This was my first time visiting Nzinga's and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was even more exciting that on Thursdays the shrimp and grits are half off. I ordered takeout and I felt that it was prepared in a sufficient amount of time (about a 10 min wait). The food was hot, well seasoned, and good. The menu had so many items that looked good and I definitely have to come back to visit. The staff was very nice and kind. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is very clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's plenty of space to sit even large parties.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Glad I stumbled upon it and will definitely be back!

    Omelette and it was unbelievable.

As a traveling road warrior I live finding places like this. Nzingas did not disappoint. Friendly, priced right and the omelette was one of the best. Will be back.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Walked in about 9am on a Saturday and early 2000's Music was pumping !! Normally I wouldn't like this but something about hearing Nelly made it okay with me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, Food was good. Bottom of the French toast Bread was hard. Both my sister and I experienced the toughness of the bread. 3 sandwiches came up to be 32.00. Service was prompt. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I like that they offer books to read while you wait and eat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Probably won't be back as I don't travel to that side of town often! Would recommend.

French Toast Combo, Belgian Waffle Combo, and delicious sides. Don't mind the half eaten cabbage and potatoes, we couldn't wait to dig in.

My partner and I were visiting from out of town, were looking for a Black owned breakfast spot, and came across Nzinga's. When I say we were blown away, it's not an understatement. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As soon as you walk in, the space is lively with music and plenty of people picking up and ordering food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One of the co-owners, Freddy, helped us with recommendations and he did not disappoint. We ordered the French toast combo and a Belgian waffle combo + candied yams, home style potatoes, and cabbage (they were sadly out of Mac n cheese at the time). To keep it short, every single thing was a HIT. Please make sure you order the cabbage, it's not your aunties cabbage, made in the style of Zimbabwe cooking. You won't be disappointed! Candied yams and salmon cake were on point and the even though he doesn't like French toast said this is the only French toast he would ever come back for. If you're in Durham looking for a local spot with phenomenal flavor and warm hospitality, make sure to check out Nzinga's! The place is named after a powerful African female anti-slavery activist and this is a lovely namesake in her honor.

    Pancake Combo

This is not my first time eating Nzinga's. The wings are decent and the chicken tenders are okay. I just ordered the pancake combo and they were burnt and inedible. The food here fails to provide a wow factor. They have a two for 6.99 breakfast sandwich deal, which can include a coffee for an extra dollar. However, almost every time I've ordered the coffee, it was never delivered and I had to get money back. It's to the point, where I just stopped ordering the coffee. I do keep in mind that I have only received food through delivery, but the service and food quality should not differ simply because I don't eat in person. I have given this place too many chances and the pancakes were the final straw.

Nerra is at 506 Ramseur Street, Durham, NC. Get a reservation. Don't show up hoping. We went for a belated Father's Day, a week late, because my wife and son let the date slip past them. They'll deny it. I know better. And I'm not actually upset about it, because if they'd remembered, we'd have missed this. We started the night with the Baker's Flight (pumpernickel, cheddar rosemary biscuits, cornbread, house butters). The pastries were excellent. The butter was something else entirely. I asked for 8oz to take home, which is not a thing I do. I don't need more butter in my life. Seriously. But this butter was coming home wiht me regardless. Our entries: Shrimp and Grits (built on stone-milled grits with jumbo shrimp, spinach, seared peppers, smoked gouda and parmesan, under a Cajun cream sauce). Number two, the Sun-Fire Jerk Chicken (bone-in, braised and marinated, with fried plantains, island jerk sauce, jasmine rice, and a salsa). Lastly: The Whole Roasted Fish (Snapper this particular night, with spinach, tomatoes, citrus caper, and roasted potatoes). Each dish was spectacular. As if not enough, we still ordered dessert. Mama Made, we were told. Cheesecake and a Chocolate Brownie with ice cream. I'm not going to lie here and say either were shared. Somewhere about this time I was doing math in my head of how we could come to Nerra on a weekly basis. Seriously, I was. The Chef came by the table. The Chef's Mama came by too. Our server, Andrea, did the kind of work that doesn't get talked about enough. Andrea was attentive without hovering, present without performing. Andrea should take some time to right the manual on how to take care of a table and party, cause she's a master at it. If none of this moves you, I don't think I can do more for you here. If it does, you already know you're booking a reservation in the next 30 minutes. We are absolutely going back. The only question is how often I can make that happen without rearranging our entire budget. I'm working on it.

Expect to wait 10-15 minutes for each drink, and considerably longer for appetizers or entrees. On top of that, our server forgot a drink or an item on every single visit. That might just be our luck, but it's a hard pattern to ignore. I'm no beignet expert, but Seraphine's are much closer to fried whole wheat bread dusted with powdered sugar than the light, donut-like dessert you'd hope for. Unappetizing, frankly. The beignets at Succotash are *vastly* superior. That said, there are definitely things to like. The ambiance is lovely, and the food -- once it finally arrives -- is genuinely good! If the service and timing matched the quality of food, this would be an easy place to recommend.

That's the first thing you notice--plenty of parking. I had no trouble finding a spot on two separate visits this week. Inside, it's a cozy setup with a bar, table seating, and an outdoor patio area. It has that laid-back oyster shack feel. The patio looks like it could be dog-friendly, though I didn't confirm. The place is clean, and the staff are genuinely friendly across the board--welcoming without being overbearing. Food-wise, it delivers. On my first visit, I had steamed clams and steamed Gulf shrimp. Both were phenomenal. The clams were sweet and perfectly cooked, and the shrimp was just as impressive--simple, fresh, and done right. Second visit, I went a different route and ordered a hamburger--yes, at a seafood spot. Running keto, I skipped the bun, and it turned out to be a great call. Cooked exactly to order and full of flavor, it held its own against the seafood. Whether you're coming in for oysters on the half shell, fresh seafood, or even a solid burger, this place covers it. Make sure to check the chalkboard specials--that's really where the menu shines, with daily deals that are worth the visit.

I ordered the Spicy Fra Diavolo which is a spicy tomato sauce/parmesan linguini pasta topped with calamari and shrimp. I also tried the fried seafood combination of local catfish and shrimp. The fried seafood combo was cooked to perfection. The catfish tasted fresh, without any of the fishy taste that catfish can sometimes have. The batter was crisp, while the fish stayed tender and juicy. The shrimp used for the fry were large and tasty. The pasta was the highlight of the meal, as generous heaps of shrimp and calamari paired well with the balanced flavor of the white/red sauce blend. I look forward to my next visit to Squid's. We ordered their spicy fra diavolo which was packed to the brim with calamari rings! If you don't believe me, take a look at my picture for proof. After 10 minutes of digging through the pasta, I still managed to find 10 calamari rings, lol. No complaints here though! Just surprised at how bountiful the calamari rings were for the pasta. The sauce wasn't spicy, despite the name stating so, and was sufficient to coat each strand of pasta noodle. As for our second dish, how can we NOT get fried seafood?! So, we decided to go for their combo for any two items. We were pleasantly impressed with the size of the battered catfish. It was MASSIVE! The shrimp, on the other hand, wasn't anything special. Quite small. Not really juicy. If calamari was an option for this combo, we'd definitely go for it! Seasoning was a little salty, but the breading was nice and crispy. Not burnt tasting or oily, and complimented well with the cocktail and tartar sauce. Fries were normal, but quite small in portion. For $30, I'd imagine either a little more fries if shrimps are only 6 pieces, along with a piece of catfish. Food was pretty good! I can't speak for service because I did take out, but it seemed okay. The inside was really clean and had lots of tables! Maybe I'll bring my friends the next time they come visit here.
