Service was fast, and my egg fu young was slightly undercooked and tasteless. As I continued to eat, I noticed the rice had a bite to it, so the fried rice was also undercooked. Hubby ordered the General Tso's with vegetable rice as I, I asked to taste his rice, nicely flavored, and well cooked. Well, the egg fu young gravy..tasteless as well. I don't get to this Chinese restaurant much, but it is probably last time. The dinner specials come with an entree and egg roll. That's it. Got delivery, that was fine. The food was hot, but It's just average. General Tso's should be crispy and sauced. It was soggy, but the portion was great. Probably won't order again. My wife and I have been looking for good Chinese food for a while in the area and we finally found it. The Mongolian Beef will melt you in your chair. The Pork fried rice brings a smile to my face every time. The only negative thing I have to say is that the eggrolls have changed in the past year or so. They used to be perfect. I would order only egg rolls at times as a snack if I was in the plaza. Honestly, egg rolls are how I define how good a Chinese food place is. A year and a half ago, I would have given Golden Star 5 stars, but the egg rolls have changed. Not sure if they started using a different vendor or what. They used to be flaky and full of fresh goodness that made my heart sing in Chinese. I had no clue what my heart was singing because I don't speak Chinese, but it was lovely. Now, the egg rolls are mushy on the inside and it makes me sad. This is not based on one or two visits. We eat from here at least once per month and the last year has been disappointing when it comes to the egg rolls. The rest of the food is delicious, which is why we keep coming back. But I must admit that if we find a place with better egg rolls, there is no telling what might happen. But if you don't like egg rolls, this place would be 5 stars for you! P.S. I ordered the bean curd and broccoli. I saw the overall good reviews and ignored the bad one I just read near the top....I agree with the one that mentioned how bland the food was. My tofu was inedible. The broccoli is overcooked. We started off on a rocky start setting that I called and asked if they had tofu and broccoli as a lunch special and they said yes for me to arrive and notify me that it wasn't there and that I would need to pay $1 extra then that using a card would be .3 extra. Golden Star is located in the Walmart Neighborhood Market plaza, offering an extensive menu that offers beef/pork/chicken/seafood/vegetable dishes, appetizers and soup, egg foo young, chow mein, chop suey, noodle dishes, fried rice, and various chef's recommendations and specialties. We had heard that this place offers the best fried rice and orange chicken, so we decided to give this place a try for a later dinner. We called in for a hot & sour soup, orange chicken, crab rangoon, and chicken fried rice. Unfortunately, the food was just not good - the fried rice was unflavorful, and the bits of chicken and the veggies were a bit dried out; the orange chicken had an off-putting taste to them, so this was pushed off to the side; crab rangoon was okay, but the wonton wrappers were a bit too chewy and not as crispy; and, the hot & sour soup that the hubs had ordered was a bit watered down. We also tried their house-brewed sweet tea and lemonade mix; I appreciated in them packing it in a convenient way, lining the bottom of the plastic bag with a piece of cardboard so that the drinks don't tip over - very thoughtful! While the drinks were a bit too sweet for us, it was the only item that we enjoyed from the order. The staff here was very welcoming and friendly, and they were very generous with adding in chili oil and other condiments in our bag. I'm glad I was able to give Golden Star a try, but wouldn't return - I just wished we had the same delicious experience as others! After my recent experience at Golden Star I will not be going back. The food is absolutely terrible. The best thing was the shrimp fried rice but it had way too many onions. The flavor and seasoning were below average. The gravy was basically inedible; I can not describe the taste in words but it reminded me of some kind of chemical. The food did not seem fresh at all especially the spring rolls and the egg rolls. Ordinarily I would be excited to get more than what I paid for but this time the cook decides to overfill the container. My shrimp fried spilled all over my bag basically leaving me a few spoon fulls ($80 worth of food for a small group in a brown paper bag). They did not label any of the food so I could not tell what was what. I always have some issue with the person taking orders at the front counter and this time she forgot part of my order. I did not eat inside the restaurant but I stood inside for about 15 minutes. The inside is extremely dirty and there are lots of small insects flying and/or crawling around everywhere. read more

Just underwhelming. I enjoyed the fried dumplings but still was a let down for my cheat meal. We were psyched to see lumpia's on the menu! This is never available in the Northeast. Had an excellent dinner from here Saturday night. This was my first time trying Golden Star and it was excellent. They're located on Kempsville Road in the shopping center with the Walmart Grocery and the Wawa. A nice feature of Golden Star is that you can order online and then go pick it up (they don't deliver currently). They're only a couple of miles from the house so in no time at all, like 20 minutes, I was walking out of the place with dinner. In fact, they had it bagged up and ready to go as I arrived. For my dinner I ordered Beef & Broccoli with veggie fried rice and a pork egg roll on the side. They also know how to make some fried rice. It was brown, not that yellow stuff. The food was delicious, well prepared and the portion was huge. I had about half for dinner and took the rest to work for lunch. Also on your first visit, which they knew since I ordered online, you get a free soda from their cooler. I saved that for lunch also. I order their hot and sour soup constantly because it's filled with healthy, delicious ingredients. She adds just the right amount of veggies and a few small strips of tasty pork. It's better than any other hot and sour soup I've ever tried. All of the dishes on their menu seem to have superior ingredients and you know how great it feels to feed your body something nutritious and delicious. You're usually greeted with a smile. Disappointing! The fried rice was rancid...clearly old and reheated from yesterday. It smelled off and I won't be surprised if I'm sick later. The egg fu young didn't have any flavor and the Szechuan green beans were still basically raw with garlic sauce on top. The crab Rangoon was pretty good and so was the egg roll. I'm throwing the rest of it out. This used to be my fave Chinese spot when I lived in Chesapeake and it first opened up. Our go to for Chinese food. Amazing food but what truly keeps us coming back is the service. The lady behind the counter most nights is extremely nice. She knows my by name and always has something funny to say. A pleasure to talk to. There was a time I also forgot to hit the last send button for my online order. I arrived at closing time. My review is more of a 3 1/2 stars. They're very friendly and good customer service. Lunch specials are big portions. Had the general tso, szechuan chicken, pu pu platter and spring rolls. The best thing on the pu pu platter was the shrimp toast. The shrimp wasn't bad, bbq spared ribs and egg roll. Didn't try the wings so I cant say. The general tso has great flavor and I would make the hour drive back if each piece had meat in it. Some pieces were full of chicken and others had none. The szechuan chicken was great. Meat nice and tender, spicy, crispy vegetables and nice sauce. The fried rice is pretty good here. Love that it has veggies, egg and color to it. I wish it had a touch more flavor, like 5 chinese spice or even white pepper. The spring rolls werent for us. A little thick around the wrapping and a lot of pepper. Lo mein was too much soy and not enough flavor for us. Again, big portions and fried rice was good. Flavors were good on most dishes. I would give it another try. read more

My wife and lived in Norfolk and ate at Kin's Woc many times. We felt there food was the best in Norfolk. We moved to Chesapeake 3 years ago and found Golden Star. The food here is the best I have eaten outside the Chinatown section of San Fransisco. I highly recommend General Tso Chicken, the House Lo mien, and the garlic chicken. The big concern here is quality control. One order is perfect . The next is not so perfect. The last meal I ordered included Included fried shrimp, shrimp and snow peas with shrimp egg foo young. The main issue was the shrimp and snow peas . This dish usually has snow peas, shrimp, celery, mushrooms, baby corn, carrots, and believe the name is water chestnuts. It is usually as real treat, but this time it looked like left overs. It had only about three pieces of thinly sliced carrots one piece of celery and no other vegetables except snow peas.
