Fox & Hounds was my go-to spot when I lived in Bloomington, though I don't think the person who did my hair is there anymore. But I got a chance to go back last month to prepare for a wedding and we had a great experience! There was a private room in the back where we were able to set up snacks and bring our own mimosa ingredients. We could lounge and hang out between appointments. They were super organized in getting us through on time and we were done earlier than anticipated. I had my makeup done - airbrushing, I think it's called. The person who did my makeup was great. She warned me everytime she had to burst some air around my face and when she was going to be near my eyes. Everyone here was super friendly and helpful. Sam even let me take home my nail file and buffer because they don't reuse them- this is something that SHOULD be done everywhere, but isn't. I am so grateful that after having some pretty awful experiences at other salons that left my nails in extremely poor condition, I FINALLY found the RIGHT fit! I've been there 2x in last month or so. The first time was for a manicure, second time pedicure. Beautiful building inside and out, staff very very friendly. Was very disappointed in both services though. Manicure was done professionally and sat there maybe 20 minutes for it to dry. I went home, got ready for bed, and woke up with blanket marks on my fingers. Most recently had pedicure and the gal was very professional and did a great job except she didn't let the polish dry. She immediately sent me home. I was up probably 2 hours before going to bed. When I woke up again head blanket marks on my toes. I just feel for what you pay, that that should not happen. I will say when I had my mani, I watched them clean the chair from head rest all the way down. Very impressed with that. I've NEVER seen that done at any place I've previously been. read more

My husband and I booked a couple's massage for our long weekend near gatlinburg. We easily booked over the phone with a minimal deposit. We were able to walk to the shop from downtown Gatlinburg (about 5 min) We were greeted with a warm welcome by our hosts in a lovely, quaint shop. The decor was inviting, the space spotless but welcoming. Our therapists were professional, talented, and thorough. They took the time to explain the process and address any expectations/issues we had or wanted to address. Our 1 hour massage included hot stones, warm massage oil, aromatherapy (scent of our choice) and warm towels. I've been coming here off and on for various services over the years. They've done some remodeling but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have had a positive impact. Went for a massage and while it certainly wasn't the best one I've ever had it was just okay. There is a heavy focus on adding additional services once you are there. And the other reviews are accurate that you will hear a lot of noise during your massage. What really disappointed me today was the attitude of the staff. It took a good five minutes for anyone to say hello to me when I arrived and when someone did finally speak to me, it seemed like she was doing me a favor. As I was waiting another staff member walked by and pretty much looked me up and down in a very rude way, as though she didn't approve of what I had on, which was nice jeans and a casual top. Overall I left today feeling like this place thinks just a little too highly of itself and it was a huge turn off. Will not be returning. read more

I recently moved to St. Louis, but find myself continuing to drive to Bloomington-Normal to get my hair cut and colored by Tatjana. She is fantastic. I am always happy with my hair, both the cut and the color. Not only is she extremely talented, she is always really nice. I also highly recommend Darlene for manicures and pedicures. My nails always look great and they last a long time. She is always very patient with my indecisiveness too, I usually change my mind about what color I want a good three or four times. Having just moved to town, I visited F&H for the first time for a Brazilian wax. Right off, the receptionist greeted me with genuine warmth, offering me a drink and settling me in with the paperwork. Jessica, my esthetician, could not have been better. She provided a numbing spray, which helped tremendously, and she also used hard wax, which, in my experience, is the least painful method, much less painful than soft wax with strips or sugaring. We had a great conversation, which is important, because anything that keeps your mind off things is a great help. She made me feel more comfortable than I have ever felt with a new esthetician. Not impressed at all. First haircut was not good at all. I felt like a frumpy 12 year old ugly girl. I was suppose to get a hair reccommendation at the end of my hair cut and if I didn't I would get a discount.. didn't get either. Even though I asked. I had originally booked a hair color but Bc of the bad 1st service I called back to cxl. I was asked to give them a second try, I said yes. I believe in second chances. The hair cut was good with Shannon. But the service from everyone else was NOT. There was no "special feeling or treatment" I was asked about my experience by friends and when I told them what happened they were surprised since fox and hounds is supposed to be the "posh" place in town. I've been coming here for about 3 years now and I'm just as happy with them, specifically my stylist Tara, as can be. She's a true professional -I've only had one cut that I didn't absolutely love, and I went back and she was great, and generous, about fixing it. She's also super friendly without talking your ear off. In fact, if you are someone who doesn't like awkward conversation with relative strangers, she is the best. Some visits, we barely speak a word. Other times, when I feel more chatty, we'll chat for a bit, and she's perfectly friendly and fun. I've recommended her to several friends who are now regulars of hers, too. I love Fox and Hounds, love their downtown space, their involvement in the community, their reasonable prices and quality goods, but I especially love Tara. Highly recommend! I had the best massage lady here - Penny. Blind (so less insecurities about being naked with a stranger rubbing you with oil), but the strongest hands ever. Most massuses (sp) never use enough pressure for me, but she was wonderful. Did not talk the whole time, either. I detest it when you're trying to relax and someone wants to just chat for an hour. Pfffft. BUT, I know Penny recently went somewhere else in BN to do massages, so track her down. Dynamite lady. I have not tried many other services here, but the place is always busy. I did have my eyebrows waxed, and I had red streaks where the chick put the waxed strips on my face for a week. My stylist, Samantha, was really polite and actually re-did my hair 3 times to show me my options and recommend what would look the best. She really took her time, and I got so many compliments throughout the night! :) She was really busy and still, the quality was there...she was really easy to talk to, which makes for a less awkward hour of sitting there. The reason I'm taking 1 star off: while I was getting my hair done, there was another stylist talking out loud in front of me and some other people who were getting their hair done, about her customers and how much they tip her and the products they buy...it was really unprofessional. I understand that as stylists, they probably do talk about who is cheap with tips and which clients tip well, but they should probably save those conversations for when new customers aren't in direct ear shot. read more

I get my nails done here and my hair done someplace else. All of their nail techs are great, you can't go wrong. Where you can go wrong is when they schedule you with one of the hair stylists that also do nails - they are not as professional. Ask for one of the dedicated techs (Darlene, Stephanie, Marissa, and a couple others) They have good massage chairs, a great polish selection, and everything has always been clean. I got my hair cut and colored once when I first moved to the area and was not impressed; the stylist was 20 and from a nearby podunk town, and my highlights ended up looking, um, not stylish. I booked appointments for pedicures for my friend and I last week. The staff was helpful by most standards but they were not interested in really being enthusiastic about your presence or questions. We had good pedicures. I cannot complain about the cleanliness, technique or ambience. My negatives were the bathroom was overflowing and smelled terrible. So bad we had to hold our breath while going to the bathroom. We complained at the front desk - they gave us the impression that this is a frequent concern. The bathroom was not the cleanest bathroom I have been in. The other issue I have is I called and booked an appointment over the phone, the same issue stands if you book through their website. They do not indicate the price differences. I was billed $12 different then my friend because she had a Level 3 Pedicure person and I had a Level 1. Never at any point while online booking the appointment or calling to change/confirm the appointment was this made clear nor was it even indicated as something they do. Several family members and friends of mine frequent this establishment as well. Personally I've had a facial, mani / pedi and just about every hair service imaginable here. (Not a perm...do people still get perms?) One of the things that I love about the salon is they really want to make you happy. Not sure who to choose for your service? Give them a call and ask. Not sure if you can pull off that cut, color, style? They will let you know their opinion. It's like having kind but honest friends who will help you look your best. I had a pregnancy message last week to use up some of my left over gift certificate monies. I had Kaci and have to say she's a really good masseuse. She actually had a bed that is made for pregnancy massages, not like the previous massage I had where I had to lay on pillows awkwardly. The reason I only gave 3 stars is because the front desk staff is still a little off. The petite blond is not the best...she started to check me in and then just left me in limbo as she turned to help another customer...and I just stood there, 8 months pregnant, waiting to be told to have a seat or that I was checked in...or anything really...instead of just dead silence and no eye contact. The other front desk girl looked over and asked me if I had been taken care of and I said, "I don't know." I just sat down and figured they'd figure it out instead of having to stand another 10 minutes to be asked if I'd been taken care of. Sheesh. I now live 1100 miles from Fox and Hounds, but still go there to get my hair cut/colored whenever I'm in town. I've not found anyone that can work with my curly hair as well as Ken can. He's awesome and very honest about what will work for you. I've been a few other places before that they give me a cut that doesn't really fit with the amount of time I want to spend on my hair in a day. I also highly recommend Natalie. Went there because I had a gift card and needed a haircut. The girl I go assigned to was young so I thought she'd relate to me more as I'm 22. Totally wrong. I asked for what I thought was a simple bob and got my hair thinned out and chopped all the same length. I got an old lady haircut which is a total bummer, now I have to wait and let it grow out until I can get it cut again by someone who doesn't solely cut 50+ year old women hair. Super lame. I have found an excellent pedicure technician, Stephanie. Since I started with Stephanie I have had less problems with terribly my painful ingrown toenails. Stephanie really takes the time to know her clients & their needs. Thanks to Stephanie I am walking without pain. I went in for a pregnancy massage here since the website said they offered them. I'm still fairly new to the area so I called to see if they still did them. The girl on the phone was really nice and I specifically asked if they had the pregnancy bed where I could lay down on my stomach. She said they did and I requested that. When I got to the Studio it was a neat older atmosphere. The floors were wooden so they were really squeaky. You could hear people talking outside of the rooms (for me it's not a big deal since I have kids at home), but for some people looking for a really relaxing massage this isn't your place. You hear people walking around, doors closing, people talking, kids chatting, etc. The massage bed was warm so that was nice. The masseuse Amber was very nice and did a great job. The problem I had was that I didn't get the pregnancy bed, so I started out on my back (which was great for the neck/head massage) but then I was told to lay on my right side and then my left. I did get a pillow to put between my knees that went to my ankles but I felt duped from my massage because I was not able to lay down on my stomach with the bed that would accommodate that. I didn't realize until after I was already half way into the massage that I wasn't going to be flipping over but simply laying on the side. Which was the whole reason I didn't choose other locations for a pregnancy massage. So if you don't mind the distractions and don't mind not getting what you've requested then this is your place. If you're expecting a quiet, relaxing atmosphere and if you're pregnant and want the pregnancy bed then I would suggest going somewhere else or ensure before laying down that you're getting what you expect. Would I go back? Maybe for a hair cut but not another massage. read more

I've never heard anything but great things about this place, so I decided to try it out for a massage and facial for my birthday. The massage was okay-nothing bad or special. However, my facial was the worst I've ever gotten. There was no extraction, no exfoliation. She basically washed my face and then put a mask on, washed it off, and put another on. She left them on so long that I feel asleep, but that still wasn't enough to fill the whole hour and it was only a 45 min facial rather than 60. It wasn't very expensive, so I guess you get what you pay for, I was just disappointed in their spa services and won't be back. read more

Even though I'm a new customer, I got exactly the time I requested and even though I had to deal with all the new customer paperwork that comes with a massage, I was on the table within a reasonable time.
