This old place has been resting on its reputation and now that a new home is opposing across the street Park Lane is waking and dressing up. It's renovating its lobby and dining hall is next. It's about time. Elevators have been promised to be fixed for several years and only two of the three are operating at any given time. Management has been cutting costs and staffing levels to the point it is hard to get the help they promise in their contracts. Some of the caregivers are sweet and some are just sleepwalking through their shift. It must be hard to deal with often cranky old people all day. Tough gig. The independent living is the best offering here. Assisted living is okay and the memory care is below par. Management doesn't deliver the level of care they promise at that level.

The food is awful with some of the worst tasting and poorly prepared food I've ever tasted. No attention is paid to balanced meals or special needs diets. Laundry service is an absolute joke. If someone can be found to wash clothes or bedding, it may take 24 hours or more to have it returned. The longer it takes to be returned the more likely it will be lost. Clothing will quickly deteriorate because no attention is paid to separating colored from whites and high heat is used to dry everything. On the bright side, the campus is beautiful, cleaning is skillfully handled, and there is an engaged activities director. Residents are friendly and easy to get to know.

I am so happy I decided on Canterbury Woods. Their nursing personnel are their greatest asset. I had a complicated med administration schedule with multiple overlapping medical diagnoses that would have caused havoc at a facility that wasn't as patient-centered and flexible. A culture of respect and care seemed to be strong at every level of the organization's structure. I observed administrators frequently interacting with staff and patients . The environment was homey, not clinical or stark. There were some oddities-such as the location of the shower facilities, but these were comparatively minor quirks. There was a bright activity room that encouraged patient interaction and an adjacent sunny flower filled patio available for patients. I was struck by the level and quality of staff-patient interactions and noted that the staff wasn't permanently attached to computers but focused on patients and their needs. A tech from CHOMP comes once a week to do blood draws, the in-house physician read my file before she saw me on her "rounds" She was observant, sensitive, listened , was compassionate, and did a good job coordinating my care. Some of the other highlights? The OT and PT staffs are superior. The food is incredible, and there is a set "comfort food" menu available for every meal service if the options on offer aren't appealing.
