THANK YOU DR. SHAW FOR FIXING MY BROKEN LEG!! (from Tallen & his family)
    Robert B.

September 1st, 2014, Labor Day. A very terrible day for us. Tallen, our Boston Terrier puppy, was on my lap. His little hind paw slipped between a narrow channel in the lawn chair we were sitting in. He went to hop down from my lap and snap, broken tibia. Very fortunate we Bend'ites are, that there is a 24-hour emergency pet hospital here. We took him in, waited to hear the news, see the X-ray. Broken badly. Tallen stayed the night with them to be kept sedated and monitored. The on-call Vet did not have good news. He painted a very grim picture of pins and highly technical surgery. This was going to cost us at least $5,000 for the surgery alone. Needless to say, it wasn't a good night. The next day we were in to see Dr. Shaw. Here's the thing with Dr. Shaw. He's calm, in control and wise. He's seen it all, he's not new to this business. He urged us to stay optimistic and he brought in a long time friend, a veterinary surgeon to look over the X-rays. The answer came back NO SURGERY!! It was a long 6 weeks, helping Tallen and getting through it but Tallen made it, he's back as good as new! Dr. Shaw was very kind and helpful, we saw him every week. He very lovingly cared for Tallen and our family. He waved fees for us here and there to help with the expenses. This is a good man. Dr. Shaw is our vet for as long as he practices and we live within driving distance of him. Nuff said.

They are so kind and amazing care of our dogs. We've been seeing them for years (2009), since they were LaPaw!

Even though it wasn't urgent, my little guy was in discomfort and they got me in with a vet tech the very next day. I appreciated that they cared and made it a priority. When I arrived, I was greeted right away. They asked about Bagheera (my kitty) and brought him a calming pheromone blanket to cover his cat carrier while we waited. Once we were brought to the exam room, the employee laid out some cat treats for Bagheera and let him get settled. Everybody genuinely wanted him to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible. There was even a pheromone plug-in in the exam room. After a short wait, Erin and another vet tech arrived to express his glands. I've seen uneasy videos of this procedure, and he's had it done once before. It wasn't anything like that during this visit. One tech held him snug while the other was gentle and efficient. And it was done! Bagheera didn't make a peep. Everybody who interacted with me seemed like a sincere animal lover. I could tell everyone cared and enjoyed what they do. I will definitely be coming back for any future vet needs. They even treat reptiles in addition to cats and dogs. Thank you so much for taking such good care of Baggy!

I have been happy with them over the 3.5 years I have been taking my dog there. However, the last time I was in, I was unhappy in a few ways. I had told the person with whom I spoke to make the appointment that I didn't want to come in several times a year, so could we please do the annual exam and all the vaccines my dog needed at the same time? But when I got there, the tech said the appointment was for vaccines only. I was frustrated, but okay, do the two vaccines. The real pisser for me was that the tech never asked me if I wanted the 1- or 3-year rabies shot. They had given my dog the 3-year vaccine 3 years ago and I always get the 3-year one, so I was not happy bc, again, that means I have to take my dog in MORE times than I want to! Isn't it basic to ask which version of a vaccine you want OR default to the version they last gave her? Also, they kept me waiting 15 minutes past my appointment time. No big deal, but no one else was in the waiting room and no one from the business came out to tell me they were running late. I did ask past way through my wait and was not given accurate information, nor any explanation as to why they were not keeping the appointment time they had set. So, they missed on common courtesy. Lastly, the manager never called me back! Does this business even care???? I'd like to hear from the owner, but doubt I will. I'll be looking for a new vet.

1-Star Review - Lauren Thorson, DVM - Bend Veterinary Clinic…read moreVisited: Oct,29,25 | Dog: taz, Shepherd, 7 I moved to Bend specifically to follow previous vets' recommendations: steroid therapy + water therapy to rebuild muscle mass after surgery. Every prior clinic supported this plan. Dr. Thorson: * Refused to discuss or prescribe steroids for muscle rebuilding * Refused to refer for water/swim therapy * **Refused to provide neurologist referral card** despite request * Stated "I don't know you" and "I don't know if it will work" * Provided only basic pain meds and sent us home When I asked, "Don't you want to try every avenue to save him?" she said no. No written treatment plan, no diagnostics beyond a quick exam, no records released. Red flag from the start: $35 non-refundable deposit just to book--never seen at any other clinic. Disappointing for a dog who still has fight left. Seeking second opinion elsewhere. UPDATE 10/29/2025: After I CC'd the Oregon Veterinary Board in my records request, the clinic quickly provided: * Full medical records (download link) * The neurologist referral they refused in-person (541-209-6960 - Veterinary Referral Center of Central Oregon) Still disappointed in the initial dismissive care and refusal to discuss steroids or hydrotherapy, but at least we can now move forward with proper treatment. UPDATE 10/29/2025: Records finally released (after CC'ing Oregon Vet Board) confirm: * Las Vegas neurologist (Dr. Fitz, DACVIM) prescribed STEROIDS + underwater treadmill post C6-7 surgery * Bend Vet refused both, claiming "don't know if appropriate" * Taz is now WORSE: zero front limb withdrawal, new pressure sores Neurologist re-check scheduled. Thank you for the records -- but initial care was dismissive and contradicted prior specialist plan. UPDATE 10/29/2025: Records + neurologist referral (VRCCO 541-209-6960) finally provided **after CC'ing Oregon Vet Board**. Las Vegas surgeon prescribed steroids + underwater PT -- Bend Vet refused both. Taz now has neuro appt this week. Thank you for eventually complying. UPDATE 10/29/2025: After CC'ing the Oregon Vet Board, Bend Vet finally: * Sent full records * Gave neurologist referral (VRCCO 541-209-6960) Las Vegas surgeon prescribed steroids + underwater PT -- Bend Vet refused both. Taz now has neuro appt this week. Done with this clinic.

I am in the unique position that I have worked with both Dr. Steve who owned Four Paws before Dr. Sur and Jen took it over and with them as well, so I hope the following is helpful to prospective clients. When I first moved to Bend, I wanted a holistically-minded vet for my senior dog Beaker. Like so many people, I had little success finding a vet that wouldn't push a lot of invasive interventions, meds, and procedures and would take the time to really get to know my dog and listen. Then, I stumbled upon Dr. Steve and, for the first time, felt like I had hit the vet lottery. He cared for my sweet boy for four years (all the way until the end of his life) and I couldn't have been more grateful. When I knew Dr. Steve would be retiring soon and we got a second young dog, Doug, I took him to see Dr. Sur. Lightning struck twice. She was everything I had hoped for in a vet; attentive, supportive, caring, integrative, and vastly knowledgable. And then, Dr. Sur and Jen took over Dr. Steve's practice when he retired and I couldn't have been more thrilled. Doug has had the absolute best care at Four Paws and I couldn't recommend working with them more!

Highly recommend her for anyone who is looking for a kind, caring, knowledgeable vet who blends Eastern and Western approaches.
