Shout out to Yelp Elite, Mary T, for introducing me to this palace. Two young ladies, new to managing a restaurant, are doing a stellar job. I'll keep this short and sweet because when it comes to Chinese food, it's most important to just sit down, order, and eat. My favorite dish is their salt and pepper shrimp. I had it the first time around... So good I had to order it again. Be careful with the jalapeno peppers. They add a nice kick to the shrimp but if you eat the pepper, prepare to have a hot tongue. The garlic and scallions are a nice addition for added flavor. Kung pao chicken? Yep, it's delicious. I pretty much ate this entire dish to myself. Their General Tso chicken dish is not the heavy sauce kind you get at a fast food/take out spot. This one has the flavors you know of without the heavy food coma feeling after. Now on to the roast duck. Juicy. Tender. Lots of flavor. The best part? The skin. Wrap a few bites of rice with the duck skin and you're in for a huge win. On my second visit we added fried rice and the stuffed eggplant. The eggplant is a small meal in itself as each eggplant has a bit of shrimp wrapped inside of it. As you can imagine, fried rice is always good for leftovers so I made sure to enjoy this meal at home. Overall, I'm excited to go back to a place like this. Yeah, there's a few great Chinese restaurants within a few miles of each other so you have options and you should definitely bring this restaurant into your mix. read more

Oh there are so many things to say about this place, both good and bad. The end result is that the food and service is good enough to warrant a return visit and still leave me with a positive opinion about this place. First the good stuff. We went on a Sunday evening and the place was completely empty. Our group was the only one there. This can be good and bad. Good that we had the whole place to ourselves so our kids could be loud without disturbing anyone. Bad that there is no one eating there. Wny is that? Maybe it was just because it was a dead night. They have a huge bar that is right in the middle of the restaurant, which seems a little odd but from what I could tell they had a huge selection of drinks and plenty of places to sit. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. Because there was no one else there we also had some of the other wait staff helping us so we were never low on drinks or anything else. The food: I was able to try the Gyoza, Ha Gao, Salted Fish Rice, Salted Soft Shell Crab, and Salted Flounder. I have to say that the food was excellent! Everything I tasted that night was absolutely delicious. The food alone is worth giving this place a shot! Another nice thing was that my daughter had left her toys at the table and our waitress was kind enough to run outside to us as we were leaving to give it back! Now onto the bad: While their menu is huge, there were several things I tried ordering that they either didn't serve anymore or didn't have that night. in fact, I tried to order an avocado shake and they said they didn't have milk. Milk? I might understand not having avocados on hand, but milk seems a little basic to not have in the kitchen. My friend also ordered coffee which he never received. All in all, while I was disappointed by the inaccurate menu, the food was good enough to hold it's ground and my friends and I came to a consensus that we would come back again to give it another try. read more

Great service by the waiters. The waitress was very nice and attentive to our group. I had the chicken Pho. It was good especially the broth. Pho is a good dish for a rainy day and good for people with digestive issues. The bowl is very filling. I don't recommend their sweet tea - it is not that great. But by the time my mother got to the end of her sweet-and-sour shrimp there was an entire piece of metal from the scrubber and the restaurant recognized it was the scrubber that they used to clean the shrimp. When asked about how they were going to resolve it they only offered to take 20% off of the tab. We had to tell them that we were not willing to pay for the food and they eventually took it off. Again it was a piece of metal scrubber in the shrimp from their kitchen, that they recognized and owned. I don't prefer being treated different my or not considered. The ambience was amazing with great customer service. Good was a great portion with reasonable prices. Love how there's parking in the front and side. Huge menu, all of it delicious! I've been to Forbidden Palace twice now. & both times they have not disappointed. From the outside, it looks like a small establishment. But then you walk in & see how much seating they offer. The menu is broken up by type of food. Sushi, Korean, Japanese, American Chinese, etc. Then within each type, they break it down by sub food type. Classic sushi rolls, signature rolls, sushi apps. At first it can be overwhelming, but once you decided a flavor or type of food you want, it's a lot easier to narrow it down. This last time we went we got a plethora of options : sushi, dumplings, soups, pancit - all of it tasted great & came out not just in a timely fashion, but also within less than 5 minutes of each other. I chose this place bc I was in the mood for all Asian foods and liked how they offer Chinese and Japanese food. Unfortunately, on the day we came their Sushi chef was out for the day to a family emergency. I was bit upset bc I was really wanted sushi (sighs) but the show must go on. For starters we ordered peking duck. I only ever had Peking Duck at Jade Villa. If you want to suffice your peking duck cravings for a cheaper price, come here! It's soo worth it and they give you more food. We ordered Dried String Bean w/ Pork and Hunan Shrimp. Both were OK to me. I think it was just those two dishes that seem basic to me. It was fresh, but taste wish I wasn't blown away. Service was friendly and prompt. They even have a specials board. I'm going to have to give this place another try. My family (mother, father, brother and daughter) and I ate here for dinner to casually celebrate my birthday. I was intrigued by the idea of a Chinese and sushi restaurant. Positives were that the servers and staff were all very kind and professional. The place seemed clean and was decorated nicely. It was much more put together looking than the last time I ate here (around 3 years ago.) The food was very tasty, everyone was satisfied. The overall experience was not on par with prices. The food came out at random times. At no point was the whole family on the same course at the same time. The sushi (that me and my brother ordered) came out fairly late, and it was indicated by the waitress that this was to be expected since it was happy hour. Once we got the sushi, it was tasty. BUT, my dish included shrimp and crab as 2 of the "assorted sashimi". At most sushi restaurants I've been to, shrimp or crab is an extra on the plate of a sashimi dish. My dish also included fresh, crisp, cucumber slices instead of pickled. They didn't give us chop sticks or soy sauce bowls. When my brother requested a bowl, they scrambled to get some, and expressed that these were the last 2 they had. read more

I went here for lunch. This restaurant has a wide variety of Asian food. They don't start serving sushi until noon so I had to wait 9 minutes. My server, Jinky, was very nice and apologized for the wait. She also asked if I wanted any appetizers. I ordered a hurricane roll and some sashimi. The presentation was beautiful and tasty. This place is hands down the best place in the area for Chinese food. The Egg Drop soup is terrific. Sweet and Sour Chicken is great. Pork fired rice was prepared well. The Chicken Chow Mein was tasty and the vegetables were crunchy not wilted and soggy. It is nothing like the take out restaurants throughout the area. read more

My husband and I have been having a hard time finding a Chinese restaurant that we like. This place is just OK. Nothing to write home about, but at least it's not a hole in the wall. They have everything from Chinese, to Vietnamese, to Cantonese.... I think that's a good and bad thing. Since, their menu is so big, they haven't perfected any particular dish so the food is just 3 out of 5 stars. We usually get their teriyaki chicken/beef, Singapore noodles (Chicken and Beef) and some kind of fried rice dish (shrimp, chicken or beef). We've also had their salmon, which I think is better than anything I've had there and beef lo mein. With all the dishes, it's not the worst I've had, but I've had better. Unless we go to PF Chang's way up the street...we'll probably continue to eat here, but if we find some place better...we won't return. read more

This place is great. I've been eating at the Forbidden Palace for over 20 years. That's amazing. Lmao. Anyway my kids love sesame chicken. And I have to say I notice a beautiful difference in their sesame chicken compared to other sesame chickens. It had a very delicious honey flavor. Very very good. Tried to place a delivery order for dinner and could not get through on either of the phone lines even after a half hour of trying. Went to the website and tried to place an online order; finished entering the order and went to check out only to find that the website was down and was directed to call one of the numbers that I'd been trying to get through on. What a joke! We would've spent over $70 for our order tonight (without tip) but ended up ordering from some place else because we couldn't get through to anyone in the restaurant to place the order. I heard good things about this place and decided to give it a try for delivery. I ordered Wanton Soup, Sesame Chicken with House Fried Rice and House Lo Mein. Also a few sodas. Took over an hour to get the food, which was acceptable. When food arrived, there were no napkins or utensils, why I specifically requested. The main dish container's cover had come off in the bag, so it was basically as if the food was poured into the plastic bag, so I was not able to eat it. The soup had a nice broth but sour dumplings. Drank the broth and ate the Bak Choi. I threw the rest away. I can't comment on the House Lo Mein because I didn't get it. I got two orders of House Fried Rice. I called them to review the situation. I wasn't looking for a refund or anything, I just wanted to make them aware. The gentleman I spoke to what courteous and understanding. Regardless, I will not be ordering from them again. I stumbled upon this because the neighboring restaurant had about an hour wait, but turned out to be one of The Best Asian cuisine restaurants I've been in (and I'm very picky). Great atmosphere, attentive and pleasant service, and although they were short staffed it really wasn't that long of a wait to receive our food. The food was fresh, hot, & Delicious!! I have been eating here since before they changed ownership. I've eaten here many, many times. Tonight I was ill and I wanted some soothing Chinese food. Instead, I got shrimp that was bad and unfortunately, I made The other two ladies with me taste it as well and they said that it was about. There's nothing worse than being sick and having bad shrimp. One of the women ordered a simple dish of I have sesame chicken. I don't think I've ever had a bad sesame chicken anywhere. But hers was bad and because we paid $65 we continued to try to eat it, they continue to eat the crab Rangoon trying to get something out of this meal. On top of that not knowing if I have Covid or not, I had to find somebody to deliver this back to the restaurant in order to get any kind of credit. They have just lost a customer that is been shopping with them for ages. On top of that they only refunded $24.00. Considering $15 was a tip this is unacceptable! I've been home alone, throwing up, because they wanted the food in before 9:00.. there's no excuse for bad food even during Covid. It's absolutely unconscionable to try to make other people sicker. We had my son's Red Egg & Ginger party here, and were very pleased by the experience. We came in about a month prior, and Evan put together a special menu for us, including Peking duck and a selection of vegetarian dishes. Our guests' palates ranged from no experience with Asian food to discriminating foodies & they all loved it. The back room easily fit almost 50 people & the wait staff was awesome. First time visiting this local culinary landmark. The restaurant was relatively busy for a Wednesday night, however we were immediately seated and our drink order was taken. We then placed our order for appetizers and entrees. Our party knew something was wrong when the appetizers started coming out of the kitchen one at a time. Our server, who was nothing but helpful and courteous, explained to us that there was a problem with the printer in the kitchen. She apologized and said that they were trying to rectify the issue. As for the food, I must say I was pleasantly surprised! My party chose entrees from across the menu. Once again, the food came out one dish at a time due to kitchen issues. I had the Tripple Happiness which was cooked perfectly and paired nicely with the vegetable fried rice. My appetizers were an egg roll and vegetable pot stickers. The others had sushi and Cantonese specialties. Only problem here was one of the entrees had cooled to room temperature. My step-son ate it and didn't say anything until we were in the car on the way home. All in all, it was an overall good experience. The total for the 4 of us was less than what we had spent at Peter Chang's 2 weeks prior, and my gastric reflux wasn't bothering me immediately after eating. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is the whole kitchen fiasco. I hope they do better on my next visit. read more

A few thoughts, rather than a full review: - There's a microwave at the bar. - The staff, while pleasant, seemed mostly aloof as to the needs of the guests - Nothing had much flavour. The hibachi chicken was bland. The chili oil, which as advertised contained chilis and oil, had no heat. - My side of brocolli was both undercooked and overcooked. - Prices were on par with that at PF Chang's, but without the quality. - Absolutely massive seating area. We went as a group of 8 and we were treated like emperors and empresses! People were very friendly and service was great! The restaurant is spacious with quiet and contemporary atmosphere. The bar has a wide selection of cocktails and martini. Definitely get raw fish and sushi rolls. They are fresh, delicious, and creative! For traditional Chinese dish I really love the roast duck! Honestly, Forbidden Palace is hands-down the BEST Chinese food in the Tidewater area! It's a shame that they don't deliver, but they're so good that we happily drive all the way from the Oceanfront down to Rosemont Rd. to pick up take-out. The flavors are amazing, and they use fresh, high-quality ingredients. It's a little pricier than your average take-out joint, but completely worth it! The ambiance is nice... Appropriate, but understated. Soft lighting and a well-stocked bar. The service is always fantastic. When calling in a take-out order, we often seem to forget to add our salads, but when I show up and ask to add them, it never takes more than a few minutes. I think they also have good lunch specials. I especially recommend the Beef Chow Mei Fun, the Szechuan green beans, and the Mongolian Beef, although their other dishes are just as good. They also have a good little house salad with yummy ginger dressing. All in all, I can't say enough good things! We have eaten here a few times since the beginning of the year. Their combination lettuce wrap with chicken, shrimp and pork is amazing! The other night we were struggling as we tried to decide what to eat for dinner. We've lived in the King Grant area for a few months and we still hadn't found a decent Chinese food place that delivered. So I started researching online and this place had some decent reviews and lucky for us we are in their three mile delivery range. We decided to place an order of, Salt and Pepper Crunchy Shrimp Szechuan Beef Chicken Lo Mein Two Egg rolls Crab Rangoon The Salt and Pepper Crunchy Shrimp was amazing, it was cooked perfectly and had some delicious seasoning on the top that we could not figure out. We think it was maybe caramelized garlic pieces. Anyway, this was probably one of the MOST delicious things I've eaten in my life! The Szechuan Beef was also delicious, very spicy, but they warn you about that anyway. Just keep in mind, when they put a red pepper next to something on the menu they aren't messin' around. I was literally crying while I ate it, so delicious... but so painful. The Lo Mein was good, better than average, we mainly bought it for the kids, and they loved it. The Egg rolls were fantastic! My husband claims they were the best he's EVER had... ever. Crab Rangoon was pretty good, but I think if I had to do it over I would order more egg rolls instead. Forbidden Palace is officially our favorite Chinese food delivery! I was pretty impressed with the variety of different dishes they had, and how fresh the food was once it was delivered.
