Then the menu on caviar is so limited that the guy on the phone actually suggested that I order a bagel with cream cheese and write in the instructions that I really wanted a side of coleslaw because they're the same price. SO, $4.00 for a 1/4lb of coleslaw = $16/lb??? Are you effen kidding? With a straight face you say this? Once again GTFU and seriously get over yourselves Frankels. The clincher really was the $3.00 for a 12 oz. can of Dr. Brown's soda which costs $3.29 for a SIX PACK and $1.29 for the 2 liter in any supermarket. I ordered the kippered salmon as they were out of lox sandwiches. it was the saltiest thing i have eaten in my entire life. i threw most of it out. I have had kippered salmon before at russ and Daughters and it was perfect, i expected this to be the same.. What a disappointment. it made me sick! i don't know how their salt their fish, but they need to learn how to do it as their customers don't feel ill. I am afraid to try the lox as its probably as salty. It is also highly crazy waiting in line. I live in the neighborhood and had been watching this place setup for weeks. Food took forever to prepare. I ordered lox AND cream cheese on a plain bagel (the selection is sparse) and got lox-cream cheese on a bagel because the kid behind the counter was more interested in seeming cool than he was in taking orders. The bagel came and it was burnt! First off, this is NYC, if you order a bagel it shouldn't come toasted unless you ask for it to be toasted especially if you're paying $3 for JUST a plain bagel. It became clear that the bagels were not fresh so they had to be toasted. Place is down the block from me, so I'll probably give it another try, but I wouldn't travel for this and most definitely will not be a regular at this point. I'm very disappointed. read more

I like this place. Its pretty damn good, but I do have a few gripes. The good: - Matzah ball soup is some of the best I've had. Better then 2nd ave and Katzs. - The latkes are near perfect. Really great. - Whitefish salad was very good, pretty certain they mix it themselves. The thing is if they are going to be an "appetizing" store and not just a deli, then they need to adjust how they prepare their fish. First off, if I order a lb of nova at $40/lb, it should be hand sliced at the time of ordering. Not assembled from pre-cut portions. When you do that the fish oil oozes out and of the fish and pools. Second, you need to train your people how to cut the fish. It wasn't a hack job, but the slices were way too thick. Zabars & Russ and Daughters would have gotten 2-3 slices per a frankel slice. All that said, people complaining about the price are mis-categorizing this place. Prices are comparable to 2nd Ave Deli/R&D/Shelsky's. read more

I am dreaming of the pastrami sandwich i had yesterday from here. I ordered it "my way" with mayonaise and lettuce and sauerkraut on rye. It was perfectly proportioned, enough of everything. i know you are not supposed to have mayo with your pastrami. But they pleased me with it. I ate the whole dang thing in like 10 minutes because it was so good. i imagined i would only eat half. Only complaint is i wish it was 15 not 18 for what i ordered. Took my SoCal husband here during a trip home to NY recently. After the first bite, he said "I get it now." (I always complain about the bagels when I'm anywhere but NY..) Fantastic place for authentic Jewish deli food. The design of the shop is awesome, too. A real throw back to the 1950's. Make sure to get "Anita's Brisket," which is made using the recipe of the founders grandmother. Matzoh ball soup is also delicious. read more

It's true, these guys are still working out the kinks. A little more professionalism - not to mention a more ergonomically sensible production line - would go a long way. But the quality of their fish is EXCEPTIONAL (from Acme I hear?), and that's hard to find in your local bagel place. So yeah, you may have to wait a little while until they can fill orders as quickly as Bagelsmith. But you can't get fish like this at Bagelsmith, or at just about any other place in this borough. Wow. Just what Greenpoint needed. Frankel's manages to ooze coolness, while remaining unpretentious and serving awesome food. Tuesday morning at 9, the line looked long, but moved quickly. My first trip I kept it simple- lox and capers, regular cream cheese on an everything bagel, cup of coffee. Who thought something so simple, could be so different and amazing?? Fresh bagel, and super flavorful lox. Just a delicious breakfast. Don't skip on the coffee either. Self serve always makes me nervous, but sitting there I witnessed 3 fresh pots brought out over a 30 minute period. Great, flavorful cup. Managed to grab a seat by the window and watched the people walk by, and they all seemed to come into Frankel's. There's a lot of buzz about this place, and it's all well deserved. The ambiance is great- similar to the places that all the press they've been getting have acknowledged. Can't wait to come back soon to try some of the stuff the pictures make me salivate over. read more

It tries to be something it will never be.... a neighborhood spot with character. Go to Bakers Dozen better bagels and you don't have to wait forever. read more

It's really a shame that Frankel's is walking distance from me. It's way too easy to come here multiple times a week for your bagel fix. The staff is friendly, the wait is never too long, and the lox are really something to die for. My current favorite is the No. Three special bagel sandwich. I love the use of whitefish as a substitute for cream cheese. (Maybe it adds less fat and more protein so that my trainer might be more forgiving?) The decor is also super cute and picturesque in an old school meets new school kind of way. I'm looking forward to bringing friends and family over here for a breakfast meet up. read more

The Whitefish Club is outstanding and the Brisket Sandwich and the Pastrami Egg and Cheese are the greatest hangover busters of all time. Oh and the "#1" (pastrami cured salmon?!) is killer. Was sooo waiting for this place to open. Got out before 10, stood on line for half an hour, ordered king salmon on a non toasted bagel, salmon was great, the tomatoes were extra pretty considering it is winter, I sat down to eat it and for the life of me, considering how busy this place was yesterday and today, I can't figure out why was the bagel a day old, or so it seemed?! They would have run out of everything yesterday so no reason on earth for the bagels to not be fresh two hours after they opened today but it was hard like a day old bagel. On top of waiting 25 minutes on line (it was only partially out the door) we waited another 25 minutes for a pastrami sandwich and a teeny tiny little matzo ball soup, which was very underwhelming, may I add. I don't won't to compare Frankel's to any of the other deli spots, but if you're going to charge almost $17 for a pastrami Reuben, it better look like the Reuben at Katz's. Sad to say, it didn't even come close. My husband and I shared the sandwich (we do that at Katz's and we're so full) but we were still hungry. We hoped the matzo ball soup would make up for that hunger (and hoping at $7 it would be a hefty amount) but we were VERY disappointed. Great addition to the neighborhood, the Pastrami might be a contender for best in the city. The brisket sandwich is no joke either. The coffee, bagels, lox, cream cheese etc.... all delicious, but you can find that stuff elsewhere in Greenpoint and pay substantially less for it. I have noticed this place and never went in because of the long lines. Had a couple girlfriends come in from Nashville and Cleveland craving a bagel. We had to take the G train and I remembered this bagel spot so we checked it out. I had a onion bagel with cream cheese, one friend had the Number One, and the other friend had The Frankel's Classic with salmon. I tried each and it was delicious.
