I used to love this vet clinic but since it's changed ownership/vets I am very unhappy. I waited for 15 minutes past my appointment to be taken to a room. After the assistant did a few checks I waited another 15-30 minutes for the vet to come in. All of this was for a yearly exam and vaccinations. I loathe to think about poor cats and dogs that are sick. The vet was really great though. read more

We have used Westside since we moved here. Brian Loudis is our vet. We have a complicated dog with a history of cancer. Brian has responsive and proactive in his approach. He is knowledgeable and creative, considering different strategies as his needs evolve. It means a lot to us seeing that our dog is as happy to see him as he is to see long time friends or family. Today I believe Dr Loudis saved my beloved dog's life. She had several issues that came on quickly, and the staff were able to get her in first thing. Apparently a tick bite in Africa years ago which went sub-clinical, and re-emerged with a vengeance. After several hours of tests and treatments, I'm so grateful she's back home with me. Time will tell, but she's hydrated, regaining strength, and wagging her tail. All of the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Let me say this. I am used to have a country doctor treat me dogs with dignity, safety and care beyond the big, wellness outfits telling you, that you need to have a fecal exam and the such. Dr Shaw and his staff have told me I could save myself money by going to the north side or east side. I and my two boys live only two blocks away. I am only receiving SSB. So money is a problem. But they have taken the time to explain everything and do their best to take of my boys Lucky and Jiggy, with the most care that I trust and admire. September 1st, 2014, Labor Day. A very terrible day for us. Tallen, our Boston Terrier puppy, was on my lap. His little hind paw slipped between a narrow channel in the lawn chair we were sitting in. He went to hop down from my lap and snap, broken tibia. Very fortunate we Bend'ites are, that there is a 24-hour emergency pet hospital here. We took him in, waited to hear the news, see the X-ray. Broken badly. Tallen stayed the night with them to be kept sedated and monitored. The on-call Vet did not have good news. He painted a very grim picture of pins and highly technical surgery. This was going to cost us at least $5,000 for the surgery alone. Needless to say, it wasn't a good night. The next day we were in to see Dr. Shaw. Here's the thing with Dr. Shaw. He's calm, in control and wise. He's seen it all, he's not new to this business. He urged us to stay optimistic and he brought in a long time friend, a veterinary surgeon to look over the X-rays. The answer came back NO SURGERY!! It was a long 6 weeks, helping Tallen and getting through it but Tallen made it, he's back as good as new! Dr. Shaw was very kind and helpful, we saw him every week. He very lovingly cared for Tallen and our family. He waved fees for us here and there to help with the expenses. This is a good man. Dr. Shaw is our vet for as long as he practices and we live within driving distance of him. Nuff said. read more

I visited Dr. Shaw after my sweet little yorkie was screaming in pain for 2 days. We took her to another veterinarian and they misdiagnosed her as having stomach issues. Upon examination, Dr. Shaw at the Westside Pet Hospital quickly diagnosed her with a strain in her neck and shoulder area. Completely different! When he asked if he could put acupuncture needles in her, I was skeptical that she would sit still for him but not only was she still, she laid on my lap for 15 minutes, dozing off! He suggested some pain meds and then a second visit with aquapuncture. Well, that was all it took. Little Jelly went from screaming in pain every night to a complete recovery after that second visit and the aquapuncture! Dr. Shaw is not a people person, he's an animal person. From my experience, I much prefer that. It takes a special and very gentle kind of human to connect with animals and to sooth and heal them. I highly recommend him! read more

My two experiences with Dr. Shaw and all of his employees were wonderful:, abundant available appointments; thorough, thoughtful exams; and rapid follow-ups. I don't know if this is formally the case, but it was clear that the clinic was extremely comfortable and knowledgeable about cats, a constant worry for me. Further, Dr. Shaw makes every attempt to determine the way that you perceive your pet and your own personal philosophies with respect to traditional vs. holistic medicine, adjusting his recommendations based on your responses. My experiences with the vet techs and all of the girls at the front desk were all very good as well, icing on the cake. This review is sorrowful to write but we feel like Dr. Shaw and the entire staff at Westside Pet Hospital need to be recognized for care above and beyond. We came to Westside Pet Hospital after the vet (Deschutes Vet) we were seeing simply closed up one day - leaving us no records/information. Dr. Shaw and Laurie were very understanding about the lack of good specific medical history for our two dogs Carmela (Italian Greyhound) and Luna (Schnoodle). Throughout the last 18 months we developed a good relationship with Dr. Shaw and Laurie and always felt as though we could call upon them when we needed advice or an appointment. We liked that the office is comfortable, the techs are professional and friendly, and mostly that our dogs were comfortable being there. Dr. Shaw also utilizes eastern medicine which we saw as a benefit. We recently had to make the decision to euthanize Carmela. She was nine years old and had been diagnosed through biopsy with lung cancer after several weeks of eliminating other causes for her distinct cough. Throughout the time of initially discovering she was ill on Christmas Eve 2016 to Super Bowl Sunday 2017 when we had to put her down, Dr. Shaw and his staff not only cared for Carmela but us as well. He called to check on her after her appointments despite it being his days off. As her illness rapidly progressed from this last Saturday to Sunday, Dr. Shaw communicated, called in a prescription, and finally met us to help end her suffering. The compassion, understanding, and dedication to animals that we were shown and continue to be shown by the people at Westside Pet Hospital deserves recognition and support of the Bend community. If other Yelpers need a vet - this is the place to receive quality professional compassionate care for your pets. Giving a generous 2 star. Mostly because the receptionist was very rude and Dr. Shaw was not very personable. Was not greated in any way when we first entered the clinic. Spoke to Dr. Shaw for maybe 5 minutes who treated us like we were just another client and didn't explain what the entire procedure would entail... Just was handed an estimated (extreme prices compared to other vets) and was not informed of hardly anything. During paying for the exam, the receptionist actually slammed the clipboard down because she was so frustrated... not very great customer service. I didn't even receive a rabies tag with vaccine? Not going back . Better prices at other clinics with better care for my dog. Just tried this place out because of the great reviews. Maybe just a bad day at the clinic? But I didn't enjoy being treated like just a way for them to get money. If they would have been more personable, the prices would be worth it. My adorable little French bulldog had become paralyzed from his mid spine to his back legs. He was suffering from a congenital disorder common in this breed. Dr. Shaw treated him with acupuncture and electrodes and herbal medicine. He truly saved my precious boy's life. We truly thought there was no hope and Dr. Shaw's treatment was painless and effective in a very short period of time. I cannot thank him and his staff enough. Dr. Shaw and his staff are incredible. They really care about your pets and are very knowledgeable. My cat got a large abscess by his ear over thanksgiving break and Dr. Shaw was able to get him in. Even though it was a tough procedure and he had to have internal stitches, my cat healed quickly and you would never know it happened. Dr. Shaw told me my dog's bladder infection "was the least of her worries." He didn't offer to test her urine or prescribe antibiotics. He misdiagnosed a simple bladder infection not once but twice. This is basic, veterinarian medicine 101. I have no explanation for his inability to recognize, diagnose, and treat her bladder infections. He insisted on waiting until they were beyond severe, my dog is now permanently damaged. read more

We have been very pleased with Westside Pet Hospital since we've been taking our precious little Maltese Willow there for her annual check up, vaccinations, and teeth cleaning since 2015 (new to Bend). Dr. Shaw is great with Willow and is very knowledgeable about pet health issues. We love that he runs a teeth cleaning special every year during the month of February (National Pet Dental Health Month). During her teeth cleaning appointment, Willow had her teeth cleaned, her nails clipped, her ears cleaned, blood work, and came home with a baggy of dental treats. They took very good care of her while she was there for 7 hours. We got a call from Kiley the next day to check on Willow to see how she was doing. First, Dr. Shaw seems to be a very competent veterinarian. But my overall experience was unsatisfactory. I left feeling unappreciated as a customer and nickel & dimed to the extreme (although it was more like $20 here, $60 there). I had called a few day earlier inquiring about the cost of an exam. I was told around $60. On exam day, Dr. Shaw told me he would recommend an x-ray to rule out bone cancer. I asked how much and was told $185. Since my dog was limping and had no other obvious signs that something was wrong, I agreed to the x-ray. Then, before leaving, Dr. Shaw said he would prescribe an anti-inflammatory for my dog. I said I could get it at a pharmacy, but he said not to bother and he would save me a trip by giving it to me there in the clinic. I wrongly assumed it would be in the same price range as the pharmacy I was going to get it from (Costco). Then, as I was in the middle of checking out, the woman at the front desk answered the phone. I literally stood there with my credit card in my hand waiting over 5 minutes as she proceeded to tell a new caller all about their clinic, their location, and finding an appropriate appointment time. I smiled to myself thinking how I hate it when someone not even there gets better service than a paying customer standing right in front of her. Then came the sticker shock. I assumed around $260 ($60 exam, $185 X-rays, $15 or so for meds). It was $325. Before paying, I asked for a price breakdown. Turns out I had to pay an extra twenty something dollars to have my x-rays read. How foolish of me to think that that would have been included in the $185 fee. It would have been nice to at least let me know there would be additional charges to have them read. I mean, who would pay for x-rays and then not pay for finding out what they say. This felt very underhanded. Second, I called Costco later to find out what I would have paid with them. Turns out that I paid over three times more ($17 Costco, $55 Westside Pet Hospital). Not once was I ever offered pricing without me having to ask. Maybe most of their clientele are extremely well off and price is no object. But for me, $325 to find out my dog probably has a slight sprain seems very excessive. But I am extremely glad it is not bone cancer. I did call the clinic a few days after my visit to express my dissatisfaction specifically at the cost they charged me for the medication. Dr. Shaw did call me the next day to say he was unaware that Costco filled pet prescriptions and that next time he would let me get it there. Well, most likely there won't be a next time for me at Westside Pet Hospital. Lastly, I always wait at least a week before ever writing a negative review mainly so that I know that my emotions are not primary to its content. read more

I decided on Westside due to it's excellent Yelp reviews and I'm so glad! We were new to Bend and our Jack Russell had, what we thought was, a chronic rash on his belly, mouth and nose. Possibly Lupus. Past vets had just treated him with steroids, anti-fungals and antibiotics. Nobody had ever suggested Bowser might have a food allergy. I'll admit I was skeptical to try an expensive prescriptive food plan for him, but my husband and I decided to give it a shot and, low and behold, after a month Bowser's rash was gone and has not returned. I am a very happy dog mom and Bows is a very happy, no-longer-itchy, dog. I will also admit to finding Dr. Shaw a little dry at first and didn't feel a connection, but after a couple visits, his personality comes out and you can see that he really, truly cares about the animals he treats. Dr. Shaw is a great vet and your pet will be in good, caring hands with him. Also, his staff is wonderful and very friendly. read more

Warning! Do not trust this Vet I recently went to this vet because they advertised as a Pet Dentist. I brush my dogs teeth almost daily so I figured I needed a dentist instead of my regular Vet when my pup cracked a tooth. Here's where I was so very wrong...... My dog went in for what should have been a routine root canal. Dr Shaw does not know how to do a root canal, and instead performed a complete hack job on my poor baby. He cut in 2 inches deep, pulled the tooth, took out jaw bone and disrupted the root nerves of the surrounding teeth. My pup might now loose those perfectly healthy teeth. He did not give antibiotics or pain meds when I asked. The next day my pup was fully blown out with infection and I went to my regular vet who confirmed this was a terrible job. 2 days later a huge hole opened up in the roof of her mouth and she needed surgery to clear the infection and new stitches. I went to Shaw and he didn't own up to his wrong doing or attempt to remedy the situation. Needless to say my Vet fixed her the best they could and their stitches that were properly placed despite the tissue damage he created ,are still intact after a month. Pup still isn't healed completely but doing much better. I wish I never went to this Vet and I pray those disrupted nerves will heal and she won't loose her teeth. I am only posting this to warn people. I don't wish this to happen to anyone. read more

We can't recommend Westside Pet Hospital enough. Dr. Shaw and his staff go above and beyond to take care of your pets and make sure they are healthy and happy. When one of our little dogs was so sick he had to stay overnight at the clinic, Dr. Shaw brought him home with him so he could keep an eye on him. We are taking our dogs overseas and Dr. Shaw and his staff worked tirelessly to make sure we had the proper documentation so our dogs could travel abroad with us as a family. During a road trip, we noticed one morning that my 18 year old dog, Sulli, has blood in her urine. We contacted Westside Animal Hospital and they were able to see us on very short notice. Dr. Shaw was great with our girl. He examined her and gave her a homeopathic remedy to help with any possible internal bleeding. He suggested we keep on our road trip and just monitor her. We did! I was expecting to pay a high bill. Exact numbers are not important but with the urine test and examination, my bill was only about 40% of what I was expecting. No exaggeration! I highly recommend Westside and would make them my vet if I lived any where near Bend. read more

My dog has several chronic conditions and we've worked with over a dozen veterinarians in the past few years - eastern medicine and western medicine vets, generalists and specialists, etc. Just like human doctors, the best are the ones that treat us as equal partners - listening, discussing different options, giving us their recommendations but letting us make the decision. The not-so-great are the ones that are impatient and sometimes condescending, rush through the appointment and try to sell us a lot of procedures and products (flea, heart worm, prescription medications, etc) that our dog may or may not need. Unfortunately, Dr. Shaw fell solidly into the latter category. I especially didn't like that he declared an expensive new drug as "completely safe - the sales rep was just in here and said so" and pressured us into buying it. I've worked in drug development for over a decade - no drug is ever "completely safe" (remember Vioxx?) especially when the safety database contains only a few hundred subjects. Even worse, he prescribed double the dose that my dog needed, based on her weight. Fortunately I looked it up online and broke the pills in half - but that also meant that I bought double the number of expensive pills that were needed. His staff were very nice people and this practice is probably fine for routine vaccinations and other basic things but I wouldn't recommend it for anything more complex. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find Dr. Shaw! My shiba inu grew a tumor on the bottom of her paw out of nowhere 2 weeks after I moved to Bend. I used Yelp in hopes of finding a great vet. With so many to choose from and not having any recommendations, it was super stressful. We all know how expensive it can be to care for our furry friends with no pet insurance; and with our recent move, funds were tight. My baby also had a bad tooth. Getting both procedures done at the same time made sense but of course that meant more money too. Dr. Shaw knows his stuff and and has the right equipment (not all vets do) to do the job well. Betsy (vet's assistant) was great and helped me figure out what procedures that might suit my needs best. The prices were fair and Doc cleaned my Tipsy's teeth without charge.
