Before meeting up with friends, I always check the menu to avoid the embarrassment of spending the entire lunch hour agonizing over what to order. Going in to Forman's Whiskey Tavern, I had 5 choices from the menu that looked amazing to me: 1. TAVERN SALAD with manchego, apple, candied pecans, and a champagne vinaigrette. 2. GRILLED CHEESE sweetened with butternut squash and a sage brown butter. 3. TAVERN (Impossible) BURGER with avo, arugula, pickled onion, and honey mustard dressing. 4. BISTRO (Impossible) BURGER which is like the French Onion Soup of burgers on a challah bun. 5. PATTY MELT, but I'd let my carnivorous side indulge with beef vs. Impossible meat. Thankfully the menu special that greeted me at the front door reaffirmed my choice that I should choose a burger. The Weekday Special from 12-3pm: Any Burger or Sandwich, Side of Fries or House Salad, and a pop was just $16. Plus, the bartender encouraged me that the burgers are really good. So the TAVERN BURGER with Impossible meat, a side green salad, and a lemonade needed no coin toss for me to be decisive. Ordering my meal at the bar was easy, there was no line, and service was quick. I loved that it was chill for a mid-week lunch hour. However, I imagine it gets busy later on in the afternoon and during a non-holiday week. Most of LA was already heading out to campsites for the 4th of July week from what it seemed. Beyond the burger, I really loved the fun decor. Inside, it felt like a Southern Hunting Lodge with its trophies hanging on the wall. Outdoors, it had my kind of charm with its lush greenery, flowering blooms, rustic decor, and picnic-style benches that felt like you're in someone's backyard. I'm sure the big tree in the center helps make the twinkle lights amazing at night. Plus, if you bring your furry friend (service dog) then the outdoor patio is a nice place to chill, and there's a bowl of fresh water just for them. As for drinks, there are plenty of beer choices on tap from Old Rasputin Stout to IPAs. Malbec and Opolo Zin looked enticing too. Since this is a Whiskey Tavern, there are lots of options ranging from low to high-end spirits to choose from. I recommend you take a peek at their menu beforehand to avoid deliberating for a while before choosing the one that speaks to you. read more

Umm the hype about their burgers, nothing spectacular especially for that price. In&out is better, cheaper without the 18% service fee with minimal service. It's an English pub, you order at the bar, you get a number, they bring your food, that's it. Expensive, lack luster food tack on 18 - 25% for minimal service just seems wrong. So much to like, where should I begin? I've been coming to Forman's for years. First off, they make some of the best Old Fashioned cocktails in LA. And they have at least half a dozen versions, all of which are tasty. If you've brought an appetite, you're in luck. Their burgers are delicious, also their chicken sandwiches, and their wings. From the outside, it's hard to tell that Forman's has an awesome bar and outside patio. Inside, you'll find a full service bar with seating in the middle and on the sides. Specializing in whiskey, they also feature local brews from solid brewers like Paperback Brewing from Glendale. I tried the Bunny With a Chainsaw from Paperback - very smooth and easy drinking despite it being a double hazy IPA. If you're not into hoppy beers, this is the one for you. There were nine of us, so we used the outside patio area. Each table comes with its own QR code and you can have your own tab which makes it easy to order when you're in a large group. Lit up with outdoor patio lights with a cork oak tree in the middle, it's scenic enough with a casual, yet lively atmosphere. I ordered the fish tacos ($11) which came with two tacos, the fish itself was a frozen deep fried fillet, a bit on the tough side, however the rest of the taco fillings were fresh. If you need something to chase away your Sunday night blues, you've got to get down to Toluca Lake and come to Forman's. This is an upper crust, high-end whiskey tavern with excellent food and sumptuous alcohol and a beautiful beer garden. There is really no place like it. I just sat outside on a beautiful Sunday evening in the balmy weather, with a cocoa and coffee infused old-fashioned with a fig in my hand, watching the game and savoring a fried chicken salad with chunks of avocado and sliced red grapes in a buttermilk ranch dressing. I had generous bites of my husband's Hickory burger and seasoned fries. Service is friendly and the setting is relaxed and comfortable. You won't find more creative whiskey cocktails anywhere. Food is outstanding. It is elevated far beyond your usual bar. I stopped by Forman's Whiskey Tavern for a quick drink on a Friday evening. Located in an area of LA with popular nightlife, I was lucky to find a parking spot behind the bar. They have a couple of spots dedicated to the bar in the surface lot. You will have to walk to to the front, the back door isn't open. If all of the spots are taken, metered parking is your best bet. Ambiance (4/5): My type of spot. A chill bar with some cool decor. They have a small patio out front. We sat inside at a booth/chair combo. They also have some high tops and some seats at the bar. Service (2.5/5): I ordered drinks at the bar and there was only one bartender working at a peak hour on a Friday. As you'd expect, it took 10 minutes or so to get my drink. The type of bar experience where you want to close out after ordering a drink, so you don't have to wait in line again. Food (N/A): I had dinner plans after, so it was just drinks for me. Drinks (3/5): Since Forman's is a whiskey tavern, as you'd expect, whiskey is the focus of the menu. Unfortunately for me, I'm not a whiskey guy. They do have a decent number of cocktails that use other spirits, but the vast majority of the cocktails were spicy. Again, bad luck for me, as I'm not a spicy cocktail kind of guy. Happy hour is from 2-6 where there select cocktails, wine beer and food items on the menu. Drinks are 6-9 dollars. The bar can get busy at this time. They do also have a patio area out back. They have cocktails, beer, and bites as well, but of the times I've been here, I've mostly gone to get pours of the different whiskeys they usually have on hand here at more than reasonable prices. The decor has kind of an equestrian stable theme (I think) The folks here have always been really friendly and fair in terms of serving you in the order you come up to the counter. I've been here later in the evening a couple of times, but it gets a lot more busy/crowded as it gets later. The vibe in the early evening and during the day on the weekend is chill usually. Great happy hour deals and bites. I got the charcuterie board here and it was nice. I've had some of the other small bites as well and all have been solid to great. Okay, if you read this far: I would say this is my favorite place in all of LA to drink whiskey. Part of me wants to gatekeep, but they deserve all the business they get. Not only do they have an excellent selection, but they consistently get some rare gems that are not necessarily white whale status, so the prices are still in the mid teens to low twenties for some really quality pours. They do have higher end rare bottles, but of course you're going to pay up for that. The fact that these ultra rare bottles are there is another bonus if you have the funds and you want to partake. All their burgers can be substituted with a veggie patty, which is an awfully good option, and all those burgers taste wonderful! They don't have servers here, you'll need to place your orders at the bar, which can get a little old for drinks when it's busy... But the bartender was very friendly and helpful navigating the menu. One of my favorite bars! It's such a cute place to hang out, whether you're sitting inside or relaxing on the back patio. The food is amazing, definitely not your typical bar food. My go-to is the turkey club, and it never disappoints. Drink selections are great too, and my personal favorite is the Smokey Irishman. The only downside is that you have to order at the bar, and on busy weekends the line can get pretty long, which makes it a little tough to reorder drinks.
