The electrical service in my 88-year-old apartment was normal for many years. But at the end of March, I discovered a dangerous condition. I was in the kitchen when I heard the refrigerator compressor turn at the start of a cooling cycle, and at the same time, I saw the ceiling light over the kitchen sink dim, flicker, and turn back on! That was not good. After investigating, I discovered that whenever any appliance in the apartment was turned on, the kitchen sink light would go dark, flicker, and turn back on. So I immediately tried to contact my landlord. But he didn't answer his phone or respond to any of my texts or videos. I found out later he was on vacation for 10 days somewhere in Asia and never received my messages. So I went online and completely described the apartment and the electrical symptoms to Google AI. The AI said, "The problem is likely a loose neutral connection somewhere in the wiring of the circuit that powers the kitchen light. In 1938 , it was common for one "home run" wire to leave the fuse box and hop from one device to the next. If there is a loose wire nut or a corroded screw terminal anywhere "upstream" (like in a living room outlet or a hallway switch), every time a load is applied, the voltage "leaks" as heat at the bad connection." I asked the AI if it was a fire safety hazard. The AI said, "Yes, if the kitchen light is the only one reacting, it means the heat from that high resistance is concentrated at a specific loose junction box or outlet in your walls." The AI suggested I, "Stop Using High-Power Devices: Immediately unplug the air conditioners, microwave, and toaster. Your wiring is currently being used as a heating element inside your walls. You need an electrician to trace this circuit. They will check every outlet and switch between the fuse box and that kitchen light to find the loose connection before it ignites." IGNITES!!! That would definitely be bad!. Four Aces electricians had been working for my landlord on an electrical issue that one of my neighbors had been having. So I called them and described the problem. While I was in the kitchen on the phone talking to them, the kitchen light dimmed and I heard a "snap" sound from somewhere behind me. Rick told me that normally he would put together an estimate. Give the estimate to the landlord, agree on a price, sign a contract, and then do the work, but because of the serious nature of the symptoms, he felt he should immediately send somebody to at least determine what the problem is. He told me to stop using the power and he would get an electrician to my apartment as soon as he could. Two electricians arrived: Brandon and Leonardo. Leonardo is a master, and Brandon is highly skilled. It was a pleasure to watch Leonardo analyze the problem. He really knows what he is doing. They started at the fuse box, taking measurements of the power SMUD was supplying. Then they went into the house. While they were standing in the kitchen, the light was flickering. Leonardo had Brandon remove a cover on a fuse box near the washing machine to take voltage measurements and tighten all the connections. Brandon said, "I found a loose neutral." When he tightened it, the light stopped flickering." Brandon said it wasn't completely unscrewed, but it definitely had word its way loose. The light stopped flickering. It hasn't dimmed or flickered since. The problem was solved. That fire hazard was dealt with. What Leonardo had Brandon do is a perfect example of what you need: electricians who have years and years of skill. It's not the turning of the screw that's worth the money; it's knowing which screw to turn. But they didn't stop there. Leonardo said one of the measurements he took at the main box indicated I should also call SMUD and ask them to send a technician to check SMUD's connections. When the tech arrived, he found a connection that needed to be replaced on the roof of the garage. Somehow Leonardo knew that. I can't recommend Four Ace Electricians highly enough! They were great! My friend and I together have owned two older mobile homes a while. I called them about electrical current leaking into the wall of my house. They sent someone out (charging a $99 dispatch fee they claim is industry standard which no other electrician has charged in addition to $450 to diagnose the issue) who looked at the closest light/switch but determined that the issue was possibly not right there, so he would need to go into the attic to look. He said it was too hot (it was noonish on a day with a high around 80) to do it then, so he would come out two days later. That let them charge me another $450 (they waived the $99 dispathc fee. How generous!). They were still not able to determine from where the electrical current was leaking, so I was told that the ENTIRE HOUSE would need to be rewired. (it is an old house with old wiring that probably needs to be rewired at some point, but that's not even close to the only solution to an issue at a specific point.) To make matters worse, they never even gave me an estimate to do the rewiring. I paid $999 in exchange for literally nothing. read more

We have wired-in smoke alarms, and one of them was failing and needed to be replaced. They responded to my Yelp request within minutes, and visited on-site about an hour later. I initially planned on just having one alarm replaced, but was up-sold into replacing every alarm in the house (except for one, which appears to have been replaced by a previous owner). I understood the need for it, and that it would save me money in the long run by not needing another replacement for 10 more years. The electricians were friendly and explained in great detail what was happening and what made the most sense for my financial situation. After leaving to acquire the new alarms, one returned and spent the next couple hours installing and testing them. They did exactly what we agreed to, I'm thankful for the largely hassle-free experience. If I need more electrical work done in the future, I wouldn't be against giving them another call - they gave me their magnet with their contact info. read more

I asked for an estimate to replace my existing outside electric panel. The panel currently is 200 amp. After speaking with the tech that showed me what needed to be done just to swap out the panel with a newer one. I felt pretty good about this contractor. Until I got there estimate what a surprise $6k+.I immediately declined. I thought $3800 from another contractor was to high for needed to be done. I'm not a electrician, but I do consider myself knowledgeable and can most any handyman type work. This company must be out of there minds to charge this much monies for needled to be done. Even if permits are required and cost $600. SMUD doesn't charge to come out to turn power off and on after panel swap is Completed. I'm still shocked. would not recommend just on the estimate for what needed to be done. read more

They were fast at fixing our issue. Very nice tech. They helped us right away. Only thing I didn't care about was the packages just to get the problem diagnosed. It was confusing to me. And not sure why you just can't have someone diagnose from the box this price, nope it's not in the box so move to the next thing it could be and start at 1 price and just keep going until it's found. We paid for the big diagnostic because it would be more to go from package to package. And if I went with my gut that it was the main breaker we could have saved some money. There were some areas of the house that the electricity no longer worked. We paid a previous electrician to troubleshoot and attempt to repair it. After two trips out and $1,000 later, he couldn't fix it as it needed to be rewired from the panel and he doesn't do that. Really? So I contacted Four Ace Electrical Services... He took pictures and notes about what he saw and what needed to be done and they came back a few days later and rewired 3 new circuits from the panel to the kitchen, garbage disposal and the bathroom. If I could give this company 10 stars I would. The recent storm knocked our power out on a Tuesday evening. Wednesday night comes and SMUD finally shows up only to tell us that our main breaker outside is completely broken--something that can happen with really old breakers like ours (midtown house fom the 1940's). Well we're now 24 hours without power and SMUD says nothing can happen until you get an electrician, then a permit and then an inspection. Well this company worked endlessly for us, truly they were emailing/messaging us early in the morning and late at night giving updates and gathering more info to make this happen quickly. Eventually, on Thursday night after 48 hours without power they let us know that the city can't do an inspection until Monday. This was devastating news as our house was 50 degrees inside and Covid kind of limits where we could safely stay for the weekend. Early Friday morning they message us that they got a same day inspection and will be over in 30 minutes. Poor Leo and his colleague are out in the cold and rain waiting for SMUD to show up for over an hour. Eventually SMUD shows up and they both Zoom with the city inspector and within 15 minutes we finally had power. The price was not fun but that had nothing to do with the company as replacing a main breaker will always be expensive regardless of who you call. Bernadette and Leo truly saved us and we are so deeply grateful for the time and energy they put into our situation. In 2011 Leo did an excellent job of wiring outside lights and outlets for or back yard. We recently had to have Four Ace out to fix a problem caused by a break in the wiring on a neutral line. The problem left us with no power in both of our bathrooms and parts of our kitchen. It was an emergency and Four Ace came the next morning. It took a while to find and repair, but in the process they found a few items done by another contractor that did not meet code. Leo showed them to me and repaired them also. At all times, the electricians wore masks, gloves, and shoe covers to protect us and themselves from COVID 19 transmisson. Did an excellent job wiring all rooms with Cat6 cable at a very reasonable price. I supplied all the parts. I just paid for labor which was $400. That was for 3 people and they were there about 3 hours. Totally worth it to me. It would have taken me days because the main hub for all wires was a cramped/small space that required cutting through sheet rock to run the wires. It was not an easy job. They do charge a credit card use fee 5% ($20). read more

After purchasing a voucher on Angie's list , we hired this company to come out and uninstall some lights on the front of our house and install new ones, in addition, we needed an outlet to be adjusted as it was a bit crooked and not very pleasant to look at.
