Now that we're almost Itascanites, we had to start checking out some places in our new 'hood. Fox and Turtle (which is probably walking distance from our new digs...if you're not lazy, that is.) is going to definitely be a regular stop. At least for lunch. Here's why: 1. The skirt steak sandwich is freaking incredible. Seriously. There is delicious medium-medium rare skirt steak, caramelized onions and mushrooms, blue cheese, and some tasty garlicky sauce that they throw on top of the arugula that made me even like the plants on my meat. Amazing. (We also got a french dip, which was good, but it was nothing compared to the goodness of the skirt steak sandwich). The fries are hand-cut and perfectly cooked too with just the right amount of salt. Yum. 2. The service was good (although we were there right as they opened and no one was there yet). I've heard horror stories about the dinner service there so we were glad to have that going for us. 3. The restaurant looks cool as hell. There's a very cool rustic/industrial/but classy vibe going on there and you have a nice view of the golf course to boot. 4. There is a small brewery when you walk in that is not open yet (Itasca Brewing Company...you let me know when you are open!!!) but the list and tappers that were written on were all awesome local taps. This will be a gem (for craft beer drinkers) once it opens and could definitely be a good waiting or beer dessert stop as you are coming or going. 5. Speaking of beer, Fox and Turtle actually has a decent list too. Not a million crafts you probably haven't tried, but a craft list nonetheless. Overall, I was pretty impressed with this place. I can see it being rough if you are there during a busy time because it all (including the staff) seems very new and perhaps unable to handle a rush, but at off peak times it is awesome. At least if you are eating the steak...we'll see how the spicy mac and cheese is next. Keep you posted! read more

This is on the lower level of a clubhouse for Itasca country club. Waze takes you to an apartment complex south of the train tracks; put in the corner of orchard and elm (or orchard and walnut) for an easier time of finding the parking lot. It is a casual, relaxes, spacious, restaurant. Family friendly but targeted at adults. Reservations via Open Table or phone (We would not have needed them Sunday night).Great beer list and full bar. Service was terrific on a Sunday evening. Good menu with several fish entrees, steak, chicken, but also burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, desserts. Working through my bookmarks the best that I can. Finally made it over here. Went on a Friday evening. This place was packed but we were able to snag a booth. Ordered grilled calamari, fish tacos, a salad with shrimp + avocado, a filet special, and their "Mile-high meatloaf". FYI:This place is incredibly noisy inside. They really don't have any elements to dampen the noise so conversation can be difficult. I wanted to try the Itasca chicken but was told by the waitress that it took 40 minutes. They should put that on their menu because had I of known this I could have ordered it at the same time as we ordered our drinks and appetizers. On to the food.......It was all disappointing. The fish in the fish tacos was cooked to oblivion. The calamari was basically swimming in balsamic so it became a one note item. The fillet was supposed to come with gnocchi but it didn't. It was more like spaetzle and I was told that the sauce tasted like tomato soup. I had the misfortune of ordering the meatloaf since I couldn't get the chicken. It was not good. Nowhere near a mile high. It was a slab of meatloaf plopped on some potatoes with some dried onion things on top. It had bacon on it. Here is the thing. The bacon was almost raw in one place and was also burnt black on the same piece. Now I owned a restaurant and I would go ballistic if I caught a cook sending that out of the kitchen no matter how busy they may have been. I called the waitress over and showed her. I told her to take it back to the kitchen and show the cook because there is no excuse for sending that out to a customer. I don't know if she did but a manager came over to apologize and offer to replace it or give our table a desert but I just wanted out at that point, so I passed on both. He did take it off of the bill. So many good reviews of this place and I wonder what went wrong. A new cook? Kitchen turnover? People evidently like it as based on the positive reviews. I can only share my experience, didn't want to turn it into a rant. I wanted to like this place so much but ........... maybe I will work up the courage to try it again and give them a mulligan for my first time. Cheers to all read more

I really have to update my review. This place rocks, so much so that we are thinking of joining Itasca CC and we already belong to a CC closer to home? We have been here with our friends that belong to the Club and OMG the food here is off the charts for the price. Their pulled pork nachos, the Itasca chicken and the seabass are all delish. Presentation is lovely and huge ass portions. Tons of sandwich options including an awesome skirt steak with arugala, mushrooms, cheese on a great soft roll. Home cut fries (ask them to cook them light). Great atmosphere, kinda clubby but industrial too. They have an ice skating rink outside of the restaurant! Hello, how cool is that? They also have bocce ball! Again, how cool is that. I love the vibe of this place, the food and the staff. Last time we were here with our friends our waiter was Patrick Kane look alike and he was so nice and helpful about the food. Golf course is beautiful and they have added platform tennis and are redoing the pool deck. Well, hello summertime! You can join the club at different levels and for the price, this place is a screaming deal! Plus, I had NO idea how damn cute downtown Itasca was. Winner winner! read more

Had no idea this restaurant/bar was in the basement of the Itasca Country Club. My friend and I had a late lunch on a rainy Sunday. Have a good selection of wine, beer and cocktails. Menu plenty to choose from, I actually had the French Onion soup and the Cobb Salad. I finished everything, and the salad was huge. Waitress was attentive and had a good sense of humor. On the night of the party the weather was perfect and we were set up on the patio. The food and service was excellent, especially Patrice. I've been a loyal customer of the Fox and Turtle. I'm a member at the country club for 15 years. So I'm disappointed that I have to leave this review. It's a Tuesday. The restaurant is not busy. Ample servers. I order the daily Tuesday special... chicken. I've had it before. Pretty good. After waiting 30 minutes and searching for the wait staff, I'm told it will be a few more minutes. My server, who is always great, apologizes for the length of time. She genuinely feels bad. I wait another 5 minutes and cancel the order. Tuesday, not busy, the daily special, nada. This should not happen. Also, last Saturday I dined on the patio with my wife. When the food came to the table the server basically threw the meal on to the table and walked away. We spoke with our waitress about it who spoke with a manager who came by and apologized. I appreciate that. Should not happen. I'm hoping that the service improves as we exit the pandemic. Great patio for dining. Edit.....upgraded to 3 stars. Went back for lunch today. Eat at the bar. Everything was perfect. Bartender Johnny was great as always. Paul checked on my a number of times. The Fox and Turtle has it all! A great rustic and modern dining room with a diverse menu. The food is great, from the appetizers to the main courses. I would specifically recommend the burgers. I'm not sure how they do it, but the burgers are always juicer than ever. PLUS, the menu is amazingly affordable. If you're in the mood for chicken, get the Itasca Chicken and split it between two people, it's a great dish to share and enjoy. Lastly, looking for a quiet brunch spot? They crush their omelettes and breakfast too! They have Nutella fresh toast! The staff is always friendly and willing to work with food allergies. They even have a very robust GF menu. All-in-all, I love this place and it is great for young professionals, families, or more matures. The club is beautiful and the food is equally as satisfying. Try it out! We have been there several times since finding out it was a public restaurant and not members only and couldn't be happier about it! The food is amazing! Service is great. I'm not sure what the people encountered that gave it such a low rating but so far every meal we had was fantastic and so did my wife and mother in law. Been to Chicago twice.... Been to Fox & Turtle twice. First time by happenstance, second time on purpose. Very nice ambiance, great food and service. It is on the grounds of a country club and when driving by I actually had to call because I was thinking it was a membership type establishment. But it is fully open to the public. My friend is a member here so we met her here on a Sunday morning for brunch. However we learned quickly that only 3 items are left for brunch from the brunch' used to be ' menu. But that was ok because there were so many other delicious options. The restaurant is really really nice! Open, airy and very modern wood décor, gives it a great vibe and view, with one entire long wall, all windows overlooking the beautiful green golf course. If I I'm ever in need of a party room, I'm definitely booking this place. Overall good experience. The food was awesome, and my company was even better. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. I really hope management reads these things. So I have been here at least 5 times. It's very convenient, and the place is comfortably tucked away and cozy. It's also cute enough to feel like I'm on a date, so there's that. I'll just state this up front: the service is garbage. THREE times servers have 1. not checked up on us, 2. had us wait over 30 minutes for food, and 3. ignored empty drinks. Tonight, my boyfriend and I waited 45 minutes for dinner. The server blamed the kitchen. I know that game; I was a server for 10 years at various renowned restaurants. I know BS when I hear it. Frankly, the apathy is astounding. They comped dessert, which was pretty terrible in itself. Can you comp my wasted time? That brings me to the food! Love the onion rings. (Why have then gotten smaller, F&T? WHY!). I order salad, which luckily, they haven't sunk so low as to mess up, and my bf orders ribs... which are either the best he's ever hard, or total garbage--where is the food consistency?? The fries taste like the freezer they came from. How hard are fried potatoes. I mean, really. No, I want an answer. I'll wait. Seriously, F&T. What are you doing? Can you take some pride in yourself? The service is absolutely inexcusable, and the food... well, TGIFriday's is at least more reliable than you. read more

**UPDATE** On coming back, the place was just as good as before! I had the crab cake salad and the rest of the table had the half off Itasca chicken. Everything was fresh and delicious. This place remains a gem** When we sat down, our server told us that the food was amazing, that of course he would say that, but that really, everyone says it's amazing. After the meal, we really had to agree with him. I wouldn't have thought to look to a country club for such a quality meal, but with a little help from Yelp, we decided to try it out. We arrived pretty late and I'm pretty sure the three of us were the only customers still at the restaurant, so they led us to a booth and made sure we had everything we wanted. We ordered sliders, a burger, and a chicken club sandwich. They took a little while to come out, but with such a good playlist jamming away as we talked, passing the time was easy. When the food did come, we were pretty amazed. The portions were very generous and everything looked fantastic. The burger was rare (as I had ordered), the chicken juicy, and the sliders flavorful. The sides of fries were well seasoned and fresh, and really, everything was great. In the end, we were extremely happy to find such a good place open late and exactly where we needed it to be. Wow!! This place is incredible! It has a gorgeous outside patio right on a rolling green golf course. The outside ambience is beautiful and tranquil. The eggplant salad is probably one of the best salads I've ever had. It's layers of crispy eggplant with fresh mozzarella and tomato on a bed of lightly dressed lemony arugula..unbelievable. Had dinner at Fox & Turtle tonight with my 85-year-old father who is spry and 100 percent but likes things the way he likes them. From tasting the coffee to little ice in the soft drink to no ice in the water and so it goes. Dontrail did not flinch!!! From the reviews I had high expectations for this place but it was just ok. We arrived and had a reservation but we probably didn't need one as it wasn't crazy busy. They have a cool little brewery when you walk in but we went straight to our table. It has a pub feel but also like an empty hall like feel to it. We were seated at a round table which is a plus because my father in law loves that. There were 4 adults and a baby. We ordered drinks- we all got wine except my husband got an old fashioned which he said wasn't very good and was watered down. My husband and I are gluten free and they have a pretty extensive gluten free menu which we loved and is part of the reason we came here. I ordered steak tacos and they were good, my husband ordered the Mexican burger I believe and he liked it. My in laws enjoyed their food too but we weren't wowed. We ordered the Brussels sprout appetizer and I liked it but wished they were not so soggy and more on the crispy side. This place is a little far from us so we won't be rushing back but will probably go back again at some point. At the end of our meal our waitress was difficult to track down for the check. read more

Five stars for the ambience and review. Very modern interior with chic wood tables. Service was also great - our waiter/bartender was delightful. The view here will be even better when it's spring/summer, though they do limit people on the patio to 2 hours when it's nice out so others can enjoy it. This place is situated in the Itasca Country Club - hidden behind the business district of Itasca, but on the Itasca Country Club. You do not have to be member of the Club to go here. The food was great (though the salsa in the chips and salsa appetizer was not my favorite). The meatloaf was amazing, as was the eggplant salad, and the chicken club. All very tasty - and the homemade french fries were very good. We also had the chicken gumbo and it was so flavorful! If you are into prime rib, they have prime rib on Saturdays as a special (and during the rest of the week, a prime rib sandwich). They had a good list of beers on tap too (and the Itasca Brewery is in the entrance on your way in to this place). A very cool hidden gem. Will definitely be back! My family and I went to Fox and Turtle for an early Sunday dinner. Nice aesthetic and unique for the area. There weren't very many people dining in while we were there but our waitress seemed a bit overwhelmed. She was slow to take our order and didn't check in as often as we would have liked. Also despite there being not very many people, there was a group that was extremely loud. Definitely not a plus, but they were at a lower volume enough of the time that we didn't complain. The food was great. 3/5 from our group got burgers which were well cooked. 1/5 got the salmon which was well seasoned although the rice could have been better. I got the chicken club sandwich which was enormous! Barely was able to take a bite without something falling out of the sandwich. The fries are A++++ and would highly recommend. read more

This place is terrible! I've eaten here a few times but I find the food to be mediocre and prices are high. Wait staff is always slow and rude. Recently we walked in and waited over 15min to be seated when the place was empty. We got acknowledged only after another customer told them we were waiting. Once seated, we were ignored by several staff members walking by and waited another 15min before a waiter came to take our drink order, mind you not even water was served in this time. We had a baptism celebration at Fox and Turtle and everything about it was amazing. The service was great and all the servers were so nice. There wasn't an empty glass for more than 30 seconds it seemed. The food was fantastic and everyone complimented it - the event menu options were delicious and reasonably priced compared to other similar venues. The room we were in overlooked the fountain and greenery and it was the perfect size for our party of 25. It was also a great location in downtown Itasca. The staff was great around kids and was nice enough to cut the cake we brought and package it up at the end. They also packaged up leftovers for one of our guests who couldn't make it on time. My favorite thing we ate was the flatbread with pesto - I could've eaten a whole tray. The chicken club sandwich and pasta were great and it was nice that the event menu came with dessert too - a lot of menus don't have dessert included. We were hurrying out to the church and gathering our stuff in a commotion and everyone was really accommodating about that. Overall seamless experience! read more

It was my first visit to Fox & Turtle, and it was great. While the Yelp description said you'd get a good view of the golf course (which is correct), I didn't see anything that said it's actually the restaurant at the Itasca Golf Club. (Me and my friend both thought GPS was off when we arrived to the restaurant.) It's near downtown Itasca and the train station but quiet enough to be away from the noise. Every staff member who served you or passed by was so helpful. That have a unique concept about a bar/restaurant - rather "bars." When you enter downstairs, you find a craft beer bar serving varieties and flights. There is a second bar further in the restaurant. They do have a wonderful patio area...and if it gets cold, they can usually find you a table inside. There's a good selection of food for a variety of tastes and preferences. Our waitress (forget her name) had an incredible smile and was beyond accommodating. I'll definitely be back. read more
