Good customer service and good drinks. Wish we stayed longer, but we came from a restaurant so we just wanted a drink and wind down. Really spacious and I like how it's not too loud.

Such a cute spot

Went on a Saturday night right before Christmas. Bar was very festive, even the bartenders had on cute festive outfits. They had a live DJ and it was popping. Bar food was served. I can't get over their mozzarella sticks. It was delicious. The drinks were very good too. Excited to go back to this chill vibe bar. And all the staff was very nice and attentive even with every table taken.

Stopped by this bar to visit some family friends from childhood. Nice bar, has a chill vibe. They also offer food, I had the smash burger, delicious! Also the mozzarella sticks are also delicious. Big space with comfy loft chairs at the corners for more intimate space. Service was awesome, bartender kept my cup filled and kept a conversation going. Free parking in the front. Just down the street from Universal studios theme park. Definitely recommend while in town.

The Catcher in the Rye was a controversial novel by J.D. Salinger. While there is nothing controversial about this friendly neighborhood bar, a literary theme is the central focal point. In fact, the cocktails are named after famous novels. The place has a low-key vibe and a laidback aesthetic. There's a little lounge section with books that you can read while enjoying a sip and a nibble and board games that you can play with a group of friends. I met up with some darling Yelp friends here for Happy Hour, which is daily from 5 pm - 7 pm. As soon as I walked in the door, I received a warm welcome from bartender Rayna. She had a wonderful personality and took great care of us. This is the type of place where you order at the bar, and someone will bring your food/drink to you. Rayna went above and beyond. Stepping out to personally walk over to our table in the back and check on us. I started with A Life in Lavender - a vibrant cocktail featuring Gin, lavender bitters, rosemary syrup, lemon juice, St. Germain, & Crème Yvette. It was absolutely delicious! The conversations at the table were engaging, so I ended up ordering another drink. This time Pearadise Lost was calling my name. This tasty concoction combined Absolute Pear Vodka with fresh pear, lime juice, vanilla simple, & soda. It was light & refreshing and packed a punch! My friends ordered food - Sliders, Artichoke Dip, Quesadilla, Chicken Tacos, Baby Green Salad. They each enjoyed their selections, and we all agreed that we would be back. *Parking lot in back & street parking.

Huckleberry Finn - $13 highly recommend

One of my favorite books as a teen by J.D. Salinger which made it very nostalgic for me. A neighborhood bar for 8 years just East of Cahuenga Blvd on Riverside Drive. Met a group of yelp friends for drinks and ended up staying for a few hours. Very friendly atmosphere with lots of games to play, great tunes in the background and drinks with catchy names from well known books. I had read a few reviews saying the food wasn't fabulous but I beg to differ. My chicken tacos and baby green salad were really good! Yes, a tad pricey for the salad ($14) but I thought the drinks were priced fairly and Rayna our bartender definitely didn't skimp on the liquor. She was very friendly and made a fabulous cocktail! It seemed like there were many regulars here which added to the comfy feeling. Great for large or small groups. There were lots of tables and a few comfy sofas. *Parking in the back as well as street parking.

I stopped by here on a Saturday around opening time, the beers are beers you can find at other bars. The cocktails are actually pretty good. The bartender was nice, she made me delicious cocktails. It's a nice chill vibe.

Huckleberry Fin cocktail. Yum. Not very sweet

Bartenders are great and personable! Drinks are yummy! I got the Huckleberry Fin and it wasn't too sweet at all which I really like. LGBTQ + friendly

It is the best place for karaoke, fantastic happy hour and a sweet homelike atmosphere. It's such a nice venue I'm going to throw a big comedy show on Tuesday, Sept. 16 2025! IG thedavidraibon for additional info. Great place for live entertainment right in Toluca Lake! Just between Noho and Burbank!!

Ask the Community - Catcher In the Rye

Is there a website with confirmed weekend hours? There is no formal website and the phone listed here is disconnected.

No website that I know of, but the hours on Yelp should be accurate. I was there a couple of months ago and the hours were as advertised on Yelp.

Are there new hours? We were just outside at 5pm on a Sunday as the sign outside said and there was no one inside and calls do not go through

They had a change of ownership and haven't updated all the information. A good number for them is 747-205-2428.

Is it kid-friendly?

No.

Is this place still open?

Yes, back to regular hours

Has the kitchen reopened yet?

Yes

Does this place get packed Friday nights ? And, do they take reservations?

I went early evening on a Friday and it wasn't packed, but a lot of people were still coming in. I'm sure later in the evening it would get packed. They play great music and it's a great place to hang out with friends!

Is there street parking near by?

I parked in the small lot in the back.

Is there a happy hour? and if so, what's on it?

Farts

Echoing what everyone else has been saying - the service is SO slow. It was about 45 minutes before we were able to order our second drink and our water glasses were empty. They have so many runners bringing the drinks out but only a few servers and, from the looks of it, one bartender (on a Saturday night - what?!). The server was saying he was trying to find a manager to help out but they were nowhere to be found. Clearly management is fine with these service times since they're still making $$$. The drinks were delicious, and I loved that there were heaters on the patio (though they did get very hot at times). Our server was so kind and brought us a celebratory drink. I do wish there were more explanations with the beverages, especially for the Paid Vacation as most people will not realize you're supposed to bite into the buzz button for the tingly sensation. I would come back, but need some time for my wallet to recover first, haha!

A gentleman named J was at the door very nice polite I've knows for years. Upon walking in I was informed I needed to have my id scanned like I was about to take a flight. As a bar owner and person that's been to thousands of bars I understand the rules and requirements of checking id before entering or being served. I don't have a problem showing my id for the door person to check. On this recent night not only did I have to show my id ( which is the law) I had to give my id to door person to scan, scan really scanned. I'm 58 years old. What about me says do a deep dive on this guy's id. Pretty sure every person in the bar could guess I'm over 21, 31,41,51 and a few might guess 61. How insulting. How incredibly insulting to every regular over the age of 35. As regular customer for over a decade at least I feel like I've earned the respect and the courtesy of not having my id violated as a regular and a person that qualifies for senior discounts. I guess ownership is determined to ruin tiki no just like they did with the firefly and the powerhouse. In my humble opinion the tiki no ownership would be better served trying to create demand for new customers and not just being demanding of longtime friends and customers of tiki no. Maybe they should hire a monkey to stand out front to attract more customers. Everyone loves a monkey. Maybe the GM could do it. The one thing the only thing I now like about tiki no are the people that work there and worked there in the past. Hats for hiring well, even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Oh a regular is a person that regularly spends money at your business. If I wanted to be insulted I'd call my ex-wife.

Loved their happy hour prices - from 9pm to 10pm all the cocktails were only $11. We reserved a table for our large group of 16 and we were informed that it would be about $150 for the table. We were told it would include a bottle of prosecco and automatic gratuity. But we were warned that if we showed up after 10, we'd still have to pay the cover charge ($5). The inside has low lighting and there is a security guard posted at the entrance. The spot is surrounded by a couple of fast food spots, like the dog haus. And, of course, a taco truck and hot dog vendor show up later in the night! I appreciated that the music was at a good volume; I didnt have to scream to people to get them to hear me. They have a water station conveniently located at the bar. The drinks were great (they've got happy hour prices before 10). And its pretty empty until after 10. I enjoyed my margarita and the Mexican candy shot that I was able to request to have made. Honestly, the drinks were awesome! Since some people from our party werent able to show (down to 11), we were able to ask about the smaller group table, closer to the bar. Our original table was in the back, after the dance floor. Its great if you want to be isolated. Our table ended up being $100, probably cause we didnt get that promised prosecco and it didnt have table service, which worked for us. We had fun dancing. Even though, the music being played wasnt what we consider as throwback hip-hop/reggaeton. The bathrooms were pretty small, with an odd layout (a step before the two stalls). I'd check this nightclub out again!
