Mmmmmm....OMG! We had intentions of driving to Mocksville to try this out for months and today was the day. It was a little hard to find because a road is closed in the vicinity but we were able to find it using the Waze app. The building itself is a large steel structure which has been nicely finished on both inside and out. We arrived about 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and were immediately greeted. We were taken to a booth and there were a couple of other tables seated. Immediately, you could tell this was a family run business with multiple generations pitching in. The young man who took our drink order was friendly and efficient. They have quite a few taps on the back wall but they were not in service and therefore were only offering cans and bottles. The menu says they currently have malfunctions with their cooler. We were given time to peruse the menu but were checked in on to ensure we didn't have questions. The menu offers burgers, fries and dogs but they are all elevated. There are some very creative and special combinations which as the asterisk notates on the menu some items are unable to be changed. We decided to start with the pub bucket, which offers steak fries along with melted cheddar cheese and ranch. My wife ordered the Elvis burger which features bourbon glazed apples, peanut butter, banana chutney and cheddar cheese. I chose the Godfather which features salami, pepperoni and mozzarella, and I chose to get the creamy garlic pesto on the side. My wife went to use the restroom and on her way back she reported that it was very clean and she happened to notice their recent state inspection certificate boasted an impressive 99.5! Our appetizer arrived in a timely manner and while it looked different (we are used to restaurants serving fries with cheese melted with a side of ranch) this had the fries topped with cheese and the ranch poured on top. But let me tell you they were delicious! Lots of heavenly cheddar cheese which was perfectly melted and gooey topped with delicious ranch dressing. Our burgers arrived shortly afterwards and are wrapped up when served. We began to unwrap and they also looked delicious. My wife immediately started eating hers while my camera ate first. My wife commented that her burger was absolutely delicious and said she was a bit iffy at first on the cheddar cheese being served with the sweet toppings but was happy to report she thought it worked perfectly and she was glad she didn't alter the burger. My burger was a double and huge! Since I had asked for the aoili on the side because I am not a mayo guy and while it was very good I should have asked for some ketchup to dip my burger in. I enjoyed it alot and saved half for later. My wife had her eye on the apple ring sundae. It is Granny Smith apple rings, sliced and cored and dipped in cinnamon sugar and deep fried, topped with vanilla ice cream and cool whip and drizzled with homemade caramel sauce. She ordered the half version which includes three rings. It took a little longer for the dessert to arrive because by this time they had started to get busy with a majority of the inside tables full as well as a few outdoor tables and several to go orders. The dessert arrived and my wife was happy to report it was also delicious. So glad we finally stopped in and we already have talked about our next time. It was apparent from our time there that they have a following and it is easy to see why. We did ask about onion rings and were told they plan to bring back again in the fall. I arrived here around 5:50pm on a Sunday evening to eat with friend. It wasn't busy at all. The waitress came over shortly to take drink order. We both got waters. While looking at the menu, I saw different types of burgers and I received clarity. Chargrilled (or chargrilled angus) means that it's cooked to medium over an open flame. Smashed means that it's a skinny burger cooked well done, and seasoned with salt and pepper. Regular Angus burgers are cooked on a flat top to medium unless said otherwise. We ordered at 6pm. I got the Food Freak House with my burger chargrilled. My friend got the special burger with a side of salt and vinegar fries. The food came at 6:12pm and it was delicious! I tried some of the fries and it definitely reminded me of salt and vinegar chips lol. The vibes were chill. Initially, it was a little awkward because I felt that people were looking at me. The absolute best burger you can get around town! The worst thing about this place is that they're only open Thursday - Sunday. That's literally the only negative I can say about them. Their burgers are cooked to perfection each time, they have a variety of unique combinations on their menu. When they have donuts, oh my goodness, you HAVE to try them. I came back here to make sure my first experience wasn't just a fluke. It wasn't. This time I got the angry Carolina burger and it somehow was even better than the first time when I got the Mel. The slaw added a nice crunch, the chili wasn't overly spicy and wasn't overflowing on the burger. French fries are very thick but still were crispy on the outside. Also tried the sweet potato fries with the marshmallow dipping sauce. I was very skeptical because it sounded weird, but with all the unconventional creations they have here, they clearly have it figured out pretty good. apparently Food Freaks stopped being a truck about three years ago and it's now an actual place; it's totally a family operation with mom and dad doing the hard stuff with their children throwing in as they are able; everyone gets to help grow the family business. this place promises a lot from the time you see it in your feed until you roll up and still a little bit after that... open air bandstand away from the street complete with tables, umbrellas, and some roof to keep the wet off the amps in three of four directions. indoor seating options include high-tops, normal tops, booths, and a bar of sorts. the draft system is down but there's nothing wrong with a can o' bull city cider to occupy my taste buds between nibbles on the street corn: a regulation sized ear charred on a grill and awash in chili-lime crema with a shake of mexi-cheese and cilantro. it's just a tiny bit sweet for me (it's the citric acid in the lime does that) but all y'all like it like that so get some if there is some and add fries and maybe a burger or two... and the Godfather burger is a long time favorite and mine was absolutely ridiculous in the best edible way. the petite version was more than enough to satisfy me so I can only imagine the impact of a bigger burger. the Godfather shows up in a tin foil suit to maintain its burgery goodness and keep the mozzarella all soft and warm and stretchy :-) creamy pesto and spicey salami and pepperoni makes my heart hurt a little... but just a little ;-) so it's way past time to grab Peter's whirl-o-meter and bring it on up and give this place one or two... you'll be glad you did. read more

We love trying new places so when we saw this sit-down restaurant in MOCKSVILLE, we had to try it. First off you walk to a counter to order, no table side ordering. They have an assortment of draft microbrews. I tried the Jalapeño ale and it was ok. Not something I would order again though. They specialize in gourmet hamburgers but you also have other options like cheesesteak and chicken. Burgers are ala carte so if you want a side, you have to order it separately. They offer outdoor seating but we are inside. The place is clean and the staff was friendly. I got the "Mel" 1/4 lb burger with pimento cheese, siracha may, jalapeños and bacon jam. I also got a side of "thick cut" fries. The burger came out wrapped in paper like from a food truck. Not what I expected from a sit down restaurant. Secondly, when I unwrapped it, it was a sloppy mess. The cheese had oozed out all over the place and it made it impossible to pick up your burger without making your hands a sticky mess. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a stickler for a knife and fork for a burger but it takes away from the experience when both hands get messed up picking up your burger. The burger itself was ok. It was good, not great. The toppings were delicious but there was so much of all the toppings that is all you could taste. I couldn't taste the actually meat on the burger. The thick cut fries were more like potato planks. For my liking, they were just way too thick and it was more like eating deep fried wedges of baked potatoes. They came with garlic salt. Again, good but not great and something I wouldn't order again. The rest of my family got burgers and their thoughts were the same as mine. I had high hopes for this place after reading the reviews and review of their food truck. Price for 4 hamburgers, 2 fries and a $2 draft beer plus tip was $48+. This place was ok but not $48 ok for what we got. I wish them well and hope they are successful but I don't think we will be returning. Everything is made fresh; hand "smashed" burgers, hand cut onions for the rings, the best collards I have ever put in my face, and hand-cut apple rings, rolled in cinnamon sugar, fried, topped with ice cream, whipped cream, and house-made caramel sauce for dessert. The owner came out to speak to us after I raved to the server about the collards, and he is a real stand-up man who has a passion for what he does. Awful. We were the only people there that should have been my first clue. I got the shroom burger that was not very warm when it arrived. The bun on the bottom was soggy. The hamburger had no taste to it. The salt and vinegar fries were also tepid. Not as hot as you would expect being the only people in there. The fries were swimming in a white creamy puddle that didn't have a string vinegar taste. I went by yelp reviews that said this place was amazing.. maybe there are new owners or there maybe new cooks in the kitchen. The burgers are incredibly unique, not dry as they're cooked to medium temperature, and with the juicy burger soaking the bun it makes for a wonderful experience! I had "The Mel" which was a 1/4lb burger with jalapeño, bacon jam, sriracha mayo, and pimento cheese! It was incredible! The accompanying hand cut fries were outstanding and a bit on the thicker cut scale. Why the two stars you ask? A Hour & 5 Minute wait for my order!! Are you actually serious!! I've got the time stamped receipt to prove it! These guys were at Gypsy-Road on Friday night with 45-60 minute wait times! There were possibly 20 people waiting at any given time and the loud cheers that would erupt when Anyone would receive their order was hilarious!! Firstly - shame on the "family business" for making 2 elementary school age boys run the front of house. My jaw dropped when the 8 year old host took us to our table, and the 12 year old waiter came to take drink orders. They could barely even see over the table and made for an awkward introduction. Very well mannered and respectful boys, but extremely unprofessional and concerning from a customer point of view. This would fly at a snack bar or hot dog stand, not a bar/restaurant. Trying to manage an 8 top as an adult is tough, let alone for a child. Couldn't remember drink or food orders so ended up ordering multiple times. Maybe have them supervised by an adult to take orders!? Better summer job than working the tobacco fields I suppose. Menu is poorly worded, lacks options, and deceiving. Side of fries not included with $16 burger. Usually that kind of information is highlighted or in bold under the menu section that rule applies to, as you usually expect to receive a side with a burger at a restaurant. 1/2 a page of fine print mumbo jumbo on the back about how they don't have draft beer anymore and you will have slow service in a "rush". What you might see online is not what they have in stock. Only burgers and dogs, most food trucks or street vendors have more options. Can't eat red meat? Sorry that's all we got. 1/2 of the burger descriptions made me gag, like banana and peanut butter. Non-substitutable ingredients too, very "unique". $16 burger comes out 45-60 minutes after you order (multiple signs around dining area essentially telling you to shut up and wait, strangely passive aggressive and not warm/inviting). Burger comes on 1/2 empty tray, wrapped in tin foil and the bun is completely mush from sitting in blood and grease. Not pleasing to the eye when you open it up. They don't give you silverware but the 12 year old will bring you some if your burger is "too big" (aka mush slop mess). I got 2 patties on my big mush burger, one was well done the other rare. Baffled on how that could even happen if you put them on the grill at the same time. Drink straws are too small for the cups they give you so good thing you can just drink the burger. Best part about the wait is that you'll have no cell coverage inside nor Wi-Fi. Plenty of time to look around and contemplate what you got yourself into. Pros: Clean bathrooms (no one there to use them), good health rating (very questionable if they struggle to make their signature item - burger), fries (actually on-par with 5 Guys I was impressed, but not included with your $16 burger). I hope that every bit of those tips go to the children. The cute factor wears off when you see them running expo, bussing tables and tending to guests on a Saturday night. The adults in charge (only seen smoking cigs in the back) clearly lack competence and use them as bait for tips/free unregulated work. Younger girl was nice but not attentive, would only come after the kids checked on our table. I bussed, prepped and washed in kitchens during HS and could never imagine trying to figure out a table's food allergies or diet restrictions with a child. Avoid avoid avoid. Better quality at home with Food Lion frozen beef patties and a George Foreman grill. Better ambiance at Applebees. Better flavor and more filling meal at McDonalds. Better service and menu options at Popeyes. If you want a burger bar, go to Hopp's. Evidently Food Freaks has enough of a following that the announcement "Food Freaks; need we say more" was sufficient to generate a line. Hubs got the Food Freak House (bacon jam, cheddar, BBQ aioli) and fries. His one-bite-in reaction was "Oh! Oh! Oh you have GOT to try this." I went for the Mel (bacon jam, jalapeño pimento cheese, Sriracha chili mayo) and apple rings, although I really wanted to try the Elvis (bacon jam, bourbon apples, cheddar, pb chutney). The apple rings are to die for, a lovely crisply battered ring of tart Granny Smith in a luscious caramel drizzle. Five stars for the food, three for the interminable wait (about 45 min) made worse because the gent in the window took a number of orders and those in the masses had no way of knowing how many were ahead of them or how long it would take. read more

Let me start by saying this place is awesome. Now, let me pick some extremely minor nits. Service could be a tad bit faster but I'm not complaining because I had a chance to have another excellent beer from their beer list. Eclectic, balanced and well done beer list. Maybe a couple more Winston beers, but I found plenty to drink. My Ahi tuna melt was one of the best things I've had all year. Great wasabi slaw but I didn't taste the teriyaki aioli. My friend's Carolina Dog was great. We ordered fries but didn't garlic salt. Asked for regular salt but they apparently can't do that. A little kosher salt on those fries when they came out of the fryer would have been a home run. I gave them a triple because they were perfectly fried wedges of whole potatoes and they were outstanding. Overall, I really enjoyed Food Freaks and I will be back to try a burger. read more

I know this place has some mixed reviews but craft burgers made from high quality ingredients are going to drive the price up. We are traveling across NC on I40 and were looking for something other than fast food. We had the Cheeseburger in Paradise, Sweet Carolina and Angry Carolina which were devoured so quickly that no pics are available. Mine specifically was the Angry Carolina (angus quarter pound burger, house-made habenero-infused chili, jalapeño slaw, spicy cheddar, onions) which was tongue tingling savory and finger licking sloppy. I love spicy food, and this burger was perfect. The meat was perfectly cooked, the slaw was crunchy, sweet and spicy and the chili hearty with a slow burn from the habanero which you didn't feel until a couple of bites in. My only criticism (and it is minor) is that they should use heartier bread and toast their buns so the bread can stand up to all the delicious goodness in the burger. This did not stop me from eating every last bite I assure you. We did take out because I was traveling with 3 dogs and the whole family so we didn't get the whole experience, but the individual who took my order was friendly, helpful and answered my questions (since I was ordering on the phone from an outdated image of the menu posted by a previous diner). When my dog escaped the car when I was bringing back the order, one of the staff came out to help me round the crazy beast up! I am grateful! So I give them an A+ for service. To me, food is love and I try to eat something interesting everywhere I go. Sometimes you eat food that you will miss and maybe even dream of. That burger is on my short list of food I will dream of. My husband and I took our 4 year old granddaughter and she had a kids cheeseburger. My husband had the Oh Happy Days burger and upgraded to bleu cheese, I had the Sweet Carolina burger. Sides cost extra so we ordered the pub bucket fries to share. This was misleading as it was a french fry tray with a few of their fries with cheese and ranch. No I didn't expect a bucket but I did expect more than what we received. The kids burger did come with about 5 smaller fries. Our total was $37.00. 2 waters and one tea. This past Saturday, we headed to The Brewer's Kettle so we could check out Food Freaks. Their Pickle Dog was a tangy dill spear wrapped in pastrami and cheese sauce before being battered and deep-fried. This crispy bundle was served with a zesty chili mustard sauce perfect for dipping. Food Freaks juicy stuffed burgers are hand-pattied from fresh ground beef and grilled until they have a nice char on the outside. We started with a burger called Rhythm and Bleu that had recently been added to the Food Freaks menu. The burger was stuffed with salty feta, pungent bleu cheese, sweet bacon jam, and a spicy Sriracha mayonnaise. This was an in-your-face, stand-up-and-be-noticed burger. We paid attention! The Rhythm and Bleu was our favorite burger of the day. Next we dug into The Godfather. The Garlic Basil Pesto gave it tons of flavor. Stuffed with Italian meats and Mozzarella cheese, this was almost like two meals in one. The Wild Mexi was stuffed with chunks of chorizo sausage, large pieces of jalapeno peppers, cheese and a creamy aioli sauce. No matter how full you are, make room for the Crispy Apple Rings whenever you see this food truck. They are incredible. The sliced Granny Smith apples go into a cinnamon batter before they are deep-fried to give them a perfect crisp crust. Then they cover the apples in a homemade caramel sauce. We tracked Food Freaks down for lunch on Thursday at the Piedmont Plaza. We had a bit of a wait for our food, but it was worth it. We were expecting great things from the burgers but what surprised us was how crispy, salty and fantastic their fries were. The first burger we had for lunch that day was the Puff Mento Burger. If you aren't sure about all of the different stuffing combinations and don't know what to try, this straightforward burger is for you. Use two hands and lots of napkins to eat this pimento cheese, bacon stuffed Southern bad boy. Next we tried the Elvis. It was stuffed with apples, bacon, cheddar cheese, sweet bourbon sauce, and a banana-peanut butter chutney. This one was too sweet for us. We like to cut the sugar in peanut butter with a hot pepper topping but don't let that deter you from giving it a try. Our last Food Freaks burger was The Shroom Burger. The juicy patty was loaded with mushrooms, red peppers and a wicked amount of Swiss cheese. The unique stuffed burgers and Crispy Apple Rings from Food Freaks blew us away. Oh my gosh-- this food truck! WOW! I was lucky enough to find Food Freaks at the new Foothills Tasting Room over the weekend. There were three of us hanging out and we all decided to try a different burger, so between us we had the Godfather (mine), the Mel, and the Elvis. The Godfather was recommended by the chef as one of his favorites, so I knew I had made a good decision. SO delicious! The burger was tender and juicy. The Godfather is filled with Italian sandwich meats-- pepperoni and salami, perhaps? The cheese and fancy mayo spread balance everything out perfectly. Quite possibly one of the best burgers I have ever had! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Between the three of us, we also split the fry basket and an order of the apple rings. Both were just, like WHOAH. The fries were covered with chili, cheese, and a delicious sauce that I wish I could put on basically everything for the rest of my life. The fries are thick cut and perfectly cooked. I think thick cut is a good call since it has to support all those delicious toppings and condiments. And the apple rings... SO delicious! Fried perfectly crispy, with a nice caramel-type sauce on them. What a delicious dessert! No matter how full you are, save room for the apples. Totally worth it! Overall, this food truck was amazing! The food was absolutely incredible and the service was pretty fast. The chef was super friendly and even came over before packing up to leave to make sure that we didn't want to order anything else. Let me start with the positives. The food was delicious. My husband had a mushroom burger, I had the food freak house burger (I think that was the name) kids had a hotdog and grilled cheese. We split an order of pub fries and salt and vinegar fries. I'm pretty sure everything is cooked to order, and every bite was just scrumptious. The wait was long. There weren't that many other customers, so I'm not sure why it took such a long time. The service was lacking. You are not allowed to add lettuce, tomato or pickles to your burger, and that seemed strange. Although my burger was excellent without it, I don't like someone telling me that I can't have what I want, especially when I'm paying for it. It's seems controlling and unnecessary. They don't have a kids menu. The server told us what they offered kids, but I didn't think to ask the prices, so that's on me. I think the kids options were hotdog, grilled cheese and cheese burger. All sides are separate, no meal combos. We ended up spending over $50. That's a lot for us to eat at a burger joint. I think it's geared more toward younger, kid-free folks, and that's ok...but we would not have taken our kids here had we known ahead of time. Their customer service was excellent and above and beyond when I called in my first take out order from them. Once I arrived, the customer service was even better! My burger was cooked the way I asked and the taste was delicious! Next time, I will eat in. This place is amazing. This Mocksville restaurant off of I-40 is one of the best burger places I have been to. Had The Godfather burger followed by an Applerito (a cross between a cinnamon roll and apple pie). I highly recommend the sweat potato fries with marshmallow dressing. As far as ambience, don't expect fine dining. But if you want a comfortable, family friendly place to enjoy a good meal, this is for you. read more
