Foodtown has a wider and better quality selection than the Keyfood not too far away, and better prices than SS Natural on Austin, so as far as neighborhood grocery shopping goes, they're the better choice IMO. Register workers are generally very nice which makes for a good experience. Where they bug me is something I admit is nitpicky but it does get to me; I think it's great they employee so many people (their staff seems pretty large compared to other similarly sized stores), but they are constantly in the way stocking shelves (that aren't empty anyway?) or on ladders doing who knows what. It's just weird as a customer to feel like I'm the one in their way while I grocery shop. Don't most supermarkets do that kind of work first or last thing in the day? The area has a fair amount of elderly people who use walkers and canes, so I do notice they have to awkwardly navigate around the workers and their equipment while holding shopping baskets. Not enough of a dealbreaker to shop elsewhere, but just a pet peeve. read more

Is it just an old wives tale that suggests that a delayed grand opening prevents a business from reaching its full potential? If so, Orchard Fine Foods just may reap the same fate as the other stores that previously occupied the same plot of real estate. Seven months would qualify as a late grand opening, but I'm not one to subscribe to such theories and tales. Balderdash and iskabibble to that. A three star rating is a half of a star below what my first experience revealed. Produce was perky and well presented, prices followed suit with low cost offerings. Mexican avocados at .99 each is quite good as the California avocados are nit to my liking. Plumbs, peppers, pineapple all were in my cart once I preformed my shake, knock, smell rituals. For those into strawberries, the Michigan area suffered floods and created massive shortages, driving the price pet pound upwards of $5.99, yet they held strong at Orchard at $1.99. As I try to avoid buying items packaged in boxes and bags, the meat/chicken section becomes more frequent a stop for my shopping needs, I found the selection rather thin and seafood thinner. Here I am giving this place another try since my coworkers always rave about the deli people here but NEVER AGAIN. So I ordered a chicken cutlet with cheese/lettuce/tomato/mustard/mayo on a Portuguese roll at 605PM. Seen this kid with a black hoodie walking back and forth to look for cheese. Then mustard. And then mayo from the aisle. All of the sudden he asked for another piece of bread so I give him the piece of bread. A minute later he came out to get another piece of bread himself and tells me "the bread keeps breaking". Like seriously? It's 630ish and I'm finally out of the supermarket to see the saddest sandwich ever made. Picture is attached to this review so you can see it yourself. Three really big issues: 1) Openly Bigoted Manager on Duty: I bought a box of Matzah and was (twice) offered a free ham without an option for a turkey or something else that doesn't violate Jewish (or Muslim) dietary laws. When I told a man identifying himself as the manager on duty, he told me that Jews "aren't the only religion out there. There are other religions, too." When I told him they could simply offer a non-pork option alongside ham to accommodate those who are are holding a Passover Seder or those an Iftar during Ramadan, both of which overlap with Easter, as well as those who don't eat pork for other reasons, he shook his head an expressed skepticism. This implies that those who do not eat pork, whether it be religious, ideological, cultural, health, or some other reason, are not welcome to this year's Spring Holiday awards. Mind you that this store is in a neighborhood with a large Jewish population. 2) Rude Cashiers with Lackluster Social Skills: One tried talking about me behind my back and then denied it when I called her on it. Multiple cashiers during the pandemic snapped at me when I asked them to wear masks. The cashiers have spoken to me in the tone people usually talk to their dogs in. A complete lack of people skills and interest. 3) Spoiled Food: There have been times that I noticed them stocking yogurts and vegetable packs that are past their expiration date. I just want to say up front that the service is great here and the cashiers are some of the friendliest that I have personally met. The store is very clean. That being said, the veggies are sometimes horrendous! Today I had to pick through about 30 lemons to find 3 decent ones. The lettuce was so bad I could not even buy it. The red lettuce, green lettuce and romaine lettuce. None of it was good. The leaves were brownish and wilted. I would have to tear off too many leaves to use it. I checked the organic lettuce and that was just as bad as the non-organic lettuce. The same with the cucumbers. I'm not saying any neighborhood should put up with this, but you certainly would not expect this in Forest Hills, NY. Fortunately, there are many other stores and veggie stands nearby that patrons do not have to settle for this, but this supermarket should be ashamed of itself!! I cannot imagine what their veggie department may be like in low income neighborhoods if it's like this in Forest Hills. Beware and pay attention or just stay away! Be prepared for rude and incompetent management. Sale prices are not always automatically deducted at the register! I returned for a correction and was given a hard time and received a bad attitude from the manager. The manager would not even refund the full amount I was owed claiming sales tax needed to be deducted from the refund. I was therefore charged "tax" twice for the same item. Of all the supermarkets in this area, this Foodtown probably has the best selection of produce and meats with decent prices. But that's not saying a lot because there's like one sad keyfood around the neighborhood. My biggest peeve is that things always ring up incorrectly. You have to really be vigilant of everything they are scanning and be ready to ask them to go check the tag or the circular. The employees are very nice and will always correct it for you. I don't patronize Orchard at Forest Hills too often, but whenever I do go I would notice an item on my receipt that doesn't belong to me. It happened again today, a bottle of Poland Spring water appeared in the middle of my receipt. It wasn't on the conveyer belt or packed in my shopping bag. I think the cashier scanned the bottle she was drinking and charged it to me. I feel the employees is not alway honest or are very very careless at this store. I called to notified them of this and received no satisfaction, so I filed a compliant on Foodtown's website. I also feel targeted, this happens too often to be a coincidence. Of course, I am not going out in the middle of a Pandemic for a refund. I can overlook mistakes, but DISHONESTY is not forgivable. if you have a choice DO NOT patronize this store, and if you do go, buy only a few items so you can quickly check the tally on the monitor. They've really made an effort to provide fresher ingredients. Their produce and meats look fresh & have tried their cold cuts too. Everything so far has been tasty. They even carry generic brands as well as specialty items. They've renovated since their predecessors so everything looks new. It's definitely worth trying. read more

A wonderful shopping experience. The store is clean, well-managed and the prices are good. David, the manager, is friendly, helpful and will stock items upon request. The entire staff is friendly, especially the cashier, Jennifer and always greets each customer in a cheery manner. The store is only limited by its size. I wish it were larger, but we New Yorkers have to do with the limited space and price of real estate. That said, I am pretty much able to get most of my shopping there before going back home and crossing the Boulevard du Mort (Queens Boulevard). There's a manager there (white, short, fat) who has "small-penis" syndrome. I frequent often to stock up on pantry items. So this week's circular I noticed they had oatmeal on sale for $2.99. In the circular, it stated (in the fine print), the sale was valid for "quick oats" AND the "old-fashioned oats" variety. (PLUS it was the only two types the store brand carries) I picked up the old-fashioned oats and it rang up $3.19. 20 cents is no big deal, but since this is not the first time an item was incorrectly rang up, I decided to hold them to it. After I brought this mistake to the cashier's and stock boy's attention, they were about to do the price correction for me until this manager came up to dispute the correction. He "approved" the price correction after he was showed the circular but without saying "This is the whole grain version but I'll still give it to you". This incident happened on 11/11/2014 @ 7:00pm. IDIOT, all types of oatmeal ARE considered WHOLE GRAINS. He made that remark just to feel like he's doing me a favor and to intimidate a woman. There's a reason why this supermarket was re-branded 3+ times since I moved to this neighborhood. There are numerous other supermarkets in the neighborhood, I'm taking my business elsewhere, you just lost another customer. read more

Ok, so here's the update--after going there for the third--and probably--last time--last week. Someone obviously told management what sauerkraut is. They now have packages of Boar's Head. I bought one. Maybe the chicken was still there from the week before...it was starting to get a little yellow-brown. I bought one, instead of two, that still looked good. The bananas were great, the grapes not; they were what appeared to be nice large grapes in the already closed-up container. When I got home I found that the larger ones surrounded little ones...really, really little tiny ones. At least the other markets mix them up. I got gypped here. And annoyed. I bought the rest of my fruit and vegetables, as well as other things, at the Natural--see below about just getting disgusted and wanting to get finished and out of that godawful FREEZING store. The bacon: Not just overpriced as it is at all the other supermarkets within a 10-or-so-block radius, but yet a dollar *more* than all the others. They can keep their $8 bacon. They even wanted too much for the Boar's Head, for which everyone else charges less. I bought mine--Oscar Meyer--at Key Food on 71st. Since I was there previously, they'd raised the prices for just about everything I wanted. Homie don't play dat. Homie shop elsewhere. There were about three or four shelves of different types of the same single brand of granola bars. You know, that's just stupid. I didn't want any made by that brand and bought mine somewhere else. Don't even think of going there for anything Entenmann's because they have about ten boxes of stuff, on a table, and it's the brand's least desirable cakes and doughnuts--the kind you find in Walgreens or Rite Aid and discounted. They do have a nice little selection of cakes, cupcakes, brownies, etc., from other vendors, which are not only preferable, but much, much better than Entenmann's anyway. There weren't more than about 10 or 15 loaves of bread in that whole aisle, and that's just weird. And there were few packages of Thomas's English Muffins; really odd because they were on sale and the delivery guy always leaves lots of stuff when there's a sale. The couple other packages of Thomas's products were mediocre, unimaginative, and undesirable--basically the only other option was cinnamon raisin, ugh. All three Key Foods have banana and pumpkin spice at this time, and also corn. Same with the bagels. This place? Ziiiiippppppp. I bought mine at the Natural along with some cinnamon swirl bread. Nope, Orchard had n.o.n.e. of this stuff. I bought other things at the Natural, too. This was the second time I was given the wrong brand of baloney at the deli counter (bologna for those of you who haven't made it into the 21st century). Believe me, I speak c.l.e.a.r.l.y. If you don't have Boar's Head, tell me. Don't send me home with a surprise. They have a lot of specialty food and food-type stuff. There was a sauce I wanted, but not desperately enough to pay $8 for it. Good to know, though; should I ever find myself in great need of quinoa, I know I can get it there. I *liked* the unusual things...but I won't buy them there, everyone else has better prices. I may mull over the couple things I saw that I might buy, but if I were Orchard management I wouldn't hold my breath over it. Three out of three cashiers are bit*chy. Oh, wait, four--there was also the one who snarled at me and tilted her head, saying "She's open!" Don't know why they're like that; for my money I like to go where the people who work somewhere at least look, hmmm...congenial if not happy as a pig in sh*t to ring you up. They're very unpleasant and annoyed that you have the nerve to bother them by wanting to pay for your food. I didn't even get everything I intended to get there. Before I went to pay I stopped to look over my list and saw several things I'd forgotten, but...I was too annoyed by then--by the prices, the crappy stock, the no signs telling you what's down the aisles, and freaking f-f-f-freezing because it was 32 degrees outside that day and walking in and around the store there was no difference whatsoever in the temperature outdoors or in. It's getting cold now. I'm not going to Orchard again just to freeze my a$$ off this winter. Overall I spent $97 and change at Orchard. Then I looked over the things I bought when I got home and wondered where the heck all the food was for the nearly $100 I spent. Not in my house, that's for sure. Yes, I certainly *do* know what gets what for how much money these days. Orchard fell enough short to warrant my not spending any more there. This week: Key Food. They have almost everything a person might want; only the refrigerated and freezer aisles are cold; and the prices are better. And hey, the cashiers are nice, too. I came here for the first time yesterday because a neighbor of mine had mentioned that he liked shopping here. Usually, I go to Trader Joes but since that isn't walking distance from me, I occasionally go to the more local supermarkets by me such as Natural and Key Food. Well yesterday I tried this Orchard place. I liked the nice lighting they had throughout most of the supermarket (although I noticed some isles with fluorescent lighting - ew, disgusting). The flooring was nice in the front of the market; the veggies section looked very fresh and appealing; I noticed quite a large meat selection and by a quick glance at the colors, I thought they looked fairly good. I only needed cheese and tomato paste so I didn't get to test their meat or fresh produce this time. However, I prefer this market to Key Food on Queens Blvd, so I think I'll start coming here when I need a quick grocery run. I still love Natural though. And Nothing, NOTHING beats Trader Joes for me. Not in Forest Hills at least. read more

I never thought I would review a supermarket but I just had to when it came to this one! The staff is very friendly and very helpful! Here are some of the reasons why they are my favorite in the neighborhood 1. They deliver your groceries 2. If you don't have the time or your too lazy to leave your house you can call, order your groceries and get them delivered same day! 3. Staff is super friendly 4. Fruits are always fresh and great prices 5. If you don't find something, ask them if they can order it. They usually do There's so much more! They're very organized and very helpful always The one reason why I love them and appreciate everything they do is because they donated cases of water and gave us a discount on cases of OJ for our school's graduation. They always want to give back to the community. For that reason alone I gave them 5 stars! read more

They allowed customers into the store without masks and when I said something to the manager he ignored me and lied and said everyone was wearing a mask. I love this store! I go here all the time for groceries. This is a relatively small market, but it is packed with produce that is often hard to find in other stores. Going to Orchard makes me happy. The prices are right, the management and employees of the store are friendly, and the food is great. Literally I view this market as a perk of living in Forest Hills. read more

Hello again,. Thanksgiving 2017 and Christmas 2017, thank you David the store manager for donating two turkeys and a ham to people who were in deep need in this NYC. The report is they were greatly blessed and helped make their holiday bright and warm. I saw with my own eyes the smiles that developed on their faces. And one grabbed me in a hug and wept on my left shoulder for the free turkey she was given. This place has improved in leaps and bounds over the various iterations (remember the Trade Fair? ugh). The selection is generally good and fresh, but can be unpredictable and sometimes inexplicably missing a key item, like a whole shelf of Goya but no black beans. They now stock a wide variety of beersThe seafood selection is sparse and priced way above the other grocery stores in walking distance. They seem to have an inordinate number of circular "misprints." The thing that really keeps this place from shining is the management. The manager who is a sort of short stout Caucasian guy is terribly rude. We have purchased items from them on a couple of times that, for whatever reason, are spoiled or of poor quality. When we've try to return or exchange them, they call out this jerk who berates customers for "losing him money." Not as much money as they lose when I just walk a couple of blocks to one of the other half-dozen stores in close distance! So we're glad that awful pit of health code violations has been cleaned up, but they have a way to go yet to be real competition in the Forest Hills grocery wars. read more

Every time I go here, they charge different prices than what's on the sign. Sometimes I catch it when I'm in the store and the staff gets nasty when I ask for the correction. Most of the time, I don't realize it until I get home since I'm unpacking the cart and not able to watch every price. Tonight Friday February 8th 2019 I went shopping to make dinner and chicken soup. I wanted to make fried chicken tenders, so feeling a bit lazy I went and got three packages of chicken tenders. I could have bought chicken breast and cut it up but i was feeling lazy! know I didn't look at the date sold by.... it was Feb 10th.... OK cutting close butt it should still b good! It was $12.75 total for the tenders.... I also bought chicken quarters two packs.... for i intended to use for the chicken soup. it had a sell by date of Feb 14th.. (it by the way was fine) ok so i live near BareBurger, not far.... got home opened took tenders out of the stores plastic bag chicken still in the sealed plastic and there was an oder!!! open it and more oder.... walked back to store asked told them and said i would just get some chicken breasts... the floor manger was like ok.... went to get said item and pay the difference... but for some reason the the floor manager went upstairs were the office is.... came back down started to ring me up and from the office I hear David the owner / store manger say "who has a problem with chicken" well everyone looks up and the floor manger said "me". So David says only you this happens to (having spoiled chicken" he comes down to the register and accuses me that this MY FAULT. "saying your refrigerator must be broken" I was like David it never made it to my frig... I just bought it!!! he didn't want to hear it... I mean you could clearly "smell" it was bad... and he continued to be like you are costing me money!!! I was like David, He told the manger to refund my money and not to sell me any more meat to me ever... What are you talking about... I have been coming to this store forever... You can shop here but i will not sell you anymore meat.... !!!! OK for full disclosure this has happened twice before.... smell of high heaven, what I am to eat rancid meat???? and somehow it is my fault it is rancid??? There were four items that we wanted to buy which had the price clearly displayed. When we went to pay, the cashier rang them up and the price came out as displayed. She bagged the items and gave them to us, and said that there must be a mistake because the items can't be that price. I said, the price is as displayed so that's why I'm buying it. She then proceeded to void these four items, after my credit card went through. How can a store list a price on an item, let it scan through correctly, and then tell the customer that it's the wrong price? Is this how you do business? read more

IF YOU LIKE BUYING OVERPRICED, MOSTLY EXPIRED FOOD, WHILST DEALING WITH DISRESPECTFUL IDIOTS THAN THIS IS THE MARKET FOR YOU!!! Went in to Orchard 12/1/14 at around 5:00pm to buy some salmon salad, hale and hearty soup etc. I go to checkout, a guy comes in off the street bumps into me while cutting in front of me.The Store manager tells the cashier to take him first, and proceeds to talk to him in what sounds like Russian or Uzbek and it's clear they know one another. Once he leaves the cashier apologies and says "I'm sorry, I know that you were here first, but my manager told me to take him first" FAST FORWARD : I get home check the receipt, the girl charged me for 1 sushi, twice & The Salmon salad was so oily (deli) that it leaked all over everything else, even on the fabric bag I brought with me! (Because it wasn't wrapped or even bagged properly) So when I took the fish oil drenched plastic container of Soup out of the bag, it dropped (I couldn't get a grip on it from all the grease) and broke in pieces. I come here very frequently. It's a great grocery store for quickly getting items for dinner and various other things. Not a huge selection but usually has everything you would need. The staff is usually pretty helpful. The meat/protein has been hit or miss lately though, so I'm hoping the consitency of quality improves. Will continue coming here all the time! read more
