Phoenix is honestly such a classic and is nostalgic to me. It's been around for several years and it's like the Cantonese version of fast food/diner. Not sure where they get all the hate from but speaking for their desserts, I feel like their desserts are consistently good. I ordered the assorted mochies and the mango pomelo sago pudding. Both weren't too sweet. Their mochis each had different filling, from red bean, to mango and sesame. The mango pomelo sago pudding tasted fresh and you can really taste the pomelo. There was a hair or some strand of fabric on my roll though, so that was definitely concerning since all of the other boutiques are always clean and unproblematic. The total was $16.10 before tip, so it's definitely a high-end dessert for the working class person like me. This place has been a staple for me for the past decade, and I'm honestly surprised it's taken me this long to write a review. Up until around 2020, the food was consistently amazing -- fresh, flavorful, and reliable. I ate here weekly. I used to recommend it to everyone and would come here regularly for takeout. However, like many restaurants, something shifted after COVID. Whether it's due to changes in staffing, ingredients, or operations, it just hasn't been quite the same since. That said, I still decided to give them another shot recently when I saw they were offering a weekday special -- the ABC Combo -- which looked like a great value. Here's where things got frustrating: in order to access the combo discount, you *must* order through their app. Not through a third-party platform, not by calling in, and not even by walking in. Just the app. Unfortunately, their app is not user-friendly at all -- it's clunky, hard to navigate, and glitchy. It made the ordering process more stressful than it needed to be, especially when you're just trying to grab a quick bite. I also ordered a taro coconut dessert, which I love. However, I noticed it was priced *\$1 cheaper* in-store than it was on the app. When I asked the woman working about the price difference, she explained that in-store and app discounts are separate. That didn't really make sense to me -- especially since this is a takeout-only place. It feels a bit disjointed to offer different pricing depending on how you order, particularly when you're being forced to use the app for specific deals. It's only $1 and $1 in 2025 is nothing, but it's the principle as a business. Terrible service. I ordered online and paid through Toast and had my mom pick up the food from this place. The cashier threw the pen and the receipt at my mom when she went to pick up the food. The cashier also tried to make my mom sign the receipt, which is illegal because I paid under MY card, not her card. The worker insisted that my mom had to sign the receipt for my card or else she wouldn't give us the food. The worker claimed that Toast would not pay them the money if my mom didn't sign, which shouldn't be true because I have ordered numerous times from other restaurants and shops, and they never ask me for a signature (Google says that Toast does not require a signature). Additionally, Toast says that the payment never gets handed to them, but goes directly to the restaurant, so I have to directly contact the resturant for the refund. I had already paid my money online, sent my order number and online receipt to my mom for confirmation, and the worker would not give us the food. My mom left the restaurant without the food. I later called in and asked the lady, but she refused to talk to me in English. Later, speaking in Chinese, I explained the situation and asked for an explanation and refund. The same lady started yelling and talking over me on the phone. Needless to say, although long-term customers (over 10 years) of this place, we will NEVER come here again after experiencing this type of treatment. read more

Phoenix used to be an old standby when I lived in LA and I hadn't been in years, but I just went last week and it's still as good as I remember. I ordered over the phone and got my order exactly right. As I entered, the inside is clean and organized and you can browse the pre-made drinks and appetizers sitting in the glass cases and refrigerators. The servers were quick to say hello and check on my order. We ordered the Salt and Pepper Squid and Spicy Seafood Udon. It's just as delicious as it has always been. The Salt and Pepper Squid was crispy and had a good mix of flat pieces and tentacles. The portion was pretty generous and I love the green peppers they added for that extra kick. The Spicy Seafood Udon was always my favorite and it still is. It's ACTUALLY spicy so I can only take a couple bites before switching to the squid. I love it this way. The umami flavor is a flavor explosion and they give generous amounts of shrimp, squid and even fish. The noodles were still bouncy and al dente and all the proteins were cooked through and not rubbery. On Colima, there are 3 Phoenix locations - this location, the one in Yes Plaza, and the last at the corner of Colima/Hanover. We have visited other locations in the SGV as well. Love the Hong Kong style food and desserts, that are not really served anywhere else. The other day, I wanted to order desserts from a dim sum restaurant in Monterey Park but they no longer make them! So our first thought was to go to Phoenix for them. The cost is a bit on the pricey side but there is no other place that makes fresh Hong Kong style desserts. Their food is also very delicious, from what we recall. Service was as to be expected, but otherwise was attentive and I was able to purchase and be on my way within a few minutes. Prior to the pandemic, I remember I used to meet up with my friends here at Phoenix and it is still comfort food for us all.
