    Popovers and Peach Salad
    Stephanie K.

A maiden voyage exploring the dinner menu for Austin Restaurant Week, and another reason to love F&D, a chef-driven restaurant known for "foreign-inspired food, domestically sourced." In my experience, this equates to the best of both worlds - comfort food on a seasonally-driven menu with some key staples that keep me coming back for more. Atmosphere is cozy, although the details in presentation and service are first-class. We started with the signature Gruyère & Black Pepper Popovers - light & rich at once, with an original and slightly sweet charred onion butter. Also exceptional: a garden salad with mixed greens, end-of-season peaches, goat cheese, and smoked walnuts - perfectly balanced in a light vinaigrette. The Ham & Gruyère Croquettes took everything I love about grilled cheese and packaged it up in a few elegant bites (Dijon cream sauce for a zesty grown-up finish). My highlight (and Achilles when dining - also judging by very high standards) was the handmade Nduja Radiatorre - pasta perfectly al denté, clinging to a rich and savory sauce with back-end heat of spicy sausage, contrasted with sweet fresh corn, exquisite. To finish - a Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake. Fudgy, studded with pecans, hitting all the high-notes just like Grandma makes it. Laura was delightful to share time with, taking care of every detail, explaining the nuances of food preparation, and making us feel at home. Trouble is deciding whether to come back for brunch or dinner!

We always really enjoy coming here. We usually walk in for brunch and find seating right away! The popovers are great, but huge. You can order just 1! The space can get a little loud, but they also have an outdoor space for seating that's covered and heated (in the winter). My favorite dish is the steak for brunch. Check out on the weekend!

In town for business, met a few coworkers here for dinner tonight after someone mentioned seeing F&D on Triple D awhile ago. About a 25min drive from my hotel but WELL WORTH THE EFFORT! This place is fantastic. Very small indoor seating with some patio dining available. Staff was great. Fully explained the menu and made a few recommendations based of local favs. We ordered 2x popovers and they were very good. Perfectly cooked to a golden finish but soft and warm on the inside. I did not try the gnocchi since I devoured a full popover but my table mates ate that all up as well. My steak was cooked exactly as ordered and was amazingly tender with a perfect crust along the edges. Honestly, wouldn't have been surprised if the steak was $50+ (it was NOT!). My total bill was $44 for 1 order of popovers and the steak. Definitely worth the drive and the money. Having the bar/kitchen open is a pretty cool vibe as you can watch them prepare the food right in front of you. Tables were tightly packed since the space is small but it didn't feel cramped. Still have enough privacy to enjoy conversation without talking over other groups. Parking is a bit tough but I got very lucky (black Mustang was my rental right up front) Would absolutely make a reservation at F&D again!!

This place is super cute with qualityyyyy food and wine. It's an open kitchen concept, which is really cool. I recommend happy hour for cheaper prices, as it is fairly expensive - perfect for a date night. Their Tuesday deal (oysters and 1/2 off wine bottles) is amazing. Parking is limited on site but there is plenty of neighborhood parking.

Need to do my yearly review for one of my favorite spots. Can confirm all of 2024 that this spot is very consistent in quality. The steak and eggs brunch is what we come here for. It never disappoints. It's just the right amount of food to not leave hungry or too full. The popovers are our other go-to. They are addictive, the butter is crack dip. The bread is perfectly fluffy. Service is always super attentive and kind. They changed the waiting area some. They still have the outdoor seating which is where we sat this time. Love F&D and hope they stay around for a good long time! They get a Michelin star in my eyes.

It's been a while since I've been to F&D and was glad I got to try it again this past weekend for brunch with some out of town friends who were visiting Austin. Our waiter, Davy (like Crockett) was very helpful and accomodating. We forgot to tell him to split the bill upfront so he was able to do it after and even took some photos of us after we finished. :-) We enjoyed the pop overs, pancakes, benny, etc. It was the first time I'd had eggs benedict with collard greens! Yum. We had one issue with lukewarm coffee but that was corrected quickly. We sat outside in the covered patio area and the weather was overcast but pleasant. I look forward to future brunches and meals here!

I went to their parking lot pig roast celebrating their 15th anniversary - these people know how to throw a party! The pork was so good, the sides were incredible - especially the potato salad. I love that they do farm to table nose to tail, and they have a lovely local neighborhood vibe. Everyone was so friendly too. Can't wait to go back to try their regular food, I've heard their ice cream is bomb.

This place is small, warm, and intimate. We came for happy hour, but there wasn't one tonight! Instead, we got tasty dollar oysters, half price wine, and the three course mushroom sampler. It was oh so good. The mushrooms were foraged by some of the chefs on a trip to a west coast volcano and crafted into a lobster bisque, carbonara, and a white chocolate mousse. The bisque was a little sweet and creamy smooth like a butternut squash soup. The pasta was my favorite- cheesy and savory (I all but licked the plate). I don't usually love desserts, but this one was perfect- the crumbled honeycomb and crisp mushroom contrasted nicely with the light, fluffy mousse. A real treat. I loved sitting at the chef station, trying to match the menu descriptions to the YUM assembled in front of us. The chefs were busy at their craft but still friendly and responded kindly to some of our commentary. I recommend reserving that space unless you don't want to know how much butter goes into making your food decadent. Everything looked special, even the ice cream and Texas sheet cake (we were shocked!). I can't wait to go back to try...everything!

$1 East Coast Oysters! This was just our first dozen! Loved them so much we ordered ANOTHER dozen!!
    Emily B.

Never have I ever eaten raw oysters on the half shell before I came to this place. Me and one of my girlfriends came here to take advantage of their $1 east coast oysters Tuesdays, and let me tell you... holy wow. We were both SO nervous (as one would be never having SLURPED an oyster before), but our waiter, good ole Frank Rodriguez the third (pretty sure that was his name), soothed our anxieties. His opening line of a dad joke calmed our nerves and got us good and ready for the heaven that we were about to consume. WOW. How easy it was to order a dozen... then another... we probably could have kept going if we didn't have somewhere else to be soon after!! He then gave us his sweet words in the form of an expertly performed Shakespeare quote, and we were on our way. You can SURE BET I'll be back (on a Tuesday, no doubt), Foreign & Domestic. Hope you got at least 30 oysters ready for me when I get there

    Steak tartare

Some meals really resonate and cause you to think about them well after they are finished. My dinner at @fndaustin did just that. The mission of @fndaustin is to produce foreign-inspired dishes that are domestically sourced. Get it? Foreign & Domestic! It is small inside, but the food smells are mouthwatering! We were seated outside and our server, Gerson, was a pleasure. His enthusiasm for all the food on the menu and, in particular, our choices, was infectious and we could not wait to try our dishes. Had to get their famed Gruyere Popovers which is served with an amazing onion butter schmear. It's hard, but be careful not to fill up on those! We also ordered the steak tartare, a dish I was trying for the first time. It was well-seasoned and was served with beautiful lattice chips but they were too flimsy for the meat. We used that delicious popover as our scoop! For our entrees, my son ordered the Whey Braised Goat Neck with malfadine pasta, dill and pepitas for crunch. It was so tasty and rich. I ordered the Duck Confit Cassoulet with white beans, garlic sausage and fresh herbs. The duck leg and thigh quarter was so tender, and the beans and sausage below was the definition of a comfort food! for dessert, my son got the Juniper Pot de Creme with cocoa crumble and I got the Carrot Cardamom non-dairy ice cream. Both were fantastic and unique flavors that showcased the talents and vision of @fndaustin! It is a meal I am dreaming about a week later!

Crispy pork and grits sunday brunch
    Stephanie W.

I keep driving by here and they always have the cutest vibes with their outdoor tent patio seating and fairy lights, and I'm so glad I FINALLY went! They only do brunch on Sundays, but everything was so delicious from the shared fresh baked goods ($5-10): gruyere and pepper popovers, cardamom cinnamon roll, zucchini bread with lime creme fraiche, and the mains ($14-20): frittata, focaccia benny (YUM), fried pork grits (a little rich and salty), and light and fluffy berry lemon ricotta crepe. The service was also amazing and really sensitive/observant of our needs (when to bus plates, but not too early-- wiping down tables when needed etc), while also not being "OVER" present Honestly, considering our table got all this with coffee / juice and left STUFFED, $30 after tax and tip seemed like a pretty good deal. I definitely want to come back here for their dinner and dessert options some other time!!

    Tomato Leaf Risotto

I came here for dinner on Saturday evening with my parents. A member of the Eater 38 for Austin, I was excited to try this North Loop restaurant. It's located in a quirky neighborhood, and parking is limited street/parallel parking. I'm not a local, but as a transplant this area feels like it lives up to the "weird" moniker as it doesn't appear over-developed. F&D is one of Austin's original farm-to-table restaurants, so that's fitting. Reservations are highly recommended, and they have a couple of bar seats as well. My favorite appetizers were the Texas Peach Salad and Miso Butter Gnocchi. The featured Gemelli pasta was not a crowd favorite. I ordered the tomato leaf risotto, which was just okay. The flavor reminded me a lot of a pasta I've had before that I found pungent, but the texture was great and I absolutely loved the peeled organic tomatoes at the end. I tried the market fish and the short rib campanelli, with the latter giving me a better taste than the risotto. The highlight of the meal was definitely the desserts. We got the creme brulee and 2 scoops of ice cream (juniper/olive oil + carrot/cardamom) to share. Their creme brulee is so unique, with sesame and pear flavors. And finally the juniper/olive oil ice cream is something you'd want to savor forever and re-order each time you come to F&D, or however long it remains on their menu!

Posted up here for brunch with a 12:30 Counter Reservation. Waiter was spot on, excellent service. Food took over 45 minutes to come out, which based on the simplicity of dishes ordered is a little much. Decent burger, curious on the meat/ground mixture they are using.. The Popovers with charred onion butter is your must order here! Tasty! One issue is the Head Chef kept berating the cooks which when they looked up at the people sitting at the counter made for an uncomfortable environment. Another notable mark is that we asked for salt and pepper which came in nifty little holders and a small spoon, individual sized portions.. the salt was packed in which required a combination of spoon and finger grabbing to season appropriately. Long story short there was a waiters hand that reached over and grabbed both containers of salt and pepper and placed them on another persons table to use....

Rosé Gosé (note accents) is in an unassuming Airport Blvd location (right next to Jewboy Burgers, an Austin favorite). It is run by a couple from Belarus that came here right after Covid to open up a restaurant, with a sister in Minsk. Defying expectations, the menu is not Balkan at all. If anything, there is a strong Asian influence with poke bowls and a lot of seafood. But the menu also offers beef tartare on their raw bar menu, as well as a steak offering and grilled chicken. It's a diverse and adventurous menu, all the way from small plates to hefty mains and vegetable sides. For the dessert, try the pavlova, a meringue confection stuffed with coconut mousse and topped with lime sorbet and a grapefruit slice sidecar. Everything is superbly presented, and unquestionably fresh and healthy without veering into twigs and berries territory. The cocktail menu is also playful, with a lot of nontraditional glassware and slight spins on popular drinks; their version of a Paloma uses prosecco instead of a splash of soda. The servers are all dressed in rosé jumpsuits and very attentive. The space is amiable and elegant without being pretentious. The table spacing is a little close, so that conversations carry between guests. The table setting has some nice touches, like the little wooden bench that holds your fork and knife off the table. In European fashion, water can be asked for but it won't be served with ice. Plan on taking your time and enjoying course after course.

They recommend consuming the cheeses within 7 days of opening. It's just my husband and me in the household, so finishing a whole package of cheese in a week's time could be daunting. Speaking of the brie, it wasn't my favorite of the selection I received, which was a curated collection of Lorie's from Shark Tank. With this place coming up on almost 500 Yelp reviews and sitting at four+ stars, that says something. There's only about six parking spaces available in front of the restaurant, otherwise you'll have to park in some other retail spaces further away. Inside it's quite small and intimate with about a dozen tables on the floor and 8 chairs at the bar. They do post some daily specials on the board when you walk in or you can stick to the menu. They do have a wine menu, but it's only limited to 22 choices at 2-3 times retail. We started off with some fried cheese ravioli and calamari. I loved the light breading on the calamari rings and no tentacles were included. My main course of chicken Parmesan was some of the best I've ever had. However, there was really only one objective thing wrong with Gino's on 51st street. Everything else was a matter of personal taste. Personal tastes can vary in what one wants to see in an American Italian restaurant. * * * The only objective fail was a fried calamari appetizer. The fry job was not good and the calamari were tough and not too tasty. People don't go to Italian restaurants just to get fried calamari, even though it is a common enough appetizer. * * * The one objective WOW WOW WOW was their chocolate cake. Steve W and I split one of these babies. It is kept in the refrigerator and served ice cold. The stuff is totally addictive. No matter how the rest of your meal goes, The chocolate cake will atone for all sins. * * * Now for the matters in dispute. The big question is do you like your American Italian tomato forward or tomato restrained? I grew up in Boston in the 1950s and 1960s where all the Italian food was tomato restrained. This included the famous Italian houses in the North End and our family's favorite, Simeone's in Cambridge. The recipes at Gino's could have come out of any those establishments. This explains Steve W's vigorous thumbs up. * * * American Italian in Philadelphia is tomato forward. Boston has evolved into a tomato forward town although exceptions do exist in particular houses. After I graduated high school and went out in the world, I discovered tomato forward. (Including, in Manhattan, a Legendary Spaghetti Caruso which was tomato forward with chicken livers. Sarah Vaughan was singing gospel to the diners. Now THAT was one meal I will never forget!) Once I discovered tomato forward, there was no going back. Whenever I cook Italian, I cook tomato forward. Whenever I encounter tomato restrained, I go "That's Nice, Dear." * * * Steve W.'s chicken parmigiana and my cioppino were both tomato restrained. I make a killer cioppino myself (although I have been bested by more than one West Coast seafood establishment.) Cioppino needs to be tomato forward all the way - and when you get down right to it, totally heavy-handed with the tomato. Needing tomato was especially important at Gino's where the seafood was on again off again. (Scallops and clams were legitimately superb. The shrimp like the calamari, not so much.) So I enjoyed part of my meal. * * * Fortunately, Steve W. is a dazzling conversationalist with a wealth of knowledge about a wide range of topics. So the dinner was marvelous, when I thought less about my food and more about the ideas he was putting forward. And there was that cake. So as a total experience, the night was five stars. * * * However, if you are going without Steve W., Then watch yourself on the menu. Something like an Alfredo or a Piccata might be a better main dish call. That - and be sure to order dessert. (Heh heh)
