Foodstuffs is a great and interesting lunch option in Lake Forest. All of their offerings are very fresh and high quality, including their bakery items (look closely in the display case for potential bargains!) Starting with the salads...for around $12...you pick from an excellent selection of fresh ingredients and they toss it up. You can have them chop it as well. Their dressings are custom made and the ginger dressing, in particular, is delightful. The sandwiches...also about $12...are large and also made to order. (If you order a Panini expect a wait of around 15 minutes.) Their bakery goods are to die for! Yes, you could run around the corner to Gerhards but you'll pay much less here at Foodstuffs for a larger, better dessert (and maybe even fresher). It's not all perfect, however. We recently took home one of their frozen Shepards Pies and while the crust was great and it had plenty of meat filling there was way, way too much salt in the recipe. Also, I've had soup here a few times and it was good, but not great. As an aside, the service here is definitely courteous but can be slightly standoffish at times so don't expect the kind of super friendly service you may experience elsewhere in Lake Forest. read more

foodstuffs is a mainstay in lake forest, glencoe, evanston. my fav location is glencoe because their fish dept., with david at the helm has fantastic fresh seafood as well as amazing prepared selections. one of our favorites is the scottish salmon, as well as tilapia and the chili lime grilled shrimp. so.good. but it doesn't end there: they also have an amazing salad bar as well as a sandwich bar, ehich is always fresh and busy taking orders. a great variety of soups are also made daily and can also be found frozen. at the glencoe location, a nice selection of wines for ravinia and their desserts are wonderful. the daily selections of prepared foods change daily and is a great way to pickup dinner on the go. one of my favorite specialty food stores on the north shore. read more

It's been a while since we've been to Foodstuffs but the lunch crowd is as crazy as ever. The chopped salad chefs were whirring around and the sandwich gurus were rushing behind the counter. My husband was smart enough to order online and prepay. It should have been an easy in and out. Instead, I had to wait 10-15 minutes in the cashier line just to pick up what I had already paid for. Instead, I'm stuck waiting behind folks who said they ordered their food 5 minutes ago online and why wasn't it ready yet? Entitled much? Hey - have an option for folks who prepay to just grab and go. Also, I ordered an old favorite which I haven't had in a while- the Californian - as a treat. Bodega-Deli? The place is very spacious with outdoor seating. You can get fresh salad, sandwiches, wraps and soup. There's also a refrigerator for refrigerated meals to pick up. I went here to grab lunch and it was pretty busy. I got the tuna wrap and very large. Tasty and not messy to eat. I love they also have a bakery to get something sweet to eat. I go here for my salads from the salad bar. You can pick off the menu or just build your own. Friendly people and the food is always fresh. I'd always prefer organic but that's impossible on the North Shore so happy with fresh! Sandwiches are overfilled for my personal taste but I know most people don't mind that! I'd rather have more salad and less protein in a sandwich so I end up taking a lot of the filling out. Ready made food to heat at home always have great choices. This isn't 'value' but not to have to cook every now and again is great and happily take this over a take away. The freezer is full of pies and soups. Delicious! This is the cutest little market with sandwiches, salads, desserts, breads, soups, and drinks! It was a cold day when my family and I went there, so we all got paninis. We got the V.P. Panini, the Al Capone panini, the Lake Forest panini, and a seasonal Turkey Cranberry panini. I would recommend any of them. However the V.P is very cheesy, you've been warned. We also got the rice pudding, pumpkin cheesecake, and key lime cake. The rice pudding was my favorite and the pumpkin cheesecake was pretty good too. The key lime cake didn't have much key lime flavor, it just tasted like a vanilla cake with a tiny bit of lime juice. read more

#1. Foodstuffs is amazing. That's all you need to know. I've been here a couple of times and have tried a variety of items. All the ingredients that go into their sandwiches and salads are very fresh and delicious. A personal recommendation is the V.P. panini which is amazing, especially topped with their homemade pesto and grilled balsamic mushrooms. I also love how they have so many toppings to choose from if you build your own salad plus a variety of dressings and vinaigrettes. Foodstuffs is dangerous if you like little desserts. The entire store is filled with so many goodies that it's hard to resist buying some. The macarons are catered from Bon Macaron which was started in Chicago last year. They handcraft macarons only for delivery to Foodstuffs, Sunset Foods in Highland Park and for gift boxes that you can order from their website. Sadly, they do not have an actual location yet but I would highly recommend coming to Foodstuffs for the macarons. They may be the best macarons I have had. It's so hard to pick a flavor but the salted caramel and citron (lemon-lime) are my personal favorites thus far. The texture, consistency, and filling of these macarons are absolutely perfect, not to mention that they are also constructed beautifully. Other yummy desserts include the lemon bar and the black and white chocolate squares (for people who like coconut). I was debating between 4 and 5 stars only because everything is fairly pricy but I can't hold back because in the end, the food trumps all. If I wasn't living off of a student's non-existent (or rather, negative) salary, I'd be stopping by all the time! read more

I always wander in here hoping to find something I like. Last time I went home with a two soups that were so disappointing. There were ingredients in the soup that I didn't see at first glance but when I got home and discovered them, I no longer wanted the soup. Thought I had picked vegetarian soups but was not the case. Terry's Chicken Salad is absolutely tasteless. I do buy it though because it's nice big chunks and it's a good plain base to season it yourself. The salad bar is FABULOUS! There are so many options, including unlimited vegetable options. One of the included options is avocado and they give you half of an avocado! It's wonderful for avocado lovers like myself. The downside is it is a little pricey. To add meat it is an additional cost, however for the quantity and quality of the salad I believe it is definitely worth it and it keeps you full for a long time! The staff is also very polite and friendly, as well as fast and efficient! There is some indoor seating and lots of outdoor seating which is great for the summer. So we have been going to this Foodstuffs forever but today we had what can only be classified as a "weird" experience I never post to Yelp - but this was such a strange experience I felt a need to share My wife ordered a salad and I wanted to order a Panini sandwich. When I went to order my Panini sandwich, the person making my order let me know that they were out of Panini bread. I then asked if I could get my sandwich on French bread since that was one of the other bread choices listed. She proceeded to tell me the only bread they had available was wheat bread. While I was annoyed by this, I realize sometimes these things happen - restaurants get busy and sometimes run out of items However, my wife ordered a made to order salad. One of the items on display were sesame sticks - when she asked for some sesame sticks in her salad she was told she could not have any as the ones on display were for "display only"?? My wife also wanted soup - and there were 6 soups listed as available with signs in front of the soup containers. When my wife opened the one she wanted - vegetable - she found the remnants of a few vegetables at the bottom of the container. She asked the person working making sandwiches to bring out more soups and got a strange look before being told they were out of that soup Why show things on their salad bar display that are not available and for "display only?" Why not just take them off display until they are available? Why not take the unavailable soup sign away? Just a very strange experience while buying a not so inexpensive lunch read more

Love, love, love, love. If I could afford to eat lunch here everyday, I would without hesitation. I dream of their salads. I crave their salads. One time, upon arriving back at work, I dropped my salad in the parking lot and actually considered scooping it back into the bowl and eating it anyway (don't worry - I didn't do it). The ingredients are fresh, the servers are generous, and I don't have to feel guilty when I leave. The place is always busy and crowded so finding seating can be a challenge. Summer makes it easier with outdoor seating on the sidewalk. There are typically a few samples available throughout the store to nibble on while waiting for your sandwich or salad to be prepared. Came here to pick up some stuff for game day Sunday with the ladies. Compared to the Glencoe location this one just doesn't cut it. The sandwich bar is small and every time I order a sandwich here they are out of something. Very disappointing. The selection of prepared food items is also much smaller here than Glencoe and even what they have is less appealing. I purchased some of the dips. I think that the spinach and artichoke dip wasn't the freshest. I would be leery to purchase it from here again. On the upside the caramel brownie bites were delicious! read more

Have had several experiences here and have to offer better than meh because the cookies and pastries are delicious. The sandwiches, a "Big Daddy" and a "Turkey Cobbler" tempted the palate but failed to stimulate it. Soggy bread, tasteless deli meats, too much lettuce, and a halfhearted effort to spice up the "Daddy" with a pasty tomato spread. The chicken salad on flatbread is tasty but no better than average. I had an interesting experience my first time here today. The staff is very attentive the second you walk up to any of the counters but if you need a minute to decide then they are gone. Ironically enough, the manager/owner noticed I struggled to make eye contact with a staff member and came over and talked to the employee in front of me. An overall awkward experience! I could not be more impressed with how they handled my order for Christmas dinner. I placed the order over the phone. Arrived Christmas Eve morning and gave them my name and they went to grab my order and soon after rolled it out on a cart. Went through my order in detail to make sure It was correct and provided me with reheating instructions all easily typed onto one sheet. They have this down to a science. Everyone loved all the food and it made it so easy for me to enjoy myself without any hassle. To top it off 2 days later I received a phone call to ask how I enjoy everything. WHO DOES THAT?? Well apparently foodstuffs does and I was even more impressed. I would recommend them for any of your catering needs. I'm seriously struggling trying to come up with a star rating for Foodstuffs, and I'm starting to realize why: Foodstuffs is exactly the kind of place that you really, really want to like. It's absolutely crammed to the gills with all kinds of interesting little gourmet products. You can get probably thirty different gourmet deli sandwiches and several soups, you can design your own salads, you can even get custom cakes, for crying out loud. But the real drawback to Foodstuffs is that it's so freaking expensive. That gourmet roast beef sandwich on dark rye with the chive cream cheese and who knows what else will run you 9 BUCKS (and surprisingly, doesn't have a lot of taste for all the great ingredients). That cute little one-inch-cube of marshmallow krispy in the pretty packaging costs 2 bucks. It's also crammed with people during lunch, and the process of getting a sandwich made and paying can take you 20 minutes during the noon rush hour. If you're going to a cocktail party or a housewarming or something and you want to pick up some nice little gifts, this is a great place to go. Just do it during off-peak hours. Since all I'm looking for is a good sandwich during lunch, I can't wait for the new Jimmy John's to open on Waukegan. read more

We've been in Lake Forest for two years now and I just recently found the time to stop in here and eat and shop around to see what's on offer. My first time in I had a day to myself so I picked up a book at the nearby library and set up to have a coffee and a lemon square at Foodstuffs. Delish! I also sampled all of the free offerings around the store and found some new "favorites". After awhile I went back in to order lunch! I stayed on their outside patio for about 3 hours - reading and eating. I can honestly say that I've never done that anywhere else before. I had to make myself go home for fear that I'd stay for dinner! Then last weekend we were going to Ravinia and taking my parents along for their first ever Ravinia experience. I usually do my own picnic set-up but thought we'd try a set-up from Foodstuffs to save time and stress and have something different. The entire experience was fantastic, to say the least. I went in the day before to order. The owner was friendly and helpful, even offering to make the VIP meal with only 24 hours notice (usually 48 hours) if I ordered before leaving the store. I went with a variety of to-go sandwich plates: chicken breast of the day, tuna salad, pomodoro and mini-sandwich selection. Pick-up was easy-breezy and service with a smile. Plus, we were all impressed with our meals and the quantity that was included. The "mini-sandwiches" were full sized in our opinion and there were two! The sandwiches were all tasty, the cookies were delicious and fresh, the side salads were fabulous and everything was wrapped in their own containers with bright green ribbons, like gifts. We had enough leftover to eat the next day for lunch - what a deal! I will definitely use them again for picnic take-out as well as for fun dips and spreads, salads, breads, side dishes, catering...you get the point. I will find a reason! Love them!! read more

If you haven't been to a Foodstuffs (local chain of gourmet-ish stores with lots of prepared food) you should walk into one. Baked goods are incredible, even the breads are excellent. As usual, you pay for quality. Some of the products are costlier than bakeries at comparable quality. So I dinged a star. Doesn't stop me from going into one. This is a very nice deli and bakery in downtown Lake Forrest. They have an extensive menu and they will make salads,sandwiches and wraps to order. I had the buffalo chicken wrap which consisted of a tortilla, lettuce , blu cheese and buffalo sauce. It was basically the side of those really large burnt tops you can order at a Mexican restaurant. While it was very tasty I felt paying 9.99 for it was a bit much, especially since it did not come with any sides. I also enjoyed a Nutella brownie from the bakery case. It was absolutely decadent. It was a fudge type brownie not cake like. The entire establishment was very clean and the employees were very helpful. We barely waited in line at all which is great since they are freshly preparing each order. They also had several self serve hot soups for purchase in three different bowl sizes. I do like Foodstuffs, but I think it's a little pricey. ($4 for pb&j, no thank you) There's a sandwich station, salad station, usually about 5 soups to choose from, and lots of snacks, cookies, baked goods. I love the salad station because you can put whatever you want in it and there is a lot to choose from - they weigh it to price it... It's $7.99/lb but an extra $2.75 for tuna or chicken salad and $1.75 for some meat on it. The build your own sandwich is also $7.99, but I never tried it. They really need to make this place bigger, or have more people during peak eating hours because there can be a long wait. There are a few small tables, but I usually take my food to go. read more

I LOVE FOODSTUFFS! I discovered Foodstuffs last summer and have been addicted to it ever since. If you've ever been to a Dean and Deluca, I like to think of it as a mini version of it. I love the VIP panini, Chicken Sundance and their brownies!! But everything here is really great. If you like their gourmet sandwiches you have to get a sandwich punchcard because after 12 sandwiches you get one for FREE! The sandwiches, soups, prepared foods and desserts are great, but be prepared to empty your wallet for a trip to Foodstuffs. You're paying for high quality food, and usually decent portions, but the prices are sometimes a bit high for what you get. They've recently changed there sandwich punch card 'rules' and where one could once get two punches for one sandwich, that's no longer the case, amongst other piece hikes and changes in store. The food is never lacking in taste, but where sometimes the staff can be a bit ride or stiff, they could stand to make a few changes. read more
