I love Dr. Wong and his wife who is a hygenist there! They're both really friendly and are serious about their work. They always tell me what they're going to do with my teeth ahead of time and describes the tools they're going to use and what it would feel like for me. Mrs. Wong, I guess I should call her, kept making sure I was okay throughout the procrss and that she was being gentle enough. I went through a torturous 4 years of braces when I was younger, so I had no problems with any simple teeth cleanings! Anyway I love coming here and the receptionist called me before my first appointment to get all my insurance information down, so that when my appointment comes, I don't have to wait for her to call and other stuff they do. Each time I was in and out and if there was a question for my insurance, they would happilly call and answer any questions before I do anything else! My family and I started coming to Dr Wong's office several years ago; sorry that we did not know about his practice sooner! Dr. Wong is very competent, and believes in providing competent and painless cavity work while maintaining a good sense of humor. My 17 year old daughter recently had 3 cavities, and under Dr Wong's aegis had quick and painless fillings. She had really had a hard time at another pediatric practice where she had about six teeth pulled. I absolutely love Dr Wong's wife Wendy who is one of his hygienists who is the most gentle and through hygienist that I have experienced in 50 years! Dr. Wong is such a great dentist!!! His laugh sounds like Dr. Hibbert from the Simpsons! no joke. It's great. I randomly picked him as my dentist a few years ago since he was in my network for my insurance and his office is close to my house...and let me tell you, I am SO glad I did. He explains the procedure in words you can actually understand and never suggests any unnecessary treatment. I've recommended both my brother and my mother to him and they both love him as well. His prices are pretty reasonable even without insurance and I appreciate how they give me courtesy calls to pay my bills when they're about to become overdue. I would not recommend Dr Frank Wong for dental care! 1) He does not seem to care for patients, but collecting money, maybe business is not that good and he is desperate for money. 2) he is never on time, I have waited for my cleaning appt an average of 30-40 minutes 3) his staff is unfriendly and incompetent, they messed up my appt, when I went there on time they could not find my appt! And, they could not see me then, I had to book a new appt. So, they wasted my time & a trip to their office! 4) but, when I was 15 minutes late for my appt, they would not see me any more, and penalized me $60! 5) when I went for my newly booked appt, they made me wait again for 20 minutes before they told me Dr Wong would not see me unless I pay the $60! 6) I suggested that we called it even, since they made a mistake and I made a mistake. The receptionist gave me a horse face and a cold no! 7) it's totally not fair! They can waste my time any way they want, but not reversely, not even for my first time mistake. I used to go to Dr. Gerald Poppers, who I believe has sold his business to Frank Wong. I've always had good experiences with both dentists. Dr. Wong is a friendly person who is the only dentist I've ever had (and there have been many) who talks through what he's doing in your mouth as he does it, which takes a good amount of mystery out of dental work. He has never recommended work I didn't need, and when he has done work I've had a minimum of discomfort, and have not had a need to return for any fixes. His wife is a dental hygienest, also good natured and thoroughly professional at what she does. If you are in need of a good dentist, I definitely recommend Dr. Wong and staff. read more

One of the worst dental customer service experience ever. I called this office to ask if they accept my insurance first before I book an appointment. However, the office assistant rudely told me to call my insurance myself and check to see if their dental office is in the network. She said they were booked for the next two weeks and didn't want to book me for their next available time slot until I called my own insurance. If you're looking for a new dentist then look no further! My first appointment to Dr Wong was extremely a pleasant one! After hearing good things about him, I checked yelp to look at his ratings and was very pleasantly surprised and felt confident in calling in for an appointment. He is definitely a man of his craft. He genuinely cares about his patient's teeth and always gave me honest answers and never told me to get any unnecessary work done. He did my evaluation and referred me to an ortho take a look at my teeth to have one of my wisdom removed. If you've read any of the other reviews, his laugh is also pretty contagious... and DOES laugh almost like Dr. Hibbert from the Simpsons! :] Last week I made an appointment because part of my front tooth chipped and had to get it fixed and gave me his honest opinion that he shouldn't fix it, only because if it chips, then it will only chip again because of my wisdom teeth that are making the rest of my teeth slightly shift over and it would cost me at least a couple of hundred dollars and I would end up having to fix it again if he were to fix it. I've been to other dentists and they have always pressured me into getting things I didn't necessarily need nor did I know any better! Definitely recommend him! read more

I don't like going to the dentist. I have not been to one in about five years due to a lack of good insurance, a lack of money, and some very bad dental experiences. Luckily Dr. wong is phenomenal. I got full x-rays, a deep cleaning, and the whole kit and kaboodle and it did not hurt one bit. My teeth look all white and shiny and new, and I only had one cavity (not bad after 5 years of borderline tooth neglect. My mouth is in great shape and it didn't cost me a dime. I have been looking for a good dentist ever since I went on my insurance and had to drop a dentist that was not in network. I tried Clement St. Dental and they "found" ten cavities. I went for a second opinion and had none. Lately I have been using a dental clinic that I worked for but they could not book an appointment 6 months out. I have been Franks electrician at home and in the office for a few years. I had a cleaning coming up and I yelp'ed Frank. Glowing reviews....and I really liked the guy. I booked an appointment and I have to say it was one of the most pleasant experiences that I might have ever had in a dentist chair. His office runs smooth, my teeth were clean and I left smiling. Started going to this practice about 15 years ago after a Bad Dentist experience (my first ever, I don't really have a problem with going to the dentist) in the Financial District. One of the hygienists wasn't as gentle as I would have liked (a few years back), so I mentioned to the front desk as I was leaving and there has never been an issue since. The service is friendly, efficient and excellent. They take care of all the insurance hassle. It's the sort of "Mom & Pop" small business that really cares about the business and their customers. It's also fun to see the lobby photos of vacations and their kids growing up. Feels a bit like stepping back into a better time. They offer appointments on some Saturdays, though those book up well in advance. The location is great... they are on the main muni line through West Portal, so it is easy to get to. read more

I have been seeing Dr Wong and his staff for over a year. I found his practice on Yelp and liked the fact that it was near my home. He had very high ratings which I liked. WOW, did I strike gold. He and his wife and staff are very kind, caring, and well trained professionals. They are very gentle and explain everything. He does not find "things that must be corrected immediately" as my previous dentist did, which I really appreciate. Excellent experience. A very caring doctor in my opinion. I always have problems with dentists because I am very uncomfortable with tools inside my mouth. Dr. Wong will spend time to explain my conditions and provides me with good options which I did not get from my previous dentist. He will make sure that I am comfortable before doing anything inside my mouth and makes me feel that I am in good hands. He listens to my concerns and I don't feel that I am being rush out at all. It is a small office in a quiet neighborhood. There are plenty of parking space outside although you need to feed the meters. The bill is reasonable and the items are listed clearly. No hidden costs. Very helpful staffs and always welcome me with a smile. I will be seeing him again in six months. read more

I had been going to Dr. Wong for about 3 years. It was an OK experience. Small office on West Portal. A bit outdated but fine. I cracked a molar and went in for treatment. Dr. Wong repaired the crack and placed a crown on top of the tooth. I developed excruciating pain that week. I went back in and was told that it was normal for my teeth to shift. I was sent home. The pain continued and was unbearable. I went back in and was sent home again. I went back again after the pain continued and went through one of the worst experiences of my life. I spent an hour in a chair while he tried to remove a crown that was cemented on. It was terrible. I had brought my 2 school age children with me since I thought it would be quick. It wasn't. It took so long, the receptionist left and turned the lights out on my 2 children in the waiting room. How she could not notice 2 kids sitting 10 feet away from her, I don't know. When I finally was done. I found the 2 of them sitting in the dark, completely freaked out. Then, I had to go and get a root canal at another location. I returned to have a permanent crown replaced. I was so traumatized by my previous experience that I waited to go back until after the holidays. At that point, the permanent crown was replaced. NO ONE discussed payment with me. I assumed that since the previous crown had been unsuccessful that billing would reflect this. I was wrong. I received a bill in the mail for $1200, even though I have insurance. Around this time, THE SAME TOOTH began to hurt again. I was just going to call to have the tooth reevaluated when I received a call from the office lady saying that they wanted their money. I said the tooth still hurts and the first crown had been removed. She promptly called me back & said that "Dr. Wong feels this is not his fault and you have to pay anyway..." I was shocked. I had been going to this dentist for a few years and felt that my loyalty deserved better treatment than this. To date, I still have pain in this TOOTH. I will no doubt have to go back in (to another dentist) and have another crown removed. My credit was effected by this event. Dr. Wong did not care. He just wanted his money. I would never advise anyone to go to this dentist. read more

I went to Dr. Wong for a cleaning and x-rays, and learned I needed a root canal and crown. Before leaving after the first appointment, I received verbal quotes on the procedures. I asked that a written quote be sent to me, since they would have to call my insurance to double check what was covered. About a week later, I received a written quote in the mail. Since the prices on the written quote were upwards of 30% higher than the verbal quotes I received, and one price was whited-out and changed on the written quote, I called to double check the cost. They explained to me that they had mistakenly given me "default" prices for the procedures verbally, and that the written quote was now correct. I inquired about the whited-out written changes on the quote, they assured me that "this is what you will pay." I accepted treatment at his office in reliance on the written quote I received. I went back for the start of the root canal procedure, and left with a temporary crown, since they had to order the real crown. I called before the end of the calendar year to pay the balance for the procedure, which was advantageous to me for tax purposes. Having the written quote in front of me, they informed of the total, which was $260 more than the written quote. They said they had to add a post in my tooth (which had been already done mid-December), hence the extra charge. I was never informed of this extra charge, or that any procedure I underwent was not included in the treatment plan quote they provided. They also told me that "we should have charged you more money anyway" since they made further mistakes on the written quote. I stated I wouldn't pay the extra money, since it wasn't part of the quote, and I was never informed. They reduced the charge to $200, but I still refused to pay. They would not budge. With a temporary crown in my mouth, the post build-up procedure already done, and my real crown on order, I paid the full balance so I could have the procedure finished. Upon going back in mid-January to receive my full crown, I waited for Dr. Wong to address the up-charge and billing irregularities - 5 changes to the cost of the procedure by my count. He never said a word to me about it After leaving the office, I wrote a letter asking for a refund for the cost of the procedure not included in the written estimate. He refused, and canceled me as a patient. He also demanded more money from me to release my films and dental records. Any one of the billing mistakes, up charges, and billing inaccuracies taken singly would likely be understandable, but taken as a whole they establish a pattern of unethical and suspicious charges. After so many mistakes in billing, Dr. Wong has no credibility left when it comes to billing. His arrogance and aim to extract as much money as possible from me is verified by his final demand for more money in order to release my records and films- for which I have already paid him. He is obligated under the law to release my records for free or at a "nominal cost." I paid him in full for the x-rays and records merely a month earlier, so any "costs" involved in a rational to charge me for them (storage, maintenance, etc) is not applicable. The only reason he would demand money for them would be to extract more money from me. Furthermore, his philosophy seems to be, in his response letter to me terminating me as a patient, that any additional charges to my bill would be appropriate, due to the fact that he made other mistakes for which he really should have charged, and that he only does procedures patients need. The first rational is simply laughable, and reveals an inability to take responsibility for billing mistakes. It also calls into question his motivation for up-charging me without notification for the post and build-up. Was this just to recover lost revenue due to mistakes in the original written quote? Lastly, his rational that any procedure added above and beyond the written quote would be acceptable, is also laughable. If I had called to pay the bill, and learned that the total was not ~$2,000 on as the written quote, but instead $4,000 or $5,000- also without notification of any increase- would this be acceptable? Of course not. A written quote, and any price of anything, from a pack of gum to a new car, is the basis of commerce, and a safeguard abuse. Imagine any time buying anything from a pack of gum to a car, walking away from the store only to find the cashier running after you to demand 10% more money? Now imagine this after the price for that pack of gum or car had already changed and increased 5 times, and after which you had been assured "this is what you will pay." His arrogance around being able to charge, and change charges, for anything without notification, demand "credit" for billing mistakes- all is an unacceptable practice and a slippery slope. Dr. Wong takes time to thoroughly answer every question, he is very personable and best of all HONEST. He performed the comprehensive cleaning, explaining everything he was doing. How can such a nice guy and competent dentist have trouble dealing with insurance companies? After repeatedly billing my health insurance (BCBS) instead of my dental insurance (GEHA) and consequently having to wait months for payments, Dr. Wong and his front office person decided having the money sooner was more important than their client. While waiting for the wrong insurer to pay, and knowing they would eventually get payment from both insurers, they continued to send me bills and threatened to turn me over to a collection agency, even as they were receiving reimbursement. This happened after years as their client, and reportedly others with the same insurer faced the same treatment. Blaming the client for the dental office's issue with late payments does not seem like a good business practice to me. read more

They're highly competent, efficient and friendly. Dr. Wong has a nice way of keeping me in the loop about what's he's doing as he works so I know what's happening at all times. I used to live in daly city and so this place was close. But later as I moved 20+ miles away, I still keep coming back. They are just so nice and they never suggest you to do additional treatments that you don't really need (unless some other practice in SF). Strongly Recommend!! =D I also switched insurance companies three times and they seem to take essentially everything!! how convenient! The first time I made an appointment, I had a painful gum problem that bothered me, many places that I called couldn't accommodate me until at least after 2 weeks, but this place was able to schedule an appt for me within a week. =D This place is busy with a lot of patients but it is certainly accommodating.
