She was very professional and gave recommendations that were well balanced with what I wanted while still keeping my hair healthy. For example, I wanted to keep the length and I like my hair to look full at the back, she recommended a ~1 inch trim to keep it healthy and actually help it look more full. I wanted more of a loose curling iron/blowout look with the perm and she was honest about what kind of styling I would have to do at home to get the look I want. I was bored with my straight hair so I decided to get a perm. I haven't gotten a perm since I was a teenager in the 90s so I wasn't sure what to expect. I pass by Aate almost every day bc I live in the area. I wanted to go to a place that was familiar with Asian hair so I decided to check them out. I walked in to ask questions and explain what I wanted. I didn't want tight curls but more like waves. They were very patient and explained my options, pricing, and everything else I asked about. I made an appointment and came back to do a digital perm. Sophie was my hairdresser and she was so sweet and explained everything she was doing as she went along. I made an online appointment for my 12-year-old child at Aate Beauty Salon on 9/19. The salon advertised a kids' haircut for ages 6-12 at $55 (E4). I submitted my credit card information, agreeing to the $55 charge. On the day of the appointment, I arrived with my child for her haircut. Midway through the service, the owner, Soomi, informed us that her haircut would actually cost $90. When I showed her my email confirmation of the $55 price for a kids' haircut, as well as the information on their squareup.com website, she rudely told us, "Then only pay $85." It wasn't about getting $5 off--it's about the ethics and professionalism of how Soomi runs her business, which I find very deceptive and unprofessional. When I pointed out that we were not informed of the $90 price when making the reservation or before her haircut started in person, the quality of the service dramatically declined. My daughter's haircut was rushed, leaving her with uneven lengths in both the front and back. (Please see photos). They didn't even bother drying her hair, so she left the salon with wet hair and a horribly done cut, which now I have to take her to someone else to fix. If you're considering this salon, be prepared to be scammed by Soomi and expect to be charged at least 50% more than what you signed up for. Positive reviews here are questionable. They lure you in with advertised prices, only to demand much more once you started the service. And if you question them, they will retaliate with terrible hair service. I've never had such an experience at any other Korean hair salon in NYC. read more

I've been getting my perm done here for over 2 years. I know perming is bad for your hair but I truly believe Aate beauty uses great products so that I can continue to come back. They do men's perms really well as the curls look really natural and not super curly. I love Min as my hair stylist! read more

I never really know what I want when I go in and they always provide recommendations that end up looking nice. My girlfriend hasn't left me so I think the haircut did it's job! Omg!! What a great salon. I wanted to get my hair colored, and it was such an amazing experience. Soomi is absolutely a professional, and so accommodating and skilled. She spoke with me when I got there about what I wanted and she was so intentional and purposeful about everything. She is so friendly and I had so much fun changing up my hair for the new years! I have a lot of hair, so it usually takes a long time but I didn't feel rushed or feel like it was burdensome. I absolutely plan to come back next time I need my hair done. I got a haircut here recently by Min. He seemed a bit quiet which is fine but when I explained what I wanted he seemed to understand and then do much to address those wishes . I paid $100 for the cut, where in the back didn't show much difference at all and in the front where he did cut more the length was actually uneven and I had to go to another place to get it fixed. He kept insisting on cutting my hair dry too but I don't think the hair itself was fully straight as he was rushing through the straightening process for him to get a clean cut so it looked choppy when I did it myself at home too. read more

The other day I stopped by for an appointment around 4 for a redye of my hair since my roots starting growing out. Ive been to Aate before alone and with my boyfriend who got his perm here. Both experienced were exceptional. This time the stylist who did my hair did so in a very rushed state and chemically burned my skin. I had expressed not once but a couple of times that i was in pain. My ears are burned and the back of my head. The entire process from 4:00 to 7:00 of bleaching was incredibly painful. Towards the end I just gave up and sat through the pain. The skin on my ears have gotten worse and just throb, this entire experience made me incredibly hesitant on coming back. Not only that but they even dyed the sides of my face grey haha which wouldve been not a big deal but I had plans on going out with friends The pictures shown are how my skin looks now but the day of they were throbbing red :'( read more

Came here for a perm, I was looking for a new place to get a perm and after a couples of Reddit reviews I decided to look more into this place. I DM them over instagram and received a rather fast response and an appointment in 2 days. When I came in I waited less than 5 minutes and a lady offered to wash my hair and the initial cut began. My hair hadn't been touched in months because I just moved for work and trying new salons makes me incredibly anxious. I was meeting friends in the city on a Friday but their train rate late; I looked up salons near Penn and found AATE's Instagram/good reviews on Reddit. Gave it a shot and am very glad that I did. I kind of just gave the hairdresser free rein and they did a really good job giving me a cut to fit my face shape and hair texture. Super comfortable experience and great value for the price. Came here on Friday afternoon. I booked the appointment one night before and their schedule was pretty flexible. Got my appointment very easily. I got seated right away after I arrived. The store wasn't busy which is great so I can really enjoy their service. I came here to do single color. The hairstylist did a very thorough check of my hair color and suggested me to do roots and toner instead of one color. The prices are similar so she wasn't trying to make me pay more. I appreciate her taking the time to check the color and came with that conclusion. Everything was ok until she started to rush everything....She became little violent and pulling my hair... It was my first time here and the prices are reasonable. Hairstylist is experienced. The background music is chill and deep house type which is comfortable. Overall not bad. PS - they have a newly opened lash studio upstairs and is having a big discounts right now. I'm coming back for that. read more

Is did dyed my hair here twice. First time I bleached it and make it blonde (I have black hair). It was good and I like it. Second time just dyed the blonde part a little darker, it was alright but I can tell they were ripping me off...it's not possible that bleached my whole head and tone them is cheaper than dye one color for an hour. But when it came to color correction, I had the worst experience. I have dark roots for about 4 inches and the rest is blonde, I want to make my hair all dark brown. I ended up with 3 different colors on my hair. The root is light brown, the black hair is dark brown like I wanted and the tips are lighter and it's not even. I can still see some lighter patches...to be honest I'm okay with that. But dyed just the black part to be different color is unexceptable, and all they did is giving excuses and I just don't wanna argue so. $200 is totally not worth it. read more

The husband waited till last minute and insisted he didn't need a haircut before his sister's wedding. Long story short, we flew into town and we needed to cut his stubborn, Korean hair a day before the wedding and Soomi so graciously took us in. His hair isn't easy to cut. Too short, it sticks up.
