Not only did I get a much needed shampoo and haircut for cheap ($30), all the proceeds went to AIDS Services of Austin. The studio is clean, cool with a nice modern vibe. During the celebration, they had a nice spread of food and drinks. I had a very positive experience today. The staff is very courteous. Francisco, himself, came to check on me a few times. He is very friendly and seems like he really cares about his customers. Jay, my stylist, was also very nice and took her time with my unruly locks. If you see a girl with great hair, that's probably me ;-) On Tuesdays, I think that they have a $99 cut and color special with a junior stylist. Going to a wedding today and needed a place to get my makeup and hair done. I was a little skeptical since I'm from out of town and had not been here before but gave it a shot. All I can say is Wow! I am very happy with the results. The Salon is vibrant and beautiful, Francisco is so talented and has a great personality, you can tell he has a solid base of long term clients because he is so great. My appointment was, without question, the worst experience I have ever had with any beauty-related service. I should preface this by saying that I have never left a review on Yelp before, so I am not a malicious person with any intent to purposefully hurt a business. However, this warrants a warning for any other potential customers. Francisco was very personable and fun and makes a great impression. We discussed that I wanted to keep my cut long and have manageable long layers so I could wear a ponytail. However, once the cut started I knew something was wrong. He cut my hair "dry," which was fine, but he (literally) began grabbing chunks of my hair and razor cutting huge layers. At some points it was even slightly uncomfortable. You may question why I never chose to say something during the cut to correct the issue, however, as a generous estimate he may have spent 5 minutes cutting my hair. So there wasn't much time. At no point did he do any of the following, 1. Ask me what I though of the length of cut. 2. Measure my hair or section off any sections. 3. Trim ANY of the ends of my hair (yes, the cut only involved cutting layers rather than trimming the ends). After the cut, my hair was washed. I will say the woman did a very good job and if I wasn't on the verge of tears I would have enjoyed it more. At this point though I decided to leave the appointment with wet hair. To make this post fair, I should note that he handled the situation politely and the cut may have improved had I stayed for the blow-out. Overall, this was a negative experience that left me crying in my car for about half an hour. I'm not a particularly picky person when it comes to my hair but I knew this was bad. I immediately made an appointment at another very reputable salon. The new hairdresser looked absolutely baffled at my hair. He told me that there were holes throughout the cut and had to take the length up significantly to try to improve it. That about sums it up. I wish I didn't have to leave this review, but it was truly as bad as I stated. read more

Win some and lose some. I lost Francisco. He's a great hairdresser and talent. I felt relieved that I had finally found someone in town who knew what he was doing. Problem though in service business you have to be nice. He was rude to me and that's why I can't give him 5 stars. If you have any complaints he will take it personally.I complained which is my right. Francisco basically said I needed to buy all his Redken products otherwise I could expect bad results. Well that's sort of not how it goes. Sounds like Monsanto selling grains to farmers and if you don't buy their grain then you get shut down. What happened is I had an appointment for hair color made by Andrew. I arrived to the salon and Francisco shooed me out literally saying I didn't have any appointment and to call and make another one. Stunned and unable to even tell him that Andrew had made that appointment two weeks earlier I left. Pamela phoned me in lieu of Francisco who wouldn't dare tell me himself, that I was no longer welcome to the hair salon and I should "find another Redken hairdresser online". So that's that. Francisco has been with me through my battle with cancer, losing all my hair and currently going through treatment again for a reoccurrence. This appointment he was insensitive and unapologetic from the start of this horrible cut but most importantly he didn't pay attention of what was requested. He did his own thing. If it were possible to give a 0 star rating I would. I went in to get color done to my hair based on the good review Francisco got in InStyle. Now i question how those reviews are determined. I had long blond hair half way down my back - now i have a mullet. Literally 3 inch layers down the back of my head and one long one at the bottom - but long i mean maybe 7 inches. Nowhere near what i had and certainly not what i asked for. He was very excited about giving me a makeover he could post and facebook to promote his new salon instead of listening to what i actually wanted. I got a mullet and cried for two days. I am attaching some pictures so you get the full effect. Here is an email i sent him the day after the horrific haircut he gave me and temporary color- pls note what i actually asked for (i never got a response): Hi Francisco. I want to start by telling you that I think you are a beautiful person with such a loving, kind heart - and FUN to boot. What I am about to tell you may come as a surprise to you as I did not have the courage to tell you last night as I was devastated. I came in with pictures of girls with long hair with a few curls in them which is how i like to wear my hair. I wasn't even signed up for a haircut, but as expressed I thought it would be great if you could trim my bangs. Mostly - i couldn't afford to do both. You mentioned putting a few layers in for texture - I agreed. That is not what you gave me. My hair was turning into this "rocker cut" as you call it and to me it looks like a mullet - especially from the back. And even half way through I asked you not to make it any shorter and you said okay - but right away you started shaving more off and now there is very little hair that is longish and the rest are very short layers. I understand I had some ends you wanted to take off - but this is absurd and not at all what I wanted. As far as the color goes - I mean i asked for one all over color and balayage highlights but you gave me a rinse that will wash out in a few months and a few foil highlights. I don't understand where the miscommunication was - If you go back and look at the pictures I gave you and compare them to the ones you took of me last night - I think the difference is shocking. So im out $300 bucks and miserable with my mullet. It will take me a good year to grow this out. I hope in the future you will take the time to listen to what your guests want and not allow a "makeover" for facebook to cloud your judgement. Best of luck in Austin. I just moved to Austin a month ago and stumbled across Francisco's Salon while on South Congress. Jai cut my hair and she did an awesome job. I will definitely go back to her for future haircuts. It's a nice salon and all the people that work there are extremely friendly, especially Francisco. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the Austin area. I loved Francisco!! So worth the $95 haircut. I have long, thick, curly, hard to cut hair and he NAILED IT! My hair is dark and he put very subtle color in it to give it that sunkissed summer look. He did a really great job. He is the kind of professional that you just trust. You could walk in and tell him to make you beautiful with no guidance and you know it will happen. I got a little carried away with his ever so smooth salesmanship when I bought some product I don't need. So just know that you'll have to put your game face on in that regard BUT he's that guys that you wwaaaaant to sell you something bc you knooow it will be good. Make sense? He's not pushy... he's literally just smooth. Salon is clean, hip, and comfortable! Had fun with the staff. Francisco is a hoot and Julio is very friendly. I can't say enough about the excellent color job Vanessa did on my lifeless dull hair. Not only did she choose a base color to complement my facial color tone, she mixes color variations like an artist for highlights and lowlights. Oh and did I mention how shiny my hair still is one week later!!! Still trying to figure how you add "shine" to color. Amazing! I feel compelled to say again how much I hate the haircut I got in JULY. My hair has HORRIBLE split ends from the razor cut and the choppy layers that I didn't want. It looks and feels like straw. I have always taken really good care of my hair, so I know for a fact that the split ends aren't from anything I've done. I cannot believe how crappy my hair looks 2 1/2 months later. I have tried literally everything to soften the straw on my head.....keratin treatments, different conditioners, even mayonnaise. I can't even flat iron my hair. What a mistake. read more

I am someone who chose to use Francisco's salon after it was named in In Style magazine as one of the best salons for coloring. I even traveled from San Antonio to Austin to do so --- BIG MISTAKE! After two appointments, my hair looks horrible. The best way to describe it is that it looks like the color job of a Calico Cat and worst of all, Francisco himself was the one who performed the service both times. With the exception of the top layer of my hair, all of my highlights are somewhere between a quarter of an inch to an inch out and so poorly done that there is no way I could wear my hair other than down with the top layer covering all the mistakes before corrective color is done by another salon. In addition, when I asked for my money to be refunded so I could get corrective color at another salon because I was not willing to give them a third shot at it, Francisco kept saying what a wonderful job he did, that is the style, stated he couldn't swear by his work because I did not buy the products recommended from his salon because I get salon products elsewhere, including the same brand, at wholesale and refused to reimburse me to go elsewhere. He also said that what he did in terms of color is the same Jennifer Lopez has. Well maybe if she used a colorist from when she was ...Jenny from the block???? I want to warn others not to use this salon unless you want to make a costly mistake ($290) and deal with a stylist who is so self-absorbed that you have to sit in his chair while he constantly says "do you know who I am" when telling stories about himself and criticizes others in the salon to try and drum up business for himself. Because of the poor service and attitude of the owner, I am going to make sure others don't have to experience the same thing I did in every avenue possible. Because the owner hung up on me while voicing my concerns and desire not to return to his salon for a third time and stating he would not consider refunding my money to go elsewhere. I am going to make sure I send out 290 blogs about my experience with him for every dollar I erroneously spent in his salon.
