Walking into this shop reminded me of walking through the streets of Taiwan in the morning and smelling all the breakfast stands preparing these tasty treats. I'd ordered from here a while back but it's better to eat it fresh in the shop. Came here recently with a friend and we ordered quite a number of items, from their rice roll stuffed with picked vegetables, youtiao, pork floss, and egg to the pork congee, xiao long baos, turnip cakes, and egg crepes. Four Seas is a solid stop for that simple OG soymilk breakfast or if you want to try different types of traditional Chinese pastries. The seating is first come first serve and you must order at the register. The menu is pretty long, so there should be something on it for everyone. The pastries are flaky and not too sweet, and my go to is the mung bean pastry. I also enjoy getting the egg crepe, which is enough for both me and my dad...but we don't eat much. The hot soymilk hits the spot on early mornings. I've also tried the hojicha soymilk, but that really wasn't a repeat purchase for me since it was way too sweet and the hojicha flavor didn't really stand out for me. I have two qualms with the shop. With the one sizable menu being viewable right where the queue is, it's pretty easy to get purchase paralysis if you aren't familiar with the menu. There also isn't a separate area for takeout pickup so I've seen numerous times where people ask where they can pick up when the line is long, and they get directed to the end of the line. Of course, if bland food is your thing, you can totally come here, or just, bake yourself a huge pot of rice, and just, work at it... 蛋餅加玉米 Egg With Corn (2/5) It tastes like, egg, with corn. This was possibly the item would the most flavor impact of ALL items listed. 甜飯糰 Sweet Rice Roll (2/5) An outer layer of glutinous rice, followed by crushed and liquified peanut brittle, followed by a flattened Chinese donut. It's a lightly sweet item. 鹹飯糰 Salty Rice Roll (2/5) An outer layer of glutinous rice, followed by a core of shredded pork floss jerky. It pretty much tasted like it's ingredients. If you had pork floss, and glutinous rice, and you took a bite of glutinous rice, and then, followed it up with pork floss jerky, it'd perfectly recreate the taste of this dish. You might even get by with just regular white rice. 甜豆漿|熱 Sweet Soy Milk (Hot) (3/5) It tastes like liquified tofu, you have to add a ton of sugar to get that store bought taste. I think it's par for the course, doing work at a restaurant while being a patron isn't really my thing. I want all the food items to be pre-cooked, pre-sauce, pre-cut even, and ready to eat. So, that is indeed my stance, but I've had this at many other places, it tastes roughly the same; lacking sugar. 鹵汁豆腐腦 Marinated Soy Pudding (2/5) it almost tasted like a hot and sour soup, but not quite there, probably needed more white pepper and some salt and maybe a bit of heat to bring it there, and that's my issue. Came here on a Friday morning for breakfast. There were quite a bit of people eating there so I had some high expectations. We ordered the hot sweet soy milk, the marinated soy pudding, sweet rice roll, salty rice roll, egg crepe with corn and the vegetable pork bun. You order at the counter first, get a number and they bring the food to you. In general all the food was very bland. The hot soy milk had no flavor and you have to add your own sugar but it was at most lukewarm so the sugar wasn't dissolving much. The marinated soy pudding looked good with tons of toppings but once you mix it, there was barely any flavor. The soy pudding was smooth though. The sweet roll here was made with some peanut brittle, I didn't like it. I did enjoy the salty one with the pork sung. The egg crepe with corn was good but also lightly flavored. I wish I loved more of their foods but so many could just be improved if the characters wouldn't read so blocky. But you got your breakfast stables any food loving Asian would want. I'd recommend arriving and ordering earlier rather than later. As the hours pass so do the glutinous bounce in people's favorite rice rolls. The rice itself was too dry by 1:30 in the afternoon. The egg pancake could've been better, more moist and the side garlic sauce needed to be wayyyy less watered down. But you get the idea just not fulfilled. Green onion pancake was too greasy and not as flaky as it's known for. The cheap imitation of what a proper Taiwanese breakfast represent. Although one could argue this is exactly what one should expect from buying breakfast off of the side of the road in the streets of China. However, the three incompetent front of house employees are still counting 30 some pastries for a customer in front of me. Now there's a line of with a few parties behind me because these idiots lost count and need to recount the specific pastries for the customer. I usually go to Yi Mei Deli on Colima for my Taiwanese breakfast but a friend wanted to try this place out. It's in a plaza with a grocery store and other restaurants and retail spaces so the parking lot is pretty big but even on a Monday at 11 am it was really hard to find parking. I read other reviews about how the tables are never cleared off or cleaned and those reviews were 100% accurate. When we walked in, every single table was dirty and full of dishes left from the previous diners. There was only one occupied table as well. You order and pay at the counter/register and they give you a sign holder with a number in it. You then seat yourself and by the time we got our number, someone had cleaned one table for us to sit at lol The food came out fairly quickly and everything was pretty good. We got the egg crepe, radish cake, rice roll (fan tuan), and green onion pancake with egg. We also got iced soy milk as our beverages. The radish cake was really good and super crispy. 3.5 Stars. I came to Four Sea Restaurant for their Chinese breakfast of salty soy milk (dou jiang) and fried Chinese cruller (you tiao). There are two of these types of restaurants in the area and this one is a bit bigger and better, but also a bit more expensive. The food here was hit and miss. I tried the salty soy milk ($3.95) and the hot sweet soy milk ($3.35). The salty soy milk was really good and had some bits of pickled veggies, which good salty soy milk usually has. The sweet soy milk came bland and we were told to add our own sugar. After we added sugar, it tasted much better. The green onion pancakes ($5.50) were SO good! It was crispy, full of flavor, and delicious! The green onion pancakes were definitely the best food item we ordered. The marinated beef sandwich ($6.50) was okay. The sesame bread was good by but dry. The marinated beef was good, but when the sesame bread and beef were put together, it was very dry. They should add some sauce (from the marinated beef or hoisin sauce) to prevent it from being so dry. Also, they should add sliced green onions. The flavor was good, but the sandwich was so dry. The salted rice roll ($5.65) was not that good because the deep fried cruller that was inside the rice roll was old and hard to chew. It was very chewy, but should have been very soft and easy to chew. The rice and dried pork sung was fine, just didn't like the fried cruller. Overall, I really enjoyed eating at Four Sea Restaurant because I enjoy this type of food and there aren't many restaurants that serve this type of Chinese breakfast. The food was pretty good, but a few items just needed a bit of improvement. At Four Sea, you order at the counter, take a number, and they'll bring the food to your table when it's ready. They had a small Brita pitcher on the side for water, but it was empty when we were there and they took awhile to refill it. It's a very casual, self-serve restaurant. Upon entering, you order at the front counter first and they will give you a number. This is more of a self-serve place as well. You also choose where you would like to sit and they will bring the food to your table. We only saw 2 people working in the front so a lot of the tables were not cleaned or put away yet. I used to go here all the time when I worked minutes from it. This place is usually busy for a reason; it serves an authentic Taiwanese breakfast that the locals know and love. Service (2.5/5): It's not the friendliest place. It very much has that "get in and get out" feel. Last time I was here, I completely forgot all my Mandarin for some reason and the poor young man manning the register couldn't speak a lick of English, but bless his heart, he sweated through the whole exchange with me. In the past, you would have to come before 10am, otherwise the food wouldn't taste as good. Now you can come at 10:30am on the weekend, and the food is just as fresh. DRINKS ORDERED Over the years, I've tried the hot and cold versions of the Sweet Soy Milk, Salty Soy Milk (might be hot only), Peanut Rice Milk, and mixed Peanut Rice Milk w/ Soy. Prices for these drinks range from $3-4. I think they're all good, but the Peanut Rice Milk w/ Soy [Milk] is the best of both worlds. FOOD ORDERED - Salty Rice Roll ($4.90). Plain Chinese donut (youtiao) and pork sung enveloped by chewy, sticky white rice. They have either greatly reduced or removed the pickled mustard stem (zhacai) which is good for me, since I used to always pick it out. - Sweet Rice Roll ($4.90). Same thing as above, except the savory ingredients are swapped for finely crushed peanuts and sugar. Tasty! - Egg Crepe ($4.80). Chewy, tender, and thin pancake with juicy (but fully cooked) and umami scrambled egg, plus green onion. The inside is creamy, fluffy, and starchy. - Marinated Beef Sandwich ($5.65). Tender sliced beef shank with cilantro tucked into flaky Chinese sesame flatbread (shaobing). - Egg Sandwich(?). I have been eating at Four Sea since I moved to Cali in 2010. Over the years it has been my nostalgia-relieving go-to place, and it never disappoints. However, I recently went back and was somewhat disappointed. Their oven-baked bun used to be flaky and soft, well baked. Now it's just think and hard, with no texture. The egg crepe's crepe is also bland and stiff. They both tasted like these are factory-premade stuff that are just heated by staff who knows nothing about how to cook them. Starting with the good, the Sweet Rice Roll (fan tuan) was my favorite. It was delicious and perfectly sweet and savory. Maybe my favorite fan tuan I've ever had? However, the Gao Bao was a little disappointing. It could have been fattier and was just a bit too dry. Otherwise, the flavor was still good. The most disappointing dish was the Cold Sesame Noodles. They were bland and came ready-made with a small container of (bland) chili oil and garlic water (literally garlic soaked in water). Obviously, they didn't do much to improve the flavor. Overall, the experience was inconsistent. Some items were good, others fell short. If the menu was more consistent, I could see myself coming back for my Taiwanese breakfast cravings.
