I had some free time while in Glendale on a Thursday, so I Googled things to do in the area. Forest Lawn was the top recurring item, so I decided to give it a look. The wide gates were open for visitors to enter, and there was parking lined just on the right side next to the buildings. I had read online that a number of personalities happened to be interned here, so I decided to pay my respects. I followed a guide that I found online for things for which to keep an eye out while there. I started in the Northeast corner by the Court of Freedom. It was scenic and serene. I paused by the tall George Washington statue and then entered the Freedom Mausoleum. One of the employees was replacing the flowers for one of the tombs and she greeted me kindly and left me to my own business. Most of the employees had a certain gravitas befitting their environment without being standoffish. There were workers scattered throughout the memorial ensuring that the grounds were maintained to honor those there. I went to the Hall of the Crucifixion where there was no exhibition going on, so I wandered in alone to look at the works of art. Upon entering the hall of the painting itself, I was in awe. It was gigantic. I looked it up, and it is listed as being the world's largest religious painting at 195 feet long and 45 feet high. I exited to the right and passed through the Forest Lawn Museum which had an odd range of pop art icons, such as photos or paintings of celebrities to an actual Easter Island Moai, and then it ended through the gift shop, which felt odd in a cemetery. The course of the road took me past James Stewart's grave to the Great Mausoleum. The security employee greeted me and I explored a bit on my own. The area for the public was pretty limited, but one can see the Last Supper, a stained glass representation of Da Vinci's Last Supper, about equal in size. It was a beautiful piece. All of the statues in that hall, imitations of other famous works, were beautiful as well. My last stop was to L. Frank Baum's grave. I grew up reading the Wizard of Oz and its whole series; when I had no one with whom I could spend time, those books were there. He did not have a plot that really stuck out like some other famous people, but it had a great view of the Great Mausoleum behind it. I am not a religious person nor particularly spiritual, so, from my standpoint, this would be a great place to take a walk or to read or reflect. The Christus statue area, near the David statue, is a lovely place if you like the sound of running water. read more

This is Glassell Park's beautiful cemetery overlooking all of Glassell Park. I've always wanted to come to the cemetery... we have golf carts coming down to the local stores to pick things up for people all the time. The lawns are so well manicured. The ornate gates and massive spouting water cranes draw me in. Inside you can find beautiful engraved graves, tombs, places to put flowers, lanterns, alcohol, and other mementos. The main church is just extraordinary. I actually don't think it's a church but is a crematory. It's beautiful. I feel like I'm at the Getty's Museum. The view at the cemetery is great. Downtown Los Angeles, lush greenery, and the lit-up cross at the hospital. It's beautiful even when it rains, even when lost, even when you're told to put your recorder away when in the church. I will never forget such a beautiful cemetary. They were even nice enough to let me in after-hours. There also seems to be a gift shop and it's quaint how next to the cranes in the lake there's a bench only for two. I can't wait to see it again this summer! read more

Yes, sort of weird to Yelp about a cemetery, but this is more than that. It's a truly peaceful and beautiful place with miles of rolling hills and green grass. It's so beautiful, you almost forget that it's a burial place for the dead. There are always a few people walking/jogging, as well. There are lots of beautiful art pieces/statues, and so far we've had good experiences with all of the staff here as well. I'm actually really surprised at one Yelper who described this place as "disturbing," with a Disneyland type of aura because it's too "perfect." How is that a bad thing? Have you been to other cemeteries where the grass is brown and crunchy? I'm glad the lawns are green and gorgeous, and there are beautiful works of art and rolling hills. I'm glad for the striving-for-perfection aspect of the memorial park. It's what keeps it looking beautiful and pristine. You might not see the park as having any real personality, perhaps because of this, but if you've looked around at the older areas, you'll see that it's interesting and creepily nostalgic. Anywho, I find it very peaceful and lovely. It's much, MUCH nicer than the Hollywood Hills one. The churches are also sweet and full of charm. I also like reading about all the famous people that are resting here, like Clark Gable (love him). It's just sort of interesting to know.. read more

FLM has changed quite a bit over the years...mainly making more spaces for the deceased. I absolutely love the fact at how peaceful this place is...if it wasn't a cemetery, it would be a great place to come to collect your thoughts and look at the beauty surrounding you. My mom was buried here almost 20 years ago and the lawns have always been maintained really well. The flower shop is definitely more expensive and I normally stop by the flower shop on the corner, before making a right headed towards FLM (sorry...I'm horrible with remember street names, I can only recall directions). That flower shop is less than half a mile away from the main entrance. Anywho, the reason why I am docking one star is because the landscaping work people have made my trips to see my mom, the most uncomfortable thing I've ever experienced. I used to go pretty regularly back when I was in California and recall on several occasions, the landscaping men whistling, yelling, and staring at me while they worked or drove by. So...you're probably thinking, 'why didn't you complain?' Well, me being soft spoken and feeling utterly disgusted and like a cheap whore, I felt as though I just wanted to GTFO! I really can't justify taking off more stars because of that because like I said, this place is such a peaceful place for the deceased and although the landscaping people are somewhat of a reflection of FLM, they are just a tiny piece of their purpose. I also do have to admit, the last couple times I visited, I didn't leave feeling like a cheap whore by the landscaping people. read more

I'm a "cemetery enthusiast" as some people put it. I have visited this cemetery twice while visiting LA. This is a HUGE cemetery so if you go like I do to wander and take pictures you will be happy, but make sure you give yourself enough time. This is a well maintained cemetery with a nice view. read more

This review is solely for the flower department, went to buy some flowers for my husbands great grandmother and the lady who helped us was completely rude. The way she looked at us and her tone were completely unacceptable. We asked her for a blank card and pen and she never answered and just place both things in front of us, she didn't answer to our "thank you". She looked miserable to be helping us. This is a place we come to visit our loved ones, it is emotionally hard as it is and to have someone with such poor customer service is not okay. On my receipt it says her name was Jessica, she was wearing all gray suit and had red hair. Completely horrible behavior. Please address this kind of behavior. read more

Some of this beautiful cemetery is open to the public including the section with the Last Supper window. We came to see it and were treated very poorly by the female security guard working at the entrance (Saturday, Sept 10). She treated us like children that were trying the vandalize the place. I know they need to keep hoards of tourists out and respect and honor the people buried here but there is no reason to have such rude people at the entrance. I read other reviews and many others have had similar experiences. Forest Lawn, you are epically beautiful, but get nicer employees!! read more

My review only concerns the ease of finding a grave. Today, I went there in search of my 4th grade teacher who died in 1993. She is buried in the Cathedral Slopes section. The receptionist noted that she is buried in Section 17. And guess what? There was no 17 painted on the curb nor anywhere else to let me know just where Section 17 was! I got so frustrated, I called the office and they sent a security guard up to assist me. When he got there, he said, "It's going to be tough because I'm not a grave finder!" He too lamented the fact that the cemetery does not do a good job of putting reference numbers on the curbs. I suppose it's because it "detracts" from the beauty and serenity. It's similar to not putting on the front license plates for a nice sports car or SUV in order to not ruin its looks! Then a maintenance man saw me and the guard searching, so he came to help. He found the grave for me in about 5 minutes! It was a huge section! Beautiful cemetery, but...! I had the same problem with Rose Hills Whittier just an hour previously before arriving at Forest Lawn Glendale.Why can't cemeteries do a better job of making finding graves easier for visitors???!!! read more

My bf recently passed away and we chose Forest Lawn Glendale because they offered all services under one roof. We were assigned Jean Kim as our service coordinator. Jean was AMAZING!! She was very knowledgeable, helpful but also compassionate and caring. She treated us like family right from the start. Jean always made herself available to us and helped us plan a beautiful service within our budget. Hopefully I don't have to plan any other funerals in the near future but if I do, it will definitely be with Jean at Forest Lawn. read more

Although there is a Forest Lawn a mile away from my house and the Glendale one is an hour away, this was the designated burial place for my Grandma. I've been to several funerals and Forest Lawn Glendale has provided the best experience. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The 4 viewing rooms were comfortable and updated, unlike other funeral homes which felt creepy. Although the chapel could not fit my huge family, the service was prompt and organized. Sharon was so accommodating and understanding during this stressful, emotional time. Every employee we encountered at Forest Lawn was friendly. read more

absolutely gorgeous! i'm glad my grandfather bought a plot in a private garden in a cemetary that looks like wedding site (he bought it in 1990!). i know i'll love stopping by, because it feels so peaceful here. and he's resting in such a beautiful spot, high above glendale. i think it's quite expensive to be buried here now, but i'm glad my grandfather invested in such a beautiful site. this memorial park features many unique areas and a gorgeous church on-site! we drove through the arch way, and i was so impressed. read more

Don't know too much about the financing except that it's as low as $38/mth . But landscape-wise, Forest Lawn in Glendale is simply awe-inspiring. With it's majestic hills and graceful statues...it's truly a resting place for the deceased. Sometimes staff will be on the slopes checking in on family. One time we were offered a flower and the gentleman even polished our grandmothers grave plate FREE. It's really well maintained there. read more

My sister passed away and Ron Benson and his staff did a great job going over items and making it go smooth. Go to Costco.com for casket and go to LA downtown flower market a couple of days before and buy flowers and have them delivered. Saved over $700 on casket and it was beautiful and flowers were half price. read more

Yes, yes, yes the grounds are beautiful. But have you ever had to deal with the personnel regarding a service or internment? Our wonderful Mother passed away on route to California in a strange city. Although she and her husband (who is already in Forest Lawn) had plots since the 1950's we were offered no recommendations for a funeral parlor in that city to help with arrangements. Forest Lawn asked us to make an appointment to talk to them on the phone whenever we had a simple question. We could never get hold of the same director twice. They were consistent in one area - not being helpful! We were not allowed to have the privilege of renting the chapel for $750 an hour because the cremation took place elsewhere. But yes the chapel was available at the time we wanted. The final straw, dear Mother sat on someones desk for two weeks despite the fact that all the paperwork was done. I could elaborate, and go on and on, but I just want the buyer to beware. Our experience was much less than desirable. read more

Absolutely beautiful place. We went to an 8:30am appt today to figure out services for my father. Unfortunately, the person, whose name was Ron, with whom we had an appt today was not compassionate at all, did not even make eye contact, did not even extend his condolences to us. Very stoic. It was all about business for him. It turned out that there was no availability for us - probably a sign. Although we loved this place, my father would not have wanted his service here due to the poor and insensitive customer service by this person (note: the front desk was great). read more

Okay...I haven't been a part of this business in the context that one might assume but I've visited here several times. Now..you might not be into just hanging around graveyards, but I do. This is the most beautiful, cleanest and peaceful cemetery I've ever been to. If you roll in first thing in the morning it's awesome...you feel so alone and it's so quiet...just fantastic. The grounds are very well maintained and the groundskeepers will offer bright smiles. I would offer a word of caution though...the squirrels are gigantic. HUGE. And squirrels scare me sometimes so don't mess with these guys! The rodent mafia will find their way to you! read more

I am never, ever, ever gonna be buried at one of these mega cemeteries. I have reiterated this countless times to my oldest son (our family has interesting conversations). This is because there will inevitably be a wake or viewing, they will never get my makeup right, and I'll be damned if anyone is going to see me at my worst (it doesn't get much worse than dead). But I love *visiting* cemeteries! We started by visiting the museum (see my review under Forest Lawn Museum for that experience) and then decided that perusing the properties' residences was a must. Some of my favorite memories are at cemeteries when I am just visiting and not attending a funeral, and this was another to add to the coffers of my mind. We drove to the mausoleum, but decided not to enter as the older standing gravestones were beckoning us to traipse down the hill. I plan on returning for that, because I do want to see the Last Supper stained glass window. But the cemetery itself is full of beautiful structures and intriguing plots. There is one of a Civil War veteran, mausoleums for some well-known local families (Cole, for instance), several gravestones dating back to 1906, and the final resting place of L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" series. It is a serene experience, and one that the whole family thoroughly enjoyed. Even if you don't *have* to, I highly recommend visiting, if for no other reason to get away from the hustle for a second. The un-living are extremely polite companions. read more

I grew up in Glendale and drove by here often when I used to visit my grandmother at the convalescent home nearby. When she passed away in 1992, she joined my grandfather in the Great Mausoleum (where many different celebrities are buried such as Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor and where you have to be a relative in order to get inside). Don't even think about celebrity grave hunting here as security keeps a pretty close watch on the place via cameras inside the Great Mausoleum and patrols that drive around. You know when you are at the Great Mausoleum when you see the MJ fans outside and all of the flowers with cards that have Michael Jackson's name on them. I had to be escorted inside by security once because of these people as they try to follow people inside which is a little creepy). While trying to locate my uncle's ground plot recently, I walked around and was amazed at how clean and well maintained the grounds are. A security guard saw that I needed help and took time to drive me to the location where my uncle was buried which was really nice of him. The lawns are very green and the buildings are in great condition despite the age of some of them (the park was originally built in the early 1900's). When you are here, you don't feel like you are at a cemetery because there are no tall grave markers. Instead, there are memorial plaques and family monuments. There are a few different churches on site where funeral services are held and even marriages (former President Reagan was married here). If you want to buy flowers for a gravesite, they have a flower/gift shop by the front gate. There is a lot of beautiful art in the mausoleums and around the park. If you want to find out more about the artwork or about Forest Lawn, check out the on site museum or one of the many different cultural events that the park hosts. I spent a great deal of time working with people in the Transfers Department (took over ownership of the family plot) and the Memorial Tablets department (trying to obtain a military headstone for my uncle) and each time I called or stopped by, they were very kind and not pressuring to buy anything. They even prepared all of the necessary paperwork to simplify things for me. If you are looking for a place to spend eternity, this is the place. read more

What a cool place...and I don't normally say that about cemetaries, but it's so much more! The view from the museum on top of the hill is beautiful and it's so peaceful up there. I only saw a small part of the park but it was a lovely walk just meandering through the different areas with statues and pretty landscaping and people's tributes to their loved ones. The Rudyard Kipling area was particularly interesting, with the section set aside for youth and the poem "If." The park is truly gigantic and I would love to see more of it except finding your way around is not an easy task! read more

A very well-maintained memorial with beautiful sloping hills and clear views of Glendale. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore here, but most of the main statuary (if you're here to see The Mystery of Life, the replica of the David, etc.) is located along the northern side of the cemetery. If you have some extra time, definitely check out the Forest Lawn Museum, too, currently showcasing Chicano art. Free with lots of parking. read more

Saw a post about Forest Lawn on 365 L.A. blog and went on a Saturday morning to check out the museum. They have a small but beautiful collection of sculpture, coins, and stained glass along with a few paintings. They also currently have a huge collection of Goya etchings that runs until August 1. I could've spent the entire day poring over these humorous little masterpieces, but we wanted to wander around the grounds a bit as well. The David replica is quite impressive, as is the mausoleum. We didn't have a chance to see The Last Supper window, but I think a return trip is likely. Free admission is a bonus! read more

This place is beautiful! If you don't have any loved ones resting here and are just into weird things like me, come here for the beautiful atmosphere and a nice walk. This place looks like Hogwarts! Used to like it here but almost got hit by speeder here 3 months ago while walking and then today my car was almost side swiped by a car that was treating it like a highway. I beeped so he would stop and he didn't. This is not new here, and too many people drive fast here and I usually pull over for them, but the speeding doesn't stop. and I finally called and complained and security just said they already have people patrolling and they "can't be everywhere at once." And you are supposed to report a license plate but the guys who almost hit me here drove by me fast and how are you supposed to grab a license plate while trying to save your car or your body and collect yourself and they are long gone? I am not going to chase a car inside a cemetery. and I am shaking. So basically they are not going to anything different. If they have it handled, why still so many speeders? I am so tired of excuses from places that basically say they already have it under control and just shrug. They don't. And this is the forest lawn that is supposed to be calmer and more pleasant than the one in LA where people are going so fast and you have to run out of the way as you walk so as not to get hit. So I used to come to glendale to try and avoid that. Not anymore. This used to be my favorite place of peace to walk, but I am done. read more
