This bakery has become very popular. Had to wait in line for fifteen minutes. My order was boxed and taped. I was shorted a ham and cheese croissant. Such a bummer to be shorted when such an ordeal and so expensive..6 pastries, one coffee and a loaf of bread costing $47. read more

My cat asked me to write this review. She relays that the bergamot date tarragon orange tart, that is like a fancy lemon bar not only because of its triangular shape, was delicious. Or in her words, "It was my meow." As her owner, I might not have had any idea what she was talking about, after finding only the crust left on the table, but cat-breath-germs-be-dashed, I still dared to take a bite of the dregs. "There are no dregs when baked goods are involved," she purred, encouragingly. And if this is the last review I pen due to some cat-borne illness, then at least you'll have two votes for the quality and allure of their pastries. Granted, she did not so much as sniff the Valrhona *where does that h go?* chocolate tarte, which means she, at least, will live to see another day. And as to be expected, it was rich and delicious, but by the time you read this, it may be a thing of the past since the menu changes frequently. Don't fret. Anything with chocolate here is good (including the chocolatines aka pains au chocolat). But what my cat doesn't know about Fournee is that the first thing I ever ate here, two and a half years ago after giving birth to my oldest son and effectively replacing her/demoting her, naturally leading to a series of vengeful acts for the years that followed, the likes of which you can surely surmise from this post, was ACTUALLY the lemon mousseline. A yellow orb, nestled yolk-like in the middle of a praline cake, I think I swooned. I also will never forget the Myers for being the ones to bring it to me in my postpartum haze. Thanks guys. The Bread Garden, which set the stage for Fournee after decades of baked goods in the Elmwood part of Berkeley, ultimately had to shut down because of the next door competition from Peet's coffee and their newly expanding food and pastry offerings. It doesn't look like Fournee is at any risk of being one-upped by the generic croissants (rubbery looking) that Peet's sells, but don't make the wrong choice. This is the only time I will say anything mildly nonsupportive of Peet's (because I'm a Berkeley peetnik loyalist, even now that they've gone and globalized): get your coffee at Peet's and your eats at Fournee. Of course, Fournee sells out of everything they make, with or without you, me, and my cat, so it may not be your fault if you do end up buying that knockoff pastry out of necessity. But if you are in the area, and in time to grab one of their creations before the 10 people in line behind you do, don't hesitate. Just swipe it. read more

The line out of the door and around the corner, regardless of time of day, speaks for itself. This is the best bakery in the east bay making french pastries. You can find all of the classics along with cookies, tarts and even a small selection of sandwiches and flatbread based pizza. I remember the first time I walked into the bakery and the smell took me back to the bakeries of the culinary institute I attended. They did not disappoint and Ive been a regular customer since. My only criticism would be in their static selection. As someone who frequents the shop it would be nice to be surprised by new offerings other than a seasonal scone or fruit pastry. read more

SO. GOOD. Every single pastry is so buttery and fluffy, it's amazing. My boyfriend and I came here on a Sunday morning (around 8:40 or so) and there was no line! It was amazing. We got: 1) goat cheese sun dried tomato croissant: goat cheese-sundried tomato filling with sunflower seeds on the top--my boyfriend loved this one the most. 2) ham and manchego croissant: a little skimpy on the filling but honestly this was heavenly. This was my favorite out of our picks. 3) seasonal cardamom quince pastry: also really good--I like the sweetness from the quince and the cardamom wasn't overpowering either. 4) ham and egg croissant: honestly this is a pretty pastry to look at (just see all the pics) but we weren't big fans of this one. It was hard to eat and mediocre in our opinion. Overall, the croissants are amazing. You have to get one when you go (any variation...I've tried the almond croissant before too and I am obsessed with it). What makes them so great is how flaky they are (serious layers peeling away) all the while being super buttery! My mouth is watering just typing this all out. Service is great and attentive as well--everyone who helped us were super friendly! Parking can definitely be hard because it's on a very small street but look on streets that are close by and you won't have a problem finding a spot and taking a short walk to the bakery. read more

So disappointed! Now, don't get me wrong, I love the pastries here. The almond croissant is the best on the planet. But after 3 years of weekly runs to get my morning almond croissant, today they stopped making them! Why?, I asked. A shrug! When will you make them again? A shrug! This rating is for their croissant. Their sweet offerings might be closer to 3.5 stars, a couple of savory offerings are 4-4.5. But the croissants have shatteringly crisp exteriors and the insides are the perfect, slightly moist, airy, yeasty goodness with the little bit of stretch and good chew and perfect salt level. Don't get coffee here, but get the croissants!!! read more

Skip the sandwiches. I know this is a popular bakery with some really good options but this is about sandwiches. Specifically, today I had their "vegetable sandwich." For $8, I got a section of skinnier-than-usual baguette with a thin layer of eggplant. Period. If there was anything else on it, I neither saw nor tasted it. Definitely not worth $8! read more

After reading the reviews for Fournée, I knew I had to give it a try! While my first visit was abbreviated, my second trip gave me a greater sense of the bakery. I could tell that it's a popular spot given the size of the lines (and how much some of the people on line were excited that it was open), but the staff move through the orders efficiently. I've tried the ham and egg croissant, and though it did not blow me away as I expected, I appreciated the flaky crust and meticulous way it is constructed. Their almond croissant was top-notch, and I also enjoyed their mousseline and noisette. Came on Sunday morning and there was a line out the door! Luckily, it only took about 10-15 min to get through. I was worried a lot of the items would be sold out since it was 10am, but they were fully stocked! I bought 2 ham and egg croissants, 1 savory croissant (it had yam, caramelized onions, walnuts and goat cheese), and 1 current scone. Everything was absolutely mouth watering-ly delicious!!!!!!!!! I must say...this is now probably my favorite bakery of all the Bay Area!! Do yourself a favor and make a trip over here. It's worth it!! read more

A couple of weeks ago, I had an errand in the neighborhood, so decided to give this place a try. I got the Paris Brest--and have thought about how delicious it was literally every day since! Fournée was wonderful on the phone with me. I (of course) waited last minute to purchase a cake for my boyfriend's birthday, but when I called at opening time- I was able to pay for my items on the call and pick the cake up later after I got out of class in the afternoon. Made the whole process a lot easier for me. I got a beautifully made trifle cake. Three layers of delicious, spongy white cake with light, sweet icing and laced with what I believe to be cumquat fruit mixed into a light crumble topping. Everyone loved the cake. And while I expected it to be fruitier over all, even the people who tried it who aren't "sweet toothed" were in love with the perfect balance of richness within the frosting layers. I definitely recommend this place for cakes. I will have to go back and try more things on the menu, I look forward to the day! Just a tip- I was told you can only request orders two days in advance so prepare if you have something particular in mind. read more

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place. It's a hidden gem. I can't eat croissants anymore because I just think that I'll wait until I get one at Fournee. Their chocolate almond croissant, their almond croissant, they're chocolate croissant, and their croissant are.. just.. so. Special. No words. I used to LOVE their ham and egg croissant but recently they put some sort of breading on it? Not a fan. On Fridays they have duck fat dinner rolls that are just. So. Special. Yeah I seem to have a super limited vocabulary describing this place. I got a cake for a birthday. That came was amazing too. And everything is so worth it. In some ways, Fournee prevents me from having insane sugar intranet because I just won't eat other desserts anymore since I know it will be better at Fournee. I haven't tried much else, to be honest, because every time I come, I just want what I got last time. So it's slow going exploring the menu. read more

HEAVEN. Seriously, if real heaven doesn't have a Fournee Bakery, I'm gonna be kinda disappointed. There's not much I need to expound upon here. Look at the photos! If you like delicious things made of mostly butter, you will be thrilled to stumble upon this tiny little closet of a bakery near the Claremont hotel. We ordered like 8 things because it all looked too promising: seasonal berry scone, cheese & chive gougere, savory tomato & goat cheese croissant, lemon moussaline tart, and a chocolate almond croissant. Not only were they are delicious works of art, but they were not crazy expensive. For example, the cheese rolls at Pasta Shop are 2.99. The cheese rolls here (which looked even more decadent) are $2.75. I notice these things. They have drip coffee (no espresso) and lunch menu items, too. Peets is right next door, so Iots of smart folks do a latte stop at Peet's + pastry stop at Fournee, and enjoy at one of the outdoor benches or tables. Like I said, Heaven. read more

Review #195 - 2016 I've had this place bookmarked for several months, but it's only a 10-minute drive from my house yet I still can't seem to make it out this way before they close. I'm so glad that I finally made the effort to drive out here because I really enjoyed their pastries. I'm actually not even a scones fan because they're usually too hard & dry at most places, but not here. I tried both their fruit scone and walnut coriander scone and both were equally tasty. I bought 4 of the ham & egg croissants and 4 of the ham & manchego croissants as well; they were delicious! Very hearty and filling. Definitely great for breakfast. Now, I have to go get more because my family love them both and they can't decide which they like better than the other. For dessert, I couldn't take my eyes off of their TCHO chocolate salted caramel tart and their valrhona chocolate mousse. Anyone who knows me has to know how much I love salted caramel and tart, but when you put the two together...well, that's just simply irresistible. The chocolate mousse was great as well. Both items were super rich & chocolatey good! Both cashiers, Logan and another woman, were super sweet, quick and helpful. By far the highest quality pastries in The United States. I love Tartine in SF, but this place is even much better than that. Their pain au chocolate is authentic, and after living in Paris I'm an incredibly harsh critic. Buttery flakes of goodness with high quality (not burnt) chocolate oozing out. All of the ingredients are high quality (like Tcho chocolate) fresh, and all the parties and breads are handmade. My boyfriend is a big fan of the ham and egg croissant, which is huge! I love their morning buns, pain au chocolat, and usually the seasonal pastry. I've never tried their tarts or éclairs, but they look beyond incredible. There's usually a line, but they're efficient and it moves very quickly. You order at the front and then wait by the dessert case to be handed your order. It's always a relatively quick process, with such a friendly staff. There's not much seating (just a couple tables outside) so we generally bring our pastries home. But the neighborhood is adorable, and I highly recommend checking out the little shops. read more

Hands down BEST East bay bakery. I especially recommend their Christmas stolen which is about as good as it gets without your Nana baking it in your own kitchen. I haven't been inside the bakery which took over the Bread Garden. My friend gave me a box of their pastries. She was a Bread Garden regular and mentioned that Fournee's selection is limited and they were sold out of several items. * Currant scone ($3): dense, sweet, harder crust with softer interior, lots of little currants, very nice * Almond frangipane croissant ($2.75): The best thing I tried, the croissant was cut in half with more crunchy almonds in the middle. The croissant had many thin, buttery layers with wonderful nutty and sweet notes and a dusting of powdered sugar on top. *Small brioche: I'm not sure what this pastry was called but the dough was similar to a brioche, light, airy with some walnuts, bit of rosemary, good but a little dry * Gougere: small, empty (hollow) on inside, like cream puff but savory with a bit of rosemary, softer on the inside, slightly cheesy The items I tried were made with skill in the classic French way. read more

I decided to check out Fournée after seeing rave reviews of their croissants and scones on the Y-Diggity. I came around noon on a Sunday and the selection for a girl who doesn't like chocolate was seriously lacking, but that's probably due to the time of day and maybe even the day itself. Anyway, I was lucky enough to find a Walnut Coriander scone that was pretty good in terms of taste and a Cheese Roll that was equally satisfying. The cheese roll was a little tough in texture and the scone was also somewhat dry and dense, but the flavor was there and left me relatively satisfied. The taste was enough to make me feel like they know what they're doing and I could probably find more delicious digs on a day that the selection is better suited to my own tastes. The gal at the counter was very sweet and engaging, doling out compliments and appearing to be genuinely interested in interacting with customers. I felt appreciated and valued, which makes all the difference. She provided a great first impression and made me more enthusiastic about returning to Fournée later, which says a lot about their customer service. Go girl! Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the selection during my visit but still had that lingering feeling that on another visit I could find something worthwhile for myself. Holy moly this bakery is amazing! The other day I was exploring the Claremont neighborhood when I wandered into Fournée. The smell of freshly baked bread alone is enough to lure you in from a block away. Seriously, it's that good! My friend from France was coming over for dinner that evening, so it was the perfect opportunity to buy a baguette and a few mini tarts. Needless to say everything was a hit! According to my friend, the dessert is just as delicious as what you purchase in France. Aside from being delicious they are also beautifully decorated. I would commute from Marin in a heartbeat to purchase more treats for a special occasion. read more

Oh...Em....Ghee This is by far one of the best bakeries I've ever been to in my life. Not in the Bay. Best bakeries, period. Better than that delicious French one in the city, better than semifreddi's and Achme. It's right up there with cheese board. But what differs it from Cheese Board is their French style Breads and pastries. We are talking about complete originality here. Everything is handmade. Everything is made by scratch, every bread, every dessert, every pastry. And the ingredients are high quality, they make everything right there in front of you to some level, you can literally see the ingredients. This is a very honest business that produces high-quality food. And let's not forget the fact that, with all due respect, this place is cheap. I mean it's affordable. It's affordable luxury foreign delicious desserts. And anybody could get one, in some cases for $2. And I won't even get into the fact of how delicious their coffee is. Their ham and egg croissant is so frreaking good i want one just writing this review. I even bought one to go because it was so delicious--so did my friend. I also tried their lemon praline mousseline and the salted caramel tart. The lemon praline was just ok. The salted caramel tart was better. I wish I had more room that day to try their other baked stuff. I just have to come back whenever I'm in Berkeley. Metered parking on the streets. Not too bad to find. They take credit cards. I've tried a few of things from here and they've all been amazing! The croissants and morning buns.. the lamination on them is to die for. The morning buns are crispy, flaky, and light. I haven't have morning buns like these before and it's the first time I really enjoyed one. The croissants reminded me of some I ate in Europe and I'd eat one for breakfast every day if I could. I'm jealous of those who live within walking distance. I also really enjoyed the ham & cheese sandwich. I truly don't understand what all the fuss is about. This is no Tartine or Vive la Tart, which are hands down the best. I was excited to try as it was during the week and was getting a Peets next door. I ordered a pain croissant, almond croissant, manchego and ham and the special veg croissant. The outside was really flaky, of the plain but the inside seemed stale and not layered as expected. The almond croissant was odd with a crusty top of almond paste. Pastry was stale and Non nearly as layered as I've had stale. The filling of the cheese and ham and veg were good, but I didn't finish any of them. Maybe it was a bad day, but really forgettable. Four years on, and this place is still one of the best on the planet. The croissants have eclipsed many others in the Bay Area, including La Farine's, and the miche is absolutely world class -- great crumb, great flavor, and beautiful crust. I'm so grateful this bakery is in my neighborhood and I can visit whenever the cravings arise. read more
