Can you say rip off. A spay on a female pit was double the estimate when it came time to pick our family member up. Excuse: she weighed over 61 pounds, so there was more fat. Estimate $659.00. Cost $1200.00. If you go in ahead of time, get dog weighed, inspected, get the estimate, you don't expect it to be double!!! Merry Christmas to them. It has been three years now since my dog died of cancer. Maybe I'm finally ready to share what Tony Oddo did to us. Apologies for not sharing sooner. I fear I could have prevented harm to others had I spoken up. Better late than never. Tony Oddo should not be permitted to provide medical care to any living creature. I will only tell my most painful story. I'll leave out second-hand stories from family and friends of three other dogs who Tony had an even more active role in murdering. I will leave out my cat's infection after a pointless biopsy, or when Dr. Barkhurst failed to identify my dogs bad knees (I think they took x-rays of her hips instead), sending us off with a shrug and a $200 bill to pay. I brought my four-year-old Rottweiler in to see Tony Oddo. Asoka was her name. Asoka received her CGC certification before the age of one and had almost finished learning all the general requirements outlined for service dogs. She was gentle and had better manners than most humans I know. Asoka had lost her normally insatiable appetite. She hadn't been eating. I could see her bones and a bulge on her side as big as a soccer ball. Tony Oddo gave her a check up and told me she is fine. Seriously, this is what he said. "She's fine." "It's a phase." "Everything seems normal." I made the mistake of telling him I looked up her symptoms online. This angered him, as (in his mind) pet owners aren't supposed to try to be vets. I recall sitting on the floor in their back room with Asoka and crying. I pleaded with him to feel her side. He wouldn't so much as bend down. He just kept telling me she was fine. We left that day and life went on as usual for about a month. She still wouldn't eat. She was emaciated and the bulge had grown even more. I scheduled an emergency visit at UC Davis. We drove eight hours to see a real veterinarian. The real veterinarian diagnosed Asoka's cancer. Tumors (primarily three large ones) had taken over much of her organs. The cancer had spread beyond the point of possible surgery. I will never forget the way the veterinarian looked at me, disgusted by what she viewed as my negligence. I will never forget how I felt when she asked "How could you let it get this bad?." Asoka died three months later. She would have died with or without Tony Oddo's extreme negligence. I might have had much more time with her though. I have often wondered... did Tony Oddo actually fail to identify a very clear, very substantial abnormality? Or was this something else? Did he (without consent) decide to choose our fate for us? Maybe he thought he should save us what amounted to over $10,000 in vet bills. Several years earlier Tony Oddo offered us "the cheapest thing to do" when Asoka had what's called cherry eye. He either didn't know or didn't tell us the procedure he uses had a high likelihood of causing dry eye (permanent discomfort, eye drops required four times per day for the rest of the dogs life) or that most vets had stopped doing this surgery a decade ago in favor of a much better option.) Could be possibly be once again going with "the cheapest option"? Was he unaware that surgical treatment would have been possible at that point, but not if we waited and the tumors got larger? So what is my recommendation for High Desert Veterinary? I strongly recommend they be shut down and that Tony Oddo lose his license to practice. read more

I left this practice after my interaction with Dr Oddo concerning my dog's case of kennel cough during which I tried to have a discussion with him about all the medications that he was prescribing. Dr Oddo was both hostile and condescending - absolutely did not want to hear any of my questions or concerns. I took that as a bad sign - figured that someone who would be disrespectful to me would likewise be unconcerned/uncaring about my dog. I left and never went back. read more

As Rachel R. said in her review, Tony Oddo should NOT be practicing medicine on dogs. He does harm rather than help, and doesn't care or even make any effort. He is mean, narcissistic man. I went to him to find out why my 13 yr old Aussie mix was suddenly licking a lump on her leg voraciously. Oddo said that lump was nothing and he looked for fleas though I said she hasn't been in any flea area and it's mainly this lump area, not whole body itching. He said it must be allergies (after 13 years of no allergies?) and put her on steroids which she had adverse reactions to. If i'd ask questions or be averse to the med he would YELL AT ME. Two months later and still itching that lump, I went to a recommended vet and was treated respectfully, graciously, and Mia loved him. The new, excellent vet looked Mia over and said that lump is the problem, he aspirated it and found it cancerous and it needed to come out. Like I thought originally but Oddo the Dodo wouldn't address that or give me any respect in my words or thoughts (he wouldn't even let me talk). He loves to talk, refuses to listen. Her anal gland was infected and Oddo said it didn't need to be looked at (how awful could Oddo-dodo be?!). Also Dodo recommended a geriatric screening for Mia and I was quoted an estimate but it was TWICE THAT AMOUNT, nearly $1000.00. Oddo needs to gogo. He is worthless and disrespectful and apparently hates being a vet because he doesn't treat animals. He does what will make him money and doesn't care the outcome of the animal and he'll bully you all the way. Shameful. Stay clear~wish I had known. We're in good hands now and love our vet and their practice, very kind and warm and excellent care. read more

Dr. Tony Oddo, trained at UC Davis, is an excellent vet whom we have used for 17 years and counting for all of our pets. From puppyhood through end of life he and the crew have always provided top care, described well our various options, and provided personal care when we have had to say goodbye to our loved ones. We have used him for well checkups, knee surgery, cold laser joint care, infections, and end of life care. Always top notch and kindness shown throughout the organization. I am SO grateful to High Desert Veterinary for taking good care of our pup while we were on vacation in Bend from San Francisco. Our dog had developed kennel cough AND severely sliced his carpal pad 3 days before we were set to leave. Our SF vet let us know we needed to change his bandage while we were traveling and it was too sore/potentially complicated to do ourselves. HDV took us in warmly, took amazing care of our dog, and called to check on him a few days later. Without them, we might have had to cancel our trip! Just as our trusted vet of many years was retiring, my hiking companion, a six year old Catahoula mix, spun a 180 turn and ripped his CCL. Since we were "vetless", my son recommended Dr. Oddo, as he has used this clinic for years. Also, his dog had experienced a similar injury and he was extremely happy with the outcome of the surgery. I am so glad for his recommendation. We went ahead with the necessary surgery, and are very pleased with the results. Unfortunately, Apache tore the ligament on his other hind leg just as the first one was almost healed, but Dr. Oddo repaired that one, too. My buddy is now back hiking with me again, and running and playing with his dog pals. Thanks, Tony, and all of your staff, for the great care you gave my dog. We have 3 older Mastiffs and 2 cats. We moved to Bend 7 months ago and have been to both Dr. Barkhurst ( who doesn't explain very well) and Dr. Oddo ( who over explains everything). We like knowing all details of our pets care so we chose Dr. Otto. Our dogs have bone and arthritis problems and we had all previous blood tests and records transferred from out of state. Dr. Oddo recommended a few changes and we followed his recommendations. Our female has severe arthritis and has been on 3- 12 tablets of Tramadol per day as prescribed by our previous vet as needed for pain. I called at 9:20 a.m and left a detailed message requesting a refill as she has been waking up at night crying and chewing on her bed (in pain). I explained the situation and that we would like maybe a day or two worth until we could get a Rx refill. My husband followed up early that afternoon and he was told the Dr. would review charts later that afternoon. We then had to call again the next morning and go another pain filled night. We were told Dr. Otto is 'out of town at a remote location' and Dr Barkhurst refused to refill or extend the prescription. Also the receptionist told us we were 'overdosing her' because we recently started giving her 4 tablets twice a day instead of three because her pain and limping flared up. So I guess we were just supposed to 'wait until he returned next week' and let our dog suffer??? We will no longer be using High Desert. No empathy for her pain and not solution oriented. read more

Dr. Tony Oddo and his staff at High Desert are the best you'll ever find. Their professionalism and knowledge is surpassed only by their compassion for and love of animals. When I had to say goodbye to one of my beloved cats, Dr. Oddo did everything he could to make it a peaceful transition and to make me feel that letting go of my dear companion was an act of love.
