Francesco has made a comeback to Coral Gables and my wife and I decided to book a reservation for our wedding anniversary. Francesco started as a well known ceviche restaurants in Lima Peru which is known for their great culinary experiences. The interior of the restaurant is very elegant and homey located next door to the Miracle Mile Actor's Playhouse. The menu here is traditional Peruvian menu with a gourmet flare. To start we order two appetizers the acevichado de Tuna and the Murasaki roll. The acevichado de tuna was sliced high grade ahi tuna, sliced avocado and drenched in a Creamy Ají Amarillo Sauce, very fresh and flavorful. The Muraski roll consisted of breaded shrimp, avocados, and cream cheese topped with slices of octopus and olive sauce. This was a spectacular roll with plump shrimps and the tasty olive sauce. For the main entree we ordered the Seafood rice and their sliced steak with shrimp sitting on top of cilantro risottos.Both dishes were exceptional but the steak was perfection tender and well seasoned. The pisco sour here is also a must especially the coconut one. For dessert we ordered a flan which very creamy and solid. While in Miami, we visited Francesco for a nice dinner. The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere with chic booths and a beautiful bar. They offer elegant Peruvian fare. We were seated quickly, and our server was very friendly. We started with the Huancaina Tradicional, potatoes in a Aji Amarillo sauce. They were perfectly prepared. We also ordered a ceviche that was one of their specials. It had a nice mix of fresh seafood presented beautifully in an open shell. For our main course we shared the Lobster Ink Risotto, which had a delicious grilled lobster tail over a bed of creamy squid ink risotto dressed with Aji Amarillo sauce. They have a great bar area where you can have cocktails (check out the happy hour) and people watch. The staff are amazing. For appetizer a brushchetta salmon with cream cheese & huancaina potatoes with corn also had the shrimp chaufa with fried rice and a delicious Faroe island salmon on top of soft hot vegetables with side glace (images provided) for main finishing off with a lucuma cheesecake dusted on side + a chocolate nougat (turron) with vanilla ice cream on top. I remember Francesco in a different location. Came back to Coral gables to renew my Peruvian passport and I look for Peruvian restaurant around. To my surprise there was Francesco close to us ... It was as I remember... Amazing ! Alex , our bartender/waitress because we seated at the bar made a perfect pisco sour..,, as should be ... traditional and great. The food, awesome! and maybe even better than I remember was lunch time and I asked for the trio of tiraditos .... Unbelievable fresh, 3 different sauces, all of them delicious! My American husband asked for the only plate he adventure to try. " lomo saltado". I tried and was really amazed about the French fries ,,, Peruvian purple/yellow potatoes perfectly cooked, crispy but not oily ... the meat super tender with that smoky flavor that brought me to my childhood, my country ..... just as it would be ... perfect Peruvian taste ! Francesco somewhat recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Ortanique, in the same building as the Miracle Theater. This place definitely has an interesting decor and feel vs. many restaurants in the Gables. With the exposed ceiling, soft white walls and ceiling, long rounded mirrors on the walls and round globe lights that aren't dimmed as low as they maybe should be for dinner service, Francesco feels almost like a restaurant in one of the older, simple-looking Art Deco hotels on South Beach. Definitely different for this area. On both our visits to this restaurant, service has been outstanding and very attentive. The cocktails are also great, with some creative offerings. The food, in my opinion, is where they fall a bit short, especially when one considers flavor and portion sizes vs. pricepoint, and when comparing those to the other Peruvian restaurants in the immediate area. Everything we had was good and the presentations well done, but in our opinions the dishes we had at Francesco lacked a bit of flavor and were smaller vs. other eateries offering similar cuisine, yet the menu prices here aren't reflective of that. Will we be back? I'm sure of it. Will we include Francesco in our rotation of restaurants we'd patronize regularly? Not terribly likely. There are at least 3 other Peruvian restaurants in the Coral Gables area, and the kitchens at the other places in town offering similar dishes just do it better IMO. The bright spots here, at least for us, were really the cocktails and the service. read more

My husband and I have been meaning to try this place and finally got around to it for New Year's Day. What a wonderful way to start the new year. We started with the "Parilla de Mariscos"- usually comes with octopus but we were able to substitute for scallops ( wow!!!). The pairing of the avocado, tomato and potato was delish . The sauces and flavors were exquisite. Highly recommend you ask for it as your appetizer. I had the Lomo Salteado ( traditional dish) they have their own take on it with mushroom steak sauce and and a rice and bean side. Hubby had the short rib with the flavorful meat falling off the bone. It came served with beans and rice. Delicious! We tried their pisco sours ( traditional and passion fruit). Finished our meal with Tocinillo del cielo ( a cheese-like flan) also fabulous, Our server was Eric who was charming, informed us about the restaurant and made all these incredible recommendations. All I can say is what a huge disappointment. My best friend and I have been planning our first Miami spice of the year for quite some time and we had soooooo many options. I never imagined that our choice would leave us feeling so unimpressed, bamboozled and STARVED. Let's start off with the fact that we have to ASK for the Miami Spice because they will not offer it if you don't request it. I asked and it was presented. Next, the options. As appetizers we chose the Causa of Crab and the Scallop Tiradito with Francesco Sauce or should I say Francesco Sauce with paper thin slices Scallop Tiradito which were perfectly camouflaged in their special sauce. We almost mistook the bigger pieces of Choclo for the actual scallops thinking oh how cute mini scallops! But no, digging in a little deeper we discovered 4 micro slices of scallops. The sauce was great but excessive. Maybe it was a game of find the scallop? For the main course we had Crab Ravioli and Catch of the Day in "Walnut Sauce" that tasted more like a McCormick powder mix makeshift gravy. The catch of the day was Mahi Mahi which was drier than the Sahara Sahara. Not only was the mahi-mahi overcooked, but it was bland and tasteless. Although I hate to do this, I sent it back. They were very apologetic and promised to make it up to me which they did with a better less overcooked mahi-mahi but sadly still tasteless. The icing on the cake was the dessert. I was so looking forward to the lucuma cheesecake! I could not believe what they served us. Not only was it itty-bitty, but it tasted more like caramel than this delicious beloved Peruvian delicacy: Lucuma. We did not eat them, and our server was more than gracious, and I can honestly say that she was embarrassed. She insisted on bringing out a lucuma moose, which was delicious albeit tiny. But my question is why would they serve us a mediocre subpar miniature meal as an enticement to their restauran? The manager came over apologetically and swore that Marc Anthony was a regular at their establishment. My friend asked what Mark Anthony ate when he came and he was unable to give us a straight answer. All in all I feel that I have not only wasted my money and my time, but also one of the few moments I get to spend with my best friend which I cherish. The only reason I did not give this establishment one star was because of our server. She was gracious apologetic, friendly, and a fantastic host. Also the wine. Lackluster food : the duck ~$40 "large portion size" turned out to be the smallest 4 pepperoni sized slices of duck on a mountain of risotto, with nothing special or interesting about it. The ceviche here was the star. This was the best ceviche we have had anywhere. Food is a bit of fusion between Peruvian and Italian.

I love the new location. The establishment is gorgeous. Great place to have a drink because they have a gorgeous bar when you come in. The food was as good I remembered. During this visit we had ceviche, lomo saltado and the Oreo cheesecake. Everything was delicious but I must say I was surprisingly surprised that the cheesecake was outstanding. Very good customer service. About the food, we ordered: The rocoto relleno, the potatoes were not well cooked, the sauce was good, but the cheese wasn't that great. The causa with fish, the fish came fried and it's the very fishy kind that leaves you an aftertaste, The ceviche clásico, was ok but we've had better at La Mar, the original Francesco, ceviche 105. Then for the drinks. Pisco sours were nice. I ordered the duck with green risotto, it wasn't that great, the risotto lacked flavor, the duck was ok, but this dish had the opportunity to be amazing arroz con pato the authentic way in a gourmet presentation. Just lacked the flavor. My son had lomo saltado with tacu tacu, unfortunately the tacu tacu had mushrooms, so he didn't like it but the rest he enjoyed it. My husband had the seco de carne and he liked it but he's had it better. My mom had the carapulcra and the same it was ok but not wow. Her husband had the caneloni with ají de gallina and he really enjoyed that. I think that maybe the best dish. Overall, it was nice but not worth the long drive for the quality of food.
