I spent a significant amount of time researching stylists because after a bad cut, I specifically wanted someone who appeared to have the technical knowledge and understanding to properly reshape and correct curly hair. Unfortunately, this has to be one of the worst haircuts I have received in my life. Right now I look like John Lennon's son if John Lennon hated his son and cut his hair with a blindfold. I explicitly warned the stylist multiple times that my hair is very curly and that even removing a small amount of length would cause it to spring up significantly. Those concerns were ignored completely. After washing and styling my hair myself at home, it became extremely clear that this stylist does not know how to properly cut curly hair or bangs at the level that should be expected from any professional stylist, especially one working in a NYC salon positioning itself as technically skilled. The layers are uneven, mismatched, and dramatically shorter than discussed. Even after straightening it, the result looks nothing like the portfolio work shown on this salon's website and is not flattering to my face whatsoever. I feel like a little boy vs a 36 year old woman. And an ugly one at that. After asking friends later in the night, even the people you would expect to say "oh, it's not that bad, don't worry about it" had the same reaction: "wow, absolute massacre." That honestly confirmed for me that this was not me being overly emotional or "not understanding" an alternative haircut. The cut is simply technically incorrect for what was requested. What made the experience even worse was the patronizing response when I expressed concern. Instead of listening, I was asked, "Oh, do you not like it because it's alternative?" No. I do not like it because it is objectively wrong for what I asked for. This was not an issue of personal taste or being "edgy." It was a technical failure to properly execute the cut, listen to concerns about curly hair shrinkage, and create a shape that works for my face and texture. It is also very strange to me that in a city like NYC, where salons position themselves as highly skilled and specialized, direct client feedback is apparently treated as some kind of attack rather than part of the job. A client expressing that something is uneven or not what they requested should not cause defensiveness, gaslighting, or attempts to reframe the issue into a personality problem. If a salon cannot handle one sentence of direct feedback without trying to psychologically flip the situation onto the client, that says a lot. There is something genuinely strange happening in a lot of NYC salons right now. So many stylists do not listen at all. They do not take the time to actually study someone's face shape, texture, proportions, or how the hair naturally falls. Instead, it feels like many are applying the same default haircut method to every person who walks in. Hair should be a craft. It requires attunement, restraint, observation, and critical thinking. Especially with curly hair, you cannot approach every client with a copy-paste technique and expect good results. This is not a small correction either. Because of how much length was removed and how curly my hair is, this will take months to grow out properly. I also attempted to contact the salon directly via email and received no response 24 hours later.

Apparently if you purchase a Groupon, you have to call for an appointment and not book it online. The receptionist said this time they would accommodate my appointment despite this policy. There's a $3 tax they have to collect on the Groupon apparently, and so I paid for that with my card as I did not have cash. My appointment was for 12:30 and I was not seen until 12:50 in a half empty salon. The head spa was good. And relaxing. Despite the loud customer who wouldn't shut up next to me. My hair felt silky after I blow dried it. The Groupon and the website fail to mention the head spa doesn't include a blow dry. A blow dry costs $52 extra, and I didn't want to pay for that given the rain forecast. If you don't pay for a professional blow dry, they give you a dryer and brushes to dry yourself. The quality of the service was good for the Groupon price. I don't know if I consider this 30 min service worth the regular $65 plus $52 blow dry. I also didn't appreciate being made to wait 20 minutes to be seen without a heads up. No one did anything until I asked the receptionist what was going on.

I saw her haircut and loved how it turned out, so I decided to book an appointment for myself over IG and WeChat. I'm glad I did! I have straight, very dark brown hair that's around medium length, and I typically go for layers with longer bangs to frame my face. Louis has been great at giving me the shape I want while keeping the cut flattering and easy to wear. One thing I especially appreciate is how efficient and consistent my appointments have been. Both times I've gone, the entire haircut, including the wash, has taken around 45-60 minutes. I never feel like I'm sitting there for an unnecessarily long appointment, but the cut still feels thoughtful and well done. After two visits, I feel like I've found someone I can trust with my hair. It's long but worth the read! I had extremely dry hair when I first went to YH Salon and I was always told (no matter what salon I went to) that deep conditioning treatments were what I needed. But guess what? Those were only temporary fixes & my hair always went back to dry and brittle forcing me to try & but more products- always more expensive and not working! I came to this salon on a recommendation from a friend. My first time there I got the Essential Blowout performed by their Junior stylist, Moni. She did a beautiful job!! Best Blowout I ever got! It lasted a few days and my scalp didn't feel oily afterwards because (as she explained) they use their own Essential Rinse product in btwn wash & condition. She told me it was an all natural product that acts like a toner for my scalp. It removes the residue from the products, actually making the shampoo and conditioner work BETTER. (I like the sound of that) After that, I decided to try them for a haircut. After discussing with the front desk how I like to wear my hair, I was paired up with senior stylist, Cheryl. She did my cut in record time and it was perfect! She recommended a product that she liked (and it smelled amazing) but didn't force it on me, which is good bc I hate when they do that LOL and what happened when I left the salon shocked me so much that I am now a forever client. EVERY place I went since getting my haircut with Cheryl, ppl have complimented my hair!! That's NEVER happened. Even after I washed it and styled it on my own, people noticed and complimented. If you really want to save your hair or keep it shiny, beautiful and super healthy-- I suggest doing what they say! I'm a native korean speaker so my entire experience was in korean. Came to give this place a try for a women's haircut (long) after they went viral on instagram. Booked my appointment via instagram dm and had to pay a deposit via venmo bc I was a first time client; it was pretty straightforward and they are responsive. Salon is located by penn station and easy to find. Signage isn't lit up but there's pretty big lettering on their windows so hard to miss. Vibe is typical modern hair salon with bright lighting and comfortable chairs. Receptionist was nice but a bit stiff and assistant who washed my hair was good as well. Romi was friendly but seemed pretty matter of fact at first. I showed Romi a pic of the hair style (long hair with layers and bangs) I wanted, she suggested some adjustments to it to customize for me, and was really fast in cutting my hair. I've gotten my haircut quite a few times in ny, dc, and korea and she is definitely one of the fastest I've experienced. We made small talk while she cut my hair and I noticed she opened up a bit more after that. Haircut turned out nice and overall pretty satisfied. However, when I tried to cover up my highlights with my old hairdresser twice, my hair kept fading into a yellow/brown color and I needed to find someone who could help me make the switch for real this time. Thankfully, going to Romi was the best decision I could've made! First of all, her team was so professional and polite, and I felt very welcomed as soon as I got there. I also appreciated how meticulous their service was and felt really taken care of. I immediately warmed up to Romi herself as she was so kind and understanding, and I trusted her as she made the right decisions for my hair! She has great attention to detail and an eye for style, and she made suggestions on using a warmer toned black/brown in order to match my roots.
