somehow managed to do what all the other brewers want to do: balance the unique flavors of locally grown/foraged plants with beer in an incredibly successful way. My husband and I tried 11 beers in total (two flights with no overlaps, lest you think I'm writing this review totally drunk off my ass) and literally every single one made us have a somehow appropriately orgasmic reaction. I happen to like sours so Torches was my favorite. The Wolfspit was also another favorite and my husband loved all the IPAs he tried. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Thankfully both the beers I mentioned were available to take away so we will be able enjoy them upon returning home, though I don't really know how we will be able to pace ourselves until the next time we are in N.C (they do not sell out of state.) I promise you will not regret this stop. read more
