When I saw a post on social media about Fooki having a new, revised menu, and the introduction of a new dish, called LU ROU FAN, I made a note to come back! The previous visit was such a disaster and really went far, far away from Taiwanese flavors and preparation. This time around, the food was spot on. The correct flavors were there and the preparation was much better. Also had the opportunity to have met the new owners who were super friendly, courteous, and pleasant to talk to. The inside definitely looks better and feels more comfortable with the addition of the hanging lanterns and Chinese red paper on the wall. Yes, had to get the Lu Rou Fan. This was spot on, and the best one I've had in Hawaii. The portion was very generous. It was really a nice balance of flavors with the soy, spices, and especially the rock sugar. Other places either use regular sugar, brown sugar, not enough, or none at all. Rock sugar is an important component, and gives it a depth of flavor. I can eat this everyday! The COW WOW Braised Beef Noodle soup was excellent. My first experience, the meat on the rib was SUPER tough, and had to take home to boil for an hour. Luckily, this time, the meat on the rib was literally fall off the bone tender, and flavorful. The tendon were larger pieces and quite tender as well. The same for the beef shank. All generous portions. The noodles had the right amount of chewiness. The broth was hearty and delicious. The spices and 20+ ingredients really came through as I could taste the star anise, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, and etc. The Boom Boom Chicken was very good. Previously, the chicken was in huge pieces and dry/bland. This time the chicken was in smaller pieces. Tender and flavorful, and fried very well to a nice crisp. Never felt heavy or greasy. What made the dish stand out was the fried basil. Adding the herbaceous note gave it a nice balance. The accompanying sweet chili aioli was good. The Double Delight Potstickers were good. I liked the triangular wrapping style which gave it more surface area for the pan fried crispy goodness. The filling was tasty and spot on. The Fooki Bao is awesome! Two thick cut pieces of tender and flavorful pork belly. The sweet, sharp, and sourness of the pickled mustard cabbage was such a nice contrast. The bun was good--soft and moist. Seems handmade. Vintage Tofu Pudding was good. Smooth, silky tofu with perfectly sweet syrup and soft peanuts and boba. The Mala Wonton Noodles is a mixed dish, and the wonton falls apart when you mix it around, so be gentle. It's overall good. The wonton filling was meaty and delicious. The noodle had a nice chew, and the sauce had a nice kick. I liked the addition of black vinegar to give it a savory and sour note. The fresh cucumber and cabbage added a nice crunch. You can add XO Sauce. This is house made, and gave this a nice richness. The Grandpa Rolling Beef was quite hefty and good, and neatly prepared. The tender beef shank, cucumber, and cabbage filling are all cold items, which made the scallion pancake become cold if you let it sit too long. So perhaps eating this as soon as possible is best. The Li Hing Mui Sweet Potato Fries... wow! Where you have been all this time? The back and forth between sweet and savory was great. The sweetness of the sweet potato with the salt plus the sweet and savory chili aioli, and the li hing mui powder is a combo of those tastes and brings everything together. The fries were perfectly crisp outside and the potato was tender. A must have! The Mua-Ji Mua-Ji is good. Tried both sesame and peanut. It's mochi balls with peanut or sesame filling rolled in a mix of kinako powder, crushed peanut and sesame, and etc. Very well prepared! Their Iced Vietnamese Coffee is delicious! Nice strong Cafe Du Monde made nice, sweet, and creamy with condensed milk. I need this every morning! The Taiwan Root Beer was good. I like it! More herb-y, less sweet. The Taiwan Song Beer was light, crisp, and refreshing. Overall, I enjoyed my meals here. The inside is comfortable and the staff and owners are very friendly, informative, welcoming, and pleasant. All the food is very well prepared and a lot better than before. The difference is very noticeable. You can tell a lot of effort was made in every dish. We came here to try the much talked about Boom Boom Chicken, along with the Monster Pork Chop, Fooki Bao, and Cow Wow braised noodle soup. The chicken had a nice salty, herby flavor from the dried greens, but after a while the dryness made it less enjoyable. The pork chop was also on the dry side. Maybe some dipping sauce like shoyu and vinegar with chili would've made it better. The bao, however, really stood out. It was thick, juicy with rich fat and flavorful garnishes. The Cow Wow noodle soup was overall tasty with tender cuts, but the shank was a bit tough to pull off the bone. Service was excellent. The young lady helping us was quick and attentive, gave great recommendations, and replaced our dropped chopsticks without even asking. Whenever I get to be back on island I have to stop at a soup/noodle shop at least once before I go. Normally that would mean a Vietnamese place or a ramen place, but this place was a welcome surprise. For starters the dumplings and grandfather beef roll if that's what they are called were absolutely delicious. And the beef soup was tasty and filling. Definitely a quiet place which is nice for small meals with friends or family, and service is as expected in a place like that meaning food was quick but a little wait to order is all. Modern Taiwanese fusion in Aiea! When my husband and I used to live in the area, we'd order takeout from here a few times, especially during the pandemic. Yet my husband strongly believes that Fooki is too "clean," too "fusion," and more pricey than he's used to for Taiwanese food (he's an ABC--American Born Chinese who grew up in LA's 626). I love that the seasoning of the Boom Boom Chicken tastes just like the pork chop from Egghead Cafe, Fooki's sister restaurant. I'm guessing Fooki and Egghead Cafe's pork chop are identical. I'm reviewing the latest version of their menu and I didn't realize Fooki expanded their menu from their originally small menu which included my and hubby's three favorite dishes! Ever since I've had laksa I'm always craving it. And it's so nice to have found a place in Honolulu that offers a consistent bowl every time. Fooki so nice, I ate here twice! The first time I ordered the pork belly rice bowl; generous portions, and extremely tasty. The second time I ordered the chef special fried pork coconut milk stew. It was so good, the only thing was that it was a lot of food and I took it home. I tried to eat it the next day and it just didn't taste the same. Great staff, they took care of us (party of 5) they even gave my 4 year old daughter a stand to use my phone to watch tv (I was using the cup to keep it up and it kept falling) I thought that was sooo sweet. I had their mushroom noodle soup and it was pretty good. The broth definitely lived up to its name because it actually had a strong mushroom taste. After my coworkers nagged and hyped up this place for weeks I finally budged and took the trip to go from town to here. *keep reading for heartbreaking story at end (I'm being over dramatic).* Personally, nothing stood out too much about this place. I packed most of my meal right off the bat and portioned it so I was only going to eat ~20% of the dish. You may notice that there are no images of the noodle soup... this is because after we finished the meal we left, AND I LEFT MY TAKEOUT THERE. I noticed after just a little less than 5 minutes and called right away. However they told me that they have already thrown it away despite having our numbers (for the reservation) as well. If you have not visited Fooki, you are probably missing out on one of the best hidden gems in the area. The first time we came to Fooki was over a year ago and this is my husbands go-to when we want to go out with friends and the first place he'll suggest when I don't know what I want for dinner. Fooki is located in the shopping center below Pearlridge mall, it's so unassuming but that just adds to the "hole-in-the-wall" effect; I love a small business that almost seems like a secret. I would suggest getting here early if you want dinner here or making a reservation because I've seen it go from two tables to packed in 20 minutes. Throughout multiple visits I've been able to try Holy Pork Nachos, Double Delight Potstickers, Mala Wonton, and their Fooki Bao appetizers. If you're not too hungry or if any of those sound good to you I would eat them as my whole meal, I know kinda weird, but that's how much I liked just the appetizers! If I was to suggest a main, get the Cow Wow Noodle Soup. That is my husbands favorite and my family's favorite to get too. For me, I'm not much of a beef person so I've tried it but I'm not someone who can appreciate it. And good portion for $15. The jjajang noodles are good for 2 bites then it's not good anymore. The beef and the sauce with the beef was not very pleasant. Reminiscent of wet cat food. I wish they included scallions in their menu description, so I could have asked for it without. They also have bean sprouts that aren't included in the description, but I'm fine with those. However, there was a MOUNTAIN of scallions mixed INTO the bean sprouts, so I took about 5 minutes just picking out every single one. And that's not an exaggeration. Please include everything in the description. The fruit teas, oh man. I took 3 sips and it was empty!! It was mostly ice. $6.50 for 3 sips. Ask for no ice or just skip it. I'd want to come again to try different dry noodles, since the jjajang noodles (server recommended) was not good. Made a reservation for 8 at opening on the weekend. Came on a suggestion from my family who has been here multiple times since finding it during COVID. Confirmed that it's now a family favorite. I never experienced eating in dine in where my food has hair on the food( one strand of hair soak in the sauce which i didnt get chance to take picture). The food at Fooki is amazing! Everything is flavorful, each with its own distinct punch of different spices. Naturally my friend and I were confused, so we walked into the restaurant and were immediately offered a table. It also took awhile for our order to be taken even though there were a lot of staff around. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it looked like some people were shadowing and in training, but still took off 1 star since the pacing of everything initially was a bit off. This restaurant has a variety on its menu. I tried a few dishes with a friend and the service was excellent they are very attentive. The ambiance was pretty normal for a restaurant. Depending on who is in the establishment will be louder or more quiet. My favorite was the boom boom chicken dish. The rest of the dishes didn't really stand out too much. My friend did mention that the last time she had gone all the dishes were phenomenal. I found them to be rather lacking but still better compared to some restaurants. The staff is very friendly!! I had a lei on for my last day at my work, and they gave me a complimentary boba ice cream for our table. Living in Pearl City, great restaurants are scarce. But I had been hearing great things about Fooki in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center and finally had a chance to experience this delicious Taiwanese cuisine. First off, be prepared to wait if you come during peak hours. There's a QR code by the entrance that enables you get on the waitlist. The restaurant itself is intimate and probably seat about 6 around the bar and another 20-30 at the tables. There is a large table that is perfect for groups of 10-12. Once you order the food comes fast and the service is attentive. Definitely get the Grandpa Rolling Beef, Boom Boom Chicken (so damn good), any of the Beef Noodle Soups, or the Chubby Ribs if you're not feeling like soup. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. If you're feeling like something sweet to end, I highly recommend the Black Sesame Ice Cream. It's a good one. I'm already thinking about what I'll order the next time we come back. I've been this place bookmarked since they opened their Pearl City location & was excited to finally try it! I love black bean noodles and was so excited to see try theirs out. We also heard the Boom Boom Chicken was good. I was able to order online and pick it up. We got 3 things and my total was $50!! I was hoping the portions would be worth the price. I was honestly disappointed at the portion sizes for the price. Nonetheless, here's what we got: Boom Boom Chicken Plate ($17): boneless fried chicken with fried basil, spices, a sauce, rice, a side of fried tofu. The chicken itself was delicious! The sauce was mayo based and was just okay. The fried tofu was soggy, full of oil and was not edible. The rice was also very dry and a bit hard. This was supposed to be shareable but, only between maybe 2 ppl. Jajang Noodles ($16): this was a fairly small portion. The sauce was thick, the veggies added a nice crunch but, the sauce tasted off from what I was expecting. I was most excited about this dish but, I wouldn't get it again. Grandpa Roll ($12): I heard good reviews about this dish and was excited to try it. It's a thin wrapper with beef inside and a tangy-ish sauce. Again, this was much smaller than I thought. The wrapper was chewy, the meat was tender but again, wasn't impressed. I wouldn't get it again. Overall, I was not impressed by any dishes. The most enjoyable dish was the chicken itself. Maybe it was because I got takeout and it would be better fresh? I'm not sure. But, I don't think I'll be craving any of these anytime soon. read more

This place was definitely not what I was expecting, but in a good way! At first when you walk up to The building you're expecting a huge restaurant inside. But this place is literally a hole in the wall... Feels like a totally different atmosphere when you walk in. There are not much seats and we had a little wait arriving right before lunch. We got to sit with our family of 5 and this place is family friendly. I seen a lot of people sharing their dishes and their portions is big enough on some dishes. We ordered the Grandpa roll, the chicken, the bao buns & I believe it was the brisket? Everything was amazing! Keep it mind, the prices are a little up there... so we will probably come back on a special occasion. Besides that, this place is a must try. Stopped by for dinner on a weekday evening so it wasn't too busy and we were seated promptly. I've ordered take away numerous times from Fooki but this was the first time I ate in house. I'm sold on the service and atmosphere and though their take out is packed excellently, I think I'll make the trip to the restaurant for the fresh food and friendly service. I got the pork chop laksa and that broth was divine. My partner is vegetarian and had no problem choosing from plenty of options. I also tried one of the tofu bao and loved it. The quality of food here is a level above the cost which is difficult to find in Hawaii. Very reasonably priced. I highly recommend stopping by as I anticipate Fooki will become a regular spot for us to relax. Cheers! read more
