End of summer lunch break (Labor Day)
    Anjanette S.

End of summer treat as we drove home from Lake Almanor. We took a small detour over to Frank's. I was craving a burger and feeling dressed well enough for The Highlands Restaurant across the street. They have a great "diner like menu." We sat down with our number and two cold beers. The Frank dog and bbq burger with a side of crispy chips forgoing a salad or fries. Lots of people were ordering ice cream cones & sundaes too. They close for the season Oct 19. Great outdoor tables with umbrellas. A restful stop that hit the spot.

Don't bother trying to call ahead to order, the phone just rings and rings. So frustrating

I think I enjoyed the food more last time. 2021 review: The lovely people here have completely biased my review We got to the lodge around 8:30 pm and after checking in, I asked what time the restaurant remained open till. One of the servers said, oh we close at 8 pm, then looked at the clock which showed 8:30 pm and then told me, "we can still seat you, no issues!" Who does that?! Only good people, that's who!! Couldn't thank them enough as we would've had to drive God knows how far to get food! They didn't rush us after seating either. For the dinner, we ordered the trout fillet, the steak with coleslaw, cottage cheese, chicken noodle soup and baked beans as sides and a glass of Chardonnay and IPA from the tap. The food was very good. Nice and homey and delicious. The sides were perfect accompaniments to the main courses. For breakfast the next morning, we ordered the Belgian waffle and the bacon and cheese omelet with country potatoes and a latte. This was also very good, well-made delicious and very filling. The latte was excellent! The prices are not cheap and you may have limited options of vegetarian. All in all, my experience with this family and establishment is a huge positive and I'll recommend it to anyone who comes this way!

She was helping others so we understood that part. Then a group of 6 people showed up just standing at the bar. When the Bartender asked which one of us were next I said us but the gal who I guess is a regular piped up and said they were. The Bartender new darn well we were there before them. So after waiting a half hour for 2 drinks neither of us liked we got seated outside. View was fantastic. Waitress got us our menus after sitting there a bit. She was nice enough. Food was ok. Not great not horrible. Never saw our waitress again until she brought us our bill. Then checked to see if we've paid 4 times in 10 minutes. 2 and a half hours total. Would only go back for the view.

As we needed a break from the monotony and The Oney Frosty in Town was open, we stopped in for some delicious soft serve. This is a down home friendly place where I'm sure that if you live within 20 miles, everyone knows your name. The free reading material on one table reflects the area ranch culture and we caught one conversation about someone that had just come home after a long time away. You can also buy a locally-appropriate coffee cup for your troubles as well. The chalkboard menu above the counter is heavily weighted towards their broad burger choices. The soft serve choices are on the far right, with the shake flavors on a separate board. Gayle ordered a "small" swirl cone, while I ordered a "small" cherry shake. Both were delicious and more than we thought we were ordering. We sat outside, enjoyed some light conversation, and too soon enough we were back on the road. We really hope that we'll pass this way again.
