I wouldn't take our furry family members anywhere but to Dr. Sur and Jen. They are the most outstanding vet team I have ever worked with and trust them implicitly. I am in the unique position that I have worked with both Dr. Steve who owned Four Paws before Dr. Sur and Jen took it over and with them as well, so I hope the following is helpful to prospective clients. When I first moved to Bend, I wanted a holistically-minded vet for my senior dog Beaker. Like so many people, I had little success finding a vet that wouldn't push a lot of invasive interventions, meds, and procedures and would take the time to really get to know my dog and listen. Then, I stumbled upon Dr. Steve and, for the first time, felt like I had hit the vet lottery. He cared for my sweet boy for four years (all the way until the end of his life) and I couldn't have been more grateful. When I knew Dr. Steve would be retiring soon and we got a second young dog, Doug, I took him to see Dr. Sur. Lightning struck twice. She was everything I had hoped for in a vet; attentive, supportive, caring, integrative, and vastly knowledgable. And then, Dr. Sur and Jen took over Dr. Steve's practice when he retired and I couldn't have been more thrilled. I found Dr. Sur because I was looking for a vet who could provide a holistic approach, as well as use Western medicine when needed. Dr. Sur has been amazing. Our puppy had Giardia when we brought her home and Dr. Sur took the time to explain all my options and let me choose how to treat it. When our pup broke her foot, Dr. Sur was really helpful in helping to treat the whole dog, including acupuncture for her nervous system and herbal remedies alongside the pain meds. Dr. Sur is kind, gentle, and knowledgeable. What sets her apart from past vets I've seen, is her ability to look at the root cause of some issues my dog was having and suggest better food and herbs to treat her kidney issue. I appreciate a holistic view on health for myself and was looking for a practitioner who could treat my dog in the same way. We love Dr Sur. We adopted a new dog from Street Dog Heroes. She came from Afghanistan. As you can imagine she is very skittish. Dr Sur and Jen were so kind and loving to her. I brought my German Shepherd Dog into Four Paws Wellness Center for a well-care visit, basically a canine physical examination. This was my first visit to Dr. Steve Blauvelt's practice. My dog usually gets frightened when we visit a veterinary office. Dr. Steve was great with her. He immediately got down on the floor with her, petted her gently and spoke softly to her. She responded by kissing him on the face. He then offered her a treat which she accepted. Rarely does she accept a treat from a stranger. Lady, my dog, soon became relaxed as Dr. Steve began the examination. I was really impressed by Dr. Steve's manner with my dog. I was also impressed that he took his time to learn about her. Dr. Steve and his staff are, by far, amazing. There are so many things I sincerely appreciate every single time I need to go into their office. But most is that they treat my chihuahua Zeus and I, with such kindness and support. We have been getting acupuncture for Zeus for close to 2 months now, which has worked wonders. My first visit with Dr. Steve was pleasant, yet he merely consulted with me and looked at my mixed breed dog from across the room as we talked about a possible skin condition he had. I informed Dr. Steve that my dog was fearful of strangers and might react, so Dr. Steve didn't even exam him or look at his skin.. that should have puzzled me, but I trusted him as he sent me away with an oil and a Chinese herb, which did nothing. My next visit was easy as I wanted my two female mixes to get a nail trim. $75 later, they were done. Next was my fearful dog for a nail trim, and since Dr. Steve didn't get even close to my dog prior, his assistant and receptionist (a two-person office) told me to drop him off and leave him and he'd be fine and if needed, they would muzzle and sedate him, and I said I could assist, but the receptionist said "no need". 10 minutes after leaving there, I get a call saying to pick up my dog, that they weren't able to do a nail trim due to his fear aggression. DUH! I could have assisted, with that knowledge, as I told them, and they were clueless how to handle a fearful dog. I left sad and disappointed, and I asked for a referral and was given NONE. I called the first vet with good reviews online and they handled my boy without issue, wondering why I felt he was so fear-aggressive, as they handled him with ease, professionalism and care, and let me be there to assist. WHEW! What a difference, so glad I found the other local, competent vet in town, and there are many others to go to if you have a scared dog. Would not recommend this vet ever. read more

Dr. Steven Blauvelt has been working wonders for our 21 year old cat. He has been doing acupuncture to help her arthritic legs and she is responding great to it. He has also been helping with an on going UTI that he is helping us monitor and prevent through herbal remedies and the acupuncture treatments. Having a cat live to 21 yrs old is no easy feat, and I would not trust my baby with just anyone. Dr. Blauvelt is knowledgeable and trust worthy. So glad we found him. read more

I've had 2 visits with Dr. Steve regarding skin hermangio sarcoma tumors on my beagle's groin. This type of cancer is very dangerous and aggressive it if ever gets internal. They had been removed before but a couple came back 2 years after surgery. The herbs and diet he recommended on the 1st visit worked well and the tumors disappeared a year ago. Then they came back in January and we were very concerned. On this visit, he recommended surgery with a specialist who is VERY expensive. Since we are retired on a fixed income I wanted to talk with him on the phone to see if he felt the surgery required was so technical that we had no other option than to use this specialist or if another vet we really like might be able to do it (for far less money). We didn't want to compromise our dog's health, and would spend the extra money if he felt there was no other option. So, it was an important conversation. He never bothered to call back. I called a couple days later and the receptionist told me he said in his notes that this other vet would be fine, but his first choice was the specialist. I had to call THEM to get this information. I was so disappointed in the level of service that I called back and spoke with his old office manager, who was filling in and told her how unhappy I was with the service. She said she would contact Dr. Steve about my concerns. He couldn't be bothered to call me and I never heard from him! Wow, this vet is very expensive - $75 a visit. I would have thought the severity of this surgery would have at least warranted a phone call! Very disappointing. I will not be going back, nor will I ever recommend this vet! I'm using Riverside Vet Hospital instead. read more
