I've been to foster's many times throughout the years, but today's visit prompted my review. Quinn, the guy who took our order, was so nice and charming! He was delightful, patient, and kind. Also, the breakfast burrito is INCREDIBLE. Simple and delicious with fresh ingredients. Others in my party spoke highly of the French silk pie, the peanut butter cookie, and the cheese/apple sandwich. I will say that sometimes the place is packed with screaming children. Omg, best "country" breakfast ever! Very low key place with homemade everything. I had the Grits bowl with eggs, black beans, and salsa over yellow grits, otherwise known as polenta. Yum! Big slab of homemade country sausage, double yum! Hubby had the herb biscuit with eggs and country sausage. The biscuits are HUGE, soft, and flaky. Delish! We bought a bag of 4 for $6 to take home for another day. The restaurant is humble and homey. Tip- You order inside at the counter, pay at the register, and then they bring your order to your table. I have been coming to Foster's for many years - it's a DURM institution. The homey atmosphere, the gravel parking lot, the porches and picnic tables - it feels like North Carolina. The food is very good and reliable. I came to pick up a pie on Monday and thought I would get lunch. Except I have recently had to go on a restrictive elimination diet, and finding something to eat is a trial. Shout out to the wonderful Esther who went through the ingredients with me, asked the kitchen, and did it all with a smile. I got a little teary with her caring and helpful attitude. I came here for a weekend breakfast and enjoyed my meal. You go to the storefront, where they have giant boards of the menus, and order online or by calling the listed number. I waited around 20 minutes from ordering to receiving my food, which was packaged in brown paper bags. They have a large and open outdoor space featuring picnic tables on the grass which is great for socially distanced meals. It's where I ended up eating my food. I shared a butternut squash lasagna off of their seasonal menu as well as a grilled Italian grinder off their regular menu. The food was priced well for what you got. The lasagna was decent but nothing super memorable, and I couldn't really get the taste of the squash with all the tomato flavor going on. The Italian sandwich, though, was really good. I'm not normally big into sandwiches but this one was flavorful with just the right ratio of bread vs. meat vs. vinaigrette vs. onion/lettuce/tomato. Yes, that's what it's called on the menu. The grits bowl. I had it many years ago and liked it then and wanted to try it again and it was every bit as good this time as it was the first time.b They complimented the grits bowl with an egg that was actually in the grits along with black beans and salsa. That was a part of my original grits bowl of way back when. They also had bean sprouts on top as a garnish. I never was a fan of being sprouts and I wish they hadn't put them on my dish but it didn't take away from my love for grits. I'm a southern guy. Along with the grits bowl came a hot cup of coffee which I thoroughly enjoyed and it turned out to be a really pleasant breakfast experience for a damp, gloomy winter morning. This is my second time visiting Foster's and it has been consistently good! The first time I came (pre-COVID) with a friend and got the carrot cake, peanut butter pie, and grilled Italian grinder. Everything was superb. The cake was soft and the cream cheese frosting hit the spot. The peanut butter pie was fluffy, light, and rich all at the same time. The second time we brought our dog and ate outside. Due to COVID, we had to order over the phone and they brought the food outside for us to pick up and sit where we pleased on the patio. My boyfriend got the daily omelet special and I got the BLT Chicken Ceasar wrap with a slice of key lime pie. The omelet was fluffy and packed with flavor, topped with an amazing herb pesto and crunchy tater tots. My wrap was just what I needed after a hot afternoon walk around the Duke Wall. Finally, the Key Lime Pie was perfect for a hot summer day. It had the perfect notes of tart and sweet and the crust was fantastic. read more

I've had two experiences at Foster's, one decent, one disappointing. First experience was for takeout - stopped by to grab a smoothie and a lox bagel on my way home. The smoothie was full of icy chunks and blended pretty badly, but tasted good. I enjoyed the proportions of the lox bagel - plenty of good lox! - and the fact that it came on sort of a salad bed even though that's maybe not so traditional. I also had a lovely conversation with the cashiers on the way out. Yesterday, I was climbing with a big group and we wanted to have brunch afterward. Knowing the dangers of showing up at a brunch place at noon on a Sunday with 7 people, we called ahead to a few places. I was the one who called Foster's. I told them I had a group of 7 ready to eat in about ten minutes and asked whether they had room and could have a table ready for us. The guy who answered the phone said, 'sure, come on over!' When we got there, the place was overflowing, there were no tables, no one knew what I was talking about, and there were no apologies. Cashier was basically "I don't answer the phones, you should ask the guy at the ordering counter. Ordering counter guy: "I don't know anything about that." Girl next to him: "Well we don't take reservations, so I guess maybe a big group just came in and so now we're full." OK, thanks Foster's, this is a great way to ensure I won't be back. read more

I love Foster's Market. There is a variety of fresh foods cooked from scratch. The breakfasts are always very good and there is a variety of menu choices, especially for breakfast. Some of the breakfast options are served all day. Their baked goods, especially the savory ones are memorable, we love the rolls and corn bread and try not to order the sweet ones as we try to watch what we eat. I love their soups, especially the hearty winter ones which can be eaten with a bread at lunchtime that is filling and economical. There are plenty of vegetarian options and vegan options along with the more traditional options that include meats. read more

This is not your average restaurant, this is where you find next level food in combinations and with ingredients you would not normally think of. And- it is priced well. Ok - full disclaimer - we love the restaurant so much that we have several of her cookbooks as well. If you are looking for a very casual meal, this is the place. For breakfast or lunch, this is a great place to swing by on your way to work to pick up something you will enjoy. It is decorated in a kind of rustic shabby sheik that makes you feel like you are eating in an authentic southern restaurant that is in the middle of nowhere. It is a very welcoming place. Ordered the burrito, with potatoes on the side, and it potatoes arrived cold. They have no WiFi, which is weird because it's a cafe. The cloth seats inside are dirty and there was an overpowering smell in the back corner of the restaurant (smelled like a dirty rag). And lastly, they have a silly way of delivering your food: by yelling your name repeatedly until you answer or they find you. Its 2022-- get some WiFi and turn it off on the weekends if loitering is a concern, and get some table numbers to pass out to customers so you don't have to scream their name throughout restaurant. I don't understand all of the 5 star reviews. This place is mediocre at best, which is disappointing-- I had high hopes. 2 stars because the inside and outside area looks cute/has potential, but that's about it. Foster's is a bit off the beaten path compared to other breakfast and brunch spots in Durham, but it's well worth the short drive from downtown. When you pull up it gives you a cabin/farm vibe, and there's plenty of parking in an overflow lot. The porch is pupper friendly - always a plus! It's a little confusing when you walk in, so here's what you do. Walk to the counter where the kitchen is, and there's a menu up on the wall. Once you know what you want (drinks and all) someone behind the counter - anyone who's free - will take your. Yes, there's mimosas. Then you get a ticket and a number to put on your table. The back of the place was packed, so we found a cozy table tucked up front. When your food is ready a runner calls out your name because it's usually easier than trying to find the number on your table. When you're done you pay at the register. I found a bus bin to put our empty plates in but I still honestly don't know if that's what you're supposed to do. Now, the food. My boyfriend ordered the tomato basil soup to start which was delicious and the perfect portion. I got the breakfast biscuit with bacon (it was New Years Day and resolutions are dumb) and a side of hash browns. The biscuit is what my dreams are made of - fluffy and buttery with cheese and herbs mixed in. God it was good. They give you at least a dozen eggs on the sandwich too and huge pieces of bacon. I think bf got some kind of turkey sandwich but I was too busy making love to my breakfast biscuit to ask how it was. It's busy for a reason - do yourself a favor and try it! read more

Me and the wife love this place. We seem to find ourselves coming here every Saturday for breakfast or brunch! We tend to opt for earlier times as the lot tends to fill up as you approach brunch/lunch time. Also, the earlier time ultimately leads to less people. They do offer outdoor seating. I'm a creature of habit so I usually either get a salmon bagel or breakfast biscuit with bacon. Of course I always get a side of home fries! The wife really enjoys the BLT and the huevos rancheros. I've tried the majority of the sandwiches and I find the standouts to be the Cubano and BLT. They also offer a sandwich of the week. They also have a salad/deli/prepared food section as well as a bakery. Definitely a must try if you're in the area! read more

I love Foster's market. The setting is really eclectic. You can order fresh salads, made to order sandwiches , cake, homemade cookies an Soham purchase wine and beer. They also have cookbooks from all the culinary masters and local sauces, honey and other cooking ingredients. There is seating indoor in the room in the back or on the outside patio. We dined late on a Saturday and it was very relaxed and empty. I want to come back for breakfast because that menu looked amazing. My salad trio was one of the best I have had. read more

I cannot recommend this restaurant. We dined here for the first time yesterday. The two stars is for the ample outdoor seating but I will not return because of the food options. My body does not tolerate eating fruits and vegetables. Most all of their offerings are sandwiches or chicken/tuna salad with other things in the salad than just the meat. When I ordered I asked if they used real eggs for the only breakfast options: Scrambled Eggs and Omelet of the day and was told that they did. I was suspicious that they did not because no over easy/medium/hard eggs are offered. I ordered scrambled eggs and bacon and did not eat any sides. I'm pretty sure that the scrambled eggs I received were fake liquid eggs with many chemicals in them. I was up all night with a stomachache and nausea. Everything else eaten yesterday was my homemade food. This restaurant seems to be a vegan / plant-based oriented restaurant with limited protein options. Inside, the restaurant is a bit difficult to navigate with where to go to order, then pay, and then get drinks. At least they bring the food to you, but the constant yelling out of names is annoying when you're trying to enjoy a quiet lunch. And then we had to bus our own tables at the end. For the prices charged, I would have been willing to tip to have my table bussed. Not impressed and not planning to return. read more

Super cute breakfast or lunch place! We live close by and come here often. The food is delicious and there are lots of good options. The parking lot here is spacious and I've never had trouble finding parking which is nice! I was a bit confused on what to do when I first came here though. When you enter, you order food at the counter in the middle of the room, which is also where you can pick up some other prepared items if you want! Then you pay at the register that is next to the front door when you first walk in. You can find a place to sit inside or outside, and there are water cups next to the fountain drinks inside. I also frequently order online, in which you can just pick up your food on the shelf to the right when you walk in. It's pretty quick and easy so I do this pretty often. Our go to order is the breakfast burrito and the grilled turkey club sandwich, but everything looks great! Def recommend. read more

When my friends suggested going to Foster's, I couldn't believe that it was still around. I think I first went to they moved to the area twenty years ago. And guess what? It's still delicious! We popped in mid-afternoon on a Friday. Two of us had the salad sampler plates, mine all veggie (veggie sampler) and hers with one of the protein (chicken) salads (super sampler). And my other friend got a chicken salad sandwich. Everything was tasty and very fresh. I loved the fresh corn in one of my salads. Loved that they have a variety of outdoor seating options. I loved this place for the home style, farmers market ambience. After you make your selection and pick your order you just sit and wait for them to call u when your order is up. The outdoor seatings are great on a beautiful day. You get the feeling of the down south..southern hospitality. The interior seating is nice and casual as well. My avocado toast I ordered was memorable and the salad selections are so assorted that you can try a sample and take your pickings. After you eat you can pay at the cashier and go on your way. It's amazing to know the amount of trust they give their customers knowing they can eat outside and order without paying immediately. Foster's Market is a great spot for brunch on a relaxed Saturday morning. I recommend getting there early before the crowds showed up. I planned to meet a friend at 9 AM, so we had our pick of seating after we ordered food. You order first, find a seat, and then your food comes out. Portions are generous and prices are fairly cheap! I got a breakfast burrito, which was filled with fluffy eggs and seasoned potatoes. I think it was $7, which was a steal for a burrito so big I had to take half of it home. My friend got a plate with a gigantic biscuit. There's a cute market area where you can buy local jam, bbq sauce, seasonings, and candy. Long lines on a Sunday morning but the food seemed to come out quite fast as long as you didn't order one of the specialty chef items. I ordered the chef's special cornbread with cheese and ham and it wasn't bad but wasn't striking either, especially for $14 so that's what the docked star is for. And also it was very chaotic inside and a bit difficult to navigate. Their other food and baked goods good though and well priced. Coffee was great (Joe Van Gogh) and I liked the modern market vibe.
