Stopped here for fish and chips as I heard they were good here. And while it was ok, I wouldn't necessarily come back here for them. The portion was generous but the fish had no seasoning whatsoever so overall crispy but bland. Five fingers of fish topped a serving of what tasted like frozen fries that spent too long in the fryer. The tartar sauce was tasty clearly home made with bits of Cornish on and capers, as was the coleslaw, also lacking seasoning. Both were served in dishes to look like more but were grossly impractical. So how did I come up with a rating of four stars? The answer was dessert and for this I would return. Although pricey, the multi-layer chocolate cake was worth the money. Moist cake with a ganache frosting along with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and caramel. I would have liked some raspberry to cut some of the sweetness but it was no less delicious. Decor is a bit worn out. Staff is nice and amenable. It is generally not very accessible as there were only two tables that don't require them bringing out a ramp if you want to sit inside and they are near the entrance to the kitchen. read more

After the sudden loss of my beloved dog, I recently decided to try eating out for the first time in years. I didn't want to cook, I didn't really want to be home, and I also didn't want to leave my other dog home alone by herself. This is one of the few restaurants that is dog friendly, so I was excited to be able to being my baby with me to try it out. The atmosphere on the patio was lovely, and the servers were all so kind. One even brought my dog a little bowl of water, which I really appreciated. I didn't personally find many of the menu items particularly appealing to me, but I ended up debating between the salmon Gruyère sandwich, fish and chips, and the burger. I went with the salmon Gruyère, hoping it would be a healthier and higher protein given that it was made with salmon. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed to pay a premium price of $21 for a salmon Gruyère sandwich that had barely any salmon at all. The sandwich was essentially bread and cheese with some flakes of salmon, which was not at all what I expected for the price or from a sandwich where salmon is the main ingredient. The side salad was delicious, though. I was so disappointed with the sandwich that I decided not to order dessert, even though I had planned on trying the lemon meringue since it had such great reviews from what I read online. I actually ended up stopping at a taco food truck on my way home because I was still hungry and felt unsatisfied with my meal. Maybe I should have ordered the burger or the fish and chips, and perhaps my experience would have been different. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I'm not sure I'll be back. Not much flavor. Braised Short Rib - 8.8/10. The parsnip puree was good. The mushroom sauce was the best part. The sauce was delicious and contained multiple types of mushrooms which were cooked perfectly. The short ribs were good but not the top 3 or 5 best I have ever had. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as pleasant today, but it's still such a relaxing place to visit. The rain held off till we finished, so that was good. One item I was hoping for was not on the menu, but there were other choices. I chose the crabcake special, and was not a huge fan of that. It's not something I'd order again as I found the crabcake small and dry. Even with the tartar sauce, which was left off and had to be requested, didn't help the dryness. The beet salad was very good though, so I'd order that again in a heartbeat. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal of Jerk Chicken Wings and a Margherita Flatbread. Our family and extended family went there recently. We were 9 people in total. Highly disappointing! Our waitress bordered on rude and was slow and fairly inattentive. I suppose this because of the size of our party.. she was already guaranteed a 20% tip. We paid over $30 for chicken nachos with sour cream, jalapeños and guacamole. The nachos were very nasty and dry. My husband ordered a sausage flat bread pizza. He said it tasted like feet ... I tasted it and I agreed. My sister-in-law's margarita flat bread was a tasteless, garlic nightmare. My father-in-laws ham sandwich on a baguette was beyond dry. 3 of us ordered fish and chips. The fish and chips had literally no seasoning and were absolutely screaming for salt. We dropped several hundred dollars at this place b/c everything is way over priced! Our server was attentive and friendly (the name on our receipt is Andrea so I believe it was her!). The food and drinks were all amazing - cocktails, calamari, mushroom soup, meatloaf, and the blackened tuna (pictured). We also enjoyed the bourbon butter cake, vanilla ice cream, and coffees to top off the night which was perfect. I've been taking my family to Four Dogs Tavern for 20+ years now and while service is typically kind of slow out here in the country, the food and drink have always been solid and worth the wait. Today, the food is just pretty okay and the service level is still the same. The bar area while quaint, can still be very loud as well. My wife loved to go to the tavern on a cold day to enjoy some of their delicious warm fondue while seated by the fire. Unfortunately, we recently visited to find that the fondue is no longer on the menu(?). I found it odd that the chef removed it because this was something they were known for locally(?). The tavern once served up two kinds of fondue with several accompaniments offered, then pared it down to one - now it's just "none" (after getting us addicted over all these years)! This, after taking my favorite crab nachos off the menu a few years ago as well. While most of the food is still fairly good it's hard to get my wife to go back after they discontinued the fondue and there is not much else on the existing appetizer menu we now like either. The Octopus is good but just seems out of place here. The wings are good, but everybody has wings. Dunno, maybe the menu will change soon for the better but until then we "may?" be back. read more

Every time I'm in the area, I always make sure to stop at Four Dogs. I went there every year to kick off summer break from college, as it was on the way home from UD (go blue hens!), and it was always the best treat. Aside from its sentimental value to me, their food and ambiance are stellar. I always try to eat outside if the weather is nice, as their patio is adorable. The outdoor seating area has a great ambience and my fiancé and I really enjoyed the low-key atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food was a bit overpriced, and the flatbread was tasty, but not super filling. The staff wasn't unkind, but they seemed a bit stressed/overwhelmed, so they were not as attentive as they could have been if there were a few more people working. Overall, we had a good experience and the crème brûlée was absolutely incredible. Indeed I myself wish I had four dogs, I believe it would be a fulfilling experience and would teach me about motherhood, albeit in a canine format. We were seated in the room with a fireplace. The decor was quaint and the fireplace added a touch of warmth. As we ate our appetizers the room we were in became crowded and the acoustics terrible. We needed to shout to each other to be heard. The only saving grace was the food. I had the ceasor salad with a side of salmon. By the time I completed eating my dinner, the noise and the heat in the dining room became unbearable. That's when I asked for the bill to pay. We used to really love this place for the great service and yummy food, but our experience was so poor the last time and the response from management so lackluster, we won't ever return. I had ONE bite of a $21 sandwich. I told the server I didn't enjoy it and he did nothing. As a longtime former server in NYC fine-dining, this was the opposite of hospitality. When I reached out to management, they provided only lip service about the high quality of their food and service. When someone takes one bite of food, pays full price, and leaves hungry - there's a problem from top to bottom. Even Shake Shack has better management and service than this. Such a shame. read more

Here's the menu description: "Turkey Burger - Maple Bacon, Dijonnaise, Whole Grain Bread" ($22). What I got: A small piece of pita (ungrilled), with the thinnest, most flavorless turkey patty on top, on top of which was somel VERY tired and wilted Greek salad. The server had said the salad ( Ihad assumed a side salad, I did not want fries) was on top but said nothing about the rest. No bacon (maple or otherwise), No dijonaise, no whole grain bread. I keep going back because I love the quaint town of Marshalltown and the atmosphere on the patio. The patio has a feeling of sitting in an English garden. It's peaceful and relaxing. The service is always spot on. Very friendly staff. The food is just OK. It's good enough that I've tried it three times in hope to find a fantastic dish, but haven't yet. The Rudest Manager We've Ever Encountered After a fun day of tubing--something we do annually--we decided to stop by for food and drinks as usual. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a hostess who already had an unpleasant attitude. There were 12 of us, and our server, Kerry, showed visible signs of annoyance through her body language. She informed us the bill could only be split between four credit cards, which we were completely fine with. When the check came, we organized our items into four separate groups based on who ordered what, ensuring each group paid for their own food and drinks. However, Kerry suddenly told us the bill had to be split into four equal parts--something that was not communicated at the beginning. Naturally, we felt this was unfair, since some people had ordered far more than others. We asked to speak with the manager, Mark, whose approach was shockingly unprofessional. His attitude and body language were downright hostile. He outright refused to split the bill as we had requested. We explained we were more than willing to pay--just not in equal parts since it didn't reflect what each group ordered. Instead of working with us to resolve the situation, he pulled out his phone and called the police, falsely claiming we were refusing to pay. (The police never even showed up.) To avoid further escalation, we ended up walking to the nearest ATM to withdraw enough cash to cover the bill, despite the unnecessary hassle. When we told him we would be leaving reviews about our experience, he flat-out said he didn't care about reviews. In all honesty, this type of behavior has no place in the hospitality industry. We were respectful and tried to work toward a reasonable solution, but the management made it abundantly clear they weren't interested in customer service. We won't be returning--and neither will the many people we share this experience with. read more

The waitress was very unfriendly. I ordered a paloma and I rarely ever send drinks back before so I was very hesitant but I tried the paloma and it was way too strong and just straight tequila. So I asked if I could send it back and the waitress was like yeah sure no problem and offered me a different drink. I ordered the Hot cider and it was really good! The chocolate cake was also really decadent and rich. When the bill came the paloma was still on the bill after asking if I could send it back so I brought it up and was told just because I don't like a drink it can't come off the bill. I thought that was really unusual since most restaurants are okay with it if you don't drink it and they'll bring you a different drink. So I was just shocked after I asked if I could send it back and the waitress said it was no problem. So happy I finally got to try Four Dogs Tavern! The outdoor space is just so charming. Even while waiting for a table, you can enjoy a drink and the atmosphere outside. For our appetizers, we got the charcuterie board and blackened chicken nachos which were both amazing. The highlight to me was the charcuterie board, which featured grilled bread, blue cheese, parmesan crisps, what I'm assuming was gruyere?, fig jam, a selection of cured meats, olives & baby pickles. I kind of got full from the appetizers, but for our entrees, we split the french dip sandwich and the fish tacos. The fish tacos were "make them yourself" which was a little overwhelming. Thank goodness for outdoor seating because that's the only way that I will dine at a restaurant currently. We were visiting with friends and this was their first time visiting Four Dogs as well. They are new to the area so we were glad to help them give it a try. It was quite busy on Saturday afternoon but the wait for a table was only about 15 minutes. We were seated outside under a very large tent. The server was a nice young man that was very efficient and helpful. Everything that we had was absolutely delicious. I ordered the mushroom soup and a side of the brussels sprouts - which I enjoyed thoroughly. I also shared some warm, rustic walnut-raisin bread with date butter. Let me tell you...I would come back just for that freakin' bread. It's that good. Others at the table had a gluten-free flatbread option and French onion soup. We also had cocktails! Two of us had delicious whiskey seasonal bevs and the others had hot apple cider and something else with gin (I think). Overall this was an excellent experience from start to finish. My only "criticism" is that the menu does not do the food justice. It's very hard to make a decision because some of the descriptions of the food could be a little bit more elaborate (to help figure out what to order). It's true we paid a bit less at some other places--but I'm tired of paying for mediocre food. Here you pay a fair price and get quality ingredients that are well prepared. This out of the way rustic inn has some great food and drink! You can also bring your dog to the outside patio (if it behaves). The chef routinely updates the menu with new items and everything is always very fresh. One of our favorites on a chilly Fall day is the fondue! The burger and NC BBQ pork sandwich are awesome as is the humongous Reuben! Sadly, one of the local favorites, the Lump Blue Crab Nachos and Beef Chili have been taken off the menu (management-please reconsider putting them back on!).
