We booked our 3-night stay to celebrate our anniversary on Airbnb. Search for the Fairy Tale Cottage in Alexander, NC and tell her Taryn and Ted sent ya! Every little detail of our stay was perfect! The owner, Brookes, is one of the most accommodating hosts I've ever met. She had a fire set for us upon arrival, fresh flowers in the cabin, electric blanket and space heater cranked every night (we got lucky with beautiful weather in the 60's during our visit in February) and the most amazing breakfast delivered to our bed every morning. It's hard to pick a favorite part of our stay, but if pressed, it would likely be the breakfasts. We had blueberry biscuits with maple bacon on day 1, shredded pork with lime crema and a poached egg on ciabatta day 2 and chocolate chip orange zest French toast with sausage on day 3. All with fresh fruit every day. We wanted for nothing during our stay. Seriously. Somehow Brookes has thought of literally everything you might need for a comfortable stay. We wanted to roast marshmallows over the fire. Guess what? She had extendable roasting sticks waiting for us. We didn't want to brave the outdoor shower after dark but needed to freshen up. Never fear! Lavender wipes in the room. I need coffee within 10 minutes of waking up or it's not pretty. We made a fresh pot of what I think was hazelnut coffee in the room with the cleanest mountain water you'll ever taste (from the sink on our porch) every morning. She even had mini moos and sugar to go with it. The cabins have power so there is a hair dryer for the slightly high maintenance. I.E., me. Ted hurt his back and needed some pain relievers. There were even ibuprofens in the room, people! See what I mean? She thought of everything! If looking for unique, peaceful accommodations "off the grid" but still close enough to Asheville to stay busy during the day, look no further than Outlander Glam Camp. They are also dog friendly which is a huge plus for us. They are up on the mountain in the middle of the woods so it's nice and serene but only 15 minutes away from the middle of downtown. They have a huge spot of land that has plenty of nature to experience. They have different houses to stay in depending on how many people you have and the little area we were in has 2 other houses together and a communal fire pit and grill. We learned so much about the birds, their habitat and the history of the local area near Gatlinburg, TN and the Great Smoky Mountains. Keith Watson is an expert, yet he explained everything well for us beginners. By the end our second day we were recognizing birds by ear- a skill I thought was beyond us. Keith handled all the logistics of our tour. Picked us up early in the morning and took us to some beautiful places he had diligently scouted the day before. When he recommended we get up even earlier the second day to see the sunrise from the mountain ridge over the valley- we said yes! The tour was like birding with a knowledgeable friend and it was the highlight of our trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. I wish there was a Keith in every country. He is a good communicator, great guide, is friendly and has a good sense of humor. We feel blessed to have spent a couple of days seeing many birds we had never before seen with an expert who became a friend. A Perfect Personalized Day in Asheville!…read more Just returned from a short trip to Asheville with two friends, and instead of renting a car we decided to book a private, personalized day trip with Outta Asheville. Best decision we made! From the very beginning, Jacque was wonderful to work with. She promptly provided multiple itinerary options based on our interests, including restaurant suggestions and menus so we could plan ahead. She arrived right on time to pick us up at our hotel, and immediately made us feel comfortable and taken care of. Our day included a relaxing walk through the Arboretum, a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and visits to Pisgah Inn, Brevard , and Hendersonville. Throughout the entire experience, Jacque was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and seemed to know exactly where to take us to make the most of our time. Her van was stocked with thoughtful provisions, and she tailored the day to our interests and physical needs without us ever having to ask twice. She was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with -- warm, friendly, professional, and so accommodating. Then we headed over to hiwire brewing and Sam gave us an awesome brewery tour and the fries from the food truck out front helped to keep us going with the brews that were consuming. Not at all your typical B&B, this is a nice option for people who prefer something apart from…read moreruffles and lace. There are five theme rooms. While the Inn will not guarantee your first choice of room when you make your reservation, we were able to choose from three rooms upon arrival, which included our top two choices. I would guess most B&Bers don't prefer rustic decor, which is why our first choice, the Appalachian Trail Room, was still available. (The others are more luxe, such as the Parisian room or the Moroccan themed room). We loved our room, which is set off from the main house and looks like a log cabin. Tom is a gregarious innkeeper and makes lovely and thoughtful breakfasts. Breakfast is taken in common areas of the inn, such as the solarium or the library, on trays. We took ours into the solarium, where we had a nice view of the beautiful Japanese garden landscaping. I think people are put off by the complicated pricing structure (for instance, it is possible to book w/o spa treatments but it's hard to tell from the website) or the mystery surrounding the reservations process. It is true that some rooms do not have their showers (all have whirlpool tubs in-room) and that the shower for those rooms is located in a common area. However, I believe three of the rooms have a shower in-room as well; ours did.
