A nostalgic trip back in time in Midtown Comics!…read more I hate to admit it, but I hadn't stepped foot inside a comic book store in over 20 years--mostly due to the lack of shops out in the suburbs. Being back in the city for a meeting gave me the perfect chance to take a nostalgic detour and relive a piece of my childhood. As a former NYC local, I was a little embarrassed that I almost missed the entrance! It's tucked away on the side of West 40th Street, up on the second floor. The moment you walk in, the nostalgia hits you immediately--even the distinct smell of the shop brought back so many great memories of my younger days. Since I was short on time, I wasn't able to explore the upper level, but browsing the first floor alone was overwhelming in the best way possible. It's amazing to see how far comics have come. I had to physically stop myself from grabbing everything on the shelves just so I wouldn't have to lug a heavy stack back to my hotel! I ended up picking up Black Star--a complete departure from the classic superhero titles I used to read, but the cover immediately caught my eye. I definitely need to carve out an entire day to come back and fully dive into everything they have. I just wish there were more places like this left! Whether you're hunting down exclusive pickups or just looking for a great new read, I highly recommend stopping by.

From new issues to back log, everything has a neat and tidy place, making browsing quick and effortless. They place a variety of mid-level rare comics ranging in price from $15 to $40 near most of the comic shelves, which make for both excellent window shopping and dangerous impulse purchases. They have a nice selection of old and new comics, mostly from DC and Marvel, so Gotham might not be great if you're looking for more obscure or niche comic brands. Similarly, this is a comic shop first, and things like games have a small presence. I also have to mention the staff working at Gotham. The employee was super helpful, going above and beyond in looking for issues that I couldn't immediately find. He made my visit feel extra special. The only downside with this comic shop is that it isn't located closer to my home! Otherwise I'd go there every week!

But if you're in the area and you're in a pinch for that new Batman comic, this is your place. It was a hot day when I visited and they just had a couple floor fans running. Nothing gets me out of a comic book shop faster than sweaty hands on loose/unbagged books. And for parking, expect to circle around a couple times (plan to pay for a meter). Such a cute store set in the heart of the theater district. Downstairs has lots of anime. Upstairs…read morefiction and non-fiction. I love that it's a store where you can sell and purchase. I feel the prices were very reasonable, even though I saw some comments about people saying the books are overpriced. No one bothered us when we spent quite a while looking through the various shelves and it felt like a very calm environment in a busy city. Left with a few books so the trip was a hit.

Buying and Selling at Book Off What a cool store. So much to…read moresee. Unfortunately, it is lousy to sell at and expensive to buy at. First, Selling. I brought in three statue items unopened in the original packaging. I checked on ebay for what the items sold for (not asking price but sold price) and it added up to about $600, I lugged the items over there and had to leave them there because they wouldn't get to them right away. The people/kids working there were very nice. I went to have lunch and got the text to return, and they are offering $150. So I picked up the items and turned down the offer. Again, they were very nice, it's just I wasn't willing to accept 25% of the value. I figured at worst it would be 50%. But I am better off getting closer to the actual price on ebay. Now, Buying. Lots of very expensive and exiting things to get, and I didn't have time to price check things so much, but my son is into the Nintendo switch and i spotted a used Marvel VS Capcom game he might like. It was $34.95. But just in case, I pulled up Amazon and looked the game up. A brand new one costs $21.79. So it would have been a terrible idea for me to buy it there. I guess if you are leaving work and need a quick gift, you might stop in and pay too much for an item. If you are in real trouble and don't have time to wait for an Ebay sale, you might consider selling your collectables for 25% the value, this place might come in handy.
