First and foremost, don't even consider eating here unless you're a foodie and enjoy at least a leisurely 2 hour meal. If you have young children don't bother to subject them to this experience.  That said and out of the way, eating here is a truly magnificent event. Words can't accurately describe the experience, we were totally blown away. The location is superb, food is more superb, the presentation is even more superb and the service from all the staff is impeccable.  If you find yourself in the Cascais area and have time to experience one of the most innovative tasting menus on the planet, then book it up and get ready for the dining experience of your life. Bring your credit card but it doesn't need to be platinum or black.  5 or even 6 stars do not do this place justice in my opinion!

We had booked a hotel stay here and realized that it was also a Michelin star restaurant so we decided to give it a try. The service was exceptional. The food was wonderful as well. We started with a cocktail overlooking the amazing view and sunset. We had three children under age 9 with us and they were very accommodating for the kids. Each of the courses incorporated themes of the region. It was quite inventive even more so than some of the Michelin restaurants I've eaten at in Paris. I would suggest they update or renovate the decor as the carpets were stained.

For food, presentation and service, this Michelin star restaurant is first class. Very nice selection of wines and great views of the ocean.

Sunset. Vihno Verde. Pigeon. Yes, please.

Visiting this Michelin Star restaurant on the Atlantic coast near Sintra was one of the highlights of our 2 week Portugal trip. I ordered the 5 plate chef tasting menu, and since this was a trip over this past summer i honestly cannot recount all of what this was at the time (the menu has both changed and is not in English, so unfortunately i can't use that as a reference). So that being said, this review will have to be more of the experience overall. The restaurant's setting is fantastic: you are on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, and just in case you need a brush up on your astronomy, keep in mind the sun sets west, so you will almost certainly catch an incredible sun set during your meal if you are here for dinner. The restaurant offers a unique menu, but not necessarily "Portuguese" food if you are looking for something local. The main dish of my tasting was pigeon, which was a first for me - it was tender, a little gamey, and would be a disservice to say it tasted like chicken. Top this off with an some excellent and artfully plated deserts and a nice selection of Portuguese wines, and you can be certain you will have a memorable meal here. Our server was very helpful but not overbearing as well. Bear in mind that there will be no 'tip' area on your bill, so if you feel they did a good job, throw them some extra (10% is usually good, as service charges are in the bill too). We forgot to do this and ended up tipping the next morning. Also - since if you are an American and you're reading this, this probably means your planning a vacation so you've got some time: make reservations now, the place fills up.

This is the only restaurant in Portugal that asked for a tip. Afterwards I realized they ripped me off because VAT was included in my meal price. Don't fall for the tip is not included, it might be because I am American. My server was on the grumpy side and never once smiled, but I think that is his personality, he smiled for no one. Food: I ordered the pasta with chile, calamari, and shrimp. It was a unique pasta with garlic and tiny amounts of ginger, that played very well and there was like 2 chile rings and then calamari and shrimp. The pasta was cooked perfectly and right amount of sauce that just played well together. The calamari was cooked to perfection as was the shrimp but a few were not cleaned properly but everything tasted good. The chile did have a tiny bite so somebody might think this is spicy but was not for me, finally something with flavor. I did not eat all the pasta because then I ordered the octopus. The octopus was not cleaned properly but the texture was spot on and the taste was great, I added some of my own hot sauce on the side to give it some kick. Odd to have a boiled egg with the octopus, good taste but the green ring indicates the egg was overcooked. Everything was temperature hot and served fairly quickly. WiFi available. I should have just ordered the pasta because that was fantastic! The octopus was okay but took some work to clean. The pasta gives this place a 5. Service and tip with VAT already included would drop to 2. The octopus is 3 stars. But the pasta was the best meal thus far in Portugal.

Keep in mind that with the location, view and great food comes a price tag, but worth it if you are a foodie. We started with octopus salad (incredible if you like octopus), shrimp cooked in olive oil and spices, and a half dozen oysters. My cousin's husband ordered a 4.4 lb lobster and loved it. Needless to say, he ordered no sides. My cousin and I split a whole fish cooked Portuguese style with potatoes and some veggies. Waiter brought it whole, but deboned it and served it for us. Service was as expected from a high end restaurant. Decided to go to Belem in Lisbon for nata, so skipped dessert. Overall, if you have an important business deal, a special occasion or just want a great meal, O'Faroleiro will make it special. Cheers!

Sooo I was so happy to find Restaurante Mar Do Inferno! It had gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean and the best seafood ! We made our reservation online before leaving California. It was easy and had an English and Portuguese option. We arrived and once we got there we were greeted warmly and seated quickly . There were all these fresh seafood options that you could pick from in live tanks ! Service was top tier !! Our waiter was funny and very entertaining! He warmed up even more as the evening progressed! We had the best view of the sea and ambiance was lovely ! We ordered the seafood platter - langoustines, lobster, prawns, sea bream, potatoes in a garlic butter sauce !! Everything was SO FRESH!! So delicious !!! Great wine selection especially European wines and cocktails too !! Hubby loved it and we definitely will come back next time we are in Portugal!!

Unfortunately, it ended up being the most disappointing--and most expensive--meal we've had during our month in Portugal. The experience got off to a poor start. The hostess wasn't welcoming, and when I politely asked if we could sit closer to the window, I was told those tables had been reserved weeks in advance. We had also made a reservation for our anniversary, so that was disappointing. We were seated behind a pillar instead. Throughout the evening, not a single member of the waitstaff smiled. They all looked unhappy to be there, which created a surprisingly cold atmosphere. None of the staff ever came by to ask how our meal was, and no one acknowledged our anniversary. The restaurant itself wasn't nearly as elegant or luxurious as its reputation suggests. Aside from the lobster tank, the décor and atmosphere felt rather ordinary. To make matters worse, our view overlooked a wire fence and a parking area instead of the beautiful ocean setting we had expected. There were also several odd service issues. I ordered a gin martini. They said they were out of green olives, so I requested a lemon twist instead. The drink arrived with black olives and a lemon twist, which was confusing. As for the food, the complimentary bread with the crab pâté was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, everything after that was underwhelming. The sea bass was bland and forgettable, and the vegetables were overcooked to the point of being mushy. What made the evening especially disappointing is that every other restaurant we've visited in Cascais has been wonderful. Friendly, smiling staff checked on us, made us feel welcome, and served memorable meals--often at much lower prices. Given Mar do Inferno's reputation and premium prices, we expected an exceptional dining experience. Instead, we left wondering how it has earned such glowing reviews. I genuinely hope management takes a close look at the service, atmosphere, and food quality, because right now the restaurant simply doesn't live up to its reputation.
