Dr. Nichols had been excellent, Very pleasant to talk to for many years! But this time I bad experience: the front receptionist (a Chinese woman) was not a pleasant person. She told me: "If you don't like what is happening here, you can leave and go somewhere else." All because she didn't like what I said (to another person making the appointment) that I would pay (repeated over five times) for the new patient I referred to Dr Nichols. I responded to the challenge: "OK! I never you again! Let me say goodbye to Dr Nichols." She went in to see Nichols, and I waited at the front. She then told me Dr Nichols had two patients waiting. I sat outside in the hallway and waited for about 15 minutes. Then I left. I sent a message to Dr Nichols about what happened above, saying it was not the non-owner's business to tell me to leave. As I was leaving, she slammed the front door and shouted "Goodbye." Because of this, I would never see this person ever again! read more

Have you ever heard someone say they love their dentist?!? No? Well, here is the first. Dr. Nichols is very attentive and really cares about your needs. I have a massive amounts of anxiety due to previous horrible experiences and he talked me throughout the entire thing. Sister recommended Dr, Nichols to me when I told her I needed a tooth to be extracted. Meet him . friendly, relatable man, who took care of my extraction and advised deep cleaning plan going forward. Well COVID 19 came along. When he was set to reopen my money got funny and I had to cancel those appointments. Was biting down on some fried chicken when my front tooth cracked and spit into two pieces could feel it way up into my gums. Could not put any pressure at all on it. Called his office ASAP . I went in as new patient but the next available appointment for teeth cleaning was not until October and needed a wisdom extraction, so found another dentist. As of now, all of my work has been done. There was nothing but x-rays taken when I visited Dr. Nichols and now I have a estimate from my dental insurance to pay 10% of a root canal? No work was done, absolutely nothing was done except x-rays... beware, of what your getting yourself into when visiting this facility. Been coming here ever since I moved to SF & wouldn't think of changing..... Teeth cleaning is extremely thorough & I never walk away feeling like they missed something.....or w/ a bloody mess of a mouth. BIG SHOUT OUT TO JOE....NO ONE touches these pearly whites but Joe - no one!!! It takes a special hand to be harsh enough to really clean, clean, clean, but gentle enough to ensure I can eat dinner w/out excruciating pain (and we've all had those experiences!) Joe - YOU ROCK!! Plus, he sings Show Tunes to me while he's cleaning & not everyone will do that, you know. So far, we've enjoyed Jersey Boys, Avenue Q & Rent. Based on yelps for this business, I decided to try it and glad I did!. My insurance carrier was out of network but finding a dentist whom you feel comfortable is more important. I was greeted by Dr. Nichols with care and patience. Asking me what I'm afraid of, etc and really LISTENING to any of my concerns. Lastly, I don't know the lady's name whom ended up cleaning my teeth but she came out of UCSF and it showed! She took a whole hour just to clean my teeth. I know that sounds bad but really my teeth are in excellent shape. She asked me if I had any sensitive areas before she began and I mentioned where it was and when it was time for her to clean around that area, she noticed I was getting uncomfortable. Like magic, she got a q-tip, added a little "numbness juice" to that area, and proceeded. She got to do what she needed to do and I didn't feel a thing :)....lovely. This office has it down. Last but not least, after my insurance paid the bill, my responsiblity was $16. I can't be that. I found a dentist that I feel comfortable with and I wasn't ripped off by this office visit as compared to my prior dentist which is why I left. Great value and great service. read more

A cozy dental office with the cleanest equipment and nicest staff. I took advantage of the promotion they had for teeth cleaning. Being relatives with a dental surgeon assistant, when I noticed the price I though this was nuts. $89 for x-rays and teeth cleaning? Well, yes, and not a bad one. Quite the greatest one ever yet. I arrived a bit late and they still took my x-rays (a total of 18, not the regular 6 set) which didn't hurt a bit. Sometimes the little things they stick in your mouth can hurt but the dental assistant was fast and bent them for comfort. Dr. Nichols himself said hi and then I was re-directed to the hygenist. She took her time cleaning my teeth. It's an odd feeling to have someone else floss your teeth. No cavities and I got a referral to get my wisdom teeth yanked out. If you don't have dental insurance, are new to the city, and don't know where to go, want (but can't) afford the expensive prices of a dentist, go here! They did a great job with me, I'm sure they will with you too. It's kind of hidden but I highly recommend it. They will forward my x-rays to the other place to get my wisdom teeth yanked out. I'm unemployed and this was the best offer yet. Don't let your teeth rot and then end up paying more than you want to fix the damage. I was referred to Dr. Nichols by my husband. As a person who has previously worked in dental offices I can attest that he and his back office staff are very knowledgeable and professional. Dr. N gives a thorough examination explaining every detail behind your exam and your x rays. I had a problem tooth which he could have easily charged me for a filling. Instead he recommended a simpler remedy of sensodyne toothpaste and gentle cleaning for the problem tooth. He is very kind and very thorough. Through out my years working in dentistry or my expensive visits to a reputable Marin doctor, I was not provided the wealth of information that Dr. N has given me. Another positive experience was from the hygenist was nothing short of professional and informative as well. She had explained why I was experiencing my dental issues and how I can remedy the constant dental problems that plagued me. My former hygenists would just huffed and puffed at my semi-annual cleanings while they exasperatingly cleaned away. I am a coffee and tea drinker, so I tend to subject my pearlies to horrendous stains. Thanks to Dr. N's care and staff I now have to tools and information (which they have provided) to take care of my oral health for the time being as well as years to come. He gives me great advice on dental procedures and keeps cost in mind. Dr. Nichols erases all the stereotypes about dishonest, greedy, sadistic dentists. I recently moved to SF from out of state so I don't have new dental coverage yet, and was horrified to learn that my lost filling was actually caused by major decay and I borderline need a crown. Dr. Nichols was very up front about the costs, options, and possible outcomes I could expect, and never once pushed me to get the crown instead of a filling. He was blunt (in a good way) about telling me that this filling might only last a year or two, but was super understanding about my lack of insurance and agreed that the filling is the best option for me right now. I'm a pretty anxious patient when it comes to the drill, and Dr. Nichols was great about this part, too. He made sure that I was 100% numb before drilling, and asked me how I was doing throughout the procedure. Despite my anxiety, the experience was definitely the best I could have hoped for. He was thorough, gentle, and eased my nerves from start to finish. Definitely see Dr. Nichols if you want a dentist who actually cares about his patients!! read more

Dr. Nichols has been my dentist for at least 15 years, possibly more. He is not allowed to retire because no one else is as good with patients as he is. My mom and sister and lately me, too, have very low pain thresholds in the mouth, and he is so sensitive to that. If it hurts, he does everything he can to make sure you're not feeling what he's doing in there. Over the years, he consistently has the best staff, and they are always friendly and remember me and my family. The parking there sucks, but that's the case with the Sunset. You accept it, and budget a little extra time and don't forget to bring quarters for the parking meters. The very worst part about each experience is knowing there's an awesome burrito place less than a block away, and you can't have any because you're either about to go in for a cleaning or just had one. Would not recommend. Saw an ad and thought it was cheap until I was told I needed unnecessary stuff done. Also scheduled me and learned that Dr. Nichols was out of the office that day and was told to reschedule. Waste of my time! Once I saw Dr. Nichols another day, I was told I needed many things done such as pulling out many teeth, needing a bridge snd some other dental works. Money taker! I am not going anywhere else! It's really hard to find a good dentist in this city. I went to him based off yelp reviews, and haven't looked back since! I have Delta Dental, and the staff is really friendly and nice in looking up pre-determined prices to see what the insurance will pay and what I would have to pay. My insurance covered the cleaning and xrays. Dr. Nichols is very friendly and nice! For my first appointment he listened patiently and went over everything very thoroughly with me. He is a genuine dentist and his staff are the best! I've already been twice and even though my insurance is going up and I have the option of taking free DMO CRAPPY plan, I'm not going to, it's not worth it! Dr. Nichols is the best! read more

I had the pleasure of being Dr. Nichols patient for a couple of years. The man is a wonderful, gentle, professional dentist. His work is impeccable and it lasts. He practices within a walking distance from my home. Why did I quit going to him? The woman who runs his front office. She scheduled the 2nd appointment for a crown without checking with the lab, the crown was not there! I live close but one must take time off of work to go to the dentist. She would quote one price and charge more. She took gate-keeping to the extreme, would not leave a message for the doctor when my mouth was bleeding after a procedure.
