First time eating at Kapiolani Coffee Shop in a long time, and it did not disappoint. The place has such a local, laid-back ambiance that really gives you that classic Hawaii comfort feel. We came in for a family breakfast this morning and were seated right away, which was a great start. The service was super quick -- our food came out in less than 10 minutes after ordering, which was impressive, especially during breakfast hours. Everything felt smooth, easy, and welcoming. Definitely a solid spot if you're looking for a relaxed, local-style breakfast experience.

Had breakfast to day at Kapiolani Coffee Shop. The service was excellent. I ordered bacon and egg with toast. . Bacon medium and eggs over easy. The cook did it perfectly. The toast was the exception. it was under done. Otherwise a perfect meal. Enjoy

My husband had the oxtail soup, I had chicken katsu with fried noodles and side order scoop rice. My husband always gets the soup. I have yet to find my go to meal there although I really did enjoy the noodles and the ladies were very nice.

First time here located in the Waimalu Shopping Center, was a hot Saturday afternoon 1:30 pm. Wanted a place to sit in a/c. comfort. Lots of places to eat in the center.Got seated & May was our server. We chose a Cheeseburger Deluxe , side of French fries & a Fried Saimin. May was friendly& had to come back a second time, cuz we couldn't decide. The food arrived in a timely manner& it was all so delicious! Sitting down in a cool restaurant, made the lunch really nice. Having May being very nice& her partner server, Jackie was a treat to have excellent customer service! The inside of the restaurant is simple, but clean Will return on our shopping trips ! Reasonable & good hearty food! Thank you!

I always come for the oxtail soup here. It's my very favorite place to get the Chinese style version! Simmered with star anise and tangerine peel, flavored heavily with Chinese parsley and peanuts. Shoyu and grated ginger provided on the side. Mostly order for takeout so I can head back into town before traffic builds up tho have eaten here in the dining room on occasion. Very old school; greasy spoon joint; very come as you are. On takeout I love how the counter person always packs my order so well. And always get extra grated ginger (well worth the slight upcharge). Order then walk over to Palama Market for a "few extras". Take out order always quick and ready when I return. Located in Waimalu Shopping Center strip mall sharing parking with many other eateries. Parking always full yet always someone leaving. Patience is a virtue. And good food which touches the soul is worth the small wait!

This place will always be a staple for myself and my family. The oxtail soup is still the best on the island. Yes it's close to $30, but the flavor is unmatched. Still cheaper to buy it than make it at home + labor. And for $8 to get a burger and some fries? Timeless classics. The burgers here are so simple and just bring you back to small kid time. I will always make the drive to come out here whenever I'm craving.

Delicious and perfectly warm soup for the rainy weather we have been having! Not a BYOB establishment. Family oriented environment. Would come here for family dinner again, not too loud

A staple for oxtail soup! I usually get the oxtail soup with rice, but I tried the saimin version and I loved it. There's ginger shoyu sauce for more flavor, but I usually add a ton of tabasco lol. The noodles weren't overcooked and the oxtail was so tender. Aunties serving us was great and the place was small and cozy. The parking lot can get super full though

Stopped in for a quick late lunch. Greeted promptly by server & ordered Oxtail soup (regular size) & the food was delivered quickly. Soup is always good, their recipe is consistent as to what it was back in the day at the old Kam Bowl coffee shop. I request to get the green onions on the side, just so Im able to enjoy the flavor of the broth. This is the place to go if you need a simple yet perfectly prepared oxtail soup. Straight to the point...yummy.

We were in the area and decided to go Kapiolani Coffee Shop (haven't been in years) for Breakfast. We got there around 9:30 and there was only one table open so we seated ourselves immediately. I ordered a regular sized ox-tail soup and my boyfriend ordered the adobo fried rice and the lechon kawali to share. We ordered our toodler just a pancake. Our food came so fast, I don't even think we waited 5 minutes. When I started on my ox-tail I noticed it was a little bland for me so ended up pouring half my ginger sauce in the bowl to give it more flavor- also the oxtails had so much fat that wasn't trimmed so I had to cut it off before I ate it. My toddlers pancake was cooked on the outside but the middle part was still raw. They could've probably let it cook for a minute more. The best dish was the lechon kawali. The pork skin was so airy & crispy but not hard. The meat and fat just melted in my mouth. It was soooo good. However, I think they only serve that on Fridays and Saturdays. I probably won't come back anytime soon but if I did, I'd definitely order the Lechon.

They add green onions, too but I asked for no green onions. Plenty of parsley for parsley fans. Ask for more ginger.

Located in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center area of Aiea, the restaurant has a modern and comfortable dining space that feels both lively and welcoming. The layout is well suited for group dining, which makes sense given the communal nature of shabu shabu. The moment we were seated, the staff were attentive and helpful in explaining the menu and how the ordering process works for guests who may be less familiar with the style of dining. What immediately stood out was the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Shabu shabu is a cuisine where ingredient integrity matters significantly because the cooking process is very simple. Rokaru clearly prioritizes fresh vegetables, well-prepared broths, and thinly sliced meats that cook quickly and evenly in the hot pot. The beef selections were particularly impressive, with slices that had excellent marbling and tenderness. Once briefly cooked in the broth, the meat developed a rich flavor while still maintaining a delicate texture. The broth options were another highlight of the meal. Each broth offered its own flavor profile, allowing diners to customize their experience depending on their preferences. The broths were flavorful without becoming overly salty or heavy, which allowed the natural taste of the meats and vegetables to come through. As ingredients were added throughout the meal, the broth continued to develop deeper flavor, which is one of the pleasures of well-executed shabu shabu. The sauce bar also added an enjoyable level of customization. Having the ability to mix dipping sauces allows each diner to tailor the flavor balance of each bite. Whether leaning toward something more savory, slightly spicy, or bright with citrus, the sauces complemented the cooked ingredients well without overwhelming them. Service throughout the meal remained attentive and efficient. Staff checked in regularly to ensure that broths were maintained, orders were correct, and diners had everything they needed. The pacing of the meal felt comfortable, allowing our group to take time enjoying each round of ingredients without feeling rushed. The overall atmosphere contributed positively to the experience. The dining room had an energetic but controlled environment that made it easy to enjoy conversation while cooking and sharing food together. Shabu shabu naturally encourages a social dining style, and Rokaru does a good job creating a space that supports that experience. Overall, Rokaru Shabu Shabu delivers a well-executed hot pot experience with fresh ingredients, flavorful broths, and attentive service. The restaurant demonstrates a clear understanding of what makes shabu shabu enjoyable: quality ingredients, balanced broths, and a welcoming environment where diners can take their time and enjoy the process of cooking their meal.

We were not disappointed, but that is not why I would definitely be back. Let me give a little background. We are only supposed to be there from 5 to 9 at the latest. Initially, it was quiet people were watching TV and there was literal families. They're having dinner. We quietly drank, ordered our food and flipped through the karaoke book for when we were enough intoxicated to start singing. Keep in mind everyone was still eating. My friend, who is a fantastic singer, finally put in a song and out of the corner of the room all we heard was "Oo. Are we singing now?" or something to that effect. After my friend broke the ice and sang the first song it was all singing from that point forward. The songs arranged from country to old 80s love songs to whatever, and they were being sung by people from all over the room. Couple tables turned over while we were there, despite that if a good song came on, people were singing from their seats and it was not an issue to anybody. By the 10 o'clock hour, my friend was singing duets with a guy. She's never met before, but who could sing and the whole bar was just on such a positive vibe. Food was great. The wait help is fantastic. We ended up staying till midnight. Closing the bar down. It was such an intimate and welcoming vibe that we will definitely be visiting again.

Located in Pearl Kai Shopping Center, Build Your Own Rmaen (BYOR) opened on December 26, 2018 offering create your own bowl of noodles. As a townie and not keen to fight traffic, I've bookmarked this business and finally made it here after 6 years. Late to the party but better than never... I was invited to celebrate a birthday with noodles and was asked to give suggestions near Pearl City area. I immediately jumped and mentioned BYOR, and used next door neighbor Island Glazed Donuts as an incentive. No further explanation needed so I took off 1/2 day from work to attend this get together. It was a right decision to come here for lunch as traffic from town was light and lots of parking as we arrived on a Wednesday. With many shared businesses in this lot, parking can get challenging here. The restaurant was fairly empty as I arrived at 1215pm and sat on a long table for our group of 5. They have picture menus so it's easy to follow the instructions to order. Interior was bright and welcoming with many signs of food pictures posted on the walls and as well on each table. Near the entrance are 2 long showcases of meats and vegetables. Signs advise you the price and there's also a laminated chart on the wall near the scale that calculates your cost as your bowl is dependent on the weight. You grab an empty basket and pair of tongs and you select what you want. For me, I chose head on shrimp, book tripe, beef tendon, fish ball with roe, squid, bamboo shoots, black fungus, fried tofu, pumpkin slices and king mushroom. You take your basket to the register to have it officially weighed where you also select your broth and type of starch. I was craving a curry broth but unfortunately that wasn't an option. I then took a leap of faith by trying the spicy sour cabbage broth. In addition to each of us getting our bowl of noodles, my sister also wanted to try their spring rolls. Perhaps because it wasn't busy our food came out quickly. Piping hot, our creations were nicely presented with toppings nicely arranged. We snapped away with our cameras and it was finally time to dig in. THE VERDICT: Overall, very impressed with the food quality and execution. Loved how tender the book tripe and beef tendon were. The head on shrimp were cooked until perfection - - juicy and lots of shrimp head fat. Yummo!!! My noodles had a great chew and bounce, however, I wasn't a real fan of the spicy sour cabbage broth. Kinda tasted like a tom yum koong but somewhat funky. I jazzed up my creation with their housemade satay sauce that was off the charts. Highly recommended. Service was above average as the staff came to check up on us and refilled our water cups. She even came to see if we had room for our complimentary Taiwanese style shave ice dessert that comes with ramen orders. This bowl was heavenly. So refreshing and cooled our palates down after a hot bowl of noodles. We enjoyed our first visit to BYOR and will be back again. I'll be sure to order another broth and perhaps sample other appetizers that got my attention. NOTE. You pay for your meal after you're done. My bowl was a whopping $35. For a party of 5 service charge of 18% was automatically tacked on to our bill. You also have the option of adding more gratuity in addition to the automatic service charge. 2026 #55
