The lobby area is very nice and also has a nice breakfast set up. The room was very roomy, clean, warm and comfortable. There is a sitting area, desk, closet and plenty of storage. The bed was especially nice. I loved the shower with the large rain head, very relaxing. The TV has plenty of channels and is set up for easy watching. I got a great price on the Aspen and was very happy with my stay. It looks like there are plenty of extras during the summer and I would definitely recommend a stay here.

The building shows the character of a building from the 1770's so know that the floors are uneven and stair treads are narrower than today's standards. I like that about the place. The Innkeepers are experienced, knowledgeable and as helpful as you want them to be. Michael made us feel welcome and his help and suggestions greatly enhanced our stay. The decor is country inn quirky and comfortable. This is a place to put your feet up, read or do a puzzle in the great room, sit in the meadow and watch the river run by, or if it's pouring rain, lay in bed and listen to the rain. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast each morning, complete with homemade muffins and granola. I appreciated that Michael was more than willing to adapt what he served to accommodate our food preferences and needs. I'm looking forward to my next visit to the Ira Allen House.

We have returned about 10 times since then as the ambiance and atmosphere of both the Inn and the West Townshend VT area have 'called' to us. We have loved the historic feel of the farm, the amazing food and generous and down-home hospitality. One of the greatest charms has been the individual and very unique feel and character of each room - no two are even closely alike. The original farm house which housed the kitchen, bar, living room, and dining area also had some 12-14 guest rooms. There is a second building on the property, a 140 year old dairy barn that has been converted to an additional 8 guest rooms. It also has a shared large living room / lounge with fireplace and full kitchen in the lowest level. With wide wood plank floors, four poster beds, fireplaces and soaking tubs, these rooms range from intimate and 'cozy' to spacious and airy. The original farm-house building was struck by lightning in the spring of 2021 resulting in a serious fire that did significant damage. This main building remains closed and repairs are still being planned. The entire property closed for a while and finally reopened, but in a somewhat limited capacity. Only the rooms in the barn are currently available and they are open in a self-serve type manner. You can reserve your room online and then receive a door access code to your room on the day of your arrival. You can check yourself into the room using the door code, though during our recent visit in May/June 2024 the friendly and welcoming caretaker Jason was present to welcome us. The barn building and rooms, as well as the pool and local grounds are all being well cared for and are in very good condition. There is no on-site food service available which is still a little disappointing. The 4 star cuisine (included in the original room prices) was one of the great appeals of the Inn prior to the fire. Room rates are now much lower which should make this an even more appealing (read affordable) destination. You should consider bringing your own supply of snacks to tide you over between meals. There is a small mini-refrigerator in each room to keep bottles, cans and perishables fresh. There was no ice in the room yet Jason offered to get some for us if needed. There is a Keurig coffee machine in the common area which was stocked with some tea and bold coffee along with creamer / half and half. We took a couple small coolers with us, one in which to put a small bag of ice purchased at a local convenience store and the other to hold our crackers, cheese, nuts, and other snacks. Beds are large (Queen or King) with memory foam toppers - tending toward being a bit soft. There is a large TV in the room with many options and there is robust WiFi inside the building. There is no daily room / cleaning service currently. West Townshend is a very rural area with few dining options. If you are here on a Friday from mid-may to October (4:30--7:00 PM) you should consider visiting the West Townshend Country Store at the bottom of the hill. They have an outdoor pizza oven with picnic tables. People come from all over for a pizza with locally sourced toppings, to sip some beer or wine, listen to live music and shop the pop-up farm stands for locally made crafts and food items. If looking for a variety of dining options, you need to travel 25+ minutes back toward Brattleboro or out toward Stratton Mountain and Manchester. While the 150+ acres of the property do offer some hiking trails, there are also many other local places, a short drive away, to explore the outdoors. Our favorite go-to is Jamaica State Park and a 5.5 mile (total out and back) easy-to-moderate hike up to Hamilton Falls. If covered bridges are your thing - there are several within a short drive of the property. We truly love our visits to Windham Hill along with the beautiful sweeping vistas and very quiet and laid back ambiance. We look forward to returning here again, many more times. We hope the owners do consider renovating the original farm house and bringing back some of the additional appeal of the original operation.

Our room The Lincoln was spacious, clean and bright. Fresh baked chocolate chip cookies were there in the evening when our bed was turned down...what a treat! They accommodated my dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease) which I truly did appreciate. Breakfast was delicious and eggs made with fresh herbs from the garden and berries! Stacy is militant about cleanliness. And being personally part of the cleanup crew I can attest to the job we did after the wedding. However Stacy dug into the trash and found cigarette butts and charged the bride $150 PER BUTT to the tune of several thousand dollars. In the middle of the reception. The inappropriately dressed staff kept the brides mother from entering the main house to use the bathroom. She's 95. He found a leaf in the hot tub and charged her for cleaning the tub. Which, if you're a respectable establishment. You should be cleaning that anyways, between EVERY guest's stay. Several times in the lead up to the event Stacy threatened to cancel the event leading to multiple breakdowns - emotional, not automotive. He maintained a persistent presence in the house during the stay of the bridal party, which was annoying. The bride and groom have been in a protracted battle with Stacy to get their security deposit back. The bride just wants it to be over. The unfriendliness of the staff, the rules imposed, considering the exorbitant price paid - tens of thousands of dollars. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The estate is made up of several buildings. There is a large mansion with lots of bedrooms (I think I counted 8 at least, not including a little hidden alcove with a real-life hidden room behind a bookshelf!), most of them with private bathrooms, though not all of them including showers, and with a variety of sleeping arrangements. Some had large beds, some with bunk beds, all of them comfortable. We got a bunk bed room but the mattress was great and there were real feather pillows. This main building has a large dining space with a piano, two big fireplace sitting rooms, and a beautiful industrial size kitchen with all the things you need to cook for a crowd. The smaller buildings include a barn with several bedrooms, another smaller house with its own kitchen, and a large theater which also may have had a bedroom or two, but I didn't get a chance to look around there. All of the buildings were very well maintained, impeccably clean, and spacious for a crowd. I can see why people would have an intimate 40-person wedding or family reunion type gathering here. I did find the artwork in the main building to be interesting - lots of different styles and not all from the same period. I'm not an artist so it was more interesting to me than anything but if you're looking for something very cohesive or a certain style you might be a bit surprised. Also - lots of signage. Something about a thousand signs of Do's and Don'ts everywhere makes me worry that the ownership is overly anxious about the property, but maybe they've had big issues with boarders in the past, I don't know. We had a really fantastic breakfast prepared by the staff/curators; it was beyond opulent with fresh fruit, breakfast pastries and breads, ham and egg sandwiches, sausages, yogurt, and some sort of a breakfast pasta that really made me go HRMMM to look at but when my husband convinced me to give it a try I was humbled by how tasty it was. Tasted like... breakfast pasta. Ha! That evening, the staff made an amazing bonfire out on the grounds, complete with warm blankets, Ghirardelli s'mores, hot cocoa, and truffled popcorn. As we were wrapping up for the night out there, suddenly there was a fireworks show that even our event organizer for the weekend didn't know about. Very lovely and unexpected. My one BIG issue that I wish could be addressed was the navigation issues in getting there. For the most part, people had no problem driving there, but my husband and I used Google Maps and Apple Maps to navigate there on both our phones and not only is the cell service practically nonexistent up there in the mountains, both of those apps took us to what felt like the middle of nowhere on rural unpaved, streetlight-less roads. This happened to a couple other members of our party as well. It actually took us an extra hour of driving around anxiously in the dark trying to find the place and to several dead end and unplowed roads. The website itself doesn't give any clear directions to the estate, though it does give coordinates for flying your personal helicopter there... I don't have that option these days, though. :)

When we first put down our deposit, we were told we couldn't choose our room but could list our top two choices. Not ideal, not a huge deal, but not a great start. Then we told the owner my wife has a gluten allergy, and she said she could not accommodate it. I asked for a discount since my wife wouldn't be eating breakfast, and the owner said okay. The next day she abruptly changed her mind and said no discount, but she'd make my wife a fruit cup. This was disappointing, a reversal of an agreement, and a fruit cup is not comparable to a typical B&B breakfast. Correspondence from the owner was terse and not sympathetic. When we finally had to cancel (3 weeks in advance) due to the memorial service for a death in the family, we were promptly refunded out money, but minus a cancellation fee. I understand cancellation fees, but I would hope that when it is due to a death, there might be an exception. Again, terse communication as well.
