It consists of 1 scoop of rice, 1 maki sushi, 1 inari sushi ( classic taste, vinegary without shoyu ) 1 slice of teri beef, 1 slice of Spam, 2 slices of chicken katsu, on top a bed of fried noodles. Everything in the bento was good...fried noodles were a bit oily. Teri beef was tender and well seasoned. At, $20, it was a big meal. I could not finish it all. Open from 700a until 900p daily. Tonight I had the hamburger steak plate with side order fries n the wife the Ron Mizutani special, thats a won ton min with a hamburger. The food is always tasty n great. Portion are good. Chloe was our server n she does a great job. Her customer service is great n very polite and friendly. She checks on us to see how we doing n if everything is great. Came her numerous times before, but not for a long time. I ordered the same thing that I've always eaten, the Dodonpa, Ultimate King of Saimins lol. Came about 20 minutes after opening. We wanted to try their country fried noodles but the lady said that wasn't ready yet as they just opened. We got the #21 Portuguese Saimin, Lau Lau with Beef Stew, side of the Mac Salad, and the Single Banana Hot Cake. They came out fairly quick as it wasn't that busy. Saimin was good. I added shoyu and the taste made it slightly better. Lau Lau and Beef Stew were good too. It was surprising that the lau lau had butter fish inside. Not many people put in butter fish. Shiros Saimin Haven not only staple but from 808 know one best spots on island for Saimin. I ended up going twice while I was back home. The first time went with Saimin action! So fwk good. Came here because I had a craving for saimin. Came at 2pm and it was packed! Had to wait just a little bit for a table luckily. Server came by with water fairly quickly and then took our orders. And we bless you too with our love for real and true. ~Shiro" Owner Franz Shiro Matsuo of Shiro's Saimin House & Family Restaurant, wrote "Dear Hearts" poems, such as the one above, noting the words of wisdom about life, with some of the poems adorning the walls of his restaurants. The poems were meant to make people laugh and contemplate their actions. While in the army during WWII, Shiro gained a passion for food, as he served as a cook assistant and personal chef for a colonel. After the war ended, he held various jobs, such as being a chef at Mochizuki Tea House in Liliha, to learn about cooking and the restaurant business, and even was a personal chef for Governor John Burns. He also flew to Japan to learn about the art of making sushi and noodles. He also taught culinary arts at Kapiolani Community College Shiro opened his 1st restaurant in Aiea Bowl in 1969 and moved to its current location at Waimalu Shopping Center in 1971. He is credited with creating 58 versions of saimin and turned saimin from a snack to a meal. He created the "Dodonpa," the king of saimin consisting of beef broth, noodles, with 10 garnishes of fried shrimp, roast beef, char siu, won ton, Chinese roast pork, luncheon meat, imitation crab, mushrooms, eggs, and veggies. Shiro was the 1st to introduce these items to glorify saimin, and to sub spaghetti in potato-mac salad. Shiro was also a free-spirited entrepreneur, being a self-taught ukulele player and singer, which oftentimes, he would be entertaining his diners in his restaurants. He also visited schools, senior citizen clubs, and rotary clubs to give motivational talks about following your dreams. With the passing of Shiro and his wife, his daughter and her 3 sons own and manage Shiro's today. They own their own noodle factory, established a 2nd location of Shiro's Restaurant in Ewa Beach, and introduced modern technology to facilitate management. Shiro's Restaurant also offers non-noodle dishes that include American, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino cuisines, as well as burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast. Many of these items can be combined with a saimin. Some of the saimin items are named after local celebrities, such as Ron Mizutani, Jesus Salud, and Joe Moore. I am just amazed as to the menu choices which makes it difficult to choose! I normally go with whatever craving I have at the moment, such as roast duck, sushi, teri beef, or gau gee. As I like roast duck, I enjoy Joe Moore's Special, as the saimin has roast duck, won tons, won bok, and garnishes of chair siu, luncheon meat, and green onion. And always nice to pair it with a Hula Burger, which is Ron Mizutani's Special Pretty much all items are delicious with inexpensive prices with generous servings. Family operated and run, Shiro's daughter, Linda Matsuo and her family, continued the legacy of Shiro. Longtime employees were efficient, dedicated, hardworking, and friendly in maintaining positive relationships to customers. Nothing fancy with the interior, with its many tables and booths for diners. Walls are adorned with poems by Shiro and local awards. The restaurant is clean and bright. Hours of operation are daily 7a to 9p. Located in the Waimalu Shopping Center in Aiea, free parking is available in the complex that is shared with other businesses. However, during peak times, it may be difficult to find parking with so many eateries in the complex, but patience will make spaces available when drivers leave. With good local homestyle saimin and comfort food at reasonable prices, and with an extensive menu that has something for everyone, I'll certainly be back to try different menu items! I was born & raised in Oahu and have NEVER tried a saimin place before... and man I was missing out! My husband loves eating at local places & was craving for a good saimin. We came about 40 minutes before closing and we were seated right away. This place is huge... I didn't even know they had additional seating in the back. It was like a cozy hole in the wall type of restaurant vibe. Service was 10/10!! Our server was so sweet and super inviting! We never felt rush during our entire stay and she made us felt like family! I wish I got her name but if you were the Filipino lady that was working Thursday night that helped us, you definitely deserve a promotion! I feel like she was more of the lead servers since the rest of the other servers were asking her for things... but amazing service! This is one of the main reasons why my husband & I will be a regular customer. They serve more than just saimin! They had lots of different variations of saimins, from the basic saimin to saimin with won ton & udon! The list went on... they also had plate lunches, burgers, sandwiches and so forth. I personally loved how they served green river. It definitely brought me back to my childhood and a sign that this business has been in business since back in the day. The food we ordered: Small won ton min (4/5): broth was flavorful, was very generous with the toppings. My only complaint was the won ton was more wrapper than it was filling. The wun tun were plentiful and nicely-stuffed, but the wrappers were overcooked and borderline mushy, the dish's only downfall. Garnishes included sliced packaged ham, won bok,char siu, green onions and sliced scrambled egg. Recommended. The spouse enjoyed the #12 Combination Saimin and Udon with Vegetables and Garnishes which came only as a large size judging by the bowl and a Ham with Egg Sandwich (though with some wilted lettuce). She wasn't a fan, and it boasts on the menu that it's an employee favorite. She loved her egg and rice though. I opted for the 2 eggs and meat w fried rice. My scrambled eggs were overcooked. My sausage was perfect. However, I wasn't a fan of the fried rice. I felt like there was too much char siu in it and the flavor over powered the rice. The tempera shrimp was coated in a light fried layer. Hamburger size was similar to the size of MCD burger, it was a great small snack. Overall the dish is pretty huge, I would recommend sharing this with someone for a 75% filled dish. Joe's Saimin Delight: Noodles with Roast Duck, Wun Tun, Vegetables and Garnishes. Went on a Friday at around 6 pm. It was a rainy day too so a few friends and I decided to try this place out. I decided to get the #55 combo which comes with the wonton saimin and a burger. I added a Teri sauce to the burger. I heard the two pair well together, so I wanted to try it myself. The soup was good with the vegetables but the broth/flavor was a bit bland. I decided to add soy sauce and hot mustard to the broth and it made it better. I'm glad they had these sauces available at the tables. The Teri Burger was delicious and perfectly flavorful with the sauce added to it. Dipped in the saimin was also good! read more
