This is worth the drive to Chama New Mexico. My sister and I went there on a sisters trip. The food, service, and bartender were amazing. We ordered the ribeye with all the fixings. The ribeye melted in your mouth. It is cattle country. Hotel is being remodeled so we could not see the rooms. The bar had the original mirror behind the bar, plus original bar. I had a White Russian my sister a martini. Both were excellent. We went there to ride on their historic Cumbres & Toltec scenic railroad. Sister lives in New Mexico that is why we planned our trip there. read more

The bar was fairly quiet on a Tuesday night, and a good place to get together with friends. The girl tending the bar was really nice. Nut Brown Ale is a pretty good beer, and IMO the best option on tap. My understanding is that the restaurant has closed for good, but on some nights of the week you can order a good range of food from the bar. On the other nights, you still may be able to order a hot dog or a brat. read more

Dive bar - cheap drinks, loud music. pool table,, TVs where you can catch a game, and a CD juke box- all the things you want from a dive bar! Their menu is bar food and small but not bad. I had the Foster burger which hit the spot for a late dinner (kinda a patty melt on Texas toast). The drink menu included a short list of simple cocktails- but they were good and made well. Like most places in Chama as you head into off season, their kitchens closes early on sundays (if they are even open on sundays). Well stocked bar. Their service was excellent. There was only one bartender who was also hostess and waitress and she handled everything so smoothly and politely. This is an old hotel in a charming little mountain town. Very good service, and lots of locals make it a hangout. They don't serve food until 1 pm, but it's worth the wait -- I tried the fish and chips, and the fish was a cut above usual bar standards. The fries were thin and just right as well. The hotel is right across the street from the coal-fired narrow-gauge train that runs to Antonito, Colorado and back, so it gets lots of tourists in the three seasons when things are hopping. Hubby and I had the combo nachos! (Not a great pic because we already ate half!) They were awesome! House made FRESH chips, lots of cheese, beans and veggies and great guacamole and salsa. Had the grilled ribeye and grilled trout a couple of weeks ago with the salad bar. Everything was fresh and prepared well. Y'all need to give them another chance if you were unhappy in the past. Spending a night in Chama and not much to choose from on a Monday evening. Foster's was open and looked fun so we took a chance. It's been open since 1881. Locals hanging out, playing pool, visiting, listening to the juke box. Very friendly atmosphere. We had chicken wings which were very good with sauce served on the side. Perfect portions. Only one waitress/barmaid so a little slow but ok. The restaurant is not open, just the bar, so limited seating and menu. We would go again. read more

After reading other reviews and maybe big town people that are always in a rush, this is a small town location. Nobody was in a hurry, sit down and chill, maybe talk to the people you're with, even local people will talk with you. Yes there was only one server, did see a couple cooks. The food was good, we had good service and loved the wood burning stove in the center of the restaurant! There was a salad bar, it was fresh. We had just arrived in Chama and finished checking into our hotel. We were hungry so we decided to head into town for dinner. Not a lot of options to choose from. Local was open but was low on pizza dough, so we had to choose between Foster's and Subway. Since we all know what to expect from Subway, we decided to eat at Foster's. It did not go well. The menu was mostly Mexican and American options. I went for the smothered burrito, Christmas style. My wife didn't order anything (smart move on her part). My in-laws ordered nachos, and a hamburger w/fries. So then the waiting game commenced. After about an hour, our food arrived. My plate was full from edge to edge, so the portion size was great. However, the food was just not good. The beans lacked any flavor and the rice was subpar. The size of the burrito was great, but neither the red nor the green sauce was anything special (which is disappointing since that is what NM is known for). Plus, the burrito contained meat even though it was not mentioned in the menu. Not everything was bad though. Our server was nice and apologetic about the amount of time before we got our food. Plus, there was a full bar adjacent to the restaurant so the drink options were pretty unlimited. I had a couple of Marble IPAs with my dinner. The service and the drink selection netted them the 2 stars. I hope I never have to come back here again. Unless, they make some major improvements I probably won't. I didn't waste my time taking photos of the food. Should have just gone to Subway!! read more

Starting with service: The young man with water was very nice and helpful. But our waitperson was nothing short of surly, with short, curt answers. Asked about getting a Caesar salad on the side (from the menu), her response was "No Caesar salad. No spinach salad. Just the salad bar." Then she brought a stack of napkins and silverware for us to pass among ourselves.... When the first entree arrived, she gave it to the wrong person at our table. She then brought a similar entree, and realized that she had mixed them up, so she leaned across the table, past 2 other people, to move a plate, instead of walking around. By the time all the orders were passed around, we were all checking to make sure we all got what we ordered. At one point she was still talking on the phone to someone while passing out the food. The food was good, not bad. The atmosphere of the little restaurant reminds one of a rustic cantina, though I'm not certain it is a deliberate decorating choice; it seems to be a remnant if older glory days and the owner never wanted to change or update. A very small and extremely limited salad bar sits in a dark, back corner, with a poor selection of vegetables and dressings. This town is loaded with small restaurants that cater to the crowds coming to ride the Cumbres and Toltec RR. You would think that the owner would do something to compete and keep customers returning, instead of finding someone who can easily chase them away. We will NOT be returning. read more

Food choices are all over the place here, but seems to be mostly either Mexican or American home cooking. Certainly nothing healthy. Had the Mexican combo plate $13, with 1 taco, 1 enchilada, beans, rice and 2 sopapillas. Taco was awful. Enchilada was tasteless. Beans were good but had very hot jalapeños mixed in. Rice was forgettable. Sopapillas were ok. Service was very nice. The place looks like a converted house with the bar upfront filled with regulars and a separate entrance for the restaurant that was filled with tourists. Choices in the area are very limited so, all things considered, it was ok when you have only 1 other choice of places to eat for dinner. read more

We spent an evening at the bar, but also had food. The bartender was so much fun and she also doubled as our server. Excellent service. I highly recommend the Fosters margarita. Spicy and so so good. Patients will be rewarded! They were short handed and busy, but the service was actually very good in these days of labor shortages. Once the food arrived, the slight dissapointment in service quickly disappeared. My stuffed soppapia with red and green chili was absolutly fantastic. Enough heat to notice, but not overwhelming. The only place open at lunch on a holiday weekend. Sat in the bar, bar person was friendly, but waitress took 40 minutes to bring chips and salsa, the salsa and guacamole were in small plastic containers that were right of the shelf and the chips were inedible. I had to get my order to go, I was soooo mad. The burger I ate on the side of the road was basic, hard to mess that up. really disappointing, it seems like they would have the basics down by now. The bar was way cool. Old building, old bar. Atmosphere was chill. They have some stools and counter set up outside. You can kick it, have a beer, and watch the bustling Chama street life ;) The food was OK. I got a "Smothered Beef Burrito" (GREEN chile!!, of course). It was your basic, ground beef based burrito. Iit was $8.25. Came with rice and beans. Was decent sized and pretty filling. The best part is they sold PINTS of booze from behind the bar :) And regular prices too. I got a pint of Seagrams for around 8 bucks. Saved me the time searching for a liquor store in Chama. I've never been to a bar where they sold pints. I wonder if I could have ordered a Coke at the bar and stiffened it up a lil' bit on the cheap?...:) read more

Rolled into chama to climb on trains & get some road weary coffee/ stumbled across fosters saloon & restaurant. Great "everybody-knows-everybody" small town, log cabin atmosphere. Many taxidermy beasts adorn the walls, most notably some black bears & a sombrero wearing deer head: ready to party. The breakfast was standard American fare, eggs, hash browns, bacon, toast, and surprisingly strong coffee. Come for the trains, stay for the stuffed bears & coffee. read more

Not sure why this place is rated higher. Excellent Mexican food. Had the Combination Plate which had two enchiladas, a taco, beans & rice. All were delicious! Nicole was my waitress and she was an example of the kind of service we all used to expect pre-COVID. The interior is small, but there are a couple booths & tables in the bar across the hall in the entry and you can order from there. One warning, the Salsa is rather hot. Wow, I don't think I've ever met someone so unhappy with their job...... The maîtred' was fabulous, super friendly, had a smile, brought us drinks right away. But the waitress was -- less than delightful. We waited about 10 or 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order (I really think the maîtred' has the wrong job, she would have been a fantastic waitress!) Anyways, the waitress finally came, and if I knew her name I would say who it was, but she didn't introduce herself. Her greeting was (and without a smile) "Hey guys what's it gonna be?". Huh. That's different. Both my husband and I were a little surprised I think because my husbands reaction was to say "Howdy!" And mine was to say "Hi!" LOL, that still didn't crack her. Now, when you have food allergies, it's always scary to have a waitress like this. My husband ordered his dish and asked about gluten, to which she begrudgingly returned to check in the kitchen (which at least she checked!) came back and now it's my turn. I place my order, and of course sheepishly explain that I have a dairy allergy, and to please leave the cheese off. Well, when our food finally came, of course a big helping of cheddar cheese was present on my refried beans. I didn't dare send it back, who knows how she would have responded, she actually got upset when my husband later told her that she left his soda off the check! Speaking of check, I guess there was no option for dessert for us, the check was brought with no "did you enjoy your meal?" Or "room for dessert?" Just a frown and a grumble. Now on to the food. It actually wasn't too bad. I would say whoever is cooking back there needs to use a little more salt or some sort of flavoring on the food. I had chicken tacos, they were pretty good after I added my own salt. I also pushed back the cheese on the beans to taste what was underneath to see if it would be worth sending back - they weren't. Super bland. I didn't miss out. What was absolutely delicious were the ribs my hubby had- perfectly tender and well seasoned! Also the sopaipillas are to die for!!! So fluffy and soft with the perfect crisp, those were sooooooo good. We tried this restaurant and was very pleased. The owners came out and told us the story of the restaurant's history and was super friendly. I had the ribeye steak (pretty good) and the rest of the family had the Mexican combination plate (really good). The chips we're thick corn tortillas - the hot sauce was great. We ate here for breakfast both mornings we stayed in Chama. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious.Smothered sausage and egg burrito, the Works Omelet, biscuits with gravy and chips and salsa. Will NOT, I repeat WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT! Service sucked. They took forever to take out order and a little longer to bring our food. I ordered the green cheese enchiladas and honestly the sauce was nasty. Canned sauce maybe? I'm not sure but I hated it. The beans were dry and nasty and the rice as well and smelled funky like it was bad or had been left out too long. My son got the bean and cheese burrito and he ate ONE bite and hated it also. The place was also very small and and crowded which i guess is understandable since the town is pretty small. Also very over priced for a poor meal. I don't mind paying for my food, what i mind is paying for food that was nasty and didn't even finish eating. Regretted ever stopping here to eat. Went for dinner after a day of sight seen9g, was told this restaurant was good. After ordering, we spent 30 minutes waiting for food. We questioned the server who left and came back to tell us they were plating our food and we would have it in five minutes. After 10 minutes, the food came out, looked great on the plate, but was ice cold. Sent it back to get heated when we discovered my husband's ribs were ice cold also. We got up and paid for our 2 beers and left. Worst service EVER and no one cared if you sat and waited forever. On the bright side, we went to Outlaw BBQ and had excellent food and service. Will never go to Foster's again and will let everyone know how bad it was. Can I give less than one star? read more

The bartender was friendly and handed us two paper menus. The menus were dirty. The place looked dirty. I understand Covid has messed us a lot of things.
